So...whats for dinner?

Carrie - I wouldn't call it "negative" but informative in a way that would cause you to exercise caution. One example in the book is a Phase 1 trial - where the intent is to establish the highest tolerable dose. Many people enter a Phase 1 trial thinking "curative" but what the clinicians are really trying to find out is how much can they give a person before the really serious side effects set in. That's not to say that it might not also be effective, it's just not the primary end goal. I need to finish it so I get the whole story. It's called "How We Do Harm...a Doctor Breaks Ranks About Being Sick in America"
-
Carberry.... You don't hear about my, "If we have friends or family over...Let's not serve this." Or see the scrunched up face..... I think about those and I get a smile that no one else understands.

Has anyone seen these dinners...that started in Paris. Boston just had one in the Seaport district....sounds like a fun event!
It was funny to see this article in the news today because last evening it was pretty cold on our porch but we ate there anyway....I grabbed my only warm clothes....a white sweatshit and white sweatpants....we laughed at how I looked....but I could have been okay for diner en blanc! Newfound variety! LOL

Apple - I used to parboil (in beer) ribs before grilling, but when I purchased a weber a GREAT many years ago, I stopped doing it. Now I cook them solely on the grill, very slowly, but when I'm done they ar fall off the bone tender.
Leek soup. I love it. But I don't like potato particularly, so I make leek, chicken, lemon grass and ginger soup. Very few carbs - loads of taste. For mine I add hot sauce when I eat it, my hubby does NOT like hot stuff so he gets it sans sauce.
-
I STEAM my ribs. First I Seasoning them with s&p, garlic, rib seasoning of your choice. I stand them up in a large pot with a little water on the bottom and cover with foil or lid. Steam for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until they are really tender. You can do this the night before or in the morning. Because basically they are cooked they just need to be heated. I make my own bq sauce and slather the sauce over ribs and grill, maybe about 20 minutes or so. I get lots of raves about these. Yumm! I want to make them now!
Lacey- My GF went to one of those Le Diners in San Francisco and really enjoyed it. Basically its a flash mob dinner. And you are responsible for your own good time. You bring your table, dinner ware and food and drink. I think it would be crazy fun thing to do!
-
Lacey - too bad, the one in Boston was on the 16th. I so would have done this! We'll have to keep this in mind for next year! Flash mob was exactly what I was thinking! LOL at white sweats!!!
Interesting discussion about different rib-cooking methods. I like mine to be tender but not falling off the bone...Kansas City bbq competitions judge ribs for tenderness but still a little "pull" which is interesting. In any case, rib are yummy food!
Good news about my tumor markers - stability. They were 91 in July and 89 last Friday. The Xeloda was providing some stability. And my HbA1c was 6.0, pretty good considering I've been eating mostly whatever I want these last few months including in Paris. "All thinks in moderation" is my new mantra! That includes dessert!
-
Yay Michelle, stability is good! Happy for you.
-
Michelle- Good to hear your results show improvement. You must be on the right track!! (((hugs))) I loved the pictures you had on FB about the Birthday Party. Your mom looks good too!
Just got done cleaning all the baseboards in my house. cleaned out the fridge and drawers, It was pretty much clean so did a lot of extra stuff.
Trying to stay busy, found out my dads esophagus cancer is in his stomach, lungs and pelvis. I guess we find out Wednesday what else the pet scan showed. Roberta my dads wife told me they were going to keep this all a secret until Wednesday but decided to tell me, so my brother and my sister don't know how extensive it is. I am devastated beyond words.:-((( She also told me my dad didnt want all his personal health issues on FB so I guess I will vent here if no one minds.
-
((((((Debbie))))))))
-
Debbie, my heart goes out to you, more than it ever has to any one in your position. We are sisters in more than the kitchen. My younger brother, and only sibling, was discharged from the hospital today--to home hospice care. I don't know if it will be days, weeks or months.
-
Chabba... I have no words for you or Debbie. Just love and hugs your way.
-
Chabba, Debbie, (((((hugs.)))))) Much love. Please remember to take care of yourselves too.
-
Chabba and Debbie- Huge hugs to you both. I am so sorry beyond words for what you and your families and loved ones are going through. Please always come here for support. Again there are no words to help, but I send you love prayers and strength.
Michelle- Stable is wonderful! Now time for the one two punch!!
-
(((Chabba))) (((Debbie))) I'm so sorry for both of you and your families. Debbie - this is a good place to vent so we're here for you and we don't mind one bit. Same for you, Chabba.
Love and hugs to both of you.
-
So for dinner I had parriesian carrots, roasted red potatos, and chicken breast in a dijon sauce. Now before you get too excited, its a frozen dinner, LOL.
-
Ahhhh, (((((Debbie))))) and ((((((Chabba)))))), I'm so sorry and sad that you going through such pain. Caring thoughts to you both, and glad that we can all be here for you.
Definitely step up the posts as you need to....
Michelle, I liked hearing that "stability" news! Honestly, I always forget about the diabetes, so am glad that is being managed via moderate pleasure! Yes, you need to enjoy yourself and I love how you do it.
Tonight we went to the Winnipesaukee Playhouse to see "The Turn of The Screw" in which the two actors were amazing! We stopped for dinner at the Town Docks in Meredith. I had lobster corn chowder (not great flavor) and a BLT (not sure why I keep having these BLT cravings!), which was tasty....nice crisp bacon....and ot came with french fries which I hardly ever eat, but wow were they good....every last one!!It was nice to sit on the docks and eat a casual dinner while watching other people's toddlers, guessing how old they were by their speech and motor development. Can you tell we miss the DGS?!
-
Thank you all.
-
Lacey - it is fun watching children in action. I love to "kid-watch" when I go to the beach. I'm probably not watching from the same perspective as yours, but it's fun nonetheless. Are you using Facetime to keep in touch with the DGS? As for your BLT craving, it is tomato season. And everything tastes better with bacon, right ?
Moonflwr - I have to chuckle...as soon as I saw your carrots, I wondered how they were made. Frozen entree...brilliant! Any thoughts about what might have made them parisienne? -
Yes, Facetime is great.....except that DS1 uses his iphone for it which must be weird for DGS to see us as such small characters on that tiny screen.
For some reason they are averse to getting an Ipad which would make it so much nicer in my opinion....and knowing how they are, if they don't want an Ipad it doesn't even make sense to get them one as a gift...so we won't be doing that. Will just have to keep trekking down there... I should be happy they are not in California! Counting my blessings on that one!
Hey, I may soon be ordering bacon from that place you get yours if this craving keeps up!
Looking forward to another nice walking and beach day tomorrow..... -
Thank-you everyone!
Chabba- I am so very sorry if you need to talk let me know!
Love and hugs to everyone!
-
Debbie and Chabba {{{{HUGS}}}} Vent here all you want, we are here for you.
Michelle Awesome on the stability!!! Now like Laurie said, lets kick its butt!
This is to confirm my non-culinary skills, but can always be viewed as your laugh for the day: I bought a large stone pot with a lid from pampered chef, and some one had told me that they are great for doing a whole chicken in the microwave....so I got a whole roaster....did not fit in the pot to get the lid on....so decided to put it in with some foil and bake in oven instead....so good so far...until we try to slice it for dinner and thre wasnt any breast meat.....hmmm...so my DH says all the meat is on the bottom huh? Yes....I put the thing in upside down...arrrgh some days I should just stay outta the kitchen.
The good thing is, there is leftover chicken, and I should be able to do a simple salad tonight with chicken.
-
Last night I made teriyaki broccoli, with jasmine rice. I'll probably do that again tonight, as I still have quite a bit of broccoli that needs to be eaten.
-
Chabba and Debbie - in the midst of the crisis of your loved ones, please don't forget to take care of yourselves. Huge hugs to both of you. My heart goes out to you.
-
Carrie... hilarious - I love kitchen stories like that. Sounds a bit like one of my Mum's friends - hated being in the kitchen so when her stove broke they said the part would take a week to get there so they could repair it.. she said could they make it 4 weeks so her and DH could go for take outs.
Pizza last night - DH & buddy putting in a new patio door.
-
Carrie - so, cooking that chicken upside down is not actually totally wrong. Just sayin...I have seen recipes touting the idea of roasting a turkey upside down to make the breast meat more moist. So I'll bet that chicken was pretty darn good!
We ended up having pizza last night, too. DH said "no more chicken!"
I spilled coffee all over my Toshiba ultralight laptop this morning...and all over myself. Yuck! It was pretty hot but I managed to not burn myself. My laptop, on the other hand, has taken its last hit (it's been dropped a couple times and endured a couple of other spills over its lifetime). So, I just ordered a new one from Amazon. I hope it gets here before we leave next week for Atlantic City. In the meantime, I have an older netbook that still works better than my fancy new iPad for blogging.
Lacey - your iPad will do video Skype...if they have a laptop with a webcam, you might be able to Skype a little better than Facetime. Link to yummy bacon website, breakfast sausage is really good, too. I usually order pepper-coated bacon:
I was supposed to meet the family for dinner tonight at the mexican restaurant, then take my grandson to the beach tomorrow. He was supposed to spend the night. But strep is in their house and he has a temp of 102, so that's out. DH said I could go with him to NJ but I decided to stay home and enjoy some peace and quiet...and be ready to go to Dana Farber if I get the call in the next couple of days.
-
To all - I would not combine the "dinner in white" with the ribs, just a thought...
chabba and debbie - having lost both father and brother to stage IV cancer I know exactly how you are both feeling, sending you hugs.
luv - yay on the stable TMs!
-
Hello all, still stuck with my drain, oh well. Michelle, the only thing that made them parriesian, I my opinion, (other than the dijon) was the cut, they were round like marbles! Pretty good though.
-
Very funny on the frozen dinner, Moonflwr! Your post gave me a chuckle, which is always worth a lot.
Michelle, that's wonderful news about the bloodwork. Interesting insight into medical trials.
Debbie and Chabba, I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I know what it's like to lose a father, but not a brother.
DH's sister has just been diagnosed with a rare disease called Amyloidosis. It's every bit as frightening as cancer. An amyloid is a type of destructive protein that attacks the body and causes great damage. The only treatments are chemo and stem cell transplant.
On a more cheerful note, I needed some ground beef for tonight's taco salad dinner minus the taco shell. Not having any ground beef, I thawed out a flank steak and cut it into tiny pieces. How's that for persistence? I have a couple of avocados that should be perfect for quacomole, probably misspelled.
Hugs to all.

LuvRVing...have to laugh at the laptop story...did the same thing, only with a glass of wine on a brand new laptopl. Oh my....
Paula Dean's Stuffed Mushrooms (with my changes of course, can't leave any recipe alone)
48 lrg. to med white mushrooms, wiped (not washed)
remove stems ( I put them into a breakfast omelette)
1 pkg. (10oz) frozen chopped spinach, thawed (I usually have fresh & steam it, cut up with scissors)
4 oz feta cheese, crumbled( I have also used blue cheese)
2 oz cream cheese, softened
1/c parmesan cheese
1/2 c. finely chopped green onions ( or whatever onion you have)
2 or 3 cloves of cushed garlic
Mix spinach, feta, cream cheese, green onions & bit of salt& pepper
Fill each mushroom, heaping teaspoon , sprinkle with parmesan
Place on cookie sheet & bake until filling is golden brown,
Oven 350' for about 20 min.
I place all mushrooms on sheet & then sprinkle with parmesan.
Delicious, always in demand & never have any left overs. Best served piping hot but be careful of those hot cheese centres.
I am a pretty slap dash cook, so not always exact with measurements, but always turns out. Enjoy
Had rad 11/25 today, slight pinking & fatigue setting in...but still cooking.

Hi Ladies,
Thought I'd share a kitchen story with all..
When my DH and I first were married I knew nothing about cooking. I mean nothing. So I decided how hard could it be?
So I bought a whole chicken, put it in a pot and cooked it. At the time we lived in a 2 family with elder land ladies (who cooked all the time.) Well the chicken didn't look so hot, so I brought it to my landlady and she took one look and laughed so hard she couldn't tell me what's wrong.. Then she asked me if I cleaned it out first..the look on my face told her no ! Well there came more laughter, after she caught her breath, she explained that I cooked it upside down and that I was supposed to take out the "stuff" from inside the chicken.
Well from then on I started to learn how to cook and I haven't stopped siince.
