Lacey, nah, just desperate. When you have an extremely pigheaded and skeptical child, you need to get inventive.

I just found an interresting article while searching about perfumes and breast cancer. Did you know that Susan G Komen has a perfume out called "Promise me"? Nancey brinker ,Susans sister i guess had promised her that she would find a cure for BC and thats why she named it that. But The Breast cancer advocey group sent in a sample of the ingredients to a chemical labratory and they found that it has galaxolide in it which is a benezene type chemical. It was suppose to be pulled from the shelves but stores still carry it. This is also in many other perfumes, including, nail polish, soaps, detergents and many other things. Just thought i would share this pretty scarey stuff!

Michelle, wishing you great results with your treatment.

Happy birthday to the birthday ladies!!

Dinner last night was a skillet dish with ground chuck, diced purple bell peppers, sliced cabbage and sprinkled seasonings that included garlic and onion powder, s & p, and a lot of cumin.  Can of Rotel tomatoes.  DH and I both liked it.  Salad was sliced tomatoes and cucumbers with a good balsamic vinegar and a bit of EVOO.

That's interesting and scary about the Promise Me.  I'm sure there are alot of articles on it -I just found this one http://www.dailyfinance.com/2011/10/04/could-perfume-to-benefit-breast-cancer-also-cause-breast-cancer/   I was thinking the Opium had pheromones, which made me curious, but I was wrong-I'm thinking of Realm which I also used to wear. They probably all stink (no pun intended) when it comes to chemical make up and spraying it on our skin.

I awoke to blue skies this morning...lovely!  Now I will go outside and check my new garden and my little pepper and cucumber plants to see how they fared through the last two days of rain...probably very well since it was a nice slow one.

Hope to play some golf later today if it dries out enough.  The ground is hard here so most rain runs right off.  I'm so glad that I spent yesterday cleaning the house and got that out of the way;)

I rarely do this, but I think dinner tonight will be a couple of little steaks that I had left in the freezer from last fall.  They look ok and if I remember, the ones that came from this same group were excellent, so we'll grill them with some veggies and a salad, then fruit and nuts for dessert later in the evening.  We never eat fruit either just before or after eating other foods unless it blended in a smoothie.

I made an excellent bean soup that was so simple....just two cans of cannelli beans with some onions, garlic, carrots, celery, kale and chicken broth....simmer on the stove until just tender, then blend in the vita mix until smooth.  Add a fresh basil sprig, and some sprinkles of goat cheese and enjoy!  It was excellent cold the next day.

    Have a great day everyone!

2friedeggs:  I used to have some Realm...you know they used to say it had something in it that attracted men..the pheromones I guess...anyway I bought some and wore it to one of my business meetings and low and behold, one of my bosses got into the elevator with me, smelled the perfume and became very amorous...yikes!  Believe me, he was never like this before!  Needless to say...I never wore it to any work related event again!  I loved the smell myself and now I think they've taken it off the market.

Koeman???  Part of the 'pinkwashing' band of corporations.

We ended up with pizza for dinner last night.  DH and neighbour were putting in underground irrigation in the back yard.

Kaara your soup sounds really interesting.  I may have to try that.

So watching the news and there is a beached baby humpback whale just outside of Vancouver in White Rock - not looking good at the moment as couple of hours before high tide.   DOF still not there.   Sad!!

So interesting on the perfume theory....I think all these chemicals in everything we use on a daily basis is a huge contributing factor in cancer all the way around.  Why do we need so many chemicals in things like soaps and detergents when we are trying to get clean?

Happy birthday to all of you June babies!

Michelle, Good luck with your appointments.  You will rock the xeloda, plus you have such an amazing supportive family.

Had grilled pork chops last evening, corn on the cob and baked potato..so simple but so good.

Maybe quesadailles tonight with the leftover chops.

All I can say about the perfume is that I never wore it because both my and my hubbies allergies would not permit it.  That said, shampoo, soap, detergent, house cleaners, etc....  all used - and probably all really really bad.  :(

Someone asked about a gene??  I've not been tested for any genes other than BRCA1 and 2.  Was this a different gene test?  The reason I ask is that incidence of BC in my family is insanely high, and I'd like to know about possible genetic markers so that I can give my daughter, niece and grand-daughter a heads-up.  Though I don't know if they'd be willing to do any more testing at this point - of course, unless I get it again (knock on wood)...

AND Happy Birthday to everyone!!!  :)

Kaara thats funny about the Realm. I don't remember it having any big effect for me but heck it sounds like it worked for you! Good idea not wearing it to business functions. lol

Gardenbumby My family history is insanely high as well and includes a few other types of cancer as well as bc. I also tested negative for brac although I was unable to get my insurance to pay for the 2nd part of the brac test called the bart test. Even though those affected by the part the bart covers is a very small percentage, my doctor says if you do happen to be one of the low percentage that it really increases family odds. He is hoping to be able to get me the other part when Myriads patent runs out and others are allowed to perform the tests. My onc is big time into "genetic" cancers as his family was affect as well.

Carberry, grilled pork chops and corn on cob sounds good. I love everything on the grill but now this dang bc has me thinking back on on the grilled food I used to eat.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVERYONE !  enjoy your days and make sure you get spoilt Kiss

I, like everyone else, wonder about my past lifestyle and bc and what if this and what if that... then I remember a saying (well a couple really) that helps me:

    1.  what IF my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle

    and

    2.  Dont look back you're not going that way

So we can all try and work out if we got bc cos of something we did in our past... but its a crapshoot really.  How can some people smoke until they are 100 and not get cancer and someone who has never smoked get it... for me I can only look and see how I can maybe improve my life and what I eat/use from today onwards.

Well that's my philosophical moment over for the day.

I for one am not into guilting myself over something I MIGHT have done or not done that contributed to my BC.  I get overly tired of the "blame the victim" mentality.  My mom, aunt and grandma all had it as well.  It's something that happens to some people.  Did I do something that contributed?  Maybe, maybe not.  Like you say, Tazzy, it's a crapshoot.

I'm also not going to live every minute of my future life thinking I can't do this or can't do that because it may contribute to getting cancer again.  Everyone is going to die of something, and I might as well just go ahead and take my ownself out if all I do is worry about the future possibility of more cancer.  Life is worth a lot more than that.

I'll not be crazy, I'll take my meds, I'll exercise - but I'll also eat tofu on occasion, have a drink, eat grilled foods, and continue to live in our highly toxic society.  :)

Back to the thread topic....  :)  For dinner tonight we're having steak (not grilled because it's supposed to be raining this evening), fried mushrooms, broiled asparagas, salad and black rice.

Well...my BF is allergic to tomatoes, but I'm having them anyway;)  I'll make him a nice green salad and he'll be happy!  The corn and tomatoes are so seasonal here that you have to enjoy them when you can, fresh out of the gardens of local farmers here in NC.  Nothing better.

Cannot beat local fresh produce.   About to go out to the local markets with my neighbour.   Fresh corn whether it be bi-colour, white cannot be beaten for taste.   Allergic to corn... that would suck !?

tazzy - yeah - too many allergies - him to corn, me to wheat, but the worst is that he's allergic to sugar.  That one truly sucks.  He cheats sometimes, but pays for it badly when he does.

Happy Birthday Lacey, Seaside and Debbie!!!  I hope you all have an amazing day and get at least one happy surprise!!

I agree about not trying to figure out where the cancer came from.  Personally I think it is genetic and environmental exposures.   I also remember when they used to say chocolate caused cancer, now they say they were wrong.  Last summer when the house was hit by lightning it kind of confirmed things for me.  There are women who get breast cancer who never drank or smoked, exercised every day and ate a vegetarian diet.  Life is short, we have no idea if we will be hit by the proverbial bus tomorrow or not.  SO I enjoy my wine, I will eat the steak if I want it etc.

Last night we had grilled chicken with some grilled bread and balsamic dressing, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese.  Kaara- What I wouldn't give for one of your tomatoes!!!  DH and the boys had pasta with theirs and I made myself a big old salad which was delish.  I have no idea what is for dinner tonight...I am going to have to rummage around and see what I can put together.  I do know that after all the wonderful eggplant talk I am going to be buying an eggplant when I go grocery shopping this week.

DS#1 is finally through the worst of everything and I am so happy for him.  He hasn't had to take medicine for two days as he has not been in pain and he has slept through the night again since Saturday.  This morning he even had a piece of very lightly toasted bread.  He was over the moon, I think he thought his throat would always hurt.  The funny thing is I thought being cooped up would be the hardest part for him but it wasn't.  He misses real food!  He told me this morning he can't wait until he can eat a cheeseburger again :)

Seaside- You have a wonderful voice, hehe! Thanks for the bd song. Have fun tonight out with your hubby!

Kaara- Thats funny on the realm perfume, i want some! lol! they actually do still sell it. Although the what ifs are true you still wonder. but its not gonna ruin my life. But i might just check out that perfume anyway, who knows might put  alittle spice back in my life. Tongue out

2friedeggs- Yes thats the same test, although my dads side of the family never got tested so it does not help much. And it is expenisve.

Michelle- How did your appointment go today? (((hugs)))

    Tazzy- cute sayings and true.

had a delicious sandwich for lunch today. Whole wheat berry bread, cucumbers, avacados, sprouts and jack cheese. After all the junk food the last couple of days thought i would sneak in a healthy meal. Will be leaving for portland in a few hours and going out to dinner tonight. One of DH's vendors from the casino is sending us to a fancy smacncy restaurant for dinner all paid for including wine. I hope they have lobster! yummm!

debbie:  Seriously..they still have Realm on the market?  The last time I inquired, I was told it wasn't being made any longer.  I am going to google it and see because I really liked the smell and I can't wear too many perfumes.  I'll wear it to the association meeting for our development this week and see if it perks up the old geezers...hehe!  What am I saying...I'm one too:(

Happy Birthday fellow Gemini twins, Seaside and Debbie! And thanks for all of the birthday wishes, ladies.

Came home early since we had a professional dev day at work, and I was too tired to return to school afterwards to work on progress reports. So I am home contemplating a nap ( a rarity for me) while awaiting DS2 who will go out with us for my BD dinner. Looking forward to it!

This whole perfume thing is interesting....I wasn't familiar with Opium...how wierd that so many used it.....was it super popular?

Laurie, glad your little patient is enjoying recovery!!

In my sister's birthday card to me she sent an article about cruciferous vegetables containing goitrogens.....compunds that can slow thyroid function by stalling the absorbtion of iodine. They recommend cooking these vegetables as heat neutralizes the goitrgens. So now I a wondering if all my healthy eating of cruciferous veggies is making me tired!!! I see my pcp next week....will see what she thinks. If I buy into this, I will really miss my kale salads!!

    Off to nap a bit.....

OK ladies....I googled Realm, the perfume, and found it on PerfumeNet.com at a discounted price.  They have two kinds and the one I used was called Inner Realm...it's a lighter fragrance than the other one that is just called Realm.  I ordered a bottle and a smaller bottle for purse for only $16.99.  I hope it's the real thing and not some knock off.  The reviews on the site were awesome...everyone who wore it said that people warmed up to them quickly, both men and women, and always commented on the fragrance.  I'm only going to spray it on my clothes now since my bc dx.

Debbie - have a wonderful evening with DH.   I love your part of the world.   So make me wanna do a road trip to Oregon again.  Oh! and I agree with you about us being a great group of people on this thread.  So proud to be part of it

Laurie - glad to hear that DS#1 is well on the mend now.

Deborye - enjoy your evening at Legal Seafood - great name for a restaurant.

Carberry - glad they put a smile on your face - hope you are OK.

Had lunch on the way home - healthy one for me too - Asian Chicken salad.  Was really good.   But boy does it irk me that they charge $14 for a salad - still I guess we pay for the ambiance and company (didn't that make me sound cheap eh?) Smile

Just started raining here again... so if it dont stop soon wont be a bbq for dinner !

Green Tomato Pie recipe.  Slice tomatoes and pat dry.  Pour olive oil onto bottom of dish.  Layer tomato slices and sprinkle with bread crumbs and parmesan cheese.  Sprinkle with salt & pepper.  Build about three layers and then pour olive oil over top.  Cover with foil and bake in 350 oven until tomatoes are tender.

We had the green tomato pie for dinner with the leftover ground meat/cabbage skillet dish from last night.

Just got home from my doctor appointment and a fabulous dinner at La Morra, followed by my first dose of Xeloda.  How weird to self-administer your chemo!

La Morra was so fabulous!  Our friends met us there, she doesn't like meat but will eat chicken.  She ordered a cornish game hen that was grilled with a brick and she seemed to like it a lot.  I ordered the fixed price meal with wine pairing ($50 for 4 courses and 4 wines, a bargain I do believe).  The salad was bibb and frisee with a gorgonzola vinaigrette, then I had a small portion of linguine with a spicy tomato sauce and there was some salt cod mixed in.  It was to die for!  Then I had a sauteed flounder with a caper sauce, with some greens and pickled radishes (I think that's what they were).  And chocolate mousse.

As for the doctor appointment, it was a harsh dose of reality.  He was visibly upset by my progression and made a comment about bad things happening to his favorite patients.  And he commented that my cancer is "nasty", then said he had never seen anyone with a Ki-67 of 90% ( the cell proliferation rate).  He looked at my previous path report and it showed I was Her2+ (just one +) and they are starting to clinically trial Herceptin on some people who are slightly positive).  So we may have Herceptin in the bag of tricks to use after Vitamin X.  And he said that I might be able to have reconstruction after I have a visit from NED.  I'm planning on a nice long visit from NED!

We are tentatively planning a trip to the big island of Hawaii in October.  Hawaii is our most favorite place to visit, and this trip needs to happen while I am up to it.  Our son and his SO have a timeshare and will be going for the Ironman Competition on 10/13.

I hope all you birthday girls are partying, big time!  Enjoy every minute!!!
