So...whats for dinner?

eric - none of those, you just have a great sense of humor

Eric, ROTFL!
Nancy, the muscle spasms I get aren't usually in my calves), which stretching helps prevent and I can walk off or massage away. They're actually over my tibia--and the very stretches that prevent calf cramps are the ones that set off my tibial cramps! But often the tibial cramps come on spontaneously in the night--and in the worst ones, my ankle dorsiflexes (points my foot up) and my toes splay. Slightly less often, I get foot cramps (the kind caused by pointing my toes, which I can walk off while trying not to scream). I take Mg and K, but they don't seem to help. My orthopod once suggested it's the hardware (screws & plates) irritating the nerves in my muscle fascia--but if I were to remove that hardware my tibia would collapse, even disintegrate, necessitating more surgery or even an amputation. Nothing much else I can do, other than take something like Lyrica--which my insurance won't cover, makes me feel dopey for hours the next day, and can even cause weight gain.

I had a dinner plan last night. Rejuvenate the left over soba noodles, chicken, colored bell pepper dish with some broccoli and more sauce. It never materialized. Thirty minutes before time to eat I called in an order for shrimp poboys and fries to a nearby restaurant. DH went and picked up the order. The procedure went smoothly. The poboys were delicious. Bread was good. Shrimp large and cooked perfectly. Potatoes good.
The restaurant has opened for diners. DH observed that there were quite a few cars. I assume that the owners are following the Phase One instructions, tables spaced apart, only a percentage of the former number of patrons allowed inside.
I will probably discard last night's dinner plan and come up with another one that has a better chance of happening.
We have a couple of appointments at the end of May and plan to depart the first of June. I hope our little cargo trailer isn't too heavy to roll.

Thanks for the muscle discussion. These aren't really leg or foot cramps - I solved that problem long ago with 250 mg of mag/day. These are just the slow continual ache of muscles that have been overworked. Weird that it's only in my calves and strange that it has continued for 49 days. I'm used to muscle ache subsiding once the muscle is "broken in". But I agree, I don't think Voltaren will work. No way could I do ice since I'm always freezing anyway. I could try the warm compress, or a heating pad - but the issue is I don't want to wake up.
I'm interested in Special's casein protein idea. Anyone ever take Casein power or supplements? I got deep into a discussion of the difference between Casein & Whey and it was more than I wanted to decipher.
Upping my cheese intake will be easy. Dinner last night was a cup of cottage cheese with 5 Campari tomatoes.

Minus, thanks for allowing me to do my own “trug” research. I do love looking up words and wasn’t familiar with that one! Doubt I’ll have occasion to use it though.
We ate a lot of grilled chicken last week, and leftovers ended up in a faux lo mein I made using whole wheat angel hair. I even stretched that for more leftovers, which we finished last night. Only because DH picked up a giant bunch of kale, I made a big pot of my sausage kale veggie/bean soup, which I’ll probably try to use to reduce my cooking chores this week. I figure some of the frozen items from Trader’s along with the soup will make a full meal any day I feel uninspired to make a serious entree. Those days seem to be more frequent through this crazy sewing phase.
I thought we were winding down with our mask donations a bit, when suddenly we received a request from a minister in a large economically challenged town, alerting us to the dire needs her community faced. Most distressing was the fact that many food insecure adults and kids were not able to access their donated meals due to lack of masks (now required in our state). She was sponsoring a mask giveaway last Friday for all of those families, so we all got our machines buzzing and cranked out 150 masks. With other groups‘ contributions, she was able to distribute out over 300 masks! Next week, I’ll drive down and drop off more that we sew and it’s nice to have a bit of time to complete them. I will even dare to go to an open fabric store tomorrow to find some kid prints. Clearly since people need more than one mask each for sanitizing purposes, this ongoing project may occupy me for the rest of my years. Ha! I keep hoping to get to make a mask for myself that I really like...maybe will find a fave fabric tomorrow!
Carole, it’s good to hear that you will be starting your yearly journey North soon. Not sure if we will head to the lake for Mem Day “soft opening”. Our association pres hasn’t even decided if there will be a “season opening“ neighborhood meeting yet. This weekend, DS2 and fam are there while their condo is being shown in Boston. Pre-Covid they would have just stayed here, but It’s probably nice for them to have a total change of scenery, too.
Cherry, nice to see your post! You’ve managed a lot!
Special, I'm so glad that your DH had a good test result. May everyone experience the same!
Keeping my fingers crossed that all the “returns to normal” This weekdon’t create surges. I might have to stand on corners giving out masks to resistant wearers! LOL -
minus - I was thinking more about your muscle problem and also recalled that my California BFF participated in a CBD topical spray study conducted by a soccer friend’s DH who is at UC Davis. She raved about the sore muscle relief with the spray. If you Google CBD topical spray there are some commercially available. Just a thought. She is super active, walking, soccer several times a week, mountain biking, road biking, skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, etc. She is very fit but does drive herself to the feeling that she “did something” so that she challenges herself. Of course that results in some “hurts so good”sore muscles, and then she uses the spray.
-
You can now find topical CBD (spray, lotion, cream, balm) in most chain pharmacies, even Whole Foods. Online, I order the balm from Receptra Naturals and Mary's Nutritionals ("Muscle Freeze"); other brands I've seen at CVS are Endoca and Medterra. Topical CBD does wonders for my back, and was my go-to when I was recovering from arm surgery in 2018.
Dinner was potluck, as I was dealing with basement flooding (minor but still annoying, preventing the cats from accessing litterboxes; good thing I had disposables & extra litter upstairs) and my cable TiVO service suddenly refusing to connect to my network (even though the VoIP phone and computer are connecting just fine). Between trying to troubleshoot and finally calling tech support (who had to throw in the towel and set up a service appt.), I killed over an hour. Kitties are also finicky about their food--driving me nuts. Housekeeper supposed to come back tomorrow--if she can get through her alley (and she just finished mopping up her own basement). We had nearly 8" of rain over 3 days--5" of it today & tonight. No way Bob is getting his car out of the garage tomorrow, as the power line to it has almost certainly shorted out again and this time there are no construction guys next door to lift the door and keep it open--Bob is 70, I'm 69, and my housekeeper is 65. I will NOT let him take a taxi or rideshare and further risk his (and by extension, my) life to get to work. He is not the only doctor in the world; besides, the office is temporarily closed and there is a professional cleaning team coming to his office tomorrow to disinfect it. (He had a part-time nurse test positive--she doubtless caught it from a family member because everyone in the office distances and wears PPE).
So I had the other half of my quiche & salad from brunch and made him a sandwich, which he ate with leftover Japanese iceberg-miso salad from yesterday. Cellars threw in a slice of fudge cake this morning, so I nicked about 1/4 of it to go with a decaf breve almond milk cappuccino after supper. Delicious (the cake), but I can definitely go another year w/o having another. Not worth the guilt.

Eric, all I have to see about that “100% recycled toilet paper” is
-
Rib eye and a side of roasted asparagus.

Dinner two nights ago was a pork tenderloin with BBQ sauce glazed on about 10 minutes before it was done, and then again right as I took it out of the oven. Served with a butter lettuce and avocado salad and some roasted potatoes tossed in olive oil and rosemary prior. Last night was the leftover pork, corn, and some chipotle and bacon mashed potatoes (from a mix) that were good. Tonight will be stuffed shells with marinara that has hot Italian sausage. Debating on whether or not to make a peach cobbler with frozen peaches - it would make some room in that freezer. We have been buying everything bread that is baked in the Publix bakery - it is so good! I have been saving the heels and when I get enough I dice it up and make croutons out of it. They are really good, very crunchy, and so easy to make. That is on today's agenda, along with more masks for DH's office peeps. I have to go to the bank today to get a cashier's check for DD. She is selling her boat and took a significant cash deposit that we need to get into her bank account. She doesn't have a local bank, just the long time military bank we use. I have a local account so I can convert her cash to a check for her. I also need to take a sample of the universal flooring in the rental house - that floor is now discontinued and I have decided to tile that area instead, so I need to match the sample to a compatible tile. There is too much potential for the floor to get wet again even though we are moving the water heater outside. The washer and dryer will still be there and it is a small step up, so if there is a leak or overflow the water will travel down the step and we will be doing all of this again, on our own dime. The installer's insurance company agreed to our submitted estimate and we need the flooring so the repair can take place. This damage happened Mar. 6th, so it has been a slow process to get it settled out. So... I am going from not leaving the house at all to going several places all in one day, lol!

Special, I vote for the peach cobbler 😋
We’ve had rain and cloudy weather every day but not as much rain as you Sandy. I think we’ve had about 5 inches in the past five days. There is standing water in our yard and we’re on a slope. On top of that it’s 20 degrees below normal and once again we had to turn on the heat just to take the chill off due to a lack of sun. Worst May I can remember.
I had planned to work outside today but it’s too cold wet and windy so instead I’m attempting my own pedicure. Our nail salon is open and I’m sure they’ll all be masked (omg autocorrect just typed “naked”😲) but I’m not ready. I’m not ready for anything. Anyway, the self pedicure will be challenging since I can’t bend my right knee well and can’t get close enough to see what I’m doing. DH may have to assist. Wouldn’t be the first time.
Eric all I can say about the recycled toilet paper is “Ewww!”
The pork burgers won tonight.
-
auntie - peach cobbler it is then! LOL on the autocorrect to naked! - naked people in the nail salon with masks paints an interesting picture... I'm with you - not ready, even if everyone is appropriately dressed. It was weird in the bank, all bank peeps had masks and were behind plexiglass, but not all customers had masks. There used to be a fun guy who directed customers around to wherever they needed to go for services - he has been replaced by a huge guy that nobody in their right mind will mess with, which I am guessing is pre-emptive for troublemaking.
-
My Shipt order today brought me ingredients for my dishes today - lo mein for lunch and kung pao chicken for dinner yum yum yum! My first attempt into Asian cooking was delicious
-
Kung pao, my fave. Kudos
-
And lo mein - my favorite.
Dinner was a large salad w/whatever was left in the fridge. Grocery run for fresh produce tomorrow or Wednesday.
Getting quotes on painting the outside of the house. Range from $4800 to $8000. Eeek.
-
Dinner was pasta with (jarred) Alfredo sauce to which I added the last of the turkey breast ( roasted last week) and green peas. Dare I say easy peasy?
That's the last of the leftovers, have to put my thinking cap on and do a grocery store run. Need to swing by the pharmacy too.
-
Dinner was the low-carb faux pizza I froze Sat., followed by a salad I threw together from stuff in the crisper I had to use up. For the second time in a row I ordered basil from Instacart--and didn't get it. But this time they subbed out thyme. Now I have two packages, since some arrived on Sat. (And I have a plant in the garden now). Looks like a French omelet tomorrow for brunch--gonna ask my housekeeper if she wants one of the packages. My little basil seedlings are almost ready to be pinched back, but are a bit too tender to re-pot outdoors. So I'm using dried crushed basil leaves on my tomato salads. Bob brought home leftover fried chicken from his office--it's too tempting for me to eat. Last time he brought some home, I vowed to peel off the coating...but we all knew how that went. So it's better not to tempt myself. I think tomorrow night he'll have chicken and I'll have some frozen (non-breaded) Buffalo wings,
-
DH grilled sweet and hot (for him) Italian sausage for dinner. We leftovers from the last few days if a pasta veggie salad, vinegar based slaw and caprese salad.
I may have broken my baby toe or maybe just bruised it. I remember banging it on furniture maybe last night. Today after walking I looked and yep bruised. I have it tied up with my migraine cold pak from the fridge right now.⛑
-
reader - oh no! I have broken a number of toes - one about five minutes after landing in Italy when a suitcase fell on it, and another when we were out of town for a military retirement ceremony and the fully loaded luggage cart rolled over my foot. The ceremony was the next day and I only had high heels to wear! Surprisingly, it was ok, but my foot hurt like no other when I finally took my shoe off. All that to say two things 1) I need to stay away from all luggage, and 2) tape your pinky toe to the toe next to it - it really helps, ice it for the first day or two, but then warm compresses help the bruising and swelling dissipate, and take an anti-inflammatory, like Advil, if you can. Good luck! I feel your pain!
-
Last night was homemade eggplant lasagna out of the freezer. I heated it using the outdoor grill as an oven. Side was a large tossed romaine salad with many additions. Olive oil and white balsamic for dressing.
Today I will get out the multi cooker and cook the other half of the pork roast.
I'm glad to see businesses opening so that there is income for owners and workers, but I hope people don't lose their sense of caution. I believe the medical scientists who are skeptical that the Coronavirus will just go away.
-
Today was my every other week grocery run. Unfortunately I saw what Carole fears. The first HEB store I went to was PACKED, no 25% or even 50% of normal volume, and very few masks. Although I wanted their special ranch dressing, I decided it wasn't worth it. I made my way to a smaller store in further out in the burbs. They were still sanitizing the carts but only about 1/2 the customers were wearing masks. A couple of the vendors stocking shelves has masks down around their necks. And people made no effort to distance in the aisles. Since I'm only going to get fresh produce anyway, I'll go back to my regular Kroger in June.
-
Minus, I went to HEB today but to a different story. The number of people was OK, although they didn't seem to be counting numbers today. Saw a higher percentage of masks too, possibly because one employee in another of the HEB stores in town tested positive last week! Also, looked like almost everything has been restocked, exception being sanitizers which may be lack availability from manufacturers. Appreciate that they have sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer available at the doors.
In the 90s here today so dinner will chef salads.
-
Reader, I second Special's advice (I have broken all my toes except the big ones at least once). To that I'll add, elevate! It really, really makes a difference.
No idea what dinner will be--might treat myself to that leftover fried chicken breast if Bob comes home from work too late (probably having had dinner at the hospital). If so, will roast some brussels sprouts to accompany it. Tomorrow, shrimp and pan-roasted asparagus (ATK's recipe with cherry tomatoes & black olives). Had considered making shakshuka, but I already had a 2-egg French omelet for brunch.
-
Thank you Special and Sandy for the helpful tips. The icing has helped and I elevated it tonight while watching "My Man Godfrey" (1936). Great fun. And my toe does indeed feel better tonight. Bruising is impressive for such a small body part!
Dinner tonight was fresh made baked shrimp cakes, southern rice and coleslaw. We have a small local grocer I like to support so I masked up and went there today and picked up these goodies plus some meats. Also went to a garden shop. Lots of masks and disinfecting practices thank goodness.
-
Bob had to take his car to JiffyLube after he once again got a "Low Tire Pressure" warning on his dash (less than a month after buying new tires). They had him mask up and drive his car on to the skids while they changed his oil & filter, poked about below, straightened a dent in a rim (thank you, monster potholes!), tested for leaks and topped up the air in all four tires. They were masked and gloved and never had to get into the car. I'm due for an oil change next month, but my Subaru dealership does a similar routine (no more wonderful waiting room lounge with free cappuccinos, alas). I really need a car wash, but Bob says the risk of aerosolization might be too great. Think I'll just do a sponge-down/towel-off in the garage or alley.

Hello again! Tonite was sloppy joes and frozen green beans. Didnt feel like really cooking. LOL
I see the latest discussion is leg cramps. I take K and mag and still get them to the point of screaming occasionally. My feet will curl in as if I were in a coma, and it hurts. I try to stand up on them if I can but it doesnt always let me get my feet down.
This is going to sound nutty, but have any of you heard of soap in your bed to combat it? I didnt believe it either. BUT IT WORKS FOR ME!!! Mostly. Ive even put a bar in my pocket during the day if the cramps are bad. If Im having a session, I can get cramp after cramp, my thigh locks up over and over. Or my calf will lock up and my foot will contract and I will scream. But Ill grab that stupid bar of soap, and its cheap stuff from motels, in my pocket, and it calms down, and doesnt come back. Now, I dont know why or how and I DONT CARE, IF IT WORKS, because I dont like pain. I keep a bar in my bed under the sheet at my feet. If I fell it coming ill move my leg over to the bump of soap. Cramp gone. If is in my head, it still works. Give it a chance. If it doesnt work for you, you still have a bar of soap to use. I know its supposed to be ivory, but i use any bar. Sounds so stranfe, but Ive told other people about it, and only 1 person said it didnt help them. All the others, and ive told many, it helped. Ok, off my soap box ( pun intended)
Much love and cramp free to all
-
Moonflwr, yes, I have heard of the soap treatment with a majority saying it works. At one time it was Irish Spring that was recommended. Good to hear it isn't brand specific!
-
The soap works to keep my feet from curling under, but doesn't do squat for those tibial cramps that cause my foot to bend upward and toes to splay out. It might be a form of dystonia (back in Feb, my left index & middle fingers suddenly bent and nearly crossed--likely also a focal dystonia). The tibial cramps are exquisitely painful. And the last calf cramp left a bruise that took a couple of days to go away. In my 20s, I would get cramps in my armpits that caused me to sweat so hard my bra's dyes ran into my white shirt.
-
Last night was the pork roast and a side of speckled butter beans with brown rice. The butter beans were cooked with pickled pork.
