Chickadee ( I had to leave for several hours ) you said what I have been feeling since I read some of the drive-by posts this a.m.  so I'm sitting here nodding my head.  Like Mary I don't post too many things because I am not very good at it. 

I do feel the need to comment on one thing I read though.  It has to do with all the pom-poms and cheering on the other side.  My Republican family is just like that....no wonder it got harder and harder to read over there.  I got so tired of how in my family everything is some one else's problem or fault --- we are all about love and good will except when it comes to the Democratic party.  Never a let-down or discouraging word about their party.  It even carried over into other issues.....for the longest time life in their household seemed nearly perfect.  It was all love -- even when they were going without heat.  Sorry family, but to me that is the total epitome of stupid.  They signed on to the local Repubs headquarters/meeting place but had to stop going as they were getting dunned for money on a rather constant basis that W already extracted long before with them trying to keep up with taxes. 

So at any rate, I'm not reading  ( mild skimming from time to time ) because the heavy sense of total un-reality is so pervasive that it just re-stimulates all the sensations of lunacy I feel for my family.  If I need to go to la-la land, I'll just go over to one of their houses.

Sunflower - I had just posted that random factoid about Greta Van Susteran and Joseph McCarthy while listening to XM radio with CM and then heard this woman with her Communist comment.  Weird coincidence...maybe not.  This seems to be a ubiquitous (unfounded, need I say?) acqusation these days.  I'm quite interested in her "study it out" comment though.  Hmmm....LDS in origin?  It's hard to believe people like this really exist. but I guess I don't have to go far from here to see that every day.

I admire Athena's optimism that Obama will get re-elected, but after seeing that "skinhead" or whatever he is in that linked photo that River Rat posted and the ignorant woman in the clip that Sunflowers posted, I do fear that, as Chickadee said, "idiocy and unreasoning hatred" are continuing to rise.  I hope Obama can articulate his message and vision in the next two debates.  It's really going to be close.

Belinda, FDR got called some terrible things in his time. So did Kennedy. Hatred is the refuge of the ignorant. And that woman who called Obama a communist looks so DUMB - almost as brain-dead as the one who "informed" McCain that Obama is "a A-rab."

We don't have a stupidity gag rule in this country, and the media loves to bottomfeed on the lowest of the low.

Having said that, we must all VOTE - and be allowed to vote. Otherwise Obama won't win.

I don't believe that the woman in the clip knew what a communist was.  In my personal experience when asked a direct question on the meaning of terms they use, the average conservative cannot answer.  When asked what specifically they would do or their party would do differently, they cannot answer. They are talking point people.

But, not to be sexist, I had to school my local Tea Party leader in the difference between Socialism and Communism.  Honestly, he didn't know and admitted it.

Well heck, I was a union member, steward and chief steward, I'm retired, the occasional FEMA work makes me a govt worker..........cripes I must be evil incarnate to the mirror side.



However, I worked steadily from the age of 15. I always pay my bills, made sure i built a retirement savings starting at age 25, and I've managed a nice middle class life on a high school education.



But I'm a deadbeat I guess because I get SS disability.

I'm not a government worker.  I did however get laid off ( Realtor office ) but I did not go on un-employment.  I just went out and found some temporary work that worked into permanent.  I went through too many Republican in charge years and cannot retire.  Especially since I was unable to keep/afford my Insurance and it went a couple of years before my job did.  So the before Obama years were not real kind, but I guess my motto continues....you will have to hit me until I cannot possibly get up again.  Uncle is not in my vocabulary.

If one accepts the principle that government workers don't understand how private industry works, then I contend that a Vulture Capitalist does not belong running a government.

Our US Constitution states "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America".  This is the purpose of government.

Nowhere in there does it talk about making money for investors via taking over companies, scavenging every valuable thing in that company, including credit and employee pensions and then ultimately shutting down that company.

Edited to add:  The objective of a Venture (Vulture) capitalist is NOT to create jobs. It is to create money for it's investors!!!  If jobs are created, it's only an incidental occurance.  If it is more lucrative to borrow money against the company and scavenge it's wealth, causing people to lose their jobs, eventually, that is what the venture capitalist will do.  I am so sick of hearing that Romney knows how to create jobs ... no, he knows how to make money and in a not too altruistic fashion.  As far as I'm concerned, he's about 1) Making money for himself and 2) Making money for his church.  That's it.

If the government were about making money....  The people in Paulina, Oregon would not get US Mail.  Yosemite National Park would probably not exist. Our water would be polluted by Massey Energy.  Katrina would be considered a good outcome of a national disaster.  Food borne illnesses would be ubiquitous.  National Forests would be clearcut, if not totally burned down...... and on and on and on.

I think names say such interesting things about people sometimes. The word "mirror" suggests that you are looking at yourself or your own reflection. Our name, "I say yes, you say no..." (thanks to our esteemed thread leader BLUE) conveys that we can look outside of ourselves to see the rest of the world. We here aren't "mostly" or "all" this or that. We are a diverse groups of people but we share in common the ability to see outside of our own immediate interests. Those who only want to mirror themselves are by default closing off avenues to anything they either haven't experienced or don't understand. They are narrowing the mind, choking off debate and starving for new ideas.

And conservatives like Barbara post here because they, too, see outside of themselves, even if I disagree with their take. We should welcome that. It's not about ideology but about personality.

Unfortunately, the GOP is becoming increasingly self-absorbed and has expelled many prominent conservatives from its own ranks. I equally despise groups that are liberal but brook no opposition, and I once turned down a job offer in disgust over that issue. Liberals can be extraordinarily narrow-minded too. And we may have our down times in history. But this isn't one of them. This is a time when conservatives are on the down and out.

Chickadee. stage IV cancer and you are still up to helping your neighbor in times of need - while corporate welfare kings draw bonuses for bad stewardship and subsidized red states don't care if you have insurance or not. You are working for no pay. SS disability is the least your country could do for you.

Republican cuts in government social programs will hit the Red States the hardest.  Republican increases in boondoggle government defense contracts will help the Blue States the most.

At times I really lose faith in people.  Using the body of the ambassador...

I have to say, though, if you need a lift, DH and I just took the afternoon to go see Argo.  Inspiring true story of rescue by the CIA.  (I read the guy's book a few years ago - the movie does spice it up a bit.)  Good dialogue.  Good acting.  And a reminder that CIA are also government employees.

Oh, Alexandria, I remember living through that! I remember when they came home after the Canadians gave them shelter! At the time, the Canadian Embassy was across from Brookings at Dupont Circle, and the folks at Brookings hung signs out of the windows saying "Thanks, friends!" We were all so happy! I do want to see that movie!
