I will take over bartending for awhile if ya'll like.  I am going to be up for another 2 hours.  However, I am going to disappear for about 30 minutes and take a walk.

Happy anniversary Linda and Mary! I am with Otter in that I wish I had met my DH earlier. Our 4th anniversary is in 9 days but we have been together since 2000.

Getting my hair cut and colored later today. I so love getting that done as I know my hair will look great for a day or two.

Happy Anniversary Mary (and a repeat shout-out to Linda).  Wow, the prevalence of child brides!  Who knew?  I met DH 15 years ago -- we've been married for 12 next month.  I wish I'd met him earlier, too, but it worked out OK in the end ... we found each other.  And I couldn't have met him too much earlier -- he is 6 years younger than I am -- too early and I would have been a cradle robber! Kiss

Keep celebrating those anniversaries -- now that we are older and busier, we don't have a lot of free time.  Celebrate for the whole week!

Barbara .. have fun today .. it feels so good to have someone fuss with our hair!  I don't color my hair, but do like to have it styled.

Hope everyone has a good day!

britchick, i'm late to this thread but also want to express my gratitude for your concise and intelligent posting - and wonderful humor. i hope you return some day, near or far, but understand why you need to take a break.

i hope the trolls calm down and keep to their own threads. Mods, heads up on these posters. If the pattern is clear to us, why isn't to you?

    Happy Anniversary Mary & Linda!

We are going to have another scorching hot day here in Montreal.  The weather so far is amazing!  My vegetable garden is growing so much.  I can't wait to start eating the tomatoes!

Britchick, again, I am sorry about how you were treated.  Sometimes it is better to take a break from the boards than deal with the insanity.

I am suffering very badly from:

    a) The weather

    b) The weather

    c) The weather

Faulty reasoning annoys me more under these circumstances.

I hope everyone has a better day than I am having.

I am sort of crumbling or breaking up - and I am avoiding the outdoors as much as possible, too.

It only promises to get worse around here. Eve the radio weatherman sounded solemn this morning.

I have to go to Johns Hopkins on Friday for a Dr's appt, which means I have to travel from Washington to Baltimore. Not fun at all. That day may be the worst.

Athena, is there any place you can go to that has AC?  The heat is so tough to take sometimes.  I hope your day get better.  ((((HUGS))))

    Mary,

I have A/C so I am mostly in a nice, cold office. For some reason, though, the heat manages to affect me even them. I get anergic, anemic and restless. I gulp oodles of Gatorade and, because I am on medication that makes too much sun and heat contraindicated, I am careful to avoid it (sun and heat) when I can.

In DC we also have a problem of air quality. For example, I used to live in Miami Beach. It was quite often in the 90s but there was always an ocean breeze and the air quality was good. Here, we are in swampland with no real air corridor and the air quality gets very bad and at times dangerous for people with conditions like asthma.

Anyway, I WILL STOP WINING... I am not the only one in this weather, for God's sake. No violins requested. Sealed

ETA: One more self-pity trip: Taking the DC metro can make any bad weather experience intolerable.

    Thank you for listening. Wink

Athena, well, maybe not violins, but how about thoughts of ICE CUBES being rubbed on your arms, and something COOOOOOOOL to drink, other than G'Ade - tho that's good.  This weather, from my 20 years in DC, is not tolerable.  No other way to describe it.  Just not livable.

I know what you mean about A/C - I always used to feel like I was in a boc, surrounded by a swamp.

I think we're a bit luckier then what the midwest had the past few days, but that doesn't make it any more palatable.   Hoping your Friday journey on the beltway is easy, fast, and succssful.

(((hugs))) to Athena.  Don't think of it as whining ... you are just expressing your disapproval - loudly - to Mother Nature.  Now perhaps she will wake up and turn the darn oven off!

I'm cranky about it too.  I don't do well in heat and sun either.  And even if I wouldn't be going anywhere anyway it's just the idea that it's too darn hot to go somewhere if I wanted to that makes me feel confined.  And cranky.  Did I mention cranky?

Edited to add ... you have to take the Metro in this.  You have earned the right to moan, groan and complain all you want!

I love the heat as long as I have a pool or ocean nearby.  Since I have neither :) I stay indoors alot or crash a friend's place who has a pool!   I still do my gardening, but I do it in the morning or evening.

I will do some reading on my deck in the afternoons when it is shady.  I have to be careful in the sun since I have lupus.

Athena, it's okay to whine, even if you aren't the only one dealing with this horrid weather.  :)

I can sympathize.  I feel drained of energy lately; and I dread dread dread going outside. I keep looking out the LR window and seeing that sunny sky, with all the sparkles from the leaves on the trees and bushes.  Once in awhile, a breeze blows and the tree branches wave a little.  It looks really tempting... and then I open the door and the blast of steamy heat hits me.  <sigh>

There's a farmer's market every Thursday afternoon in the summer here.  I want badly to go there and get some more blueberries and some good peaches.  But, it's sooooo hot; and it's all outside in a field with no shade.

Even so...  Yesterday I got an email from a family member in a far upper-midwestern state.  Her message noted that her city had "won" against mine -- it was 6 degrees hotter there than it was where I live.  I suppose we should feel lucky here in the Gulf Coast, because it hasn't been quite as hot lately as it has in the midwest.  I do wish we could get some of those coastal breezes, though -- we're too far inland.

There. See, Athena?  I can whine right along with you, even though other people are having a harder time than I am.   FWIW, faulty reasoning always annoys me, regardless of the weather.

Thanks, Otter. I was raised very strictly, so even if Armageddon has just come upon you, you are not supposed to complain.

And yes, anyone in the Midwest is in for a very bad time.

It is comforting to hear this. Not everyone loves the heat and sun and humidity!

For anyone interested in reading about Metro, here is a superb blog:

Lindasa: Probably because we weren't working and were always in a swimming pool - and in a place with good air quality. And a private beach. Need I go on? Wink

Now we are pounding the pavement in a rush, being made late by everyone when we are not busy making ourselves late, and hearing constantly that it is only going to get worse. Oh, worrying about beauty and wrinkles and skin and how fat or thin we look and whether we can be seen at meetings looking that sweaty, etc.... Adult life is so complicated. Tongue out

((( Athena ))) The heat doesn't bother me so much down here, but the humidity today is stiffling!  It's hard to breathe and I just had to run errands to four different places.  Thankfully, home now and working on a report in the A/C.

Even with A/C the heat is oppressive.  No breeze or ai rflow here today.

Linda .. I was born and raised in San Diego, so the temps were always great as a kid.

Otter .. my blueberries suck this year.  I don't know what went wrong.  Maybe not enough water.  But out of four bushes, I didn't get any blueberries .. same with the tomatoes.

Whining is allowed.  It's good to have someplace to complain about the weather and taking the metro on a Friday in DC!!

    hugs,

    Bren

Hilarious, Athena. I *used* to love the Metro when I lived there BUT is was very new then. (I moved in 96). But I developed a love/hate relationship a couple years ago when I was on a long term contract in Bethesda and was staying in Kensington. I would get on at Forest Glen go all the way downtown then all the way back out to Grosvenor. Usually it would take 40-45 minutes BUT there were a lot of days where it was > 1 1-/2 hours. But conversely the drive would take about 45-1 hour so I gritted my teeth and did it anyway.

    Mary, Happy Anniversary!

Lindasa, yeah, don't you wish we could've held on to that?

Athena, you're only saying what most of us are feeling about this heat wave.  It's good to hear that we're not the only ones, that we're not weaker.  Even the the strong are bothered by this...plus you have to take the Metro - that warrants its own complaints.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone.

Husband came home last night, said, "Happy Anniversary!" and proceeded to tell me that he had an "irregularity" on his EKG that he had at his physical yesterday. Yay. It's always something. Now he has to go see a cardiologist.

Oh, bother, YramAL - I hope it's not something serious. I am a beneficiary of the miracles of modern medicine whre the heart is concerned, so I'm hoping your DH is too.

Barbara - Metro used to be ok until a few years ago. It seems that the more scandals erupt the worse it gets. You would think the opposite would happen.

((((Athena)))))  Ok to whine and complain all you want!  After all we have cancer and we get to have our pity parties, our "wine" and anything else we want Wink

I can't tolerate the heat like I used to.  Add hot flashes and now it is unbearable.  I can't sleep at night even with Ambien because of the hot flashes waking me up.

Re heat wave:  I just realized that the hottest day here this summer, Thursday, is the very day we have concert tickets.  Yikes.  I think I will fry!

Pip .. what concert are you going to?  Is it an outdoor venue?  I had so hoped the weather would be cooler up in your neck of the woods!  Hope it cools off by mid August.

Mary .. hoping everything is okay with your husband.
