many sorts on their way to E. They are quite wet, RAIN RAIN RAIN - flash floods, ah, well, they're still very good sorts

GG - the main "problem" with hollyhocks is fungus. There are some good not so poisonous sprays for it. Very common with hollyhocks. We are being invaded ( INVADED!) by japanese beetles, who always seem to be in twos, being, ah, well, to be polite, sexually active. My friends squoosh them with their bare fingers - I have a jar of soapy water, and catch them between lid & jar. Maybe someday when I'm less of a "city girl" 'll learn to squoosh!
They are so invasive this year, eating ALL the flowers on the hollyhocks, leaves look like lace, now they're going after my hanging ivy leaf geraniums ( which I over wintered in side so they are marvelously HUGE, Pacific Lavendar is the colour, and so I'm on the war path to protect them.
Hollyhocks are the predominant English cottage garden flower. Thanks for the pic, Blue, LOVE IT.

Sunny -- We were inundated with Japanese beetles the last two years and finally found the "solution". If you can find Neem Oil (it's used in East Indian cooking and would be available in any Indian food stores -- if you have any around you or try on-line), mix 1 tablespoon with 1 litre of water and 1/2 tsp liquid dishwashing soap in a spray bottle. Shake it vigorously each time before spraying on your flowers (don't forget the underside of the plants!).
There are some commercial products that claim to work, but they have a miniscule amount of Neem Oil and are pretty much useless.
And you're right -- the little buggers multiply like mad, but unless you can find their nesting places in the spring (at just the right time of course???!!!!) and destroy them, then the solution above seems to be the best bet.
-
I've been using japanese beetles as tennis balls. Using Ray's tennis racket to swat them. They are eating my $200 trees.
Thanks for the info Linda!
-
I hear ya E! Mine are all gone too! I'll send you some of Wendel's.
-
NEEM OIL - oh, bless, bless, bless you. I jsut can't spray poisonous stuff - and I KNOW about neem oil for cooking - so good to hear japanese beetles don' tlike it.
HOW DO I RECOGNIZE THEIR NESTS IN SPRING???? I will become Sherlock Sunflower to find them

-
gg - the fungus on hollyhocks is called RUST = and they're a zillion different kinds, super common problem
You're supposed to pick off the bottom leaves where it is, and not put in compost pile, an several other things I don't bother to do... -
-
Did anyone make hollyhock dolls when they were younger? My GM had huge bushes of double ones. She showed us how when we visited for the summer. Beautiful pictures.
-
For all the dog lovers out there!

(E, I do have a few extra sorts I will send. DDs have been making me happy today!

Hoping it is on about 8:30 here. Love M. Fox ( my dad had Parkinson's ) and I think I'd really like the show. By 9 - 9:30....I'm usually thinking bed time soon more than anything else and my powers of concentration for anything start to wane on a very serious level.

The show looks great. Micheal J. Fox is one of my favorite actors. Glad to see him back on TV.
-
Yeah, he will bring more attention to the disease. He's a tough nut!
Here's another one of my favs. Still miss him!

-
Royal baby mania here as well. Many public building etc have been lit up blue must go and look tonight. it has been good news after our latest earthquake in the capital.
Thanks for the smiles this morning. Yesterday I lost my sorts completely which is why I played with my camera. A friend has lost her 10 year battle with BC, knew it would happen but just hate things.
Here is my tui slightly larger. I think it is a young bird or a female which are smaller than the male.

-
Thanks Alyson, they make a funny noise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THpoT_hYHzQ

Ooops ... don't know why the pic is so big. I copied it from another website and couldn't adjust the size.
Enjoyful ... I'll see if I can find some sorts for you this afternoon. I've been so sick and cranky today. I'll have to see if Tank has some extra sorts ... his are wonderful and happy!
Gumby ... How did the inspection go today?
Susie ... Your grands are beautiful. I'm so glad you're having a great time with them.
Blue ... What show is MJF going to be in?
hugs,
Bren

Great picture, Bren. Thanks for posting it.
BTW - house passed the sewer inspection today. Just the appraisal to get through now....

-
Thanks Bren - it is a bit hectic here - got stuck baby sitting the little one this morning - he was actually fine and just played until Mummy came home. I'm a bit annoyed as neither of my kids are offering to help me with anything. Mark has offered to cook dinner one night but I don't like anything he's suggested - fussy woman I am. He turned his nose up at the broccoli I cooked last night - there was nothing wrong with it, so I've turned into Cranky Nana.
-
Holy cow! If my kids offered to cook mud stew I'd be delighted. Hope the rest of your visit goes well Suzie.
-
My kids seem to be annoyed with each other - she's precious and he's pompous. She is actually complaining about changing the babies dirty nappies - she usually gets her DH to do it - for God's sake!!!
-
Susie, sounds like you may need a vacation after they leave. The poor babies. Give them lots of loving, they need it.
-
Sure does Juliaana - Little one alseep, big one gone out to the park with Daddy and an old friend of his and his child. Quiet time for Nana.
It IS all about the babies.
-

We are here Athena.
Suzie sounds as though you are having some 'fun' - aren't family wonderful?
