    I have this wierd reaction to Downton Abby - when I hear too many good things about a TV program or movie I get sort of allergic to it and don't want to watch it. Same thing happened with Titanic, which I refuse to see and wish people would stop discussing. Tongue Out 

    I will accept a certain amount of raving, and after that my cup runneth over, it seems. Because I had no objection to watching Schindler's List, or seeing The Sopranos or Six Feet Under. Maybe in those cases the difference was that I FIRST heard the critical acclaim.

    Athena, I get what you are saying. I finally watched Titanic, although that horrible song should have given me an idea of what to expect.

    Downtown Abbey is not Titanic. It is light entertainment with great costumes and a couple of really fine actors, but it is not all kitschy, sentimental and horrible.

    I missed the Pope resigning. As a former catholic, I refrain from comment.



    Downton Abbey. About the only thing I enjoy on TV anymore. I really like this season because each character represents a social more that is falling reluctantly by the wayside. I was kind of hoping the "Thomas" character would leave though. He's so smarmy, but then again you need him to stir the pot. Maybe they can knock off Ms Obrien. She's really nasty. Being of Irish stock, I like Branson. Give em hell.

    I agree with y ou both about Downton. I came late to the party. Had to do a crash catching up of first two seasons. I despise Thomas, but for a few minutes last night I felt sorry for him. Why haven't they caught on to O'Brien. She beyond hateful. Sadly, I know some real life O'Briens.

    Have I mentioned lately that I'm sick to death of cancer - even silly not all that important kinds?  Well, if I haven't - I am (sick of it that is).  Went to the dermatologist this morning and he biopsied three "suspicious" sites.  I'm almost positive that one of them is nothing - but am pretty much equally positive that the other two are cancer.  I'm hoping for basal.  For sure not melanoma, but possibly squamous.  At least I can rest easy that it's not breast cancer on my skin, cuz it just doesn't do that!! 

    Sick of cancer - sick of it.

    Saying hi tonight....big surprise to me about the POPE as well.  I don't think I'll miss him.  I'm not Catholic by the way,but many of my friends and some family are.  So I keep up a bit. 

    On to other endeavors for the evening.

    Speaking of New York Fashion Week (alert - here I go again)...honestly, reading all the reviews you realize your taste, bad or good as it may be, is equal to that of all those people who do nothing BUT go to shows. Otherwise, how to explain the ooohs and ahhhhs and other noises of delight by New York's parochial fashion set over this, from Alexander Wang:

    The following look wouldn't be so bad were it not for the fact that you know you'd have to shelve out thousands to buy it (when Wal Mart probably has the same basic thing):

    What I am really liking are the collections this season by Carolina Herrera and Donna Karan. They are very different. Herrera is probably outside of my price range and also my social life one - her clothes are best for the cocktail party circuit, but I love how she puts a premium on both comfort and elegance. You can tell she is a woman because her designs are practical and flattering to women of all ages. For this collection, she drew inspiration from the 1940s:

    She has been panned by the critics for not being risky oir avant guarde enough, but they can't argue with her good taste or her longevity. I'd wear Carolina any day of the week:

    Then there is Donna Karan, who I have occasionally patronized over the years. She has always been very New York and, at times, "edgy" but she is capable of evoking a variety of themes and moods. Her clothes are very sensual, she mixes fabrics interestingly, IMO, and she can be someone to wear on both formal and informal occasions:

    Athena, I love the blue one. I'm a sucker for that color but its lovely and flattering. I think the 40's was a great time for fashion. I think women looked not only stylish but powerful. Well if you could afford the clothes.

    Athena, that Herrera red column dress would work on a flat chest too, especially if the band was bright and the column itself dark.

    Belinda, I must agree with the dowager duchess on that one.  Great line!

    Alexandria, the funny thing is that just yesterday I was planning to drape exactly this design to test it out for a summer dress. Especially for a wedding, if the band at the top were embellished in some way, and the column was of thick silk crepe, perhaps with some small pleats at the top, I think it would look really good. Since you wouldn't want black for your dd's wedding, any restrained color would do probably, a steel grey, navy, dusty violet, dark green perhaps. It depends what suits you.

    Athena, I agree with your comments on Carolina Herrera and Donna Karan.  I also like that blue dress.  I love anything that defines/accentuates the waist.
