Lance lives here south of Austin, so lots of really disappointed folks. Livestrong is trying very hard to keep their focus on cancer and hopes this doesn't destroy their efforts. The Mayor says there are no plans to rename the Lance Armstrong Bikeway here as he said its purpose is to encourage everyone on the cancer journey.



I am very disappointed and did love cheering him on once upon a time.

Belinda - I think I recorded the Oprah interview, but didn't know it was 2 parts, so thanks.  I haven't missed a Tour de France since Miguel Indurian won his first yellow jersey in 1991.  I'm a huge Tour de France fan.  Beyond the bike riding, it is the best aerial tour of the most beautiful parts of France you will ever see.  I won't lie, the best tours for me were when Lance was involved and winning...not necessarily because of Lance, but because his teams were always so talented and I loved the strategy (and his teamate George Hincapie).  Lance, without drugs, would have still been a spectacular athelete.  I've always thought him to be a bit too arrogant, but now he seems more like the Intimadator.

I was just watching the evening parade of idiots raving about the president's proposals.  I don't get it.  i really don't.  We regulate cars. We regulate appliances. We regulate food additives, for gods sake.  As Jon Stewart said the other night, a gun owner can legally sell a gun to a drunk, and the only time law enforcement can do anything, is if the drunk gets into a car. One argument i liked: if you go by the NRA logic, you shouldn't have speed limits because some people will break the law.

The hysteria on the far right just shows how nuts they are.  Most gun owners, myself included, want background checks on ALL purchases of guns.  Most gun owners, myself included, do not think that assault weapons or high capacity magazines belong in civilian hands.  To equate obama with hitler and Stalin for sensible gun measures that Reagan favored is insane.

Insanity is rampant!  Probably the  most insane thing I heard yesterday was some "idjut" claiming (on cable news) that if the slaves in the 1800's had been allowed to have guns, the Civil War could have been avoided.........

Here's an interesting discussion of the Second Amendment, the historical events that gave rise to it, the discussion surrounding its genesis, and thoughts of the individual states.  Of note is the concept that the "militia" (never really defined in the Constitution) was intended as a substitute for a standing army.  So if we have a citizen militia, armed to the teeth, can we cut defense spending significantly?  :-D

Suz, yes, I am pretty sure the founding fathers were not championing the idea of a bunch of rednecks running around loose with high-powered shotguns. I think the idea behind the 2nd amendment is sound. A properly armed and trained population is much less likely to submit to tyranny.

Switzerland has an extensive home militia, and in places like Denmark we also had them as part of Gladio (US idea for firstline defense against Soviet invasion, a real concern at the time). My grandpa was a member of such a militia and had a collection of guns in a locked cabinet in the basement. The militia used to train fairly regularly on the weekends.

My proposal, which I've seen elsewhere, is that to stop debating  the intentions of the founding fathers.  Assume original intent was private ownership of guns, so we should allow unlimited purchase by anybody - of the muskets that were the firearm of the Revolutionary War.   Single shot muskets, where you have to put the bullet and powder into the barrel and then tap it all down with a rod.  Yup.  No problem with umlimited purchases of those.  I don't think we'll have too many mass shooting with muskets.

Just also want to say, the people raving about Obama being a hypocrite maybe haven't noticed that his executive order provide for training for first responders and school officials in shooting situations and incentives for school to enhance security.

Shame on me, I guess I'm being something of a show-off.  Even I am not sure how I did that.  After I downloaded Picasa quite some time back now, I can just rt.click on any picture and it will automatically give me a drop-down menu where I can just hit the word copy, then go to whereever I wanted to copy to and hit the paste button and there it is. 

I'm looking forward to the ceremonies on Monday.  Still amazed once in a while when I think of how one-sided his re-election  was after all.  It could have been much different, but extreme rt. wing and ultra conservative is not a good combination at all.  It so energized the left and it is what will continue to provide so much energy. 

Also find it hard to believe that so many of the latest 'arguements/ads, and rhetoric is so blatant.  Then again, so much of it is meant to 'stir' the nut jobs so here comes the money.  Somewhere in so much of this it seems to come down to the money.  Must be hard to have a straight face now and then though..........as per all the denials that the NRA ad wasn't about the Obama's children. 

Off to get some work done.

The President's proposals make funding available for additional police officers and security resources for schools.  With the schools and local authorities having the decision making authority on how to use them.  Seems like an approach that few could argue with ... if they would bother to read what it actually says/does.

Linda ... slaves vastly outnumbered their 'owners'.  If they had access to guns they would no doubt have killed off their 'owners' ... so I suppose it could be accurate to say that the Civil War would not have been necessary to stop slavery.

Kam - thanks for the suggestion, I didn't think of putting matcha into our morning vegie drink.   What I don't like about green tea is the taste.  Hubby says it tastes like drinking alfalfa, but frankly, I think that gives alfalfa a bad rap.

About Lance Armstrong.  It just pisses me off that he cheated.  I have never been a big fan of bike racing, but seeing someone win so consistently was exciting (especially since he was an American... ).  I don't see how someone can feel good about themselves if they win by cheating.  It's just wrong.  His mea culpa (I haven't watched the interview and have no interest in doing so) doesn't mean squat IMO,

Yorkie - what shocks me most is the first picture.  Indians in western wear.  That was something rarely (like 5 people total) seen the year I was there (1997).  You really did go to some of the most interesting places in India....

GG - my only complaint about Matcha is gas!! I like the taste in my "green tea smoothie"...almond milk, matcha, frozen bananas, watermelon, but I'm having less of those as almonds are pastuerized, watermelon is high glycemic, blah blah and I need more greens.

Cycling is one of the dirtiest sports as far as blood doping, EPO, etc..  I think it was the exception to not use these performance enhancers (Fabian Cancellara  - AKA my dream boy, has indicated he does not drug). Lance was a thug about it though.  Didn't matter who he hurt in the process or that he used intimidation to keep his teammates or the press in line, destroying careers in the process, which would also include families of those.  

I think he hopes for some fashion of redemption because he has nothing now (except maybe a few Swiss bank accounts, to be sure).  He's a smart talented man, but has used his talents poorly.  There is no doubt he is controlling these interviews for an outcome he has already decided upon, but this game is beyond his control.  I haven't seen much sympathy for him, anywhere.

It will be interesting to see where his "famous friends" come out on this.  Jake Glyenhal, Matthew McConnaughy....he has his groupies.

What most got my attention, though, is the Taj Majal one - is that smog?

Armstrong - I am not pissed now that the cat is out of the bag and he has lost his titles. What a human tragedy and waste of talent and overload of hubris. That man could likely have won the titles with no assistance. What a huge lie, but this does not negate his natural prowess as an athlete or his work in Livestrong.

I see this in "technicolor." Punish him and everyone who cheats - yes. Realize that he was a great athlete who helped the cancer cause - yes. Take a lesson to yourself and your children on the perils of hubris - absolutely!

Armstrong and every other cyclist who doped are fully responsible for their actions, but these scandals threaten to dessimate the sport, and THAT is the cycling governing body's fault. When there is that much cheating, it is institutional.
