My New Years Wish
I pray that those who have no evidence of disease will continue to be healthy in 2012.
I pray that those who underwent surgery and treatments in 2011 will be cancer free.
I pray that those newly diagnosed will gain the knowledge that dispels fear; and that they will take that journey that no one wants to take to have a complete recovery.
I pray for families and friends who walk with us along our path.
I pray for wisdom for all the health care workers who we help us destroy cancer.
I pray for more research and better treatments that restore quality of life for all stages.
I pray for a cure or a vaccine -- and an end to the suffering and loss of our sisters.
And I pray that I will always remember to pass on the blessings I've received from so many who have comforted and helped me in my journey.

Hi everyone!  I'm new to this forum and my "name" refers to my attitude of positive thinking, otherwise known as denial.  I was diagnosed with DCIS, then small (2mm) invasive cancer in Sept/Oct 2011.  Lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy in Dec. showed NO additional cancer.  Next step is consult with Radiation Oncologist.  I DON'T WANT TO DO RADIATION!  I am willing to do hormone therapy (est/prog positive.)  Am I nuts?  Does anyone have strong feelings one way or the other regarding radiation treatment?

welcome notme. I did do rads and it was not bad. I did get fatigued, though. Others will be along with their 2 cents worth!

notme583, I did rads, and had no problems at all. No fatigue, just redness and some itching. I didn't peel or anything. It was the easiest part of my treatment. I've had more problems with the tamoxifen, frankly, but even that is not too bad. Everyone reacts differently to treatment...some sail through with no problems, others have more adverse side effects. If I were you, I would talk to the radiation oncologist, see what they have to say, and then decide.

notme583 - Have you considered a second opinion concerning radiation?  Your tumor is relatively small.  My RO is participating in a study that irradiates only the lumpectomy site and wider margins, but not the entire breast.  Pathology has shown that typically small tumors with no node involvement are usually contained within certain margins around the primary site.  It would have been 10 treatments instead of 30.
I chose 30 whole breast txs because I know that there was cancer in that side, and I wanted the insurance that if there were undetected cells they would be dealt with.  I will also take hormone suppressors.
Every person is different, so I hope you can get your questions answered; then make the best decision.

Found the biggest problem with Rads was the fatigue..........everything else went very smoothly....I was told because of my age I didn't n'eed Rads by my MO, but my RO, and my BS did not agree, so I listened to them, and went ahead and did 33 treatments................not bad.

I did lump and rads and had a hard time.  I used a wonderful cream called X-Clair.  It is expensive but would hate to think how I would have been without it as I was bad enough with it.  Ended up with lot's of post rads problems, I am 11 months out of rads and finally healed and out of pain.  Many people have no problems with rads and others like me have lot's of problems.  I don't think they really know who that is going to be.  I think you have to listen  to what the Dr's say and then listen to your gut.

Rads, for me, was the worst. I had proton beam radiation, so I knew my skin would take a beating. But, my lord, the pain. My skin peeled off, especially under my arm. I fell asleep at 5:00 in the pm. It was so unlike me. Everything's good now, though.
