Mickey, I'm a Bears fan and had a long spell since 1985! If it gets really bad, it is better for your mental health to just not watch. Just like the stock market. LOL!

Heidi, I'm a "hard stick" and I have learned how important it is to be hydrated.

Jo, what fun dressing as an elf. Glad you had some fun even if the thunderstorm got you.

Claire, good reminder to keep it up on the exercise front.

Ruth, great pic of the WWW and the Christmas celebration.

With Christmas prep, my exercise minutes have dwindled some this week and only have 87. I stood at Ulta and went to Costco yesterday instead of going for a walk. I still need to do a little grocery shopping and wrap and give the dog a bath and... but maybe I can find time for a walk around the lake today. I have an 11 day break from work and really want to take that time to focus on exercise and try to work my way up to where I was before the great sickness.

Finally got up for the most fabulous yesterday of skiing. It was wonderful to be out in the mountains, "rediscovering" muscles and getting back my skiing groove. Always forget how difficult the first day out is, especially if you have to drive almost 2 hours each way.

I can tell that the exercise did something as hurts to sit down. Pictures below. 2 days to Christmas!!! Planning another day out if weather is sensible....no rain, mountain passes are open. - Claire

Nice Claire! I think that you and I are the closest on this board to each other's orbits. Did you go backcountry, ski area, or nordic skiing?

I applaud every one of us who makes the time and effort to do steps, go to class (Ruth you're the queen of these), or to get outside in these hectic days.

I've been battling a little bit of one-year PTSD as my diagnosis was a year last weekend, surgery the day after Christmas. Getting outside fixes it for sure. Have been fat biking (so fun), and it counteracts the knee-crushing fun of backcountry skiing. Here's a great photo from last week's day in the mountains with my best girlfriends (we have all been friends since the 80s and 90s), and of course the Lucky Dog.

    Have a wonderful Christmas everyone!

I went Nordic skiing at Stevens Pass. There is a biathlon training area on this course. Too early for the place I really love to ski. The unfortunate news is that the place was just taken over, so no chili until they upgrade the kitchen. (Not that I can figure out how a vat of simmering chili is dangerous health-wise.) I will go again on Christmas Day as celebrating solo this year, but this time to the Sno-Park on I-90.

Today, it's a run now that the rain has tapered off. Trying to keep up my fitness.

Something to think about with doing a lot of outdoor exercise. My sister is bummed to have osteopenia whereas my T-scored are still in the normal range. But she has virtually eliminated any outdoor exercise. She does go to the gym every day, doing treadmill and weights. 15 years ago, she and her husband snowshoed, played golf, did walks outside, etc. At one point, she taught a fitness class.

I think somewhere in there is a lesson about not realizing that you are in fact less active than previously, and that things like trail running make a difference to both bone health and balance. I know I noticed a difference in my balance and how I walked when I took up running about six years ago.

Which should serve as a reminder to head out the door as dressed for my run and the skies are clearing Happy Squish, squish..... - Claire

    Hello all,

Joining this group for inspiration. I’m three days out from finishing radiation and struggling with fatigue. Have been able to walk 20 minutes a day during rads most days instead of the necessary 30 for osteopenia. Today did 25 minutes, so hard.

Have done shoulder work this morning and need to do hip work this afternoon while a guest is here. Guess they won’t miss me for a few minutes.

Wishing you all a good day and merry holiday

egregious- just do a little bit each day and it will become easier. Keep moving.

Claire and homemadesalsa -great pictures. I love to see the ski pictures. It was 75 degrees and sunny here today in Miami. I have my fire going because there is a chill in the air. Also I love the fireplace during the winter. Weight-bearing activities are extremely important.

Welcome ergegious, just do what you can for now. It will come back but it takes awhile, which, we all know, is frustrating.

Gorgeous pictures Claire and Salsa! Salsa, 'anniversaries' are hard; especially for the first couple years until you get it all sorted out in your mind, Keeping active is the best antidote, IMO. Claire, one of my 'soap box' ideas is that, along with a formal exercise plan, EVERYONE (except really serious athletes) needs to find ways to add movement into our daily lives. Think of how much less movement we have in a normal day than even our parents. My mom had a big garden, she canned, she made her own bread, all meals were from scratch with a big cast iron skillet and other pots and pans; mixing, stirring, kneading, beating etc. The washing machine was down in the basement & in nice weather all the laundry was dragged outside and hung on a clothes line to dry....and then you ironed everything! When opening the garage door, answering the phone, even changing the TV channel, you had to get up and move. We on the other hand all need to find ways to make things LESS convenient (end of lecture ).

Yesterday I did a 15 minute ab routine, spent 15 minutes on the treadmill, and spent the rest of the day running around shopping for all the rest my groceries (if I don't have it now, we will have to go without!). Today I went to Yoga & Pound, arranged all the ingredients to various dishes together, set the table, wrote up a cooking timeline, and am trying to get the turkey defrosted. It's been in the fridge since Thursday night but still feels pretty frozen to me.

Welcome egregious! Keep at it: it will get easier!

Loving the ski pics. It is supposed to snow here again, possibly fairly heavily, Christmas night after a fairly long dry spell. I am also on a holiday break from work (we closed Friday at one pm and don't open again until January 2nd, yay!) Planning to snowshoe later in the week but in the meantime I am fighting the urge to be lazy: yesterday I did a lot of grocery shopping and some gift shopping, then cleaned house. Today I cooked earlier in the day and then took a nice long walk with hubby. Tomorrow we are doing the Christmas Eve Farolito Walk in Santa Fe: I've never been but hear it is beautiful (the famous Canyon Road and surrounding areas are lit up with farolitos, which most of the world call luminarias, and there is music, caroling and bonfires). The pace will be slow: they close the streets but it gets crowded (30,000 people expected which is a third of the town's population!) and cold. We are going out for an early dinner first: will leave our car there and just walk up to the festivities. Altogether probably 2.5 miles of walking, which is fine, though it will be COLD tomorrow night...

I did find this article today, which is inspiring. I have a bit of 'chemo brain' and need all the help I can get!

ruth- my mother still refuses to use her clothes dryer. She loves hanging her clothes on the line. We absolutely hate it when she dries sheets and towels on the clothesline. They are stiff as a board and abrasive but they smell nice. She just laughs and says she doesn't want to develop any lazy habits. This is an 84 year old woman who walks 3 miles daily. You can keep the good old days. My 97 year-old aunt in Tennessee cans her own vegetables every year. Her 74 year old son plows the soil. Up until two years ago she manually planted the seeds for her 1 acre garden. She still cooks for herself and maintains her home. She gave up mowing her lawn when she was 90 years old. On my mother's side of the family we have really good genetics and what they call " good stock" I can assure you I'm not going to be plowing any fields, hanging my clothes on a line or canning any vegetables. LOL. One thing I did inherit from my parents and grandparents was to stay active and to keep moving. You are an inspiration. I run daily. Reading about your classes have almost inspired me to sign up for an exercise class. Almost.

    gorgeous pictures Claire and homemade......

Other than my evening walk with DH, not sure if I went anywhere today other than the grocery store - and have to go again tomorrow. Baked cookies - mandel bread and snickerdoodle - didn't like the way the snickerdoodle came out (the same as last time) so I googled Betty Croker recipe and they are like they should be. DD asked me to bake her cookies. So my back is sore tonight!!! Bill paying and end of the year donations and tidying up in the house. Tomorrow more stuff in the house.....

Sinuses are still bothering me - using saline nasal spray, flonase and "musinex"...trying to avoid acetomenaphin . Can't take Nasids anymore due to kidneys......

    Sweet dream...will check in tomorrow

I disagree on the clothesline. I miss mine which I used to use most of the year when I lived back East. I found it less work than using the dryer as sheets, etc. were much easier to fold. Plus, socks and shirts last longer. I still hang small items suspended from one of my bicycle wheels on my deck. Or let them dry on top of the washer and dryer. Most of my clothes don't fare will in the dryer.

One of the ways I add movement is to walk around the block once or twice when waiting for the bus. It works better than standing and fuming. Between my run, shopping for the rack of lamb, and my trip into Seattle, I covered 7.5 miles today.

I look at it as "reverse engineering" exercise back into our lives. I could have driven into Seattle and walked one-half block from parking garage to the Burlesque Nutcracker. Instead, I bussed in from Redmond, walked to Pike Place Market to get green (yes really!) eggs, freshly dug local carrots (I want to support this year-round enterprise), and a Romanesco broccoli. I carried those to the theatre.

Show was fabulous with a live swing band. Basically a cross between a musical and a revue, but with the added twist of clothing being artfully removed. The dance is actually very serious, and the majority of performers are classically-trained ballet dancers. I have seen one of them perform with Seattle Opera, in a classical male role. The costumes were just dazzling.

I got in plenty of exercise mixing up the Christmas Puddings a week ago. However, I will say that I don't get in much exercise making bread these days. The machine does the work, once I load in the ingredients. I will also say that I recently noticed that frozen veggies require a lot less effort than fresh. However, it's the Romanesco broccoli and carrots I will be roasting to have with the rack of lamb that I snagged today. I also want to make Potatoes Anna which will require that I get out the mandoline. So a bit of chopping.

A very simple dinner for Christmas, though very festive. If I had company, I would be making a tomato or parsnip soup as a starter, but I think I will skip this step. Ending will be a good helping of pudding and hard sauce. So delish. I plan to work it off in advance with a day of skiing.

I think the moral is that if you want to eat sensibly, you need to get moving. I don't want to be counting every bite that I put into my mouth. I do want to say, "oh, what delicious carrots" and then buy 3 pounds for roasting, as I did today. A life that is rooted in abundance, not deprivation. As I mentioned to one of the Priests in my former church, one of the things I have learned is that as a society, we eat far too much, but don't feast nearly enough.

    Happy feasting!!! - Claire

image . Mischa is 10 years today. We rescued her 7 years ago yesterday, the day before her 3rd birthday....She is totally a "velcro" dog....wants to be where ever we are, espeically DH. She's small for a St. Bernard, but she weighs more than me!!!!

So true.claire, about the feasting. The flip side is we also don't do enough fasting. We evolved to do both.

White on white today so no skiing. Will go out to get myself new ski pants to replace my 25 year old ones. Will take a bus which is free for the winter, yay! I did all my cooking and entertaining the past two weeks so we can relax tonight.

Salsa, great pic. I have to try out fat biking as well.

TH, slow progression back to health in 11 days sounds feasible. You go, girl!

Karen, hope the back and sinuses resolve soon. My neck got so much better after DD did s fascia/skin rolling massage on me.

    Happy holidays!!

The ski pics make me envious! Love the mountains - very serene and peaceful settings.

Today will walk or do a class at the gym, then to work briefly, back home cooking and cleaning and will attend church service at 11PM. We may get a dusting of snow - do so love a white Christmas. Heidi - your picture looks so beautiful!

Claire, you're feasting plans sound lovely. TwoHobbies - my team came through, though just barely.

Wishing you all peace and joy this holiday season! Have to figure out how to post pictures - it is so neat to view see others.

Heidi, your picture looks like a post card, gorgeous!

Mickey, do you take pictures on your phone? I do, so when I want to share a photo; I come to BCO on the phone, click the little icon with mountains on it on the top bar where I'm a typing a post, then I can choose the file I want, pick the picture & done. Otherwise, you can download your picture to your computer, click the same mountain icon and pick a picture that way,

Claire, I love food (I droll when reading your meal descriptions). I HAVE to exercise; because I am, for sure, not going to exist on kale (although I have nothing against kale )

We will go to a candlelight church service at 3:30 and are having some good family friends over for turkey and all the trimmings tonight (a tradition we've done for many years now). Tomorrow my brother & some of his family will be rolling in for a couple days. In between my getting all the food in the oven/fridge/on the table etc. I plan to do a little toning & take the grand-dog for a probably short (because it is really cold) walk.

Happy Birthday to Mischa. What a sweetheart!

May your day be Merry and Bright!

It's actually pretty nice out so Stella and I took a long walk. DS volunteered to be the one to close everything up at his work, so she is hanging with me so he can work through lunch and hopefully get out of there at a decent time. Grand-dog #2 actually belongs to DS's roommate and is in South Dakota for the holidays. Stella will now take a nap and I will make stuffing.

Hello all and Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! Happy holidays to all!

My son is here so with his encouragement I got my full 30 minutes walk. It's pretty decent weather, cool and dry, so that helped. Need to get back into my daily routine. So tired.

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

    Happy Holidays.

Claire I like your thoughts on feasting. Tomorrow evening I think I'm going to kick back and feast on a variety of cheeses. That is my weakness. I drove to Naples today and spent the day with my family. They're having Noche Bueno tonight and tomorrow will be Christmas dinner. I had to get back to Miami because I have a sick puppy. Pet sitting for seven dogs and three cats run almost $300 a day. I'm also pet sitting for a friend's dog while she is in the hospital. Of course the second day of pet sitting she develops severe diarrhea and I had to take her to the animal hospital. So she requires medications every 6 hours. She is doing better. Her mom should be home from the hospital within the next few days.

Merry Christmas, everyone. I am up early drinking coffee and enjoying the Christmas lights while the family sleeps. Despite a late night Christmas Eve celebration, my body still wakes up at 5 something, my normal workout time. We have no snow so I am living vicariously through everyone's snowy scenery pictures. Ah.

Karen no little lap dog for you. She would be fun to cuddle with.

Octo the walk with the luminaria sounds delightful.

Claire interesting thought about working out on equipment versus outdoors. I have read it is better, and the used running as an example. Running outdoors you have to adjust for the curb, the rock in your path, and this improves balance and burns more calories. I personally believe we were meant to be in nature and sunshine.

Good point about every day movement, Ruth. Having a desk job, I feel my everyday movement is probably not sufficient. I do my own lawn mowing and gardening for that reason whereas everyone in my neighborhood has landscaping service. If I didnt hate cleaning I could use that as movement, too - LOL. My grandma used the heavy cast iron pans, cooked every meal, gardened, canned, milked the cow, churned butter, hung out the wash and also stood up working at the gas station they owned. Its inevitable our everyday activity will decrease more with technology in the house and every retailer delivering to your door.

Running is safer on a treadmill and indoor track but not near as much fun. Whenever pissible, I will choose nature. I slept late today. Now I'm headed to run 5 miles. It's a beautiful day.

Happy Christmas! Love all the photos and reading what we are all up to. Husband, son and I have had a relaxing day with kitchen tidied from turkey dinner with all trimmings, late this afternoon. Spoke to my sis in San Diego and DH family here. I'm on a borrowed laptop as mine packed it in and hoping to pick up a new one in the sales. Lying on the sofa watching tv, dog Roo next to me and also a day off tomorrow as it's Boxing Day. Have a terrific day everyone!

Got out for an 8-mile ski. Powered through the sneeziness, though didn't do the steep grades as icy. Conditions are what are known as "Cascade Concrete" and I can vouch for the texture as landed on my butt. Scenery was breathtaking. Onto making dinner with Christmas Pudding for desert. - Claire
