I am with Vivre on the warmer climate braggers!!!LOL Right now I am looking out the window at the newly falling snow and the 4-5 inch accumulation from about 10pm last night! Sat morning the birdies woke me up chirping. Spring has sprung, no grass has ris, wonder where the birdies is!
Oh well, must go get boy up to shovel the walk before he goes to work! My 'baby' turns 17 next week, man where did the time go!
Penny
ps to my very wise lady friend with the sun advice- the walk outside in the sun did help, hopefully I can do it again sometime soon! Thanks again.

Vivre, its been a stormy cold weekend here in "sunny California"...I am in a turtleneck and sweatshirt! May have to go to the mall to get out of the house for a bit and get a walk in. I have a treadmill, but that doesn't sound fun to me!! I like to get out and people watch.
My hubby works in the Bay Area (2 hr drive) and left early early this a.m. and won't be home til Thursday so it helps to be around others.
Geez, I had to buy a new swimsuit (boy are they expensive) and it took some doing to find one to adequately cover my scar!! We're headed to Maui beginning of May and that's my motivation for getting in shape and gaining some more strength!!!
Just curious, I don't know much about the Vit. D thing...I take a women's multi and a calcium pill and the dietician looked at my supplements and said that was good. Should I be investigating other supplements?? I will be getting my blood work done before my Avastin infusion this week.
Happy Sunday all!
-
Virve, it's sunny again here and beautiful with spring flowers, WOOPS!!! (LOL) Sorry!!!! I could not resist! I think I am feeling a bit of a stinker today!!! lol. My daughter has her eye on going to Chicago for graduate school, some program she is hot on. I can't imagine this GRITS (girl raised in the south) in Chicago for the winter!!! ack!!! I was born and raised in NJ so I have a bit of an idea about what you're feeling now. Also lived in New England (CT) for 5 years and the spring could not come fast enough!!! I'll try to tone it down.. hehe. You will have your day when we're broiling here and you are enjoying a lovely summer! lol.
My Vit D on last check was 53.9 I am thinking that is okay. I am currently at 4000 and thinking of staying there? Any thoughts on this. It says "normal" and I believe this is about mid-range?
OK, yesterday walked our long route, about 3.9 miles in about 75 minutes. Believe we're going to do teh same today. I hope to bring my 3lb weight!!!
Springie
-
Springtime, you GO GIRL!! you can walk far! Can't wait to get there too.
I lived in N.C. for 7.5 years (1st husband in the Army) and Oklahoma for 5 yrs (brrrr in winter...hot hot in summer). I get cold really easy and have a tough time warming up (except for the hot flashes I now get at times) so I'm glad to be back in Calif, although it gets cold here for me too! ok...I've got to find a mild climate! haha
I haven't started doing weights yet or my push ups. I'm scared about developing lymphedema...any thoughts?
-
Pk, now I don't feel so bad-at least our snow has been gone for a month now, but I should not speak too soon-we never know around here when things will change.
Kari-You California WHIMP! Just because it is not 75, it does not mean you cannot go outside! I walked this winter when it was 0- It is called layering! Love that cold fresh air. I hate summer! We actually have a nice day today, around 60. We took a long walk in the forest preserves, no jackets required. About the lymphedema-get yourself to a good chiropractor. I found a great Chinese guy who is a pain guru. His therapist treated my scars with ultrasound and deep tissue massage. It was really painful at first, but she really broke up the tissue and the soreness under my arm went away, and the hard knot by my breast scar softened. I had only 2 nodes, so nothing like you dealt with, but still worth a try. Also try the mini tramp or rebounder. It is the best thing for moving the lymph. Do it 20 minutes everyday. Take it very slowly with the weights. Build it up gradually. It is going to take a while. An I know what you mean about the bathing suit issue. I am thinking the hell with it, people can just see my battle scar and then I can give them my lecture on taking care of their health. I love to annoy everyone with my public service speech! We are thinking of going to HI too. Any suggestions?
As far as the Vit D. It is really important that you know your D3 numbers, just like your cholesterol. It is shown that low Vit D is a precusor to all kinds of disease. It should at least be 45, my doc feels that 70 is safer.
Springie, if your daughter comes to the big city, I will keep an eye on her for you, and tell her how to survive. What school is she looking at?
Go out and enjoy the sunshine today everyone-if you have it. If not, HAHA!
-
Vivre, you are funny! I am such a WHIMP!!! haha I'm the only cold person around, it really bugs me! I have all sorts of layers on and I still shiver if its not 70 degrees at least! haha They would laugh at me in the chemo room this winter, gloves, sweater, coat, etc....and they would still have to put warm blankets on me, geez...
I will definitely ask about my D numbers, my cholesterol has always been low so no worries there. I do see a good chiropractor, his brother is battling pancreatic cancer currently. I will be careful with the weights. What is a rebounder??
Ok, getting out now, the sun is actually out now! YIPPEE!!!!!

Hi Ladies
I am always so happy to read this thread. Lots of helpful hints and no drama.
I just got my Vit. D checked and the docs office left a message that it was "normal' but i don't know the number. My bone density test came back on the low normal side so I have been doing the Vit D./Calcium combo and trying to stop soda. I am a diet coke addict so cutting down to one per day is all i can do. I can't do Vit. D outdoors because of my melanoma dx. What's a girl to do?
kfinnigan, I went to a PT that specializes in lympedema and she gave me some guidelines for starting to lift weights. The only problem is that they were general guidelines for everyone of every age with no specifications for people who were in better or worse shape to start with. So I started slow with low weight and high repetition. I am over two years out now and am back at the gym lifting. I didn't have as many nodes as you taken but I have read that it doesn't really matter how many you have taken, it is what happens with the ones you have left. The theory is that the lymph will re-route if the system is used and is given an opportunity to re-route itself. There is actually no real evidence-based medicine available that supports the current lymphedema precautions. The recommendations are made on what people have felt "may have been contributers" to their lymphedema. For example one of the precautions is to avoid "bug bites" but obviously that is not always easy to do. But some people are bitten all the time without problem and others may have a reaction.
Vivre, I am going to try to be gentle with this information you may want to skip this paragraph and I am whispering now: it is really nice out today. I went on two walks with my dog at the local park that has a 3 mile trail. I did a total of 9 miles today. And I went to the gym and did weights.
Take Care!
-
PT you go girl! 9 miles!!! You are our Iron Woman! We did a little less than 4 in about 63 minutes today. My husband asked if we should add a new side street, but I thought not right now. Still getting used to the hour longers! We go at a good clip.
I am also wondering about arm lymphodemia KFin. I am working with light weights at home. Like PT said, light but repetitions. I also just started up Yoga again and was told to be careful initially. The key, I think it not to stimulate a "lymphatic reaction" - this I think would be caused by (say) too many sudden push ups, pull ups. I think it is the "sudden" in nature. However, my PT's told me that it is important to have good arm and upper body strength now so every day tasks, like taking in groceries, carrying things, etc, do not cause a "shock" to the system and give this lympatic reaction.
So my idea is same as PT states... go slow, but steady. Build it up. I think it may not be wise to overdo with massive all of a sudden weights now... My thoughts!
(( I am whispering too, now, and it was very lovely today and I potted some little herbs and a flower thing on the back deck after my walk))
Spring.
-
Weather sucks here today. Soooooo coooold, wet and nasty. Can't stand to go outside.
((Pssst......weather is great here too. Cleaned out raised beds getting ready for planting in a month. I've never seen such a beautiful blue sky.))
-
Speaking of weather -- it's very windy here today. In fact, if any of you are watching the tennis tournament finals today from Indian Wells, that's my neighborhood, you can see how windy it is. As far as it being warm here now, we'll start paying for our mild winters shortly. Summer temps here are normally in the 108-115 range, and our A/C bills are astronomical. So, I can't help but be exhuberant about the gorgeous weather we're having this month because I know it's short-lived.
Gotta run -- DH wants me to go somewhere with him -- more later -- Deanna
-
Well, all I can say is thanks guys for all the weather support! The snow has stopped now, about a foot fell and melting is already starting, yup melting already. In Calgary, not a word of a lie, we can have sun, rain and snow all in one day. Our motto is "if you don't like the weather, wait an hour. it'll change!"
PT, Vivre, Springtime- we are going to kick you out of the group if you continue to show us all up!!! LOL.
Personally, am having another bad weekend as far a exercising , so will just take the weekend off and start over tomorrow. I received bad news about my Aunt Friday and am unable to shake it off yet. Some of you from Rads group may remember my 77yr old Aunt 10+yr BC survivor and diabetic was hospitalized awhile back after she broke her arm leaning on a railing, she then had renal failure. Recently they discovered a fracture in her spine and had an MRI done, she has mets. I always assumed since she didn't have chemo way back that she had a non invasive ca like me, I was wrong. She did have invasive but was told since at that time she was over 65 that they did not offer chemo to pt's of that age. I don't even know what to say, I cannot believe that they told her that and that she followed that advice. At that time , her daughter was dying of a brain tumor secondary to her lung ca and it is possible that my aunt just couldn't deal with it all, not sure. It just seems like people around me lately are passing away or having recurrances, it has me in a funk.
Anyway thanks for listening.
Penny
PS this weekend, hubby booked flights to Maui for July, DS wants to learn to surf! My little ray of sunshine this weekend!
-
May I come whispering in here, just for a moment? (It's been in the 90s this week, which must sound like heaven to some, but it's waaaay to hot for me!) Actually wanted to whisper about lymphedema risk and exercise. Good news: there IS evidence-based research that shows exercise is good for both preventing and managing lymphedema.
But it is also possible to trigger it with overexertion, particularly repetitious movements or those you are unaccustomed to.
Even better, there is also evidence that very early lymphedema can in many cases be detected by women themselves before it is detectable or measurable by other means. So the recommendation is that as you build up (slowly! and even more slowly if it's an activity you weren't doing before treatment) you pay attention to your arm (and chest/breast on that side as well). If you notice any feelings of achiness, tiredness, tingling, numbness, heaviness, or anything just plain "different," stop at once and elevate your arm. You can go back to that activity later, just go slower and keep on paying attention.
A referral to a well-trained lymphedema therapist for baseline arm measurements and some personalized tips on risk reduction is a really good idea too. You can have her/him measure you for a compression glove and sleeve to wear prophylactically when exercising, traveling, or doing any unusual activities.
Here's a page about finding a well-qualified lymphedema therapist near you:
http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Finding_a_Qualified_Lymphedema_Therapist.htm
And here are the Position Papers from the National Lymphedema Network on Exercise, Risk Reduction, Air Travel, and Therapist Training:
Hope that helps, and hope none of you ever joins our "swell" sorority!
Be well,
Binney -
kfinnigan,
I will come to your aid here. I went to see my sister in Vacaville, CA one summer and had an electric blanket on in August. I was freezing. We also went to San Fransico and I wish I'd had a winter coat! So, I can attest to being cold in California -even when no one else is! I am from upstate NY so you would think I'd be use to cold but I never will be.
As for the rest of you weather braggers - I woke up to snow this morning! Not much but enough to still be on the cars. So plant your flowers as I layer up and put on my winter jacket!
-
Hey Gals!
Just wanted to pop in and say hello! Not much in the way of exercise for me today! I feel like a slug when I can't get my exercise in! LOL My 18 year old daughter tells me, "If somebody told me to sit on my butt all day, I wouldn't complain!"
I hate what the anesthesia and antibiotics do to me...I look like I'm about 6 months pregnant! I can't wait to get this stuff out of my system!
The sun was shining here today...only made it into the 50's, but I'll take that! Friday when we got up to head to Cleveland for the surgery we had snow on the ground. I'm so over winter. I grew up in Michigan and went to college in the U.P. and now live in the snow belt of NW Pennsylvania. What was I thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait for summer!!!!!!!!!
Have a great night everybody!
-
Penny
If I am kicked out.... it will probably be for my inability to resist the siren call of the carbs at the party on saturday night. That is why I had to do the double duty with the dog walking! lol I have two friends on weight watchers and they are trying to do walks as part of their program. They each called me seperately on Sun. Since I had such guilt I had to go both times!!!
-
Penny, sorry about your Aunt. Sort of makes me mad that what, 65 is too old for chemo? cut me a bleepin' break. grrrrrrrrrr. I am sorry. Maybe think today of taking walk to honor your aunt? I was taking walks for a friend on another list who was hospitalized due to really bad asthma and lung issues. I'd breath in and out and think of "easy breathing" for her!!!
Daffodils popping today. I have the latest daffodils in the neighborhood. (whispering this!)
Springtime.
-
PT-I am the same, I over indulge on the weekends so I think all the exercising I do during the week just takes care of that, that is why the weight is not coming off!
Springtime-thank you. We are all devastated by this news about Aunt P, my mom is taking this especially hard as it is just the two of them left.
Well very sunny today, but cold! The sun reflecting off of the foot of snow is beautiful, probably not as beautiful as those daffodils but what can one do. We are expecting more snow Wed. Wed night is my ds "birthday" celebration with 5 others, (16-17yr olds) they are going to have an x-box gaming nite. 6 boys, more snow, just shoot me now!!!
Have a great day all.
Penny
-
Penny-I know what you mean about the beauty of snow, but it is time for daffodils. Of course Ms springy could not resist letting us know that hers are blooming already, while we still have a while to wait, but I guess we can forgive her for rubbing it in. At least some people are enjoying spring! Sorry to hear about your aunt. I lost mine a couple of years ago to heart disease. She never took care of herself. She died at 60. I still wish I could have encourage her to better health like she encouraged me to go to college. Also, we will forgive you for falling off the wagon on the weekend, just don't make it a habit! Once spring comes, you will probably feel that renewed spirit and be more diligent.
Dani-have you ever had your thyroid and progesterone levels checked? Being cold is a symptom of low thyroid and low progesterone, both precursores to bc, and both tied to each other. I am waiting on the results of a test for my hormone levels and I know my thyroid levels are low. My hands and feet are always cold. When I get the results, I will let you know what my doctor says I should do about it.
Have a great day all-even if you warmer that the rest of us!
-
Hello Ladies! I hope everyone had a great weekend and better weather. It is cloudy here right now but is supposed to rain later today and every day except Thursday this week. I am ready for warmer and sunny weather for sure.
Penny, I am sorry about your aunt. 65 is not old at all. My aunt was offered chemo when she was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 78. She had to stop it when her liver started having problems but she is doing very well 7 years later. She goes to the dr and gets all the tests for colon cancer but she and both of her sisters (including my mom) have never had mammograms and they don't plan to. I keep reminding Mom every time I talk with her, but living in another country, I cannot drag her to get one.
Lisa, take things easy for a few days. You will know when you are ready. I took a short walk on day 3 from exchange and lift surgery, but it was a nice warm and sunny day in September.
Spring1, try kick boxing and Zumba is on my assignment book! I watched Zumba class while I was lifting weight on Friday. I need Lisa's help to keep up with the class or I would be a few steps behind everyone else.
I did my regular work out on Friday and Saturday, but took a day off yesterday. It was bad enough that I did not even walk, but I had coffee cake (baked from scratch, did not turn out well enough to give away due to power loss during baking, so I HAVE to eat it), biscuit (baked for my friend and had one with scrap piece) and carrot bar from my friend!!! No wonder my weight is up today. I love to bake but I give away my baked goods so I do not eat them. Biscuits and carrot bar are gone so I have less temptation at home. I am with you Penny. Lose weight during the week, then over-indulge on weekend. I will do my lunch hour walk and go to the gym after work today.
After I started working out, I am always hungry. I try to stay with fruits, veggies with fat free dip and air popped no-salt/butter popcorn, but I am eating far more than I used to. Does anyone else is having this problem?
Have a great day!
Spring2

Hey girls, just back from my last rads!!!! I was so happy, I broke down and cried in the car to the tune "Good Times...leave your cares behind..." I was smiling and crying at the stop light, oh brother! Everyone here at work was cheering for me when I walked in.
As far as being cold in Calif. Hemingway wrote "One of the coldest winters spent was a summer in San Francisco".
Dani/Diane, I'm about 45 min. from Vacaville!
I've had my thyroid checked and all levels are normal. I also suffer from Raynaud's so if I get too cold my fingers lose the blood and turn white, its gross. People always tell me I get cold cause I'm too thin, but I don't believe that.
Penny, sorry to hear about your Aunt. Glad you can look forward to Maui!
Lisa (snow bunny), hope you're healing quick!
Deanna, we take an annual trip to Palm Springs for my birthday, but this year our Maui trip is during that time. We are still trying to figure out if we can make it, cause if you wait too long, its too DARN HOT! How do you stand the summers down there? YIKES
Did get to the book store and got some good info on Yoga, so went home yesterday after my walk at the mall (40 minutes, but boy my legs got weak)...and did some poses. I was wondering about the lymphedema thing as I did downward dog, etc. But didn't notice anything in my arm afterwards. I didn't push it though, did about 10-15 min. I could breathe so much better after that!
Cold, in the 50's and the wind is a blowin' today!!!!!!! but the sun is shining
-
Kari- "Cold, in the 50's" LOL! As I said you CA gals are whimps! But many congrats for getting out of the frybaby! That is one "hot spot" I hope we never visit again!
Spring, any kind of aerobic exercise always makes me hungry. Surprisingly, weight training and pilates does not. Can't figure out why. Try popping the popcorn with the grapeseed oil, nice flavor. Also while at Whole Foods one day, they were serving samples of popcorn popped in the Carlson's brand of omega 3, lemon flavored fish oil. It surprising had a really good flavor.
I also forgot to mention, if you are still recovering from surgery and want to do some weight training. Try using low weights and doing each set very very slowly. Count slowly as you extend and work the triceps, count slowly as you flex and work the biceps and hold in between. You will be surprised how much you can work up a sweat this way. By doing them very slowly, s in slo-motion you actually work the muscle harder because of the resistance, but you do have the jerking which could overstress the muscles.
-
Well I just got home from Zumba class. My daughter did a great job teaching and I just did some squats and stepping. Nothing that would jostle the girls! LOL Felt good just to get out and move!
Getting my drains out tomorrow! Woohooooooo
-
Vivre, you crack me up! I couldn't survive Chicago...that's where you are right? I would have to visit when the weather was nice. I've always wanted to go there. Kudos to you girlfriend gettin out there in the real cold!!
Lisa, you are an inspiration! I want to try this Zumba thing someday!
-
Lisa, you go girl!
Spring2, Good for you girl!!!!
I walked about 4 miles yesterday WITH the 3lb weight, and was tired at the end!!! But we did it.
Gotta run, just reporting in!!!
Springtime

Hi, all ~ We had such a windstorm here over the weekend that I got out of my morning walking routine, instead opting for a shorter walk (a little over 2 miles) later in the day. And, surprisingly, for now at least, I don't feel quite as achy as I had. Also, although I'm not heavy, my weight had been climbing a bit, which was very frustrating with all that walking I felt like I was doing. Now, just since changing my routine, I've dropped 1.5 lbs. I'm not sure what's going on -- it could just be coincidence -- but I think I'll continue the shorter, evening walks this week, and maybe add some stretching or at-home yoga in the a.m.
Kari ~ I'm with you on the cold! Living where we do, after living in Aspen, Steamboat, Vail & Park City for many years, I'm no stranger to cold & snow. But I have to chuckle at the difference in dress here in the winter -- locals bundled up in layers ending with sweatshirts, sweaters or jackets, while visitors from Canada, Minnesota, Montana and such are in their shorts and tank tops! Obviously, 70 degrees is all relative depending on what you're used to!
Kari, I also wanted to comment on your question about supplements. Personally, I take a lot more than you do and always have. Of course, everyone is individual, so you have to do what you feel is right for your body and lifestyle. However, I think that no matter how well we eat, it's extremely difficult -- if not impossible -- to get all the nutritients we need from our foods due to the technology now used to grow & process them. The nutritionist @ UCLA also recommends several supplements for those of us who have had bc. If you're interested, I can direct you to an on-line video from UCLA on the subject of nutrition & bc. Just PM me and I'll tell you how to find it. Deanna

Great article supporting what we already know to be true!

Okay so don't drink alcohol and get thin, stay thin, and keep moving moving moving.
- Women who had the lowest BMI and the highest physical activity levels had the lowest levels of circulating estrogen; hormones that can fuel breast-cancer growth.
Lisa it is GOOD to see it AGAIN!!! I just realized I have my first colonoscopy next months and maybe those "colonics" will help me lose more weight. LOL.
Springtime.
-
Reporting in for today's activity!!
- Walked the 3.85 in about 67 minutes and no 3lb weight today. It was so much easier without the weight!!! LOL.
Lisa, how are you feeling today? Any jiggling yet?? lol.
Springtime.
-
Woohoo...I'm now drain free!!! I feel great. Haven't tested the jiggly factor yet! LOL My PS said no vigorous exercise for a week...so I'll have to get back to you on the jigglin'!
Looking forward to Zumba tonight.....at least my legs are still getting a workout...just no bouncing!
The sun is shining today and it got up to the mid 50's!
-
Deanna, I love your images of people's different clothing in the winter! It sure makes me feel better! I'm interested to see the video you mentioned, I PM'd you...
Lisa, Congrats on the drains coming out! Woohoo!!! Glad the sun is shining and you can make it to Zumba to shake those legs!!
Springtime, you're a walking machine girl!!
You girls are always an inspiration to me. I was really tired yesterday after work, but darn it, I thought of this thread and all of you and I got my butt out there for 30 min. and felt so good afterward!!!
