Anyone starting chemo in Aug. 08?

Lashon - I just want to give you a (((HUG))). I can't believe that you have to deal with this sort of dx at 26! I think you're one of the youngest woman I've heard of to have bc. It must just seem even more surreal to you than it does to those of us who are older. But, as others have assured, tears are good. I even read somewhere that recent evidence shows that tears produced by emotional crying may be a way that the body disposes of toxic substances! Fascinating, huh? At any rate, it's very normal and necessary, no matter how much it might take us by surprise at times.
As far as forgetting what day it is, that could be a SE from one of more of things they give with the chemo. Be sure to keep a log of how you're feeling each day, then discuss it with your chemo nurses or onc. Maybe they can adjust your meds a bit the next time. I had assumed that sleeping and feeling like a zombie on Day 3 & 4 were part of the chemo until I read someone's comment here linking it to the Compazine. When I asked a nurse about it, she agreed, and said I could just use more Zofran next time instead. See how much we're learning by sharing?!
Feel better, Lashon... We're all here for you -- Deanna
-
Lashon, We are all here for you! If you want to talk PM me with a number I can call you on and we can talk whenever you feel up to it! And as far as food goes....I say treat yourseld! You sound like you could use a pick me up!
Am I the only one still eating takeout food? After Mass yesterday I drove my son to Arby's and had him go in and get us Arby's Roast Beef sandwiches with plenty of Arbys Sauce and it was so good! We brought them home to eat. The best thing I've eaten since my 1 st chemo on Aug 6th. I guess that medicine the onc gave me for thrush is working but water still tastes funny.
-
Hood - Went to an awesome mexican dinner last night after mass...it was soo good. Food is tasting better but water is still yucky, so my thrush must be getting better too. In other words, no you are not the only one eating take out food...I have been living on it!
Lashon - I agree with Hood go and treat yourself. I have been eating restaurant food quite a bit actually. It tastes better than anything I have at home. It may be a good pick me up!
Hey everyone...check out www.chemoangels.org maybe it is .com - chemobrain...You can register yourself and your family for a special angel who will send little notes and gifts to everyone in your family during the entire course of your treatment. My onco nurse said it is an amazing program. I registered last week and just received notice that my family was adopted by 2 angels. It will be great for my kids to get some extra attention during this time. Also, went shopping with hubby today and bought some great soft fitted baseball caps (no hole in back) at Lids. You can go to www.lids.com and design your own fitted cap and bucket hats. They are sooo cute and cover almost the entire back and sides of your head. I ordered a black one with silver embroidery that says.. no hair day! I also ordered a solid navy and a cute khaki bucket hat for the rest of the days at the pool.
All right, time to go. Headed to mass tonight so that I can enjoy the last quiet day tomorrow with not much to do. DH goes tomorrow to return with the 3 crazy heads who have been at their grandparents since last Saturday! Also going to go and try out how some chicken wings taste...it will stink to not eat the celery with it though!

Started chemo last Wednesday-(really scared) on Ac for 4 times followed by T for 4 every two weeks. Thursday was ok-got the nulasta shot. Friday was hellish and since I've felt like I have a tight elastic band around my forehead. The onco nurse said the meds could give you sinus problems-is that what people are taking claratin for? By the way I'm 43 with a 12 year old son.
-
Sallie - the claritin is for the bone pain caused by the neulasta shot. I too had the hellish headache and it lasted for about 4 days...also a side effect of the neulasta. So sorry you had to join our group! It is a great bunch of ladies and we are all here for eachother! Good Luck!

Nico - Stacy's t-shirt idea (Bald Hottie) had made me LOL when I read it, but if there are other Bald Hotties on these boards, maybe we should think about it more? Hair Challenged Hotties? Or maybe a slightly bi-lingual Sans Hair Hotties, as a nod to our 2 members who live in Europe? I'd also thought of Chemo Cowgirls and Chemo Commandos. Oh, well...just some more random ideas, and hopefully some others have some too. Mostly I think it should be something that makes us laugh.
And Stacy, I'm still with you on hoping to go the scarf and hat route. We live in the desert where summer temps are in the 108-115 range, which makes a wig sound miserably hot, at least for the next month or so. But I do have one picked out, just in case I decide I want to go that route later.
Sallie, welcome! Sorry we're "meeting" you here, but thanks for joining us.
Lashon - How're you doing today?
Deanna -
Been gone camping a couple days and look how many have joined us. Hope everyone is feeling well or with minimal side effects. My head had no pain or tingling, just day 14 the hair really started coming out in the shower. Today is day 17 for me, every time I brush it more comes out, but I had such THICK hair you couldn't tell I lost any if you didn't know me. I too plan on sticking with bandanas and caps. My husband was snoring so loud last night that I went and got in bed with my 8y/o. This morning he said, mom, you need to sleep with a dew rag (bandana) cuz I woke up with your hair all over me. Thursday I seen my oldest son who has already returned to college. He cried and sobbed when he saw me. I asked him what was wrong and he said he had dreamed that I had lost all my hair. I told him I AM going to loose all my hair, that I would rather be bald and alive, then dead with hair. He also has a fraternity brother who lost his mother to cancer last year (I have no idea what kind of cancer). He said I see his mom's picture on the wall every time I go over to his house and it makes me want to cry. What do you say? I don't think I'm going to die, but can I tell him I'm not? Only the good Lord knows that.

Hi all,
Just back from watching the Buskers downtown with my family. We all really enjoyed it. My cousin is one of the Aerial Angels and they are just amazing! You can check them out at www.angelsintheair.com
It boosted all of us to do something fun together today.
My lumpectomy breast is still reddened and sore but they advised me to wait to get it checked until tomorrow as I have no fever. I hope it's not infected as my 1st chemo is tomorrow and I want to get things over with. If it is, my chemo will be postponed until probably next week while I have another round of antibiotics (I already had an infection there post-op). When they removed my drain post-op it was still draining alot, but they pulled it as it had been two weeks and said they hoped it wouldn't infect. Oh well, not much I can do.
I'm so nervous about tomorrow I have had a hard time sleeping, as has my DH...even with a sleeping pill!
Welcome Sallie. I hope your head is feeling better soon.
Kim, sorry to hear that your son is having such a hard time...I know my little ones have gone through this too and they are much younger. He is really an adult and must be terrified to lose you, as he understands so much more. My 4yr old has come up to me often since my dx to say, "Mommy's going to die". It breaks my heart they have to cope with this. We met with a nurse who specializes in dealing with children who have a parent with a serious illness and she said to say, "The doctors don't think I'm going to die now, but if I get sicker and things change you all will be the first ones to know". That seems to have helped a bit.
Have a great night everyone.
Dawn

Hi Everyone,
Yes Lashon, both Stacy & Dawn are right... I have cried I think everyday since my dx. One minute I'm crying the next smiling. So do what you gotta do and let it out! I'm glad you were able to talk to your grandmother. You have family and friends that care ((( hugs))).
Well today is day 3 post tx and while I'm happy I'm not nauseated nor terribly fatigued, there are 2 SE's that are w/me: 1) These awful abdominal cramps and 2.)Wierd sodium taste. So far the water is helping w/the salty taste in my mouth but these cramps are killing me! Stool softeners and prunes have helped but ouch.
I like the nick name Stacy- "Bald Hotties". I'm not bald yet but will soon be by 8/27 or so.
Hubby bought me an awesome wig yesterday. This after my run in with the horrible wig lady @ the swapmeet. (My bargain hunter hubby had me check her out...horrible customer service!) The ladies at the wig store were incredible and I must have looked good because DH said "Trim it and let's take it!"
Hope everyone is having a good weekend.
Hugs & Prayers,
Jeannine

Hi ladies I have already had four rounds of AC chemo. And now I am to have 4 rounds of Taxol I am a bit nervous about it. Mainly because it is the unknown. I know what the AC is like I have already had it so I know what to expect. I really feel for you women that still have young children to take care of. Because I know you will want to put on a happy face for them even if you don't feel it. I am thankful our children are grown and out of the house one blessing I thank God for. My prayers are with each of you as some of you are just starting chemo. It is all like a blur at times it seems it all happened so quickly! First the biopsy surgery then the cancer surgery then I had a port put in and then boom your in chemo. Most of the time I feel real positive about it. But at times after a few days feeling bad I do get down and just feel like having a pity party hey as if that will help me. No it won't and I know that so instead I pray and change my attitude. And thankfully I have a very tolerant husband of all my great moods. One thing I will add ladies the chemo sometimes will cause diarrhea or constipation. And you won't know which for you until you have it. So it is a good idea to have stuff on hand for both to treat it if you have to. My Oncologist seems to feel its best to be aggressive in the treatment so the chance of recurrence is less. I hope he is right since I am the one going through it! Well take care all of you and think positive. Remember you are your own best advocate. If you have questions about something then voice them. Well I will let you all know how it goes after having the Taxol. Roya your treatment and mine are the same. My hair is already gone and yes ladies I miss it
and I hate wigs. For me they are just to HOT!!! I live in TN. and its hot down here and humid. So I mostly wear hats. I only wear the wigs for something special like church a wedding well you get the picture. I am also use to working and now I am home all the time and it gets a bit old at times. I am a flight attendant and the FAA doesn't allow you to fly on chemo you have to be 100% which of course I am not. My disability just recently turned over to long term. But I am using the time to quilt more on the days I feel good as I had just started quilting a year ago. Well bye for now all.
Prayers To All Dana

Hello ladies. Stacy I hope your counts are great. To all the new ladies on here WELCOME. I am sorry you have to be here but these ladies are great. I have lost count of who all has tx this week. I go for #2 of EC tomorrow. Is anyone else on the AC or EC dose dense? I hope my counts are good and we are good to go. It will be nice to be halfway through this cycle anyway. Hope it goes as good as the last one. At least not worse.
Jeannine, I had horrible stomach cramps for 3 days. I ended up going back to the onc. They gave me a medication called levsin because they thought that the chemo was causing my Irritable Bowel Syndrome to act up. It has been a life saver. If you don't get some relief you may want to ask about it. Its an anti-spasmodic and helps calm the stomach down. I couldn't even drink anything without bloating and cramping. I didn't eat for 2 days just to get through the weekend to see the doctor. I won't do that again. It was rough. I hope you get some relief and feel better soon. Good luck to anyone else having tx this week. I know there were a few of us that started the same day but some of you are every 3 weeks and I am every 2 weeks so I am a little confused as to who is when. Thinking about you all. God Bless.
Tonya

Hi everyone!
Well, just got back from the onco and it went great! All counts were good and he counldn't feel a defined tumor anymore!!!! WoooHOOOO!!! As a result, he is changing my steroid dose to 2 days instead of 4 (SLEEP is good!) and decreasing my Neulasta dosage in hopes that I won't have as much bone pain! GREAT DAY!! Tx #2 next Wed., 8/27. Oh and he said this means if all continues to go as well, I will only need the TAC x 4 and not 5 or 6!
I hope everyone has as good of a day as I am!

Great advice Stacy & Dawn, The tears do come out of nowhere. One minute you are fine and the next you're crying and angry. It's all normal and what I've found is if you just give yourself permission to feel all this it passes quicker.
Start tx tomorrow and I called the onc office this morning to find out what I needed to do, I didn't have any instructions. She was a little snippy and seems put out that I needed more information. Oh boy.........that's all it took. You can keep it in and be strong and then the slightest thing breaks the damn. But she called me back with all the info and was very sweet and I'm fine now.
Lashon, Just keep reaching out to family and friends and don't be too hard on yourself. Read Rom. 8:28, and I'll be praying for you specifically.
Halpino, You have really been on my mind and prayers. I've prayed that God would rain down His mercy on you and give you strength with the kids and work. Bless your soul!!
Had a great weekend in SanAntonio with my DH and DS. Last fun weekend before school starts for DS and tx starts for me.
Have a blessed day ladies.........peaches

Good Evening Girls,
Stacy-AWESOME news!! Wouldn't that be great to only have 4 tx!! I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I just finished day 19-feeling great!! Went to school/work for the first day today and wore the wig. Could not believe how many comments I got about great hair!! I just had to smile each time. That is the beauty of me having off the summer and not seeing anyone until today. I am so glad I kept quiet at work-only the administration and one good friend knows. I actually felt normal today. I am hoping to get through TX2 on Thursday so I can say I am halfway there!! My hair is coming out in more strands now, but still cannot part with it-will do it soon. Girls who are anxious about wigs-don't be!! My parents were thrilled with my new look. My mom said she would be surprised if I didn't keep it for many years!
Welcome to all the new friends!! I Iook forward to meeting new girls here each night and hope the "veterans" are doing well!!

My hair continues to come out, today is day 18. I'm not parting with mine yet either. DH says he will buzz it when I am ready!

Hi All,
Welcome Denise, Dawn, Bette, Lashon, Quinda and all our newest sisters. Dana I enjoyed your post and appreciate the advice.
dlb823, a while back you wrote that 2 lesions had been found after your lumpectomy. May I ask whatever happened about that?
Tanya, thank you for the info about not eating fresh fruits & veggies, not eating out too much etc. If, my chemo teacher told me that, I must have been asleep while she was telling me.
JDPeaches, regarding asking what to know what to do about treatment tomorrow, I can honestly say that I have gathered all the most important info right here on this thread. There is such an amazing amount of support and knowledge right here.
Nursekim, my children also have friends who have lost their moms to cancer. It does affect their reactions to our diagnosis. I let my daughter see a psychologist. My son seems to be dealing with it, but appearances can be deceiving. They still aren't communicating with me as to their true inner feelings about my diagnosis. I can tell. I understand what you are going through with your son.
Halpino, hope your treatment went well today.
I am getting along better. No nausea since last Tuesday. Busy helping my kids shop for school and so far able to maintain our daily routine. I'm grateful for that!
-
Has anyone had a problem getting a blood draw from their port? I went for second appt. for bloodwork and the nurse could not get blood and had to use a vein. Hopefully it will be ok for tx on Wednesday of next week.
-
Well, my breast was not infected after all...just some inflammation so I had my first chemo today. It went ok. DH and I ate some early supper during the tx and I felt fine.
mommomjuju: My port did not work well initially when the nurse tried to access it, but she had me lift my arm up and change position and then it worked just fine. She said people have issues with them all the time and if they couldn't get it to work then they'd send me for a special test to check it. Did they suggest this to you? I hope it works for you next time.
My only symptoms seem to be very tired and some stomach cramps and nausea. My sister lives five houses away and came over tonight to help DH get me and the four kids settled. She's such a godsend. I'm taking all the nausea meds I've been offered and hope to sleep well tonight.
Roya, so glad your nausea is easing!
Misty, Nico and Stacy glad you're feeling well today.
Kim, I agree and will hold on to the hair until it really needs to come off. It's so short now anyway!
Peaches, thanks for the prayers and thoughts. I hope all goes well for you tomorrow. I didn't receive much of any plan prior to tx today and we asked the nurse to explain it all as she went along which helped alot. Make sure you've got your chemo bag packed with all the items the others have suggested. I found I used everything in that bag so it was really helpful. I will pray for you tonight.
Tonya, thanks for the helpful advice on the stomach cramping you posted for Jeannine...I will use that info for myself as well if these cramps don't ease up. Jeannine I hope they are better for you soon.
Welcome quinda and Dana!
God bless everyone and I hope the SE overnight are minimal for all.
Dawn
-
Great news about your tx's, Stacy! You must be so relieved!
Peaches - Good luck tomorrow! Please know that I will be praying for you.
Hi, Dana & Quinda - Welcome to our group.
Dawn - Hope the cramps ease up. I had a bout of that w/nausea and vomiting last night (Day 12, go figure...), set off by fish tacos, I think...
Roya - Glad to see you're feeling better! To answer your question, I had a lumpectomy on 2/25, was told they got it early, and there was no node involvement. But when I went in for my first post-op a few days later, my surgeon totally blindsided me with the news that the final path had shown something very different - that there was bc in the sentinel node (the only one she'd taken & which had been called clear in the OR), and that the pathology of that node indicated cells inconsistent with the tumor they'd removed. So, she felt I probably had an occult (hidden) tumor, that I now needed a mastectomy and chemo. It was such a nightmare turn of events, I kept asking myself if maybe I'd been in a car wreck and was unconscious and dreaming all this!
Anyway, I went to UCLA for a second opinion, which got a bit dragged out because UCLA wanted a new MRI. The MRI I'd had a few weeks earlier hadn't found anything, but had also called a couple of areas "obscured." It was that 2nd MRI at UCLA that found the 2 additional lesions, and after an MRI-guided biopsy that found they were bc, UCLA recommended a mastectomy. After much soul-searching, I had a mastectomy w/Diep flap reconstruction on May 20.
I'm sharing more than a brief "I had a mastectomy" because I think there are some things to be learned from my experience. For example, no one had told me that the final pathology could be very different from what they tell you immediately after surgery. If I'd known that, it may not have been quite the shock it was.
Anyway, I think it all worked out for the best, even though it was extremely rough to go through at the time.
Deanna -
lashon, how are you doing today?? Do you mind telling me what state you live in?? My DH and I are praying for you.
-
Great news Stacy!!!! I am only scheduled for 4 rounds so I KNOW how excited you must be. Misty1 glad you are still going strong!! Lashon - we are all here for you - it is a very difficult journey but with support you will make it through. dlb823 I would have been HORRIFIED if I would have gotten news like you - on the bright side at least they caught it. I had a lumpectomy and didn't have any node involvement but had to go in for another one less than a month later because they didn't get it all and that was devestating enough. Hang in there girls - we are getting through this!!! I feel ok - still battling some bowel problems but I am working on it!!!! Still get tired so darn easy but hey at least I am here!!!!! My next round isn't till August 29th so I will pray for all of those before me!!!!!
-
Hair update...not shaving today! I still have a full head of hair and just loosing some strands here and there. I can't bring myself to shave it quite yet. But, I will! Also, have an interview this afternoon for a director position at an early childhood learning center that our church is opening this spring. They know my diagnosis, but it would be nice to go there with hair!
LASHON and MamaShift - everything ok with you 2? Haven't heard from you in awhile...Hope you are both doing ok.
Deanna - wow! What a story. I am sooo glad you pursued all of your avenues!
Dawn - glad to hear first Tx went as planned. Nobody wants this to last any longer than absolutely necessary! Give your kids lots of hugs!! They are adorable!
momomjuju - no problems with my port, EXCEPT, they won't use it for blood draws. Apparently, insurance won't pay for it unless it is drawn by an RN and the lab only has Techs. I broke down in tears as that was one of the main reasons that I went with the port. I have terrible times trying to draw blood or get an IV. My surgeon is going to be so mad!
Roya - glad to hear you are feeling better!
Misty - hope you have a great week back to school!!
My next Tx is 8/27!
Have a great day everyone!
Stacy

Hello,
I had my first round of Chemo on Aug 1st - going for round two this friday - more nervous about 2x, the 1st round went relatively well...much better after 1st week. My hair has already thrown it's "Bon Voyage" party - seemed as if every folicale stood up and waved bye - LOL Odd sensation. What part of "all" your hair did I not understand? hadn't given it much thought - seemed logical that it would start from the top down - not so. I love the bald look - yes, I said it - bald works for me. I just got back to work yesterday and damn near had a breakdown as I couldn't focus and the frustration of that upset me! I have really been trying to see this as an adventure - one that will end, but I want to make the ride as fun as possible. Love to you all!
-
Hi everyone,
Vision, You have great sense of humor. I needed a good laugh. My friend told me that all chemo patients must wear underwear...I said why...she said some one will ask what's that fuzz on your shoes. LOL. She knew that I go without most of the time. How funny.
Well I'm back home after first tx. Don't feel anything weird yet, I actually feel pretty good. I'm drinking lots of water and we'll see how it goes tonight. I've been praying for all of you every day.
Misty, so glad to hear that your back at work and things are going well. It's good to be back to normal. I'm sure you look precious in your wig.
love to all, peaches
-
Hey all,
So far on day 4 I'm still doing okay. No more cramps! Thx Nico & Tonya for the suggestions. I'm going to ask Dr. about the anti-spas meds. next time! Nico- that dinner your DH hubby made sounds delish.. I still have my appetite!
Stacy: Congrats on your great news! Happy to hear your counts are in good shape. Good luck on the interview too. Keep your hair as long as you can.
Deanna: Your story is incredible! I live in CA too but don't think my ins. covers UCLA since my group is elsewhere. Glad to hear they took care of you though. I've learned nothing is certain w/this darn disease.
Peaches: I'm glad to hear you're feeling good. Yes, drink, drink, drink that water and you'll be okay. Getting in the excercise has been a challenge for me though. I'm a couch potato and love Lifetime movies. Get rest and eat too. You cracked me up/that undie story! No fuzz on my shoes please
(I guess that means no thongs either?)
Welcome both Vision & Dana- Sorry to hear you can't fly Dana. I'm sure you'll be able to make a lot of beautiful quilts now.
I'm still holding on to my hair too girls. I can really picture our folicale's really saying "audios" to us. If we just didn't lose our hair this thing wouldn't be half bad. Oh well....
Have a good day ladies,
Hugs & Prayers,
Jeannine

Okay Girls,
Are you ready for a good laugh?! I went to the ACS's "Look Good, Feel Good" at a local center last night. I was there with three other BC ladies-two of them had to be around 70ish, the third one was around 50, and here I am at the ripe old age of 40. (This is no offense to any girls here who are older.) I kept saying to myself, what is wrong with this picture?! So, the two older ladies were a little hard of hearing. The cosmetologist had to basically "yell" as she was giving us directions on how to apply the make-up. I walked out of there with ringing in my ears!! I told this story to my friend at work today who knows about me, and she was in tears laughing!! You know, sometimes, you gotta have a good laugh and make lemonade from our sour lemons!! I would recommend this program to any of you-I got a big old bag of free make-up that was donated by various companies. I don't wear too much make-up, but it was still lovely to receive these goodies.
Good day at school again today-couple more comments about the lovely hair!! It sounds like some of us are pushing it with the hair-still haven't cut mine. I should have had a "pool" with my family about when all of it would go. Jeannine, you are so right about the hair being the worst part. Stacy, I'll keep my fingers crossed for your new job possibility. I'm telling you, the best thing I did was decide to go back to work(teaching.) Are your kids wearing sympathy scarves?!
Anyway, hope everyone got a laugh from my experience-I know we can always use one!! I'll check back in after TC round 2 on Thursday. Have a great night, girls!
~Misty
