I am so nervous I'll have to take a xanax before bed tonight.  Even though polls and talking heads pretty much agree that Obama will win, it's been taken from us before.  Fingers are crossed.

This is what Obama said today about his grandmother's passing:

No matter what happens tomorrow, I'm going to feel good about how it has turned out because all of you have created this remarkable campaign. She is gone home. And she died peacefully in her sleep, with my sister at her side. And so, there is great joy as well as tears. I'm not going to talk about it too long because it is hard, a little, to talk about.

I want everybody to know though a little bit about her. Her name was Madelyn Dunham. And she was born in Kansas in a small town in 1922. Which means she lived through the Great Depression, she lived through two world wars, she watched her husband go off to war, while she looked after her baby and worked on a bomber assembly line. When her husband came back they benefited from the GI bill, they moved west and eventually ended up in Hawaii.

She was somebody who was a very humble person, a very plainspoken person. She is one of those quiet heroes we have all across America, who are not famous, their names are not in the newspapers, but each and every day they work hard. They look after their families. They sacrifice for their children, and their grandchildren. They aren't seeking the limelight. All they try to do is do the right thing. And in this crowd, there are a lot of quiet heroes like that, people like that, mothers and fathers and grandparents who have worked hard and sacrificed all their lives and the satisfaction that they get is in seeing their children or maybe their grandchildren or their great-grandchildren live a better life than they did. That is what America is about. That is what we are fighting for.

I just heard from my cousin in Harrisburg, PA, that her son, who is a reporter for a TV station up in Erie, got to interview Obama in Pittsburgh.  I'll have to pump him for details after the election.  What a scoop for a 24-year-old, though.

    Laura -

Funny you mentioned TheresaPW.  I was thinking today after Obama's grandmother passed, that Theresa was probably there to give her a welcoming hug to the perfect hereafter!  I will raise a toast to both of them tomorrow night.

    24 hours to go....

Grace, I saw the Olbermann bit.  I hadn't thought of the McCain gaffes in that way, but he's right.  Obama knew that he was going to be held to a higher standard than most, that he would have to run a near perfect campaign just to get nominated.  It just makes his success that much more amazing.

Do you think that when Obama was talking about the "quiet heroes" in the crowd who aren't "seeking the limelight," he was thinking about Joe the Plumber?

I'm already feeling frustrated because I'm going to be stuck at the polling place until 9:30 PST tomorrow night.  I'll have to make some calls on my dinner break to see what's going on back east.

Go Obama!  I'm so lucky.  Our polling place is at our local grammar school  It's 1/2 block from me.  We are going to have a beautiful day here in Chicago.  Sunny and Spring like warm weather.  Before going to work, I'm gonna take a wonderful walk to the school and place my vote.  I want one of those stickers that says "I voted."

I feel like I am holding hands with every single on of you.

grace- what Olbermann did, with the help of the letterman staff was brilliant.

suz- you mean, the board that Palin hired and work at her will exonerated--- yeah that's like her husband exonerating him and means just about as much. LOL.

miamamama- I wore myself out yesterday and slept 7 hours. I can't wait for 12 hours from now. I'm so excited. Great to see you on this thread!

laura- that's awesome obama's gm's vote will count. I am so glad she was at least able to vote for her grandson.

I am so so so excited.

LAP- emailing you my phone number!

obama girls- we're keeping this thread going into his presidency. From the sounds of some repubs, we'll still need our special place!

BTW- the repubs are still paying for their hate ads this morning, even after the polls are open. Gotta love losing ugly amid the hope and prosperity that is on the way.

I have goosesbumbs on my arms and tears of hope in my eyes. Not since Bobby Kennedy (and I was only 11!) have I felt this way about a candidate and the prospect for a positive change in our country. Go, Barak, go--win it for us.

I haven't been this excited to get up and do something since I was a kid on Christmas morning...Nik, you crack me up with the perfect animotion! I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight...I think this is how some of our parents felt when JFK was nominated...it's such a priveledge to be a part of it...

    Yep, they're still at it....

Amy:  Apparently "republican" is a nasty word.....  Someone on the "other" thread said that they poste on our thread "once" and were called every nasty name in the book...  the only comment I saw was you referring to her as a person with liberatatrian/republican views....gotta love it.

Well, my vote is cast - got there 30mins before the polling place opened and there was already a line   There were only 2 machines and 1 broke down for more than 1/2 hour - but they finally got it fixed.  I can only imagine the voting issues that will occur today!  I can't wait to see the election returns coming in tonight......I've been a little nervous about the results but I think all the name calling and nastiness from the other side will backfire.

And while we're on that issue - they forgot to throw "pinko" in front of communist.  The Reps used to scream "bleeding heart, pinko-communist liberal" back in the 60's and 70's.  And gee, all the Dems who DID get into office and we're still not a communist country?  Don't you think they'd realize how ridiculous it sounds to say that Obama will single-handily take our country from democracy to communism or socialism?  I only hope that people can put all the hate that emanated from M/P's campaign (Rove's handiwork) behind us and work together to get back on track.

My niece is 19 - this is the first time she gets to cast a vote and she has been a staunch Obama supporter ever since he threw his hat into the ring.  I'm so happy that she gets to partake in this historic election - her excitement is so wonderful to see.  When is the last time we've seen so many young people so excited and wanting to be part of this process?  I was only 12 when JFK ran but I remember the electricity surrounding him.......now we have it again in Obama.

I just got back from voting as well.....my husband and son came with me and my daughter will vote tonight after work.  I always feel sooooo good after voting.  There was a bit of a line today here as well, which was a little surprising as we live in a relatively small community. There was a young man voting today for the first time and he was sooo excited.  The pride in his face was really something to see.

Well water....I remember the pinko commie comments from that time as well....didn't work then either....

Ok, so now the wait begins.....

I think we need to reclaim pinko as in pinko ribbons for breast cancer awareness.

Good morning Obama Ladies!!!!!  The day is here!!!!!  I am so excited!  I am already flipping thru polls to see what's going on!!  Yesterday I got several "honks" and thumbs up from my Obama/Biden magnets on my car!  They just showed the side kick voting, and they said she did it in "record time."  Much quicker than Barack.  Yeah, she probably just clicked her name and got out.  It was super quick.  There's no way she could have went down the line thru the rest of it.  Interesting...huh?  They also had an interview with her and "Todd" and she said how much she has cleaned up "corruption" in Alaska. Uh huh.  And she wouldn't say who she voted for.  Must have been for Obama :-)  Today will be the last day we see the trolls nasty, disgusting ads!!  Short of poll fixing...Barack is our man!!  They showed someone on the news the other day that showed how easy it was to poll fix.  WTH???  Ladies in PA...keep us up to date as to what your polls are showing for your state.  That's a big one for us!  I just had to mute the TV as the Rev. Wright ad is on again. and again. and again.  What a pack of hate mongers the troll supporters are.  I guess they don't see how similar they are to that commercial themselves. Mute it!!!

OK..I'm going to keep checking in!!  Get the sweet potato pie going!!!!!!

OBAMA '08...it's only hours away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Laughing

i just got back from voting.  in the 20 years i've lived here, i've never had to wait in line to vote and today i did...it wasn't a long wait, but usually you could shoot a cannon through the place and not hit anyone.  today one parking lot was even full and they were using an overflow lot.  amazing.  i always feel so good after voting.

(In the interest of being bipartisan, I'm going to post this in both threads.)

Whoopie finally smacks down  the dim witted Elisabeth on the View and Joy and Sherri chimed in to teach the little bigot about the history of racism in america. This has been a very long time in coming. SNL was spot on when they captured her incessant whining and lack of ability to make sense. Elisabeth was shooting Dennis Hopper bullets when the republican Hopper said why he is voting for Obama.

Just got back from voting and what a great feeling it is! I got hubby to go to Starbucks for the first time (free coffee) and there were tons of people with I voted stickers. All the cashiers at the grocery store had stickers, too. Yep, Virginia might just be seeing the light, finally. I talked to my daughter who lives in Cambridge (across river from Boston) and she said the streets filled up at 7 a.m. and there's a real party atmosphere. They're blue as blue can be up there, but still....

    What a beautiful day!

    Holding hands....

I think I'm going to be crying all day. On the news they showed how excited people were to vote. Most touching were two young black boys, maybe 5 and 9 holding a homemade sign on an old bed sheet with Vote for Obama written on it in red, and blue. I think about how many first time and lapsed voters are becoming engaged and inspiring their children to do the same. I'm thinking about black little boys and girls in a post racially divisive country who will always know there is no glass ceiling on the american government, even though they don't yet have near equal representation, the sky is the limit. I'm thinking about kids who don't have to grow up thinking the majority of this country thinks they are unworthy of the highest office in the land. I am thinking about the legacies of Rose Parks and MLK and all the men, women and children who marched for freedom and equality, most who's names we'll never know. I am thinking about RFK and the realization of his vision. I am thinking about those who have been enslaved, beaten, abused. threatened and even killed because of their minority statuses. I am thinking Neil Armstrong's words, "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

This is one of the best days for the world. and we are so lucky to play a small part of it. through our votes and volunteer efforts. Even the best McCain supporters will probably be proud of the history of this election and how far we've come as a nation/. I know there is still work to do and progress to be gained, but today is a proud, proud day for this nation.
