Whoops! Didn't mean to hit submit!
I don't surf alot, mostly just check cnn.com and weather.com, but I definitely noticed that my computer it MUCH faster after I deleted those temporary internet files (which took FOREVER, so I can see why you'd want to do it when you weren't trying to use the computer!)
So, the disc defrag and disc cleanup are different things than deleting the temporary files? I'm generally under strict orders from my "tech support" (my friend's husband) not to touch anything without checking with him - that was a result of me accidently completely deleting my windows (I think?) and replacing it with something. I swear, that time, all I did was click on that message that says, "your computer needs updates" like I had done numerous times before, but all hell broke loose!
Computer stuff gives me a headache, and that sux!
-
If comp is funky after a certain time- are there any scans running? When I have one of those big ones (which I alays set to run on auto at a time when in theory I am sleeping) everything is slow, can't work the mouse etc.
-
You can call him and ask about the stuff I mentioned. I would think he'd know about that stuff and explain it better to you. Even surfing cnn and the Weather.com put a lot of crap on your puter to see where you go before and after you've visited their site. I hate the way the weather site has slowed to a crawl and those stupid pop ups. That and nascar are the only sites i have trouble with doing that. Talk to the guy and get his okay before doing this then. But you can then also set it to run overnight weekly. Works much better

Sharon, I have Internet explorer 6. to do disk cleanup and defrag.
- Left click on the start button
- Hover over all programs
- Hover over Accessories
- Left click on System Tools to open up the box to the right
- Left click on Disk defrag.
- Here you will see analyze and defrag. If I haven't defraged recently, I click on analyze to see if it needs to be defraged. A box will pop up after analyzed and say this does or doesn't need to be defrag. If it does click on defrag now. It may take 15 + minutes to run the defrag program and when it is complete a message will pop up saying defrag complete.
Edited to add: Sorry Wish, I missed this page where you answered the question on how to defrag the computer.

I know! What is up with weather.com? It's such a pain now!
OK, back to work for me, good day ladies...
-
Thanks for the help but is there a way to access it other than from the start button?
I can't find it that way Sheila.
Even to delete history etc. I had to go from settings to control panel and found internet options there.
But I cannot seem to find programs, to accessories, to system tools. I'll keep looking tho. Thankyou again.
-
You know the start button where you go to shut down or look for programs to access? That's the start button we are talking about...When you click on,, just above it are the All progams button and then go on from there? I hope this helps.
-
Download Ccleaner. It will clean everything with 1 click. I have been using it for quite some time.
-
I got it about the start button but for some reason mine does not take me to internet options from there. Thanks for trying.
-
Bumping (pun intended)
Spent the morning at the police station reporting that stupid fender bender. Now to my insurance company tomorrow......sigh.
-
Sharon, try going to the start button, then to the "control panel" (on mine it is always in the righthand column), and then to internet settings. Different versions of Windows have different pathways to get the same thing accomplished. And the Apple operating systems are a whole 'nuther thing...
-
Cleaning out your temporary internet files is almost the same as cleaning out your cache files. And different browsers have different ways to do it.

Hope this helps.
Hugs,

-
Thx Pat, got to control panel but can't find internet settings.
-
On mine it is called "internet options", and is in the middle of the second row of icons on the control panel.
-
Sharon,
Go to Start and click on Computer.
Right click on the C drive and go to Properties.
Click on Tools and choose Defragmentation.
You are trying to defragment, right?

Hi, all. Just a quickie that the bc.org site was actually down for maintenance so that's why it was weird. However, all the ideas about computer maintenance are good. If you have a "Help" button on your computer, you can usually find the defrag thing under "Performance" or something.
Went to the doctor, got an antibiotic, feel like crap, going back to bed.
-
Yes, MissS, thankyou!!! I think I finally found it. The route you said.
-
I'm finally defragged!!! Thankyou everyone for the combined effort. What a gang!!
-
Thanks for all the tips on disc cleanup... I haven't done any cleanup since I got this computer, so maybe it's time!! ;-)
Hugs

Sorry you are feeling like crap Kathi. Good drugs and a good night's sleep will hopefully have you feeling better tomorrow. Hugs.

Hello fellow bitching, whining groaners...just popping in for a sec to see how everyone is doing. My biggest whine is the weather...enough already...these freezing temperatures and snow, ice, sleet have gone on long enough! That coupled with the price of fuel oil is insane.
Sending hugs to all in need...here's to you girls
-
Isabella4 - So sorry that this is on your shoulders. I have no ideas...just wanted to give you a ((HUG)).
On a (I hope) happier note, what kind of pups do you have?
thinking of you and hoping something comes along to help your situation.

Ha~ Sue, I'd be in big trouble if Dh tried anything on my puter! Rather he would be. He knows better than to touch my mouse. It's one reason I love my trackball. No one knows how to use it so they use his laptop instead:) Works for me!

The other PM was from me. I'm so sorry if I freaked you out. It WAS meant as a joke. I wanted it to mean that the computer gremlins were watching you...nothing scary or eerie. Your post said it was like your computer had gremlins.
I truly apologize if it upset you..that was not my intent.
-
Jane - You know what, it's a major statement about the state of things on these boards that I had even the slightest hesitation that it was a joke. I really did think it was a joke, but despite my best efforts to always stay out of the fray, I guess I got a little paranoid. No worries at all, like I said, I was pretty sure it was a joke. (And when I re-read, I could see that I sounded a little paranoid!) And honestly, I was more perplexed than upset.
In the meantime, I am just beside myself to hear that AlaskaDeb has died. When all that stuff started happening, I'll admit that I thought, "oh no, that doesn't sound good." But it really did sound like they were figuring things out and that she was doing better. I don't know, I'm just speechless, I really thought she was going to be OK.
I need to go to sleep now I think, with some help from some tylenol PM.
Thanks for being here ladies, it's funny how much it helps to be able to "talk" to you all...
-
OMGOSH!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm stunned, beyond belief...........CRAP on this #(EW*#)$8 Disease! Dang it all........................sh*T!!!!!
-
Oh, no......you said it, wish. I'm so sorry to hear about AlaskaDeb! How is John? She & her family seemed so brave & valiant. I can't believe she's gone. This is a massive SUX.
