Hi all,

So, I've survived the chemo and I finished rads about a week ago.  Whew, what a time!  I'm so happy it's over, and if you have been through it, you know what I mean.  Now I have more time to concentrate on feeling better, and I want to work on losing those 10 pounds that I have gained sitting around.  I'm starting to get some of my energy back, and I'm trying to get back into exercising regularly again.  For me, this is mostly walking or working out at the gym.

I also have not been eating well.  I have felt sorry for myself, and thought that if I wanted chocolate, I deserved it!  In my weekly checkup, the rads nurse always asked if my appetite was good.  Well, heck, yeah!  My appetite has never been better, and as a result, my favorite pants don't fit.  I need to start paying more attention to my intake.  It's a good time of the year for that, with all the fresh fruits and veggies.

I want to get healthy and strong again.  I want to lose 10 pounds in 2 months, which I know will help me to feel better and have more energy.  Anyone want to join me, and help me stay accountable???

I agree, CHJ, and I'd love to join you, but I'm having a problem.  I still can't get over the fact that, now that I've finished chemo, I can't keep eating things just because they taste good.

If there was one good (pleasant?) thing about chemo, it was the fact that I could un-apologetically rummage through the pantry and the fridge, looking for something... anything... that would be appealing to my taste buds and GI tract.  Entire grocery lists were based on what would taste good, rather than what was healthy.

No more, alas.  Back to the grind.   Did I say I hate cooking?  Maybe that belongs on Patrice's thread...

Right, otter - same here.  All my life I've been dieting off and on, and with chemo, I had to eat to keep my strength up.  It was a food free-for-all!!!  I picked up some really bad habits.  But for today, I ate well.  Mango (from Florida, my brother sends them to me), cantelope, nectarines, yum!  I only had 1 ice cream cone.  Laughing

Tomorrow is a new day, and I packed myself a healthy lunch.  If only I can keep out of the Hershey's chocolates in my coworker's office...

I'm impressed you only gained 10lbs.  After my free for all during chemo/rads I gained more like 20!  I did manage to lose it all by joining Weight Watchers.  Then I had Samuel and regained some.  I'm back to only about 7 lbs.  I'm running again and watching better what I eat and they are slowly coming off!

Oh I am in.  This is exactly the thread I needed to see tonight.  We were diagnosed almost the same time.  I have finished chemo now, I have not got my energy back yet, my counts are still low. It's creating a vicious cycle though, do less, have less energy, do less, have even less energy.  I too was an eat whatever looked or sounded good and resulted with extra pounds.

I'd love to join the group and work on my eating and exercising.

magsandmattsmom - I started out with an advantage - when I was first diagnosed, I was so stressed out I lost 10 pounds.  The doctors were jerking me around and it took forever to get started with surgery and treatment.  In that time I was a mess and couldn't eat.  Now that was just not like me!  During chemo, I would gain a few then lose a few.  I couldn't eat much for about 5-6 days, but then had 2+ weeks to eat like a crazy woman. So it would be down 1, up 2 lbs. during chemo, for 6 cycles.  Then during rads (oh, how I hated rads!) I gained a few more.  I do feel fortunate that I'm only slightly above where I started out.  But I feel like part of my healing is to get back in shape and get healthy again.  Good for you for getting back to it, especially since you had a baby in the meantime.  You are doing great!  How much do you run?  I used to be a runner, but I feel better just walking these days (the knees, the feet...)

azsunn, glad to have you aboard!  When did you finish chemo, and did you have radiation?  If you just finished chemo, you do need to give yourself time to rest, and start slowly - especially if your counts are still low.

So my big accomplishment today was walking the stairs at the subway station.  For months I have been too tired and weak, and have been using the escalator.  Today I did the stairs, and it wasn't too hard.  I have a turkey sandwich and lots of fruit in my lunch box for today.  All I have to do is to stay out of the goodies that lurk everywhere in the office...

    Have a healthy day, everyone!

How much do I run?  Right now, not a lot Tongue out and even when I did I still didn't run a lot.  3-4 miles at a time.  What I'm doing right now is giving it 30 minutes and that's all.  I don't have time for much more.  So my goal is pace of running not length of time.  I hope to get to 3 miles in 30 minutes.  We'll see.  Right now I'm just happy with the amount I'm doing.  See I also had open heart surgery (totally un BC related) in April so running at all is a big deal.  I just mainly love running because of the sense of accomplishment I feel and also what it does for my body.Wink When I run my thighs get is such better shape!

    Anyway I ramble as usual!

I am in. I finished chemo on July 16/08. I just got the final news, No rads. I start Herceptin in 3 weeks.

I have gained 10-15 since March after I recovered from surgery. I am 20 up from last summer.

I have been a casual but comitted triathlete since '03 and hope to race again. I start swimming on Monday. I rode my bike for 20 minutes today and had pretty tired legs ( I only just stopped Neupagen) My Ostepath has suggested I ride and swim and walk, and wait on the running until the joints feel stronger.

I have a pretty rock solid eating plan in my normal life that I am going back to. I will spell it out to you later. I lost 40 lbs on this plan in 2002.

     Cheers,Noelle

OK, ladies, I'll be glad to have company!  Noelle, I'm not sure I could keep up with your triathalons (well, I don't have a bike) but I know what exercise does for you, and it's all good.  I did run a marathon once, but that was a long time ago!  I would also like to hear about your eating plan.

Michelle, welcome!  Azsunn, are you still with us?

I too have been successful in the past, and know I can do it once I get going.  I once joined a group called TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) and was successful, just because they kept me accountable - weekly weigh-ins.  I know what to eat, and I know how to lose weight.  If I keep a log of my intake, I know what I have to do to lose.  My problem is motivation!  And, it takes time to plan good meals (easier to grab a burger than to whip up a salad, etc.) and to exercise.  And all of our systems are screwed up from chemo & drugs & stress & radiation & a major change in our routine.

How do we stay accountable?  Weekly or twice-a-week weigh-ins?  An occasional report on good/bad food choices?  I would like to hear about how other people attack it.  I have tried to get going the past few days, but it's tough to start because my body is used to getting more food than I should be eating.  Plus the fact that we have done a lot of celebrating - done with chemo; done with radiation; thank you lunch to my friends who have helped; dh got a raise - we are always looking for reasons to go out to eat to celebrate!!

I did get a good long walk in last night.  I am fortunate in that we just moved to a community with lots of sidewalks, a health club, and an indoor + an outdoor pool.  I have no excuses!  For a while, I couldn't do a lot - first because of low energy levels with chemo, and then because of rads marks and tapes (had to be careful not to rinse or sweat them off) but that's all over, my burn marks are healing, and I'm starting to get more energy.  I have no excuses! (whoops, I already said that Laughing).  I'm off to water aerobics in about an hour.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any help from you all!

I'm with you on the the ten pounds!  I am in the middle of rads right now, having completed 4 A/C, and 4 Taxol treatments.  I lost weight on A/C, gained it on Taxol and right now seem to be holding steady with a few extra pounds.  I'd really like to blame all the weight gain on Taxol, but I know those comfort foods figure in as well.

I am taking a Tai Chi Chih class and trying to walk as much as possible.  Don't feel like bouncing up and down much though due to the rad boob, which is a bit sensitive right now.  I used to do Yoga every day but haven't been inspired to start again.

Welcome Wintermoon!  You are right, rads are not totally compatible with exercise, when all you want to do is go around braless. :)   It will get better.  I'm 9 days past rads, and my boost area is still a bit sore, but definitely improving.  At least I don't mind putting on a bra now (though it's off the second I get in the house!)  Went to water aerobics this morning, it was my first time to do that.  It was fun, and a decent workout.  It will be better once I get my port out (on 8/6) and once I heal up a bit more.  The cool water feels good, but my swim suit is a little rough on the spot.

Corn on the cob for supper, yum!  How's everyone else doing?

Hi guys-I'm in! I've always been up and down with the weight, thankfully, so long as I exercise, I can usually keep it stable, but during the AC I lost 15 punds-didn't eat much due to the mouth sores, and metallic taste, but gained a lot of weight during the taxotere, some of it fluid, and unfortunately, I craved salty foods like pickles, etc. I joined Curves 3 months ago, and also got myself a weighted (5 lb) Hoola hoop, which has taken inches off my waistline in just a few weeks. My problem is 1. I HATE to cook, and 2. It's just my 10 year old and myself, so although I have her eating pretty healthy, I can't seem to eat supper most nights.

I am 10 days out of my last chemo, and steadily losing inches which I assume is fluid. Can anyone else tell me how long it took them to feel like they had no excess fluid?

So, I am having my last weekend of fun food before I start the diet. I don't expect to be perfect, but I am going to try.

I will list the rules of my eating plan as I have time to type them.

The plan is not that different from South Beach. The website I use to choose my food is www.fatwars.com. It has a fairly good glycemic index ( the speed at which your body converts food to sugar in your blood ) list. So, the ,simple idea is you choose your foods mostly from the low glycemic list and rarely from the high glycemic list. ie. White Bread= high glycemic an Apple= low glycemic.

Rule #1 no juice or soda pop( no not even diet, artificial sweeteners are bad for you, and make you crave other sweets) I still drink coffee with a little brown sugar but other than that I drink water

Rule #2 you can have 1 cheat meal a week, I used to do it on Sunday night and have a meal with all the bad things I wanted and dessert. A little bit of dark chocolate ( no not a candy bar, and no milk chocolate either) a day is fine to satisfy a craving.

Rule #3 No white rice, No white sugar and avoid white and enriched flour products like the plague(white bread, white pasta, most cereals) When I lost the big weight in '02 I did no wheat, no rice and only a very small amount of brown sugar. If you choose whole/ sprouted wheat products with no white/ enriched flour in them you can get away with a little bit of wheat. Do not assume a label that says 'whole grains'means it. Check the ingredients carefully. Enriched flour messes with the hormones in women, if you are going to quit it, this is the time to do it as you are likely messed up in the hormone dept anyway! LOL!

Rule #4 no eating in the 2-3 hours before bedtime- this REALLY works.

Tomorrow I will give you more.

    Cheers, Noelle

Hi Ladies!  I want to join this group too.  I lost weight during chemo., but found 2x as much as I lost after I finished up with the chemo, surgery and rads.

I would like to drop at least 20lbs now.  To accomplish this goal, So far, I have modified my diet to include more fruits & veggies.  I found a great way to track my calories, fat, cholesterol, protein, vitamins, etc.  www.kraftfoods.com  There are also good recipes for healthy eating on this website. It gives you the opportunity to track your weight,BMI, nutrition, activity level, etc.  Hope this helps someone else here.

Did anyone decide if we will be reporting our weight loss and how often it will be?  Is everyone on here weighing themselves weekly or bi-weekly?  Is anyone measuring to see how many inches she has lost?

    Have a healthy week!  Karen

Hi Karen - welcome!  Well, I started this thing, but have been negligent!  And, since I made the first post a week ago, I have gained 2 pounds. Tongue out  I have the exercise thing down pat, but not the eating part.  I seriously did exercise 5 days in the past week.  But I can't seem to shake the bad eating habits.  The 2 pound gain as of this morning has a lot to do with a big meal out yesterday.  I imagine most of it will be gone tomorrow, if I eat reasonably today.

I'd like to do a weekly weigh in.  You don't have to say the number, just + or - from the week before.  What day should we weigh in?  I started last Monday but I'm ready to start again.  If Monday isn't a good day (because it follows the weekend) we could do Fridays.  Whatever, I just need help!!  I tend not to measure myself during weight loss, but rely on my clothes to tell me.  I know which pants fit and which don't...  If you want to report that as well, go for it!

Noelle, a belated thanks for your input.  I agree with the not eating before bed.  It's not good for you, and it keeps me from sleeping well.  I also get it about the refined flour.  I tend to eat whole grains.  Now about the soda thing - how on earth could I live without my diet soda????

If you're in, please reply with the day you'd like to use as weigh in.  Anybody?

    Hi ladies-

I'm still here, not any skinnier but still here Tongue out.  I have been trying to eat a bit better, mostly cutting out all the junk food that I wouldn't have had in my house before dx/tx, but somehow felt deserving of during it.  I'm not sure if I will do a specific diet plan or not.

I vote for a day other than Monday for reporting, weekends tend to cause a little bloat around here.  Are any of you on Tamoxifen?  Have you noticed any bloat with that?

Exercise is the next piece of the puzzle for me.  I froze my gym membership at the start of all this, and I'm not sure if its a good idea to go back yet.  I have plenty of other options to get the exercise in.... I just haven't!

I hope you all have a great day.

azsunn- good point!  I am taking Arimidex.  After my first encounter with bc in 1994-1995, I took tamox for 5 years.  I can't say whether or not it caused me any weight gain.  I wanted to blame it, but my mom said, "honey, it's not the drugs, it's the fact that you are now 40."  (Thanks, Mom!) When I went off the drug 5 years later, I waited for some change or weight loss, but alas, nothing.  I can't say that I notice any se's from the Arimidex.  Unless I can blame it for my voracious appetite!

So, OK, maybe a Friday weigh-in?

We all know how to exercise & eat right, we just need some motivation.  So let's start today, eh?  Cool

Take look at Wendy Chant's website...www.joinforeverfit.com. Her "plan", not really a diet except for the first week, is all about macropatterning and throwing your metabolism out of balance so that it burns fat rather than storing it. If nothing else, the nutrition information in her book Crack the Fat Loss Code is really helpful. I had gained weight in the year before my dx, so went into the whole thing heavier than normal. I stayed steady during my chemo, but after I went on the tamox and went into meno I gained about 10 pounds in just a few months. Although it has been a test of my will power I have finished my carb-deplete week and I lost 7 pounds! That is motivation to keep it going. Good luck to all of us!

I'm with you Kath on the Monday weigh in.  They do tend to be harder to do.

CHJ,  I have exactly the opposite problem.  I do ok with managing the foods I eat, but man I just can't get back into exercising like I should.  Right now ALL of my clothes are tight so it won't be difficult to tell if I lose inches.   Anyway, Friday weigh in works good for me!  Thanks for starting this.

Drgnfly:  Congrats on your first week success!  We have some good ideas being posted here.  Hopefully everyone will continue to post helpful hints on this huge (pardon the pun) battle!

    Good luck! Karen

Oooo, Kayree, good idea!  I'll work on that later (I'm at work now. Laughing)  We can start everyone at zero this Friday and then go from there, OK?

Yes, Drgnfly, that's awesome about your first week!  Keep it up!  (OK, we won't start you at zero this week!!)

Kayree, ditto on the tight clothes.  A year or so ago, I bought some really nice pants that fit me well.  I have them in about 4 colors, and they are great for work.  But I can't zip them now.  So those pants are my goal!  Today I'm wearing a denim jumper - it's cute and I like it, but I tend to wear it when I can't get into my better clothes (i.e., it is from my frumpy collection).

    Have a healthy day, everyone!

I get weighed every Tuesday by the Rad Onc.  Can I use that weight each week?  I lost a pound this week. Yea!  I'm trying to stay awake from a lot of carbs....but I love them so.  I could eat French bread everyday.  My veggie garden is starting to become prolific so I've got a lot of green and yellow beans to eat.  My tomatoes are not too far behind.  Hoping I can fill up on the veggies and stay off the bread.

    HI ALL!
I sure hope the scales I used today were wrong!  If not, I have actually GAINED weight instead of losing--uggghhhh!   Anyway I do go back to the doc tomorrow so hopefully I'll have better weight loss news to report.

Wintermoon6- I am a "carboholic" myself--bread, cookies, cakes, etc.  I love fresh veggies from the garden too, but this year, we didn't have one.  I am just depending on my neighbors to share :)   Good luck with cutting the carbs!

CHJ - Thank goodness for clothes that don't hug our bodies!  I cleaned out my closets this past week and I fhad a range of clothes from size 6 to size 12.  I finally gave up on some of the smaller sizes and just got rid of them.  Good Lord, by the time I can get back into them, they will be 10 years out of style!  Now I'm so depressed, I think I'll have a bowl of ice cream Embarassed.  Sorry ladies!  I know we are suppose to encourage each other to eat healthier--not give in to impulses!  Ahh, maybe I will skip it afterall.  Guilt set in that quick.

I'll check back in tomorrow!  Have a good one.  Karen

Wintermoon, sure, you can use your Tuesday weigh in.  We're not going to get all legalistic here.  Smile

Karen, I feel your pain!  But don't fret, today is a new day!  I gave up on some of the smaller sizes also.  I feel "normal" in a size 10-12 (I'm 5' 7").  But when those get tight, uh-oh!  I never really was tiny - my wedding dress, 28 years ago was a 12, so I'm probably doing OK - but there was a time when I was gung-ho and bought some size 8's.  At that point in my life, people were telling me I looked sick and anorexic (hello!  I still weighed 135!!!).  I guess I carry it well.  When I say to people I know that I want to lose weight now, they say, why?

Oh, and Karen, I will NOT give up ice cream!  I believe that in moderation, anything is OK.  I'll stick to a very small bowl of the light stuff (Edy's Grand Light French Silk, YUM!!) or a small ice cream sandwich (135 calories).

FRIDAY WEIGH IN: I'll start out by admitting that today I weigh 162 (a pound more than when I started this thread, sheesh!) and I would like to get back down to 150.  I feel like that's realistic for me.

For everyone else, you don't have to say what your weight is, just + or -.  I'll put the participants in the beginning thread so we don't have to go looking for it, OK?  Let me know if you are in.

Today I'll probably go to water aerobics.  Are we all trying to exercise?

Also, when did everyone finish treatment?

    Have a healthy day, everyone!

Hi Ladies, count me in.  I had gained some weight before I got diagnosed.  I always gain weight in the winter and then give up all my "snack" food and white carbs for lent and get back to normal.  I'm 5'2" with a tiny frame and you'd probably kick me out if you knew my goal weight....but, I digress.  At my advance age (55) this ain't working anymore.  So I had additional weight as well as gaining weight during the steroid phase of treatment.  When I had ovarian cancer 5 1/2 years ago I gained 18 pounds and managed to get it all off over time...but that was 5 years ago.  The body has changed.

I want to lose ten pounds.  I have started back walking and am trying to get my toning in (I have hand and leg weights) but the toning is pushing it.  I exercised all during the ovarian cancer treatments but not this time.  I'm hoping to join a class in the Fall because that always motivates me to push myself harder than if I'm exercising alone.

I finished chemo March 13th, had bilat mast Apr 30th and finished rads July 23rd.  So glad to be finished although I'm still getting Herceptin every three weeks.

I am 5'2" my weight this morning was 146.

I want to lose 10-20 lbs.  At the end of last summer I was down to 128.

I finished chemo on July 16th.I am still very tired, but manage to work on my feet( I own a retail store) for 12-15 hours a week and have worked out a little since chemo stopped. My legs were in a lot of pain/ exhaustion from the chemo and the neupagen, and they are only a little bit better now.

I'm still in on this!  I too am happy if I'm at a size 10 - but if I get higher than that I know I need to step back!  A couple of years ago I lost weight and ran.  I was down to a size 8 and a few 6's!  I look at those pants now and wonder how I did that!  I just want to be healthy - that's my focus.  Ok happy and healthy!  H&H :)

Oh this morning I was 146.  I'd like to be 140.

Hooray, now we're getting some momentum going!  Barbara & Maura, I'll add you to the list.

Noelle, you are pretty fresh off chemo, so make sure you cut yourself a break until you get some of your energy back.  I worked during chemo also (desk job) but only 3 days a week, and one of those is at home.  I needed the normalcy or something.  My boss & coworkers were so good to me throughout that time.

Maura, hang in there!  Chemo will be over before you know it, and radiation is not that bad. I just hated the going every day.  I was a bit fatigued, but it was not nearly as bad as chemo.  The hard part was having a sore boob, and not wanting to wear a bra.

BMac - I hear you about the age thing.  I'm 53, and it's harder than it used to be to shake those pounds.  Congrats on surviving the ovarian cancer for 5+ years!  Sorry you had to try out bc also.  This is my second time with bc, the first was 13 years prior.  You do what you have to do and move on, I guess.

I think with me, to keep on track with eating and exercising, I need to have time to focus on it, and with treatments and doctors and no energy, I just couldn't even think about it.  And my routine was upside down, and my system was totally screwed up.  Now that I'm done with all that, I'm ready to concentrate on getting healthy! I won't even mention the fact that during the 6 months from almost the day of my dx until I was done with chemo, we were trying to sell our house.  We went to closing 12 days after my last chemo, and then moved.  That, my friends, is stress!!! Tongue out

But now the stress has subsided, and I'm ready.  Thanks for joining me and helping me to get motivated.

    Hi Ladies!

OOOPS---I've already missed the first reporting date!  Anyway, my weight loss news is HORRIBLE!  If the scales were right at my PS visit Thursday, I actually GAINED weight.  Put me down for +2 this week  Yell!  It's gotta get better than this.

I finsihed treatment in January 2008 (scheduled for reconstruction surgery in September).  I probably gained 20+ lbs over the past year.  I am 5'5 and wearing a size 12.  Let's just say I need to lose quite a bit of weight.  I feel best around a size 8.

CHJ-  You definitely have had a stressful time throughout this ordeal.  I agree about the time issues and needing to keep track of my routine.  Right now, I'm tracking my eating plan and exercise (or lack thereof) on the website:  www.kraftfoods.com     After this week, I think I better start exercising a whole lot more!

    Good Luck Ladies!
