I sleep best when it's pouring down rain at night--the rain beats down on our roof--we have cathedral ceilings. I'm asleep in no time at all.

For the other times, I turn a fan on--any kind of white noise should help you sleep--could even try a tape of rain, beach, or cricket sounds. Helps to turn your mind off.

Asked doc about Tylenol PM or any of the otc sleep aids--said not to take--can really interfere w/individual's body system--can cause grogginess in am and difficulty getting up. He prescribed Lunesta 2mg--I only use about once a week or so, can even cut them in half and still work. Put me right out and I'm raring to go the next am. Lunesta comes in 1,2, or 3 mg.

    happy dreams to all!

Hi Grace, how are you?  Do you still come up my way?  I know we talked about getting together sometime so I'm up for it.

I take ativan when I want to sleep bu I don't take it very often.

Grace ... I have to agree, falling asleep to rain beating on the roof is the best!  The white noise is a good suggestion also.  I do hate taking too many otc drugs like tylenol or advil  .. I worry about what they are doing to my liver or stomach.  Great advice about taking Lunesta.

    AlwaysHope,

CHAT thread?  At first I assumed you must have said, "cat" thread.  There are at least two threads on this bco board that have been taken over entirely by cats.  For awhile, I thought this one was going the same direction.

Are there any other retirees out there besides me?

Nope, no cat thread here.  I don't particularly like cats as pets though I do think some are very pretty.

    Twink,

Just wanted to jump in and say I loved your dog picture. It filled me with memories of my St. Bernard, his head was about that size and the expression just as wonderful. I could almost feel him drooling on my leg again. Drool is good. I copied it onto my desk top to show my honey when he gets home.

    Hi Margaret,

I'd love to get together! My schedule right now is just crazy. For the next 2 tuesdays I am having celiace plexus block in my back for my LE abdominal pain.

I haven't been coming over hill to swim this quarter because I came down with this nasty virus and I just can't get rid of it. It comes and goes, and pops up whenever it wants. Have been to so many docs I could scream. Trying to stay well enough to get these last 2 injections. Ackkkkk! So guess I"m saying perhaps in April sometime? I'm not working so I'm fairly flexible as to meeting dates & times

If I remember correctly you do work full-time (sorry my memory is not the greatest with all the meds I'm on)? But perhaps some weekend. Where are you at? I'm near Santa Cruz. Often in Cupertino.

Anyway, let me know what your schedule is like. PM me if you want.

I'd really enjoy meeting you. And hopefully the Bay Area group or North Cal group can figure out a reunion. They are a great group of ladies and I'd sure like to see them again.

Hi Grace, I was just thinking about you the other day.  I live in San Mateo, I think you said you were in Redwood City a lot - does my memory serve me right?  I was supposed to meet with Doreen the other day, she was in my area, and when the day rolled around that we were talking about getting together, I was sick with a sinus headache.  I do work full-time but April is pretty good right now.

Hey Peggy - I just saw on another thread that you booked your Alaska Cruise!

WOOHOO!  When are you coming?  Are you going to be in my neck of the woods?  I sure we will have a chance to get together.  You know you are always welcome to stay here if you have the time.

I think planning a vacation is half the fun...anticipation.....

It looks like the first post on this thread that explained what it is got deleted, so in a nutshell:

You can post anything you want....continue a conversation that is already going on or "hijack" the thread and start talking about something totally different...whatever strikes your fancy....

Thanks Ann, for bringing this back, and thanks Deb for reviewing the (lack of) rules!

It's been perfect weather here. Slightly cool and overcast in the early mornings, then gloriously sunny and mild (80deg.) all day. In the 60's at night for perfect open-window sleeping,

Yes, we do get spoiled in San Diego. Cool

Oh, and the ocean is a lovely, refreshing 71.9deg.

I read about this thread on another thread so I'm glad to see it's back up. Thanks for explaining the rules Deb.

We've had a lot of storms blowing through here and it's starting to get old. Although I'm grateful to have the free watering of my plants and filling of my pool, I'd like to be able to get out and work in the yard. Right now it's far too wet and muddy out there! I think today is supposed to be dry so maybe I'll get out there again.

Anyone have any tips on getting hummingbirds to come to feeders? I've tried all summer to get them to come but nothing. Last night my feeder was covered by bees so I just took it down this morning. I have great luck with yellow finches, but I love hummingbirds and really want to have feeders for them.

Sheila - another Sheila here, about hummingbirds, try tying some of the bright pink marking ribbon like surveyors use around the feeders they are attracted to the fluorescent shades. Also if you have the yellow 'bee guards' on the ports, coat them with a red paint or fingernail polish, the bees are attracted to the yellow but not red. It may take a while for the birds to be attracted and once you have them coming, make sure that you put out feeders every year early in the spring. I mix my own food (1 part sugar to 4 parts water with no food color) the color on the feeder will attract them. I boil my water in the microwave, stir in the sugar and let it cool. store any unused in a sealed container in the refrig but let come to room temp before putting back in the feeder. You also need to keep the feeders clean. I wash mine out with hot water and vinegar once a week, the soap can leave residue that the hummers don't like.

Last year I was going through treatment and didn't get my feeders out. I have feeders that stick onto my front window as well as several that hang on shepherds hooks around the porch. Several years ago my hubby was sitting on the porch and the hummers buzzed his head as if to say get away from the feeders I want to eat.

I keep a finch feeder in the yard as well (finch sock with thistle seed) and I have had as many as 5 hanging on the sock at one time.

Weather related, we have had storms every evening for the past 3 nights, it is welcome though, we are in a severe to extreme drought.

I was gone all day yesterday and didnt get home until very late.  I was so happy to see this thread has been resurrected!  We sure did have fun here in the past.  I will never forget the Barbie Dolls!  BTW - I still have them in my closet.  I know I told many of you I threw them in a big bon fire - but I didnt haha.  Still need them sometimes - especially when I get mad!

I had a wonderful time yesterday at my SIL's.  It was a beautiful sunny day and we just hung out at her pool.  Sun bathing?  Do any of you remember the good old days where you would lay out and bake for hours?  Maybe some of you didnt, but heck - I was a sun worhsiper for petes sake.  Did any of you use baby oil?  Gosh I remember where we put iodine in the baby oil - to get MORE sun!  Funny - cause yesterday I was rubbing that lotion to protect myself from the sun all day long.  Finially put a Tshirt and hat on - and still got a little sunburn!

My husband looked at me and said something is wrong with your face.  I thought for a minute and laughed to myself.  So was it the dark circles under my eyes, my hair that suddenly decided to turn curly 3 years after chemo, or the wrinkles from all the sun bathing I did years ago.  He said you have a big red rash on both your cheeks.  Now I knew my butt was covered, so I figured he meant my face.

I ran inside because I have heard others tell stories of getting reactions to the sun after chemo.  Looked real close and it wasnt a rash at all.  It was freckles!  Now when your young freckles are cute.  When your old - they are not!  I think freckles turn into age spots once one gets into their 50's.

Ann:  Im so glad you decided to bumpity bump this thread.  Gotta have some fun in our lives along with the support.  I do believe they go hand in hand.

Peggy:  So good to see you.  I loved you bitch on the other thread.  Sometimes I feel that way also.  Now I want you to know Im jealous of 2 things.  First your Alaskan cruise - me wants to go too.  Second the fact that there is a change you will meet up with DebC!  You cant see it, but Im doing a little pouting right now.

DebC:  Alaska seems so far away.  Didnt you meet up with Silvergirl when she went on an alaskan cruise in the past?  Glad you explained the rules.  Sometimes I get way too talkative and my mind and fingers go in all different directions - here Im safe doing that lol.

Lisa:  Im also jealous of you.  Living in SanDiego and its beautiful weather and ocean.  Also that you live so close to SoCal and BMD and they you all get together monthly!  I finially saw a picture of you so I can now visualize who Im talking to.

SamSheila:  Humming birds are so pretty.  I was thinking arnt there certain flowers that attract them also?  Despite all the bad winter, cooler weather, and rainy Spring here in Chicagoland, I will have to go water my plants today.  Its been dry, dry, dry - and they are a bit thirsty.  I love feeding the birds, but I had to stop because West Nile Virus has been identified here in the county I live in.  I hate mosquitos to begin with and I figure it would be just my luck to get bitten by one that bit a bird!

lv- the other Sheila:  You have just made my morning.  I laughed so hard when I read about the hummingbird telling your husband to stay away from their space.  We have hit the news here in Chicago because we have some red winged black birds who are attacking people in the parks that are walking too close to their nests.  One time my husband was walking and a big old crow attacked his head - wanted the hair for its nest.  Poor guy - that was years ago and he still is afraid of crows.

Bearlysane:  Im looking all over for you and hope you find we are here and have all been hijacked!  Im sending some bear hugs your way and hoping you are having a wonderful day.

    Nick,

I hate to hear about the freckles that turn into age spots!  I never had freckles, but I have TONS of moles, and well, moles are nasty cause they can turn into cancer... there is that word again!

    Thanks for the canolis!

It is HOT here too, in North Carolina, near the lovely Myrtle Beach area!  I thought I heard thunder, but it seems quiet now.  Last night, though, it stormed here!  We had thunder, lightning and rain!  I usually like to listen to the rain at night.  It helps to calm me so I can sleep.

Lately though I just can't sleep very well.  I have been blaming it on Tamoxifen, but who knows?  Anyone else having trouble sleeping lately?  What did you do to help you sleep and did it work?
