Raye, I think your hair looks pretty much like mine and what it is "doing." Yes, I could lose a whole box of clips in my mane. LOL
Here is what I have to do: Shampoo and condition, then work some product (I use Deva AnGell) throughout. Clip curls down here and there. Use dryer with large diffuser so nothing at all blows around. Viola! No way can I dry with a brush as that just creates yucky looking dry hair that does not want to be shiney or flat. At least letting it dry in separate curls makes it look pretty shiney.
My visit to the hairdresser: He will decide what can or cannot be done. Up til now, he has only been willing to trim my "sideburns" to keep them in check instead of curling. I do think that he has been right not to touch anything in spite of my unhappiness at the whole process. Maybe he will do a tiny trim here or there next week. That, and the color, of course.
Laura! How's our girl?

To me, what is really cool is that I did it myself! Before, I'd go get it colored and highlighted. This time, I did the color one night and the streaks the next day. Saved myself tons of money and that makes me feel soooo happy to have what I want without the price gouge.
-
Laura - thanks sweetie. I look so grumpy in the pic - I am taking it down.

Tina, I am going to look for that hair product - does it help with the frizzies? I am embarrassed to post this after Rocktober's hot pics, but here it is-- it is frizzy on the side and almost too tall to fit in the frame of the camera. also, I don't use a diffuser! ugh. I need a new one and haven't gotten around to getting one. How did the appt with the hair stylist go?

-
Raye, you look gorgeous ...... in fact, you look there is special lighting floating around you. Can I just borrow your glow and take it everywhere with me?
-
Ok, y'all, I debuted my new makeup on my date last night and I do believe that it was a major success. At one point, the topic touched on makeup for some reason and my date remarked, "Well, you don't wear any makeup and you've got great color." HA! It only took me a freakin' half-hour to look so "natural" but what the hell. But I replied..."Well, I do wear a bit."
Anyway, it looked pretty nice....fresh and natural. I have a question about the PhotoFinish, though....how much are you supposed to use? I used only a very light layer and couldn't tell a very big difference from the way I look with just moisturizer and foundation. The DermaBlend was great though and just whisked those dark circles away! Yessssss! And speaking of great facial color, Raye, you are absolutely stunning! You look like one of those natural English beauties with the porcelain skin after a gentleman pays her a compliment and she flushes so prettily. Yes, you do!
~Marin
-
Hmmmm. Marin. If the PhotoFinish did not improve your look, then you probably don't have any little lines or large pores! That's a good thing!
Anyway, you needn't glop it on. Try using a bit more today and see how that works.
So glad you impressed your date. Deception, uh, artiface, is a wonderful thing and not easy to achieve. You must have a sure hand.
Has anyone read this book? "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter without Me?" Looks like a gold mine of info. I'm going to see if my library has it or can get it. http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Cosmetics-Counter-Without-7th/dp/1877988324/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209390844&sr=1-3

Hey, all! I've been lurking on this conversation and it took a while to read through all the comments! First off, don't look at my pic as it was taken by my webcam without any makeup!!!!! However, I do clean up pretty good when made up!
My FAVORITE mascara is Loreal Voluminous Naturale, it has the best brush and is water resistant. Doesn't smear or wash down my face from my weepy eyes during the day but comes off easily without the extra makeup remover step and without scrubbing.
Best lip color is Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer in Cocoa, very fresh sparkle, not too glittery. I also use it as a blush when travelling. (We go on yearly 2-weeks Harley trips and the smaller you pack the better!) For last-all-day lipstick, (and I've paid for and tried them all!!!!!) the best is Almay. Use a color just like your gum color (you know, the gum area around your teeth). It won't be too dark and will look like "natural" lips only better. You can also get it a little shimmery and it will be the best way to make your lips look fuller as you can go a little outside the edge. I use a color called Sugarplum.
I just bought a combo liner/shadow by WetnWild called PerfectPair Eye Wand, it's last all day color: liner is a espresso color and shadow a light pinkish tan. No sharpener needed! I use the liner for a shadow also and, therefore, in my makeup bag:
Concealer for scar on lip (and undereye area)
Almay lipcolor and Burt's Bees balm
Eyeshadow/Eyeliner Pencil (I use the shadow in the corners near nose also for the awake look)
Mascara
(use the balm for blush) - my skin looks streaky/dry with powder blush)
I think I look younger when I don't wear foundation, even if I have spots to cover with concealer. I think the over-made-up look really ages. I pretend my brown age spots and chemo spots are freckles. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!!!!!
My new dirty little secret: I used to pay $35/month to get my brows colored/waxed; since chemo no waxing is needed. So, I bought a box of Just for Men hair color for beards, use the dark brown color on my brows about once a month. The price for the box was about $5 at Wallyworld, and it will last forever. I haven't read the box for carcinogens, I'm afraid to.
PS: love this thread! Also, it helps to see the pix of all the beautiful ladies along with your suggestions!
-
Marin, for me, the photofinish is a good base for the makeup. It didn't fill lines but I sure use a lot less foundation by using that ..... some days now I just use the photofinish and some powder. I really like it and am going to invest in the big bottle!
-
Hi, Laura, and welcome! You gave us some great tips. Lip Shimmer for blush. Well, that's good to know in a pinch!
I think Rocktober is right about not using as much foundation with the PhotoFinish. Plus, I use a clean, dry makeup sponge to very lightly buff my makeup after it totally dries and that really gets rid of any funky spots where there might be too much makeup. I also bring the makeup slightly down my neck but in the ever-so-lightest way so that it is not obvious at all. I find much of using makeup effectively is having a light hand.
Oh, and I, too, also sometimes use just the PhotoFinish with blush, no foundation. It really does soften the whole look.
If you have only a few white hairs in your brows but too many to tweeze, try using an almost dry mascara wand to apply a bit of color just there. Works for me!

Was in Sephora last night getting a gift card for a friend, and I could've got lost in there. Too bad my future MIL was hurrying us to get back accross the street to Fortunoffs to pick out stemware.
I did walk out with a perfume I loved to use 2-3 years ago called Euphoria by Calvin Klein.
What perfume does everyone else wear? I don't think we've ever really talked about it.
Besides Euphoria my signature scents are Black Orchid By Tom Ford
and the old Hypnotic Poison by DIOR.
-
I love that Euphoria! But I've been hooked lately on Philosophy's Inner Grace. I have it in a little roll-on bottle, and carry it with me everywhere! Another current favorite is Masaki/Masaki. More floral than I usually go, but so gentle and sexy!
Sephora! Ahhh, I love that place. I'll take one of everything, thank you very much!

Scents: Well, aside from the Clinique Aromatics, I do like the La Source bath products from Crabtree and Evelyn. The body smoother or whatever you call it is really nice, very light but yummy.
I used to love C&E's Goatmilk line before they screwed it up and took most of the scent out to please the unisex crowd.
Most modern scents give me an immediate headache; I don't know why, but I can use the "oldies" with no problems: Chanel 22 and the Lanvin scents. Remember when everyone was wearing Shalimar? Tilden and Thurber in Providence used to have a similar scent called Royal Purple that was wonderful but a bit on the heavy/sexy side. And then, there is Joy!
Tina
-
Thank you Ladies - so sweet.
I too use just a little Photofinish and haven't been wearing foundation as of late. Just a little powder and light true pink blush. I do go a little heavy on the eyes sometimes, lots of mascara and eyeliner, not exactly natural looking, but not too much either if I downplay the lips. I agree Laura - I feel that I look younger w/o the foundation as well.
Perfumes: My everyday scent is Hypnose by Lancome, it is a light and perfect for work. Euphoria is my 2nd favorite and the scent lasts longer than the Hypnose.
Raye
-
oh Tina - Shalimar, yes. I wore that for years and then one of my girlfriends told me I smelled like an old lady! I said whaaa- that is a classic scent. I eventually did switch.
-
Hey ladies,
I haven't been spending as much time here these days, but came to peek at some new tips.
I jsut wanted to comment that Raye, you are really beautiful! You look very much like Katherine Ross, an actress that I remember mostly from the 70's. And Rocktobermom, your hair looks terrific!! Oh my goodness, great job on your hair!
Lexi
p.s. I have gone back to wearing Beautiful by Estee Lauder. I didn't wear much perfume during my txs as they ddin't make my tummy feel to good. It's fun to read the different scents you all wear. It makes me want to try something different!
-
Raye, I forgot to answer you about the diffuser.
I use a T3 dryer with their diffuser. Very good. I also have a Solano salon type dryer with its diffuser but it still makes my hair move around. I guess all the machines are different.
Way before chemo I had been trying different products for my hair, which had gotten so dry and frizzy-ish. I read a book about curly hair and found that curly or wavy hair is often dry so all can use the same shampoos/conditioners, etc. I tried a few brands but am happiest with the Deva line. I use their NoPoo but many of you would probably prefer their LowPoo. The NoPoo does not suds at all and it takes some getting used to. The LowPoo suds up a little bit.
Then, I use their conditioner. They have it for both normal and color-treated hair. I also use their AnGell. It's about the best product for styling if you don't need super hold. You can buy some of this stuff on amazon but also direct from the Deva salon in NY. Shipping is not bad.
http://www.devaconcepts.com/products/
There, I hope I have not forgotten anything else.
Tina

Wow - you gals have been busy!
I'm still looking for what works for my hair. It's not exactly curly-curly, but more than wavy. I get frustrated by that bed-head or hat-head look that results from having a cowlick in the front and a double crown in the back - added to all the crazy waves. It was easier when it was an inch long.
A headband is about all I can do with it.Raye, I love the waye your hair looks clipped back/up - combined with your large eyes and luminous skin you looks positively gaw-jus in a very classy way.
Rocktober - your new color and highlighting look completely professional - you even maintained the shine! I know you must have saved a bundle. Before BC I used to just get a bit of highlighting done quarterly (no color) and that alone was a big hit to the wallet. All that money you saved means more to spend on fun stuff!
My fragrance is L'Interdit by Givenchy. The original of that name which is a major pain in the a$$ to obtain, and has been for more than ten years. http://boisdejasmin.typepad.com/_/2005/07/linterdit_by_gi.html
But if I wear anything else, my daughter says "You don't smell like my mom" and my lover says "What is that you are wearing?" I have a friend who used to sell French sailing yachts so he traveled to Paris yearly and would bring me back a bottle - but he switched to power boats. blech. I found ONE bottle of the original stuff online last year for over a hundred dollars and it's still more than half full (didn't wear it during chemo) but after that, I dunno.

I like having a signature scent. It's nice when you're away, and your scent lingers- either on a pillow, or believe it or not, the seatbelt in matt's car often smells like me. (maybe I spray too much...lol)
As far as shampoo and conditioner for curly hair-- I love all the herbal essence products. Mind you, I use one shampoo, and three conditioners. I have to wash my hair every day, or my curls get too weighed down. If I hear one more person tell me how curly my hair is below my shoulders, but how it lays flatter on the top of my head I'm gonna scream.
I stand by my hair advice, of combing through it the second you get out of the shower. Waiting even five minutes will make it frizzier.
I let it air dry for at least 30 min (depends on hair length) then flip over with a diffuser. I don't have a favorite. Any dryer that comes with a diffuser from target works for me.
I focus the diffuser when I'm flipped over at the base of the neck- to dry the underside of the hair.
Then I focus the diffuser still flipped over, at the tips of the hair, always hitting it from the backside.
Then I spray a little of my must have hairspray- Sebastian Shaper plus with humidity resistance
then let it airdry while I do my makeup. Then one last flip with the diffuser and I'm good to go.
I know it's a process, but it works for me.

Rocktobermom,
WOW! Your hair looks GREAT!! I can't believe that you colored it yourself!
What kind of haircolor do you use?? I am trying to find a new brand, but I was looking for a more 'natural' one.
WOW! I don't think MY hair will EVER grow back! It is just 3 inches long, STILL!!!
Harley -
Perfumes:
Michael Kors
Estee Lauder - bronze goddess or something like that - it was released by Tom Ford
Creed - very expensive but nice

Falling in Love - Philisophy
I have a million more but I wear these the most...
Oh wait..Beach by Bobbi Brown - LOVE IT

Self-tanner report: Just bought some of that Nivea Sun-Kissed Firming Moisturizer yesterday. It does a gradual tan. Really, the only reason I bought this specific brand is because it was the only one on the shelf in light to medium skin vs. medium to dark. Process of elimination.
Anyway, I used it this morning and had to tell you it does not stink. Yet..........
Will let you know about the gradual tan in a few days.

BTW, there is also a facial version.
-
Harley, I can be so cheap sometimes!! I got the brand that costs $2.00 on sale at Wal-Mart. The highlighting kit was a few dollars more but on sale at Wal-Mart. I think all highlighting kits are the same for me as long as they have the cap thing for your head. I can't do the paint your own on. But I have used the cap and had a friend over and pull hair thru every hole (pre-chemo) so that way I have all-over highlights. Maybe next time I can do that since I have my dd who is old enough to do it.
Regarding Perfume: I use an old perfume from long ago for my running around the house/days off ..... Charlie! Remember that commercial. I still find in Walgreens! LOL.
For night time: Chanel #5
For work: Marc Jacobs or Estee Lauder "Pleasures" or Estee Lauder "Beyond Paradise"
I also use Givenchy "Organza" but it's perfume, so when I get dressed up for work or out with the girls.
-
Does anyone else subscribe to MORE mag? It's for the 40 and over crowd. They just ran an article on looking younger, and the #1 suggestion is shiny, not sprayed hair. Looks like rocktobermom wins shiniest hair! Also, I agree on the Euphoria perfume! Fabulous. Also, for traveling, I like Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Abricot - it smells like vacation to me! Also, my husband bought me dream angels heavenly by Victoria's Secret - great for daytime as it's really light...
Also: I upgraded my picture to one with combed hair and makeup!
-
Laura, you do clean up pretty good!!
-
Wow, have I missed a bunch on here! Laura....I'm glad that you've joined us...your ideas are great and I've alreadt tried using lipcolor for blush. Only I used the rosiest one from my Clinique haul because I'll never use it on my lips. It looks great!
So has anyone checked out this website: www.totalbeauty.com ? I joined it today and almost couldn't drag myself off of it. Chock full of ideas, comments, reviews, etc. and just alotta fun!
Gonna start some self-tanning again this evening after getting my hair done. I NEED to have color for my date this weekend! I'm just so lazy though and would much rather go lay in a tanning bed...ugh!
Oh...perfume/scent...I only use an essential oil from The Body Shop. It's White Musk. I used to use a lilac scented oil from there, but its been discontinued. Every summer, I search for a new scent and never find anything quite right, so I just keep splashing on the White Musk. I'm sick of it actually. Emelee...you mentioned Beach by Bobbi Brown...is that light & summery? It sounds it.

Thanks for the hair tips, girls. I know you've sent them to me before, but I've been rather non-compliant - keeping towel on hair, not using diffuser and many other offenses. I don't have time to let it air dry, but I can use the diffuser, etc.
I bought the Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner for curly hair today - smells fabulous!
Laura - I don't subscribe to More Magazine, but at a vacation house we stayed in a couple of years ago had tons of the mags and I really enjoyed reading them. Great pic in your new avatar BTW!!
Marin - I hear ya tanning bed! I am going to try and maintain my current tan with outdoor activities fully lubed up with sunscreen and try to stay away from the melanoma bed. You will look gorgeous for your date!!
I was at Rite-Aid today, who used to carry Max Factor - but alas - no more. Trying to find that mascara you guys have been raving about.
Where on god's green earth is this stuff to be found?
Raye
-
you can only find it at walmart. I love it soooooo much. I want to go back to get the brown gold combo.
I am thinking of having a color glaze done to my hair. Its like a clear sealant coat they do at the salon, and it leaves your hair super shiny.
-
I just wanted to re-post one of my favorite finds in body products. I first talkeds about this stuff a month or two ago, and I'm telling you, the difference it has made on my skin is really incredible.
The brand is AromaFloria www.aromafloria.com
I use two muscle soak products:
the sugar salt glow body scrub- made of sugar cane, sea salt, manuka honey, eucalyptus, pepermint and lemon grass.
then the moisturizing body wash made of eucalyptus, peppermint and lemongrass.
All paraben and phlalate free.
You can find them at CVS usually hidden on the bottom shelf. They sell for a bout $10 each.
I wish I could fully describe the feeling of the body wash. The smell is so fresh, and if you're feeling sick, it's just what the doctor ordered. When you rub it down your tired calves and especially the upper arms, and you get a good lather-- then it tingles all over, and almost feels like icy/hot without the gross smell or chemicals on your body long after you get out of the shower.
The scrub is gentle, and leaves my skin super soft.
I highly recommend!!!
-
I am going to get confused with 2 Lauras ... Burns-la, can I call you Burnsie? That way we won't get confused?
