Believe me, women from the south knows manners and etiquette.  And most of us teach our children to say "yes ma'am" and "yes sir."

It's just one of those respectful things we want our children to learn when speaking with adults.  Hey, and it really helps them if they should join the military.  Just ask my husband.  He never forgot to address the "man" in charge with a "YES SIR!"  I really don't like hearing kids saying, uh-huh, or uh-uh.  At least teach them to say, yes or no.

Napkins are really great when eating barbecued ribs.  Do northerners eat ribs.  And most of us speak softly.  And leave good tips to waitresses because we know how hard they work and the pay is not the minimum pay.  I could go on an on.....

But YA'LL northerners are always welcome down here.  It's a lovely place with lovely people.  The only thing is....our city is getting too crowded...too much traffic.  But northerners love us redneck, gun toting, God-fearing, prayerful, Bible reading (not thumping), people who cling to their religion.  We even like people who do not look like us regardless what Obama things. Wink

    Shokk & Bren,

I looked at the website and I personally don't believe Obama is involved with it in anyway. It's way too easy for computer savvy folks to create a site and put anyone's name. I think the  org is "The State of the Black Nation and the Barak Obama Campaign," not two separate organizations. (I didn't knkow there was a Black Nation, but that's the oreo coming out in me.) It sounds as if these people are wanna be Black Panthers. I have to tell  you, they have a LONG way to go. And no, I'm not in the Obama camp. I'm still undecided, although I'm inching closer to Hillary every day. Now that should get a response from someone!!!!

Shirley--everything was Bush's fault.  Katrina was a national disaster and the federal government is in charge of national disasters.  Also, the federal government (the Engineering Corp) is in charge of the levees, not the local folks, and the Engineering Corp knew for years that the levees were not safe, and so did Bush.  If hurricanes devaste the south this fall, you'll all be wanting help from the feds--and so you should!

It was the same with 9/11; that was not a New York disaster, it was a national disaster.  But if anyone wanted to assign blame, it certainly could have been assigned to Giuliani, who elected to use the World Trade Center, at a cost of 60 million dollars, as disaster headquarters just a few years after it had already been bombed by another terrorist group.  And yet Americans call him a hero.  That still amazes me.  Since I've spoken of previous jobs, I'll mention another.  I worked for Verizon's Enterprise network which supplied all the backup disaster lines to the major corporations, mainly the financial ones; the head of Enterprise, against my  advice--my job was to advise--located those disaster lines at West Street, immediately across the street from the WTC, and of course they all went down with 9/11.  He did it because it saved Verizon money, and Giuliani did it because of ego, also against better advice. As far as I know Verizon was never called to task for its decision to use West Street as a backup--it was even commended for doing a good job.  Hah!.  Another CEO story for those of you who stick up for them.

Susie--just heard Chris Matthews say that Rendell is the best person to run as Veep, as he would put McCain in his place.  Since Matthews has always worshipped at McCain's feet, I think you're right.  He's looking for something from Pennsylvania.  Sure hope Pennsylvania doesn't give it to him.

    Cherry--my response.  Great.

I'd rather Hillary win than Obama.  And that's not because of color or gender. Wink  Right now I'm supporting McCain.  I'm not exactly thrilled with any of them.  But, at this point I believe McCain has been quite honest.

Anneshirley, I'm not saying the federal government should not help.  I'm just saying that you cannot blame everything on Bush.

I've heard there was supposed to be buses to take folks out of harm's way.  And the place they put these people.  What a disgrace!  Who's fault was that?  No food.  Wasn't safe.  Horrible, horrible conditions.  Had they never planned for a disaster KNOWING the levees could break.

It is absolutely unthinkable and inexcusable what these people went through.  I can say one thing though and probably no one will agree with me.  I think there should have been MANDATORY evacuation.

I hope what happened in New Orleans is a lesson we'll never forget.  And has silly as this may sound, there needs to be a way for animal rescue because many people do not want to leave their animals behind.  I wouldn't.

It makes me want to cry everytime I think of what these folks went through.  But, there's lots of blame to go around!

I don't see Giuliani as a hero.  Who I see as heroes are the men and women who were in law enforcement and rescuers.  The ones who died and are still suffering from illnesses because of all the crap they breathed in.  I can't believe that who ever was in charge would not think that the dust and other crap was harmful to them.  It's just common sense.  No excuse for it.  They should have had more respirators IN CASE of a disaster.  It angers me to think about it!

I think Chris Matthews is thinking oh s#&t she might just win and Hillary Clinton knows whom her enemies are............the media has been as bias as I have every witness it to be to the Republicans.........just a decade ago the Clinton's owned the media both National and Cable............MSNBC and CNN are in trouble and the irony of the whole thing is FOXNEWS has been the most unbiased..............it is just so strange seeing them treat the Clinton's the way they have been this last year............Bren and Cherryl I don't think Recreate68 has anything to do with the official Obama campaign.......I think it is the same stupid kids that travel around the world demonstrating "causes" like the Olympic Torch thing.......they live in their parent's basements, smoking pot, playing video games and thinking that they are important somehow........yes they are "revolutionaries" but in reality they are just unemployed misfits with nothing to do.......imo.....Shokk

Shirley, it was Hillary Clinton who insisted they should have had respirators, and was ignored.  And it was Clinton who worked hardest, with some others, to get the necessary coverage for those who suffered permanent lung damage.

And many of the fireman and policeman (but particularly firemen) who died shouldn't have.  Because so much equipment didn't work properly and there were no good diasater recovery plans in play (all attributable to the mayor), many of those men and women died unnecessarily.  Remember, when Giuliani was running that he was supported by very few firemen or policeman, and almost none supported him who had lost members of their families.  They were there and know the real truth. The media in this country puts people up and down for their own purposes and if we don't read the details, and get behind the banners, we'll continue to let them lead us, falsely.

There's always lots of blame to go around, but the federal government is in charge of such disasters, so it must get the major blame. And Bush was president (and a very bad manager) so, of course, he gets the blame.  Who else?

Just now I listened to Keith Olberman trying to promote the idea that Hillary Clinton's has a game plan to ensure that Obama doesn't win the general election so she can run and win in four years.  That's one of the ugliest things I've heard in a long time and yet he says this on national TV and others repeat it.  He is so fixated on Obama that he can no longer be viewed as a journalist.  He might as well join Obama's campaign.  It makes me sick.

And about McCain's honesty and promise to run an uplifting campaign. In the last few days, he's referred to Obama as the presidential candidate of Hamas, of Syria, and of Nicaragua.  That's also disgusting. As much as I want Hillary to win, this type of sleaze stinks.

Where is Nader hiding out these days?  Whatever one can say about him, at least he's not into sleaze.

And about Katrina and Bush's responsibility--I want to add to Anneshirley's comments. Bush was the one who put up Michael Chertoff's name to be the head of FEMA. Chertoff was like a deer caught in the headlights--don't y'all remember him saying he didn't know there were people at the sports center in New Orleans!! He didn't know they needed food, diapers, and medical help.

He didn't know how to get the people out of there. He didn't know enough about temporary housing to not purchase millions of dollars worth of trailers for people to live in that could not be used there because they didn't meet the codes for that area--flood and hurricane safety codes!! And then Bush appoints him to head up Homeland Security. Oh, hello--yes, Bush is totally responsible. See, Bush heads up the "corporation," and in the corporate world you are totally responsible for anything that anyone does on your watch. So, Bush is totally responsible. And he's never been held accountable for his miserable appointments of men who are inadequately trained to handle the jobs he assigns them--it's the Peter Principle--rising to the level of your incompetency--and Bush does amazingly well at finding those--including himself.

And I do check in every once in a while on the Republican thread to see what you Republican wanna be Democrats (at heart) are putting out there. Love to know what you guys are thinking, even if I don't agree with you.

Wow Shirley--some of them must have moved to California because there are little onclaves of these types all over the rural areas of CA. LOL

In fact a few of the adult ones threw bricks through the high school's front windows one year because they didn't like what was being taught. I think it had something to do with science and Adam & Eve--shokk's comment I believe. Luckily they are small numbers out here, otherwise us "far left liberals" would have to move elsewhere! LOL

Shokk--in all seriousness, your run-on sentences drive me crazy (among my many other jobs, I was also an English teacher). Now that Grace has opened Pandora's box, I feel I can mention it.  They are very unRepublican as well, so I believe there may be hope for you yet.

Okay, everyone, whatever your persuasion, think good thoughts for me tomorrow.  I was supposed to be going to my 50th high school reunion at 1:00--stayed in New York alone for a month for that reason, missing my husband and cats, and now I have to go to the Eye Infirmary at 10:00 tomorrow.   Doctor called me back a short while ago to say that from my description (flashing lights and floater) it may, indeed, be a torn or detached retina.  I doubt I'll feel up to going to this lunch, travelling to New Jersey, with my eyes red and dilated, if I can go at all.

And to top it off, I needed to dye my hair and I couldn't find my regular dye so picked a color that looked awfully close.  It's red, red, red (like Miranda on Sex and the City) and a few days ago I got a punk hair cut (my first cut since chemo).  I look wildly inappropriate for someone my age.

If I could, I'd blame it on Bush.  But in this case I think it's just an act of wanton meanness on the part of an uncaring universe.

And to all you Republicans on this here thread--Stick around--you keep this thread from being reduced to boring!!

I'm getting used to your.......run-on sentences.......Shokk.......well, I tried your style.........but it takes to long to type this way! LOL

Off to bake a Coconut Cream cake for my 1 year old granddaughter to play with on her birthday tomorrow. Having a party planned at local park with 16 kids and 40 adults coming--my dd likes parties in a "big" way!! Hoping the 3 bean salad and pasta salad will not impart their flavors into the cake (which has to chill in the frig)! But, it probably doesn't matter as we are hoping dgd will smash it all over herself!

See you guys on Monday--or not--if I'm as tired as I think I will be after tomorrow!

Anneshirley, I hope all is well.  I just hopped on the computer...well, not literally...I know about the floaters and a bit of the flashes....I think I said something on another thread where you posted...and my problem was vitreous detachment...still have the floaters but not as dark..I'm myopic...AND DON'T SAY IT'S BECAUSE I'M A REPUB!...LOL...let us know what the ophthalmologist says...thank goodness for spell check because every time I type ophthalmologist I have to use it....and I just did again after "copying" it up above this one...it's a hard word to type for me for some reason....and I noticed that Fox News had it spelled wrong and it was DRIVING ME NUTS!....I thought, do you want the liberals to think you're dumb or what!?...okay, I'll now go back to my regular style of typing...just wanted to make this easy for you and Grace to read...darn, I used capitals...now I'll have to retype the whole thing..NOT!  Seriously, Anneshirley, I hope everything turns out well.  You can wear sunglasses to the reunion.  And have a washable tattoo printed on your body..or...whatever to match your punk hairstyle.  You're friends will KNOW you're a fun loving liberal!  LOL  And you can get by with this in New York, right?

Anneshirley, I've also heard about the plan that Hillary wants Obama to lose.  It's just working it's way around the cable news.  I just watched Olberman's video on MSNBC with Clyburn.  Olberman said made a statement which, in my view, was rather strong.  He said something about this being "traitorous act going on."  So, he's calling Hillary a traitor to the dem party.  I'm not quite sure what Hillary has done to Obama that he can't win the general election.  EXCEPT for staying in the race.

Grace, hope your cake turns out great for your gd to waist and smash it on herself.  Can't you just give her a piece instead of the whole cake.  Man, coconut cream cake sounds to good to waist.  How about making her one cupcake?  Oh, well, it's her b'day.  But the salads sound delish.  And, I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT BEING TIRED ON MONDAY!..LOL  After being around my two grandkids I'm EXHAUSTED!  But I do love them.

Shokk, you cannot change your name.  If you do, according to Cherryl, your sentencing structure would give you away!  Surprised

Good news!  I went to Eye Hospital this morning, loved the surgeon, who did a careful look and there are no tears or detachment, other than vitreous detachment (stole the spelling from Shirley!).  I have to be careful, but in general I'm fine.  He even told me that the doctor I saw last week was a bit too negative about the sight in my right eye--he says it's not so bad.  Of course, he dilated my eyes and I could barely see for a good part of the day, which is good I guess because all my classmates looked great.  But now that I'm looking at the pictures at home, we all look old!

My reunion was great fun, but I found it sad to hear that 17 of the women I graduated with are gone.  That seems like such a large number, 17 out of 120.  Two at the reunion have had breast cancer (besides me).  I was the star of the day as everyone wanted to know about my books--I didn't start writing novels until past 60, and some brought their copies for me to sign,  I felt rather grand, and . . . and . . .got lots of compliments on my wildly red hair.  Everyone liked it, even my sisters who picked me up afterwards to take me to dinner.  I'm really happy that I went, but wish more had been there.  Only 40 attended, and some of my closer friends were not there.   My only objection:  I thought the lunch was very average at $50.00, and to drink all we had was a half glass of champagne.  Oh, well.  It was a Catholic girls school, and I guess some of them are still restrained.

Thank you all so much for your good wishes--I'm sure you made the difference.  And if anyone ever needs a retina surgeon in New York City, I have the man for you.  The nicest doctor I've met in years.

Anneshirley congratulations!  I am going to attempt to write one post without running my sentences.  You sounded so upset last night I was concern about you but I am so relieved to hear that everything work out so well.  New York City in the spring is so beautiful.  Shirley you are in the South, everyone can bring a covered dish!  Obamarama and Hillary in North Carolina, I am looking forward to the primary.  You just cannot rule Hillary out even in North Carolina.  I think Obama will be foolish if he underestimates her yet again. Ok ladies I am really having a hard time writing this post without running my sentences together.  I think since I had chemo my mind runs my thoughts together in running sentences or I could just be making excuses for my bad English skills or my laziness.  I am home now and have had my nightly inhaled steroids.  Anneshirley and Grace I am just warning you guys for future post tonight.  I will be back.  Shokk
