The Brand New Respectful Presidential Campaign Thread

Grace,
Oh, I'll vote for the democratic candidate, no matter who that is. I would never, ever vote for a republican.
And therein lies the difference between you and me. I did vote for a democrat when I felt he was a better candidate. I came here almost 30 years ago, when Regan just got elected and in my expereince so far he was the best of the bunch. Even my democratic friends voted for him the second time. And honestly if he were a democrat I would have voted for him as well after he got rid of inflation, "evil empire" and helped middle class find its footing again.
On the other hand if Carter were a Republican I would never have voted from him because he was simply inept. Look at him now meeting with the head of Hamas.
And honestly McCaine is pretty close to Democrats so it's almost like voting for a conservative Democrat here. Obama on the hand is even to the left of Kennedy.
-
I don't believe McCain can ever be compared to having another Bush in the Whitehouse. He is definitely different. I have a friend who absolutely cannot stand him. She says he sold us out...Feingold- McCain for instance. Then wasn't there the Kennedy-McCain Immigration Bill? I'm sure you've heard others. We're talking about crossing over will REAL liberals. BTW, I cannot stand Teddy boy.

And so, if you believe that about Obama, why is it you can't see that that is exactly what we have had for the past eight years--an empty suit who couldn't write a speech. What you don't seem to understand is that McCain is equated with Bush, and no matter how far he tries to pull himself away from the current president, he can't because he is a republican.
And you haven't proven anything, except that you don't realize when someone tells you they gave you a list, and have at it, you want Amy to do the work. She has told you she doesn't intend to, and to make an assumption as to why she is voting for someone is very small minded and not very open minded, as all of you have been asking her to be, and accuse her of not being.
I say we let it all just lie now. If you want to know more about Obama, or you think there is nothing to Obama, you are entitled to that opinion. And that is just what it is, an opinion. You haven't proved anything and this is not a debate. This is supposed to be a discussion. Just because you can't get Amy to do what it is that you want, that is your problem not Amy's. At least she is interested in a candidate who is young and with it, not older and out of touch with most of the Americans, as is the current president and vice-president.
You can ask your question over and over, she has given you an answer-NO. Accept that and move on!!!
I'm all for a president who can write a speech. It would be a breath of fresh air after the last 8 years.
67% of americans in this country do not approve of Bush or his Folly of War. They should be smart enough to see that to elect McCain as president would mean that the Folly of War would just continue on under another republican. People are tired of war, they are tired of the economy going to h--- in a handbasket, they are tired of paying through the nose for gas, and for jobs going overseas, and companies farming work out to companies overseas that could care less about the quality of what they produce. We currently have a commander in chief who is out of touch with America, and I for one could not tolerate another 4 years under republican tyranny. You are so right, hope is change and change is hope. That's all we have because 8 years of republicans in office has given us nothing but the continuing loss of the middle class. -
I am sure that the left of center will have a hissy fit but if it weren't for the environmentalists, the unions, and not being able to build new oil refinery's we would all be a lot better off............what I don't understand about the left is they want the unions to "protect the little guy" and make it so a butcher working for Kroger is making 27 bucks an hour and the union ends of hurting that little guy because the 1% profit margin that most grocery stores have they can't maintain his/her salary, the environmentalist that have made California have 27 different fuel combinations and keep us from building new updated refineries and keeping us from drilling for fuel in our own country which is freaking ridiculous............manufacturing jobs going overseas.....hell yes........the unions, the environmentalist, have made this country the most unfriendly country for manufacturing............to have steel manufacturer is somewhat dirty, auto manufacturers that cannot pay the hourly rates and benefits required by the unions and believe it or not there has to be some kind of profit margin or why do business and so they move their operations to other countries.......what choice do they have............yea Grace 8 years of a Republican in office has given us the lowest unemployment rates in the history of our country.......what in the heck are you talking about...........when Clinton left office the national unemployment rate was 5.7% which at the time was good............last Friday the unemployment rate was 5.1% the highest its been in the last 4 years............you go ahead and bash Bush all you want............just let Obama come in and if any of you leftist thinks that Obama is against free trade ya'll are out of your minds...........he is even smart enough to realize that 30% of this country's income is based on our trade agreements around the world and all of you left wingers are so worried about what the rest of the world thinks about us? Then go ahead and do away with NAFTA and we will just see how popular we become internationally.........someone asked my once what I thought the difference between liberals and conservatives were............I think that Liberals are ideologist and Conservatives are realists.............Liberals want the world to be perfect..........Conservatives realize that there are just to many variables and however much we all would like the world to be perfect it never can be nor will it ever be.............jmo..........Shokk

I'd vote Democratic FOR SURE if Bill Clinton was running ... I don't care about Monica or any other personal issue he had. Our country was running great back then. I'd vote for Hillary if I knew that she intended to do the same things he did.
Unfortunately for us, we won't be entering a new presidential "era" in the same situation that Bill came into. He came into it after the strong Reagonomics era. George Sr only inherited that good economy. My dad says Bill's years were the result of good planning by George Sr. I don't know the answer to that. I was not paying ANY attention back then.
I can't vote for Obama. He's too new, he doesn't have the experience necessary with world leaders and I have not seen anything that he does that another can't do.
For Hillary, I see Bill as her coach and all the power he had, she can bring that all back.
And maybe I am wrong.
What I don't like about her is her lies and the fact that she pushed Bill to lie. This is a tough one for me to swallow because I have no clue what else she may lie about.
So, I have to look at McCain. He's for lower taxes. He's tough on immigration. Tough on border control. He seems to have morals.
-
Grace, since Amy doesn't or can't answer ijl's question, perhaps you can.
What I see is anger that no one can produce one darned bill that Obama has "authored." And anger because he "misspeaks" so often. We do know he's pushed the wrong button several times when voting.
I'm looking forward to the debates between McCain and the democratic candidate (when one is finally selected).
Shirley
-
Grace,
I got news for you: presidents or presidential candidates DO NOT write their own speeches. I am surprised you don't know this. That's why there is a joke out there that we should elect Obama's speech writer since he is so good.
I also don't think you understand the nature of my question or perhaps more accurately my challenge here. I understand too well that my question cornered Amy as she cannot provide a satisfactory answer. At least she is politely evasive on this
My point was that not only Amy but even Obama's campaign staff cannot answer this .
I do not appreciate you telling me which question I can or can not ask on this forum. You don't like my postings, then ignore them and move on. We are all free to speak here as long as we not vicious and mean. And I am none of those as my question was in regards to Obama's accomplishments and not those of Amy's character. Considering that Amy has changed her user name to "Obama4President" and her last name to Hussein, I think she could very well represent his point of view.
But I guess you exhibit typical liberal behavior : trying to silence people wth a different point of view.
-
ijl, I think Huckabee wrote his own speeches. In fact I never saw him read a speech. It just came from the heart. Poor guy never had a chance.
Shirley
-
Shirley,
Huckabee used to be a preacher, so he is probably very good with speeches. Out of all candiates he was definitely the best spoken. It's actually amazing how far he came with no money and limited staff.
-
-
Grace, why do you constantly lecture people on their posts and then act out in the same manner? You may think you are above everyone else here in this discussion but you act out in the same manner as we all do.
-
I do not believe that McCain is another 4 years of Bush. That's just campaign slush that comes directly from the Dems, if we hear it long enough it becomes our mantra too. I listen to him when he's on the talk shows, and I'm impressed. As soon as a Dem is finally chosen, (will this never end) and we get down to issues with him, and get to know him better, I think some of the unhappy Dems to be, will have their eyes opened.
-
I had a feeling you'd watch the show grace. I didn't take the panel's use of the term as a negative or a positive, just that some people have more cerebral discussions and relate on a more cerebral way than others; that it's sometimes hard to have a discussion with those who aren't interested in discussing anthropological theories and make sense to those who relate in more concrete terms.
I enjoyed the whole panel, particularly the ministers and Malaik (sp) Compton-Rock (Chris Rock's wife). I love how she is working in the trenches with at risk kids from the black community, when she clearly doesn't need the money. She seems like such a great mother too.
ijl- i already know what my candidate has done for his community, for his state and for this country. I know what legislation he's worked on and I'm astonished that you assume I do not. I've done my research and am more than satisfied that Obama is the best person for the job. By the same token, I wonder why in all your research you haven't done the same.
I am like you, ijl, in that I won't vote for a democrat simply because of the party, I chose by candidate. Sometimes I vote against a candidate rather than for the person I'm voting for, if I am not satisfied with either.
I can't believe anyone would say McCain is close to a democrat. If you look at his stance on social issues like choice and gay rights, he's almost as bad as can be. If you look on who he would appoint for the supreme court, he's almost bad as they come. Just because he's not the most conservative he could be-- does not mean he's like a democrat. To me McCain is in many ways as bad as Bush when it comes to wanting to continue the war against public opinion, wanting to keep the the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy etc. This is the first time in memory that there have been tax cuts during a time of war.
I love Ted Kennedy for his service to this country. He has been through so much in his life and made his share of mistakes, but there are few people in America that have done more for the underserved and marginalized people living here.
I am sure that the left of center will have a hissy fit but if it weren't for the environmentalists, the unions, and not being able to build new oil refinery's we would all be a lot better off
I agree that some people would be better off in that scenario, but certainly not all people and not the planet. I am pro union in cases like for miners and people who work in industries where they need unions to ensure their safety rights. I am anti union when they strong arm their employers to get benefits and wages that are out of touch with the market, business interests, etc. I agree with you about butcher's from krogers not needing to make $27dollars an hour-- that goes directly to the price of groceries and that seems to me, unreasonable for the job at hand. Environmentally, we need to do more and different things and initially that will cost money. I am not that informed on enviromental laws, but I hope that companies who participate in green technologies get tax credits and incentives.
Shirley, Obama has done his fair share in congress. I'd rather have a candidate that sometimes says something that is politically incorrect than one who is entirely scripted the way Hillary is. He's human. He tells the truth and doesn't make up sniper fire instead of kisses from an 8 year old girl. I am sorry for you and others who cannot see what he brings to the table and hope that you are at least open to seeing what he does instead of simply the negatives that faux magnifies and exploits. Maybe you think this happens "often" because when he says something that can be misinterpretted, faux runs the story all day, analyzes it in the worst possible way and stays on the story until something else comes up. I wish you could see the hope his candidacy brings to so many of us.
Ijl, unlike most candidates, Obama writes most of his speeches, if you weren't previously aware of this.
RM- how do you think those pictures advance your candidates issues and bring the conversation forward. Bill has done more to take Hillary's campaign than she has, in my opinion. He just can't stay out of the spotlight.
Paulette- I'm curious whether you're posting about the campaign or about me and Grace sometimes.
-
Strange thing happened the other day, hope was diminished. Just poof, gone away. Instead we find ourselves all immersed in a campaign of he said, she said, politics as usual from both sides, and no it is not just one-sided attacks. Annie Oakley get your gun type of mockery doesn't work for me.
When they all can sit down and talk about the issues and give us real details of their plans, the better we all will be. Right now, it's still a personality contest between the two of them and McCain gets to look marvellous.
-
Amy, when I address you personally, you will know that I am posting to you directly, unless your name is Grace, my question was to Grace. And I think the question is clear it does not need further clarification.
-
Meow.
-
Yes, I know Huckabee used be a minister. He's probably more IN TOUCH with people than all the other candidates. However, we knew he would never be THE candidates for the repubs. People would be way to afraid of him.
Shirley
-
Amy, if you ever watched Fox News you would find that it's not all negatives toward Obama. There's been some very nice things said about him. There's been some "bad" things said about McCain. You really need to watch, Amy. I'm surprised that you and others cannot see that Fox News is fair and balanced. Watch, Amy. Watch for a whole day. I dare you.
I find absolutely no inspiration from Obama. In fact the longer I listen to him the more I'm turned off. It's all empty words. Promises, promises. I want to hear the truth. One truth we know about him is that he is completely out of touch with people who embrace their faith, who like to hunt, and who are all for legal immigration.
As far as Hillary, she's being a hyprocrit when she talks about how she was taught to shoot a gun at a young age. She's trying to appeal to the gun owners after Obama made his gaffe. She's against the 2nd Ammendment. I won't provide links...gotta get ready for the LE therapist.
I'm looking for someone to please be honest. I see that more and more in McCain everyday. You may not like what you hear, but I haven't caught him in lie after lie. Hopefully when the dem candidate is chosen and he is more in the spot light he will continue being honest and be a straight talker. Only one can hope!
Shirley
-
Amy ,
Forgive me but it sounds rather childish.
I know what legislation he's worked on and I'm astonished that you assume I do not. I've done my research and am more than satisfied that Obama is the best person for the job. By the same token, I wonder why in all your research you haven't done the same.
You spend so much time defending Obama here and posting positive things about him, and yet you cannot be bothered with posting the legislations he is credited with ? One does not even need Phd to see that you don't have this information, otherwise we would all be seeing this. I've done my research and could not find any Obama's bills. Since you cannot dispute this statement with any factual data, I will conclude that indeed Obama did not autor any bills while in Senate.
I think this pretty much concludes our debate on this subject.
-
I have been following this thread for quite some time and find it interesting. When someone is promoting a particular candidate, it seems like it would be a good idea to show specifics as to why that candidate is your choice. That's what I am looking for in a political discussion. I would like to know what makes you choose that person, if someone is asking for evidence as to what legislation a candidate was responsible for, it should come from the person who is promoting that candidate. Just my own opinion, one of many on this thread.
-
Amy if you really read anybodies post, you'd see that someone commented on his changing stance and someone commented on his being an empty suit. I don't care what you think I bring to the conversation whether my comments have to do with forwarding the conversation, making it go sideways or upside down. And who made you the topic moderator?
-
HEHEHE
I think the Dems. are showing us exactly what they will bring to the
White House just like they did to the Senate....
"Nothing but PROMISES THA THEY NEVER WOULD DO"
When the "Enemy" tells the US to vote for Dems. I RUN>>>>>>>>
and I am not a republican nor a Dem.

Shirley-- if I could handle watching fox for a whole day, I would take you up on that. I actually do watch the network, mostly on the weekends when I have a block of time to catch up on the different station's campaign coverage. When I hear some awful comments-- and I don't just mean about Barack, but about human beings I change the channel, no matter what station-- even if it's said about one of yours like Rush or Bill O'. People don't need to be called freaks, degenerate or less than human by news commentators or talk show hosts. Even though I don't support the "pregnant man", for example, I don't think demeaning him on the air is appropriate. I know that there are serious and less serious journalists on all of the stations, but somewhere along the line this line has been blurred on the cable news stations that it's almost not there any more. If I'm going to listen to someone who's biased, it's much more enjoyable to do so with someone I agree with. If you could point out a show on fox or certain commentators who are fair and not anti-democrats or Obama I'd watch.
-
Puppy, you and I disagree on who "the enemy" is. To me, Bush has been more of an enemy to the world in total than just about anyone else on the planet. Sure, he used fear to justify his actions, but if it walks like a duck and it talks like a duck... it's a duck.
RM- People don't always read all the posts, but you can't help seeing an image as you scroll through the threads. That's the difference.
-
I just watched Foxnews and Mccaine is suggesting suspending gas tax to help Americans with the cost. I just suggested this here yesterday. I did not know his staff was reading this board
But joking aside I do think this is a really good step we can take immediately to ease the pain at the pump. I beleive the tax is about 60c or so. Let's see what White House and Congress will say about it.
-
Right now I am in favor of anything to relieve the pressure of the high price of gas. I live in a fairly rural community and it is really hard on the people here. When people can't afford to go places it hurts other businesses like restaurants, which is how my husband earns a living. I seriously believe the high gas prices are one of the main things hurting our economy right now.
-
Rocktobermom: I'm actually a supporter of Obama (though I'm starting to become a little turned away of late) but still thought your comics were funny.
Sheri: I think the only way gas prices are going to go down is if the demand goes down. I'm sorry it's hurting your business. I think you're right though; it's difficult to justify a dinner out after spending over $50.00 filling my tank.
I've been following the debate about which news channel gives the most unbiased information and just realized that I don't watch ANY of them. I get all my news on the internet from a variety of websites (including this one, lol!) I really like all the different points of view; it's helping me become a lot more informed!
-
I have no problem with the gas tax as long as the money from it is used for what it is suppose to be used for...our infrastructure. MN just increased the gas tax and while I hate the thought of even more money at the pump, somebody has to pay for bridges that won't fall down.
Maybe the oil companies can lower their profit margin just a tad instead.
Bugs
-
Well, Amy, if you don't read all the posts, then don't ask me to explain mine. Anyway, I won't bother explaining any of them to you since you now informed us that you don't read all the way thru. I didn't think the cartoons would be over your PhD intellect.
-
This regarding Hillary ...... from salon.com. ....... interesting to read, actually the whole article was interesting. It also talked about how hard it would be to work for her. She'd have to have beta males instead of alpha males!
-----
The compulsive war-room mentality of both Clintons is neurosis writ large. The White House should not be a banging, rocking washer perpetually stuck on spin cycle. Many Democrats, including myself, have come to doubt whether Hillary has any core values or even a stable sense of identity. With her outlandish fibbing and naive self-puffery, her erratic day-to-day changes of tone and message, her glassy, fixed smiles, and her leaden and embarrassingly unpresidential jokes about pop culture, she has started to seem like one of those manic, seductively vampiric patients in trashy old Hollywood hospital flicks like "The Snake Pit." How anyone could confuse Hillary's sourly cynical, male-bashing megalomania with authentic feminism is beyond me.
