To all that have received an afghan/hugaghan - when you see the box you just get so emotional and it is as if you can feel the love that has gone into the squares and putting them together.  I know, as I was lucky enough to get one too - believe me lately, I've needed the hugs and love.

Ok, which one of you is going to be brave enough to take some squares by someone who is learning but doing better.  I have quite a few and need to get them on their way. Let me know and I'll try to get them in the mail this week before I leave for Va.

Brenda, I think squares that look like they are done by someone just learning would be even more special - they are symbolic for perserverance!

Ok, had to check my spelling, and came across the definition - it sounds like survivors!  From Dictionary.com: steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., esp. in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

Which is not to say you are having THAT hard of a time making the squares! LOL....it doesn't sound like a compliment anymore.  I'll shut up now.

Nancy, you made me laugh!  I had a purpose but it was definitely filled with

difficulties and discouragement.  I took it to my Mom's the other Sunday afternoon and she looked at me and says "how on earth are you holding your crochet hook".  That tell you anything.

I told her it worked for me - how did the square look.  Told me - look good, stitches look good - "but I could never hold my hook that way and crochet."

It has been fun and I have truly enjoyed making them.  I hope they can be useful.  I love the ones that some of my sisters do that have fancy patterns.  Don't think that will happen until I take a class - hopefully soon. Do you think the instructor will not like my way of holding the hook either?

    Love you guys(oops gals),   Brenda

Brenda, I learned to crochet from my left handed mother who learned from her right handed mother and people don't know how I can crochet holding my hook the way I do, under the palm and not like holding a pencil. I just tell them that my German grandmother taught my mother who taught me. We all sat across from each other and did with our dominate hand what they did with their dominate hand as looking in a mirror. Though I do better with the lace work now than with the yarn and larger hook.

Sheila -I am planning on taking a class at AC Moore's in Hickory and I'm thinking I will drive the instructor nuts the way I hold my hook.  In fact, I need to call today and see when the next one is - they cancelled the last one.

I see we both are "Foothill gals".   Brenda

Brenda, I sent you a pm about my location in the Foothills region of NC. I have been crocheting since 1971 when I had spine surgery for scolosis. I had to do something to keep me busy while recouperating flat on my back for 3 months. I spoke with my mom about this afghan project and she said that she will donate yarn that she has accumulated from various projects for the squares. She is working on hand quilting now and not crocheting as much. I go back and forth between hand quilting and crocheting. It depends on what bag I grab as I am walking out the door as to what project I will be working on that day.

    What a cute dragonfly!!

Quick question:  Should we wash the squares before sending them to you?

No need to wash the squares prior to sending them.  We wash the afghans before we send them out.

Neesie - that's great!  Yep I agreed to work part-time for awhile for my former bosses.  One of them had a heart attack early this morning so I'm here for the day. I'll be working a bit more than part-time now I think.

Phone is ringing....... I'll be working on squares at night.

    Hugs

I can't knit in front of my mom - she always asks what the heck I'm doing with the right needle.  I have to let go of it to wrap the yarn for some reason.  I've gotten to be a fairly quick knitter this way and it feels too awkward to do knit the "right" way.

My mom might be doing some squares for us as well, so that will be fun to send them in with mine.  She's got mad skills as the kids say!  She has made tons of sweaters over the years as well as socks and afghans.  She has given everything away - I think she's only kept one sweater for herself.

Did anyone see Ace of Cakes on Food Network - they made a fantastic cake - it was a basket with yarn complete with little sweaters, scarves, etc. coming out of it for a woman's 90th birthday.  The woman was so cute - she couldn't stop looking at it!

The last time I said I was a happy hooker, my husband looked at me like I was crazy and then laughed. He told me not to use that term in mixed company. Oh-by the way, we were fishing with small children in the area.

I started out holding my hook like a pencil and then switched to an overhand grip.

I've always loved the terms "happy hooker" and "stitch n' bitch." Laughing

My friend got her Hugagan today!  She will be getting online today or possibly tomorrow, so I'll let her tell you about it.  I just want to say that the pictures don't do the afghans justice - this afghan was so much more beautiful in person.

And the card that was sent with it was wonderful, too.  We all teared up as it was read out loud by another co-worker.  It was so beautifully written, and it meant so much to us to have this amazing woman hear those words.

I want to send my own thank you to everyone who is a part of this project.  Most of you will not be able to be there to see the box being opened, so let me tell you that it's every bit as wonderful as you imagine - the afghan is a tangible thing that represents our virtual community, and to see it being wrapped around someone's shoulders is one of "those" moments where you know the love is as much for the givers as it is for the receivers.   So you all should give yourselves a hug tonight....there's plenty of warm wishes to go around.

I am a crocheter.  I just finished a square that I think is perfect!!! Finally.  LOL.  How about you?  Do you knit or crochet.  I don't know what a kniftyknitter is.

Oh dear, the first squares I tried by the directions and they came close to 7X9.  So I tried Madison's idea of making a template and thought I really had it going on.  Last night I measured the first chain against the template and it looked right.  After a few rows I put it back against the template and it was way too long.  Does it grow instead of shrink as you go?  I am so spastic.......
