I wasn't sure where to put this.

Just received a notice from my insurance company that they have denied payment for the oncotype test from last August.  Geez, took them 6 months to deny?

I think it is around 3600.  Usually I am on top of these things, but I could have sworn that "somebody" told me the oncotype would be covered. Now I do not remember if it was the surgeon's office or the hospital or the insurance company or maybe it was the group running the TailorX study.

Not sure, but not happy about the bill and probably will not pay it immediately or in installments.

Has anybody had this experience?  Any advice?

Sorry you got hit with this bill!  When I first visited the medical oncologist, he said I was a perfect fit for the TAILORx study and while no treatments or drugs would be free or discounted to participants, the Oncotype test would be covered if the insurance refused to pay.  My results came in, I decided to stick with the study and when I rec'd my EOB from the insurance company, it had been denied.

Now, what you need to do is to at least try and dispute it.  I would call and get a case manager.  I assume you based your decision on whether or not to do chemo on this test?  Be ready to argue this.

    Good luck....Trina

Also, when I spoke to the oncotype company people when I was deciding what to do, they told me that they would help with appealing a denial of benefits decision.  You should call the company.  There should have been someone there assigned to your case.

Also -- a statement from your insurance company saying benefits were denied is NOT a bill!

Because insurance companies have time limits on appeals, you probably want to make sure you WON'T be billed -- but it's quite possible the Oncotype people don't plan on billing you -- they just tried to get money from the insurance company.

I agree with Tina -- call the company.

Are you in the TailoRx trial?

Thanks for all the good help.  I did not want to do chemo as it was not recommended.  I called the study lady and she said I was still in the study anyway, so ??? on that one.

You are right, it is not a bill, just Genomic ? trying to get their cost.  It should be covered for people though.  Kind of stinks.

I will see the surgeon on Monday.  That is where the whole TailorX thing started.  I could ask her, because I thought it was she or her office that told me not to worry about the oncotype cost.  It would be great if she knew.

    Thanks for easing my mind.

You should also point out to your insurance company just how much money they saved by avoiding chemotherapy for you. My estimates are each chemotherapy session, including meds and neulasta shots, costs at least $10,000, maybe even as much as $20,000!

I mentioned it to the surgeon.  She said she would contact her Oncotype rep. Maybe they will drop it.  I never did receive a bill.

Bliz, if your score was 10 or less, you would be in the study with no chemo.

It was 20 and chemo was not recommended.  The concern was insurance rejected coverage.  I am pretty sure the surgeon's office originally told me not to worry about paying for it.  That oncotype would handle if insurance wouldnt pay.  I never received a bill.

Does anyone know if insurance generally pays for genetic testing and the tamoxifen metabolism test?  After having my oncotype testing rejected, I am naturally cautious.  I will follow up with insurance, but wanted to see what was the norm first.

Surgeon said she would contact her oncotype rep about the oncotype fee.  I never received a bill, so maybe it is already taken care of.

    Hi Bliz!

I have not yet had the CYP450 2D6 blood test, but have seen a number of threads devoted to it in the "hormone therapy" section of the boards. It did seem that coverage was split about 50/50. I know that some people have paid for the test on their own at places like DNA direct.

Roche pharmaceuticals created the test. It is called the "Roche AmpliChip Cytochrome P450 test".  I have seen online documents from Cigna and BCBS indicating that they will not cover the test because it is "experimental". The BCBS document was a couple of years old, but the Cigna document is from June 2007.

Many insurance companies offer subscribers a "case manager". This is a person--usually a nurse--that is assigned to your case and can answer questions for you and sometimes even advocate for coverage in special circumstances. If this is an option with your plan, you may want to consider signing up because they can be quite helpful.

    Hi Bliz,

United Healthcare covered my CYP 2D6 test on the first go-round.

    Good luck,

    Ann

When I talked to the oncotype office before bringing it up to the onco first meeting, they said they appeal it if it's denied.  I believe I was told if insurance did NOT cover it in the end, they would, but I'm not 100% sure on that, so check with them.

Thanks for the help ladies.  I've been playing phone tag with the insurance company.  I will ask for a case manager, if they are not inclined to pay for the metabolizing test and the test for the breast cancer gene. Does anyone know how much each of these cost?

I get the impression the Oncotype company may not come back at me for the bill.  I have yet to receive one from them.

Talked to the hospital and insurance today.  Just for others to know.  The BrCa (?) test for the bc gene is about $3000 in my area in the Mid west.  The hospital will take my blood next week, but check with insurance for coverage before processing.  The Cyp2D6 is around $355.

The insurance lady finally called back and is working on adjusting the Oncotype bill and says there will be some coverage.  She said the genetic test should be covered as well as the CYP2D6.  She was actually very nice.  I was prepared for a battle but it wasn't needed.

Bliz, I know where you are coming from with insurance. After my bilat mast with recon, I got a letter stating that they would not pay for the alloderm because it was considered investigational for reconstruction. My PS helped me with my appeals, he has used it for over 5 yrs successfully. Finally after 7 months it came before the external review board and the PS who reviewed all the documments sent in by myself and my insurance agreed with my PS and approved the Alloderm. the insurance had to adjust the bills and pay the PS and the hospital for the alloderm.

Keep fighting to get your rights.

And it is good to know that sometimes it is just a silly or clerical reason it got initially denied.  Apparently the oncotype facility was "out of network".  Well, duh, yeah!  Isn't there only one place that does it?

So when they checked further they realized what happened. Now it does go before some "out of network" review, but hopefully I am on the right track.

The lady was really nice.  I was prepared to throw it all at her if I had to.  Wasn't necessary at this time and might have actually hurt me, if I had come out 'a blazing'  Sometimes difficult to know when to go to bitch mode. Cool
