So you ladies liked my 9 x 7 huh?  Neesie, I made my sister teach me yesterday but I hurt so bad - who says knitting is relaxing - ha - they haven't tried to work with my stitches or whatever you call them.  I think I got better after she told me to quit making them so tight because then it would go faster because  it would be bigger since it wasn't so tightly knit.  Whatever, I got 1 done.  Now I have to work on #2.

Margaret, just adding my two cents and maybe someone did already.  Did anyone ever tell you to cast on with the next size bigger needle and then swap it out after the first row is knitted?  My mom taught that and I never get the stitiches too tight, well almost never.

Vickie, my friend Marge is making squares too.  She has no project going and lots of leftover yarns.  I told her to crochet 9 x 7 and then I will give her your addy to send it.  Seems like I never to get to the P.O. anymore (hence your package is late for the holidays).  When I am up to driving more it will get out to you and Nate.

I don't think it matters but the experts will tell you. It's great that you are doing the rectangles! It's so addicting!

Beth, no one said anything about that - I'll have to try that - course, that means that I need more knitting needles. I'll have time this weekend to try some more.

Vickie, Liz, and Madison, you do such great work putting these togethers.

Neesie, I can't post pics here anymore and I haven't had time to figure out why.

All the hugaghans are beautiful!  Each one is so unique, like it was made special for a sister in need..............

I feel like goldielocks and the three bears here.  I've been KK again.....trying a couple new stitches.  So Now I've got a few that are 'to loose', a few that are 'to thick' and some that are the 'same' as before!  I'll send them all so I can get an opinion......but looks like I'll stick with the tried and true method!

    Hugs,

    Neesie

Nessie,  I love your squares...........I have been "hording" your squares so I can include at least one in each afghan....I think I have only 1 left because I am in the process of completing another afghan.

I have a crochetting question... looking at all the beautiful squares, I am wondering how to change colors without tying a knot and it showing? any ideas? I am up to 5 or 4 a day...Look out!!

Hi Cherryl! Yes...I think I "remember" you. I'm doing good - how about you? Yes, it's fun making squares (or rectangles).

Liz - I sent you a box today! Please let me know if I should make any adjustments for future ones...I am still a beginner, and I have thick skin...LOL so feel free to make suggestions, etc.

I forgot to count how many I sent...

I think a 7wx9 has a slight advantage of a 9wx7...there's a smaller number of the dreaded first row (the one into the chain).  Maybe it's just me...but I hate that darn first row! LOL

Lori - when I change colors, I tie the new yarn to the old and clip off the excess.  Not sure if that's the proper way or not but it works for me.

Laura - can't wait to get your squares.  I know, I hate that first row also.  LOL

To make a striped square, you can crochet two rows and then don't cut the first color (A), instead of wrapping it around your hook, just pull up a loop of the second color (B).  The crochet two rows of color B and pick color A back up.  The unused color just stays flat against the edge of the square.  I will try and find a link to some photos tonight...it is hard to explain but easy to do.

If you want bigger areas of color, and you don't wnat ot carry the unsued color along the edge, just stop at the end of a row like you would above, pick up your new color the same way and then cut both tails of unsued yarn about 3 inches long.  Leave them until you are done with your piece and then weave the ends in.

I'll try and find links to some video or photos.  It is really easy to do, but I bet I lost you :)  It is hard to describe!

LORI>I tie a tight knot in my yarn when I change colors and weave the ends back in to the same color yarn after I'm done with the rectangle. I don't remember if I was taught that by someone or if I just automatically do it.

LAURA>That first row can be hard either the yarn you change to might make a difference in width despite using the same chain amount or its hard to hang on to barely nothing doing that first row into the chain. I'm playing with the broomstick lace pattern right now and thats a challenge using a knitting needle and a crochet hook at the same time! Plus I"m doing it in a very tight smaller size than the broomstick handle...

At least its easy to pull out thost first couple of rows and start over if ya need to. I always check it against my 7x9 cardboard to see if I'm heading the right way with size.

Laura,  I have been crocheting for YEARS and I still HATE the "first row"..........

Jan, I also have a 7x9 cardboard that I measure each square I make against.......

Laura, I drop the yarn of the color I am using.............then hook the new yarn on (leaving an inch to weave in)...............cut the old yarn about 2 inches from the square and weave in this yarn.........

I am a good weaver innerSmile so if you don't weave your ends in I'll do it.   When we put the black border on the squares we "lock in" all the loose yarn.

There also are a number of crochet websites that have instructions that may help.
