We awoke to a beautiful Winter Wonderland this morning, a special New Year's gift, just like the one we got the last weekend before Christmas.

We should have skiied today, but I didn't because I had just a little bit of a sore throat coming on..so we took a long walk instead.  It is beautiful outside!!!

Dottie, I am very impressed with all your gusto...work hard, play hard...drink off that workout!!!  Hope you're recovering...

Casey...really, we'd like to see MORE of you...these ultra-brief updates just aren't doin it!!

Puppy, Raye how are we doing?  OK?  Puppy you sounded really good earlier today.  Sounded like you already consider yourself a former smoker.  How is Ed doing?

    My resolutions:

    1.  Get rid of those last ten pounds if it is the last thing I do, using self-hypnosis techniques.

    2.  Add at least 2-3 strength/weight training sessions to my weekly aerobic workout regieme.

    3.  Stay away from processed foods, eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.

    4.  Reduce drinking from the current quota of about 7 drinks per week to about five or fewr...it would be really fun to go a month without drinking at all!!!

    5.  Spend more time in the studio and less time on the computer.

    6.  Stay out of melodramas.

    7.  Convert to an entirely non-Microsoft environment.

    8.  Simplify and declutter my life, by reducing my material needs and getting rid of everything I don't need.

OK Mary, Tina, Jasmine, everybody else, where's your list?  (Puppy & Raye...quitting smoking is ENOUGH for any year).

Still waiting to hear from Carol....

We never did get too far cutting fire wood.  We decided it was too cold, damp, windy. He had a hangover and I had a belly ache (This body just can't digest fat like it used to.  A bacon cheeseburger and onion rings in one sitting was just too much.) so we put oil and windshield washer fluid in the vehicles, took the dog for a walk, brought in some wood and watched an amazing (albeit violent) movie called Eastern Promise.

Tonight I made pork fajitas with tomatillo salsa and keeping with the holiday spirit I made an apple tart (definitely not low fat) that was just about the prettiest thing I ever baked.  I made a lattice and then decorated the lattice with flowers made of dough.  It tasted as good as it looked.

It sounds like everyone had a decent holiday.

    Raye and Puppy,

Glad to read that you're cleaning out the lungs.

    Raye,

I hope you enjoy your home gym. Having the opportunity to work out at anytime is convenient.

    Dottie,

I'm impressed! 90 minutes is phenomenal.  If I did 30 minutes of abs I wouldn't be able to move the next day. I hope your ankle is doing better.  Remember RICE; rest, ice, compression and elevation.

    Ok Mizzy,

    Here are my resolutions:

    1.  Get my passport renewed.

    2.  Commit to a volunteer experience in Central or South America.

    3.  Remember how precious life felt after my diagnosis so that I can

stop being obsessive-compulsive about the little things and

remember that wants and needs are two distinctly different

         things.

    4.  Be a little more spontaneous and a little less linear.

    5.  Keep up with my spanish lessons.

    Mizzy,

I'm good about decluttering so if you need an extra set of hands or an opinion......

Actually having said that, my MIL is determined to clutter up my life with stuff.......

    Mary,

I ran last week for the first time in two months.  I lasted a very painful mile and a half.  Too much time on the bike, not enough pounding the pavement.  My SIL sent me a singlet from the Charlottesville Womens Four Miler (A BC fundraising event for UVA) and I am going to do it next year.

    Hi Tina and Jasmine!

Tomorrow Barry is heading out and I will get back on track with my training. Ultimately he is great for my head and soul but lousy for my waisteline (and thighs... I found fat on the outside of them this morning)

    Have a good evening

    Good Morning Ladies,

Thanks for the encouragement on the not smoking - fortunately, I have not been smoking heavily, so giving it up was not too difficult; This is day 8 without a cig for me. The bad part about it is, it is soo easy to just have one here and there because I can give it up, just not completely Embarassed...MizSissy, you are so right - it's that ONE cigarette (or one puff for that matter) that we have to avoid. One leads to two, and so on.

MizSissy- your resolutions sound terrific. I too, need to declutter my clothes closet. I am pretty good about the other stuff, but tend to keep some clothes. Other than my no smoking resolution, I am also going to:

    1. Drink less soda and more water

    2. Work out more frequently and add strength training and ab work to my routine.

Puppy, how is the not smoking going for you? Are you doing ok? If you want to pm me if you need some support, please do so. Just remember, you can do this. I saw the post about the prescription drug - was that for Zyban or something? I ask, as when I was a BIT younger, I smoked about 1/2 pack per day and used Zyban to quit - it did work for a long time - then I succumbed to the old gross habit again.

Dottie - your 90-minute work out is impressive. wow! I wouldn't be able to stand upright after such a workout. Good for you.

Casey - good to hear from you!!! I like your resolution about being more spontaneous - I need to do that as well and wanted to after I was done with chemo, but wasn't ready yet. I still like to stay home and read a book and if someone asks me to do something, I sometimes just want to be alone - "can we do it next week" I say - not too spontaneous. I am still working on that one. Also, love you resolution about continuing your lessons en Espanol. How is the Rosetta Stone software? Is that what you are using? Also, now that you mention you found some fat (which made me laugh BTW), I did too this morning as I was putting on my lotion, ugh. oh well, we'll get it off in a couple of weeks, right?

Carol, hope you are doing well. We are all thinking about you.

My health resolutions for the new year:

    1) Lose 5 pounds and ring in 2009 with it still gone

    2) Exercise more

    3) Drink more water

    4) Drink less soda

I've never smoked so I don't have to worry with that addiction but I have drank soda just about all my life.  I used to get up and have a coke, get to work and have a coke,  another coke mid-morning to stay perking and to not fall asleep in boring meetings, coke for lunch, afternoon coke to beat those afternoon droops, coke at home to relax and watch TV.  I am addicted to soda.  Yesterday, I went the whole day without having one soda.  I'm working on today.

Raye and Pup  -- keep going.  If you fell off the resolution, today is a new day, just get right up and start again.

Good Morning, Good Morning...what a beautiful morning it is.  I wish you could see the lovely white snow outside my window, covering everything just as soft and virginal as it was yesterday, but glittering in sunlight!!!

This is gonna be a great year, I can just feel it!!!

So nice to hear from all of you, especially you Casey, you know we worry about you...but it's clear we don't have to worry much.  Love your resolutions..the idea of going to South or Central America sounds so fascinating.  It will probably change your life.  At one point in my life, I was actually planning on spending a year in Brazil to do cultural research.  But  ( chickened out (actually, I met Erik...).

That reminds me, we need to get our passports renewed, not that we could really afford to go anywhere with the dollar as worthless as it is these days!!

Raye...Day 8, we are so proud!!!  What a wonderful inspiration you'll be to Puppy.  Puppy, where ARE you?

Jasmine, good luck with your resolution on less soda.  Have you been drinking soda with SUGAR?!   Fluid is good for you.  What does water taste like out of your faucet?  Hope you don't have to buy it!!

Dottie..I am very impressed with that 90 minute workout.  The only time I get a really good workout like that is when I ski the Bravo trail (in a park near here) and then it's because I don't have any choice, because I won't get back to the parking lot otherwise...

I got my idea about decluttering...from a thread Tina had either started or contributed too..she's got a lot of good ideas.  BTW, where are you??

    Gotta go find Puppy!!!

Checking in when I should be working.  New Year's resolution is to work more and surf less!

Someone else started a resolution thread and I will tell you basically what I said there.  I'm too fallible for big resolutions so I can only plan on keeping clutter off the dining room table, doing my bank statements monthly and signing myself up for some nice massages.

I guess I should add losing 10 pounds. Eek!  I've only had a (big) bowl of cereal with ff milk, a HUGE mug of coffee with one sugar and some lt. cream, three little prunes and a mouthful of Polish ham swiped from the fridge so far today.  It is only 11 AM.  My lunch salad is waiting for me.  Greens, chopped tomato, red pepper, radish and about an ounce of feta.  Will drizzle with olive oil.  Am I good, or what?

Yes, I started the de-cluttering thread.  Actually, a thread to "make do with less," meaning less furniture and wardrobe, too.  I have entirely too much.  Come on over (in Moving Beyond).

    Tina, you're golden!!!

I've had one small bowl of oatmeal so far, but I woke up late!!  Not hungry for anything else yet.  But let me tell you a secret:  Femara is fabulous for losing weight.  It speeds up your metabolism, gets things moving very fast in your gut, and the hot flashes help burn calories!!!  I guess your body gets a male metabolism when you lose all that estrogen!!

Well, I talked to Puppy this AM...she's doing very well on not smoking, but she's feeling AWFUL...irritable, bad mood and mentally splintered.  She's entering the rough spot now and she needs help...but Sweetie, you're gonna do it!! For yourself and for us and for Ed!!!  Just think about how important it is for him that you do this...!!!

Hang in there Puppy...it's bad but it's ONLY a few days, and then your over the hump...

    Tina and Jasmine, welcome!

    MizSissy, another beautiful photo!

Puppy and Raye, good luck with quitting the cigs.  I'm an ex-smoker and have quit several times, but the last time was in 1991, and I think that one stuck!

    My New Year's Resolutions:

    1.  Savor every second with my kids.

    2.  Go to yoga twice a week during my lunch break.  (The class is right here in my office building!)

    3.  See more movies.

    4.  Keep working out and eating right.

    5.  Travel more. (Already got passports for the kids!)

    6.  Have abs of steel.

    Happy New Year, everyone!

    Carol- still thinking of you...

    Good morning spa women,

Are you accepting new members? I've enjoyed reading your postings and this seems like just what I need right now. I had my last chemo on 10/6/07 and finished radiation on 12/18/07. I've always been a healthy eater/exerciser but the research on weight contro/ and exercise boosting survival has taken my motivation to a whole new level. I've been doing pretty well on my own. No weight gain during chemo and down 14 pounds since I was diagnosed in May 07. Still being part of a group like this would be a nice support and more fun. Sounds like you are posting New Year's resolutions- are you still keeping stats? Anything else I should know? Allyson

Allyson -- even though you don't have an overweight issue, I found that I lost alot of muscle tone and muscle strength during treatment.  I think you could still benefit by exercising just to strengthen that area and build bone density.  Welcome, I'm fairly new as well.

Miz -- in my 20's and early 30's the sodas were sugar sodas but I switched to diet after that.  The water in my faucet taste horrible but I have a Brita water pitcher that helps alot.  I buy the bottled water to take in my car when I have to be out driving.

Oatmeal sure does sound good for a morning like this.  I'm going to have to get some when I go to the store.

Funny, but going into menopause and losing estrogen didn't give me a male metabolism.  It gave me my grandmother's metabolism.  :(

I've been fighting my grandmother's metabolism all my life, and my mother's! I was a bit overweight at the time I was diagnosed, 143 and I am 5'4". I might not sound so bad but my body fat % was 30+. Now I am 129 pounds and about 26% body fat. My goal is to get down to the bottom of the healthy weight range for my height between 116-120. Thankfully I've done well with the instant menopause. I'm, sure people think I'm nuts having almost nothing but positive things to say about it. For me it was perimenopause (was in this even prior to chemo) that was the killer. Now that I'm over the hump my mood is better and all the people in my life are suddenly nice instead of irritating. Also loving the increased tolerance for the cold- it's coming in handy today! We have awesome water from our well so I don't need to buy it. I'm a water and tea drinker so this is a big help. Hi Allyson,

Nice to have you here!!!  You have the same attitude we all do...why not make this little interruption in our lives meaningful by using it an incentive to get ourselves in shape!  Congratulations on finishing chemo and rads...you must still be feeling a bit tired out, so you might want to work in gradually.

Jasmine (Always Hope) is absolutely right about need to build up your muscle tone.  I am a runner and was able to continue during the first half of chemo, but radiation really knocked all the pizzazz out of me.  But I worked back in gradually, going half as far and building back up, and that made me feel a lot better, but I find I still need much more sleep than I used.

And congratulations on the weight loss!!  Now that's a nice little perq...do you know that you and I are the same height and the same weight and have the same goals!!! Tongue out  Comon, let's do it together.  BTW, what flavor of anti-hormonal are you doing?  I am finding that Femara is actually a help.

Here is a link to our original stat page that I used to update for everybody.  However, we now have a private page on Google so I don't have to do the updating.  PM me your email and I will send you an invitation to join the group.

Busy day today and not time to do much posting...but I want you to know that I've been in touch with Puppy and she is still doing fine on NOT smoking.  OK, she had a few puffs the second day, but all smoking materials have been removed from the house as of today.

She is feeling so bitchy and grumpy she doesn't want to sign on, but I told her we're all routing for her.  She was taking out all her energy on her house, washing windows, cleaning, getting all that smokey smell out.  And for WV...that was a terrific win last night, wasn't it...in spite of the loss of your coach.  Well, you know what I think Puppy, UM may have paid alot of money for him but when they get him they're gonna find out it was the WV team, not the coach, that's on the winning side.  As you can probably tell, I'm no fan of UM.

I quit smoking on the 5-day plan, and as I remember Days 3 and 4 were pretty hard, but by Day 5 you're practically home...

         HOORAY PUPPY...YOU'RE ALMOST THERE!!!

Hope you made it to your doctors' appt!!!!

Thanks for the welcome. I am a little tired from all that radiation. Still, much better than I was two weeks ago. Like you, Mizsissy, I am taking Femara. It's been about 3 months now. I started it just before radiation and have been happy with it- very minimal side effects and feel good about the choice since my bc was strongly er/pr+. I have been a runner for a good part of my adult life but not so much in the last couple of years due to some injuries. I am just starting to test my left knee out again with some easy jogging mixed into my daily walk. One of the things that helped me get through chemo with relative ease is that I did not miss one day of walking a minimum of 2 miles. The advice from Jasmine re: muscle building is well taken. I have lost a lot of upper body strength, partly from going easy on my left arm, and need to build back up. Congratulations to Puppy re: the smoke free days. I had been non-smoker for years after a tough quit when I was 27, then lapsed into on and off closet smoking for what ended up being 4 years. It was hell to quit but luckily I was off the cigs for close to 9 months when the breast cancer diagnosis came along. I had my last drink of alcohol the day I got my full pathology report, by that time I had read up enough to understand that drinking may have contributed to my cancer and the interaction of alcohol and estrogen production. I'm living quite the life of purity here. Who would've thought!

    Hi Allyson!

More power to you for giving up the alcohol. I know I should but I love my wine...., and my gin...., and my tequila.......Wink

    Welcome aboard.

I agree with the need to strengthen.  It has been a little over one year since my exchange and I have not worked way enough on rebuilding my upper body.  I am happy to say that I have performed an upper body strengthening program 5x in the last 12 days.  What is most shocking to me is not that I can't lift much weight but at how quickly my muscles fatigue. This will not do if I expect to catch a lot of fish with the DH.

    Mizzy,

I too have found that menopause and, in my case, Reloxifene, have not caused a gain in weight and all those hot flashes may indeed be helping to keep me in bikini shape. Nevertheless, for me, I still (but less so) grieve the loss of that part of my life.  Initially menopause created a significant loss of libido, then it was the yeast infection from hell and finally, my libido seems to be coming back into it's own and that ROCKS!

    PUPPY!!!!!!!!!

WVU gave the 'dear' former coach the proverbial finger last night!!!!! Sometimes winning is the best revenge. WVU showed Rodriguez what teamwork means!

    Puppy,

Glad to hear that the smoking cessation is proceding in the right direction. Your lungs would kiss you if they could and your cilia are doing the wave.

    Mary,

I like your resolutions.  Particularly going to the movies.  Any recommendations?

Tonight I did a lazy cardio workout on the recumbant bike. To the left of me was a patient whose right foot kept falling off the peddle so I kept slowing down to put her foot back on it and to the right of me was a friend and we were catching up.... I still managed to sweat.

Now it's time for "Hablas espanol?

Si, hablo un poco de espanol.

    Buenas noches.

    Hola amigas!!!

Hello Allyson! Glad to have you here.

As Jasmine mentioned, I too lost a ton of muscle tone as I was not running (uh, I'm really still not running like I want to!); I am thin (maybe 119) but not solid - skinny/chubby Wink.

I too gave up my almost nightly Molsons/Bud Selects/Mic Ultras - which I would love to have after a nice run. I still drink beer, but only every few weeks.

Puppy, keep plucking away girl, you're doing wonderfully! As Mizsissy says, each day will get easier. Think of the waving cilia (good one Casey!)

Mary and Cathy - GREAT resolutions. Mary, good for you on quitting the cigs - 1991? Yeah, I'd say you're done. Nice job.

It is almost two weeks for me (well 11 days)- but tonight will be a test - going out with some girlfriends - two who are social smokers and quite easy to bum a cig from. We'll see how it goes.

Tomorrow dh and I are going to the RV show in Cleveland and I may do some painting on Sunday if the couch and book doesn't suck me in.

Allyson, I am so proud of you for quitting alcohol too.  That was my resolution, and I didn't drink at all when I started chemo, but I had so much going on my life besides chemo and so much stress with chemo, the nurses practically begged me to go home and have a glass of wine.  Then it was all downhill...anyway, we're on a 3-day a week non-drinking plan, so that's some improvement.

Puppy is still hanging in there, and she's doing it for us...Puppy, we are so proud of you and you know we all love you so much, so think about us and your poor cilia today, and realize how happy you're making us!!

Yeah, I am hearing you Puppy - my Spanish is rusty, very rusty.

Cilia are the little hairs in your lungs that filter when you breathe in. When one smokes, the smoking kills these cilia off, but they can be regenerated (this is from college science of health and nutrition, so I may not be entirely accurate in my definition).

haha, no my dear - no cigs.  I only hope I can do it tonight. You are doing great!!!

    Hi All!

Raye, I love the new avatar. You are gorgeous!

Casey, I'm going to see Juno this weekend because teen pregnancy is HEElarious! My last two movies were with my kids- The Golden Compass (the most interesting thing there was Nicole Kidman's face botoxed into porcelain) and Enchanted which was enchanting and McDreamy. And as far as my libido- it came back once I got through with chemo. YEAH!!!

Puppy, Don't let that skinny little tube of paper and poison overpower you. You can do it! It will get easier every day!

I've been doing weights for my upper body. Do any of you with implants find your implants look worse when your chest muscles are toned? I think I looked better with flabby pecs.

Went to the dermatologist for my hair. She says Rogaine.

Cathy, did you see any snow flurries?

I am going to try to go for a run every day for the next three days. I'm impressed with your mile and a half, Casey. I am only making it about half a mile before I have to switch to walking.

Wish you all a great weekend.

Hola.  Si Allyson, Yo estudiante de espaniol con Coffee Break Spanish. I love Mark and Kara!  I have not been as diligent as I ought to be and find myself stuck on lessons 11 through 13.  I haven't listened to them in (ack!) two weeks but as I will be stuck in the car for a bit tomorrow I will get back in the habit of listening while I drive. I purchased the additional materials up to lesson 40 and I find the written lessons a good way to drive home the podcast. I have also been using the Rosetta Stone Spain Spanish and almost feel confidente enougth to move on to lesson 2.

You look beautious as always! I hope you and the DH have a great time at the RV show.  I've never been to a big RV show but a few years back Barry and I were looking at some and , heck, some of those 5th wheels were almost as big as my house!

    Mary,

I hear that Juno is wonderful.

I've not seen the Golden Compass but would like to because Daniel Craig is my McDreamy.Wink

    Puppy,

I'm jealous; a log splitter. That is so cool.  We usually rent one once a year and split all our wood in a marathon session.  I love watching a knotted piece of wood get cleaved open by a wedge under hydraulic pressure. (I know, I'm entertained easily.)  It sure beats the &(#@ out of an axe or maul. Nevertheles it's still a good workout moving all that wood around.  I much prefer getting my strength training through that type of activity.

    Happy New Year Cathy,

I must have been scribbling my lengthy missive whle you were being straight to the point. Good luck with the resolutions.

It looks like everyone is doing so well starting out this new year.  Keep up the good work.

I've been soda free since Wednesday except for falling off the soda wagon twice.  Its not as bad as I thought it would be.

Yay! Puppy, keep going.  And congratulations on the new baby.

I love coming to this thread and reading all the great things you guys are doing for yourselves. Puppy- awesome that you are on day 5 of your quit. Hope it is getting a little easier. It will, although there are always those moments when you have to look out. Congratulations also on the wood splitter. We got one last year and it's been great, although it lacks the charm of the old fashioned axe method. There's only so much we can handle with the other work we have around here.

Mizsissy- I did pm you my e-mail. Don't know if you got it. If not let me know and I'll send it again.

Acgw- Yo soy una estudiate de Coffee Break Spanish tambien. Mark y Kara son muy amables. Mi gusto mucho. I'm behind too. I'd started a while ago and was up to lesson 25. I'm going to start my catch up this week.

Always Hope- Excellent with the soda. People don't realize sometimes how hard that one can be to quit. Like me giving up wine :)

Yesterday I walked the dogs for 20 minutes then jogged/power walked for 15 on my own (our older dog is too pokey). My knee does not hurt this morning so that's a good sign. The fact that I am still recovering from the radiation is a good control against me overdoing it.

I am going to try to add a photo to go with my name today. I hope you all will not be too startled when you see that I look like Barack Obama. Allyson
