Does anyone have any tattooes?

Yes, mittmott, it's all connected. In other words, that entire quadrant of your body is at risk for arm or breast/chest (or side, or back) lymphedema. Having lymphedema myself, I can tell you it's not worth the risk. But since everyone makes their own compromises with their lymphedema risk, I can at least suggest that if you decide to have a tattoo anywhere in that area, you ask one of your doctors for a round of prophylactic antibiotics to prevent infection.
Be well!

Thanks Binney, that's what I figured, so it's no go. Not worth it for something so silly.....Randi

Brenda...Where is that tattoo..your back or your ankle? It's beautiful! Maybe you should stick to the flower theme for your next one? My first 2 were flowers...the rose and the magnolia. I've seen some nice fairy designs too, though I think I'd be chicken to get one (might change my mind down the road). My daughter just got her first tattoo on her upper arm...are ya ready? It's Squirrel Nutkin! We used to have the Beatrix Potter series and read about Squirrel Nutkin all the time!
evilelf....I so wish that you could post pics of your molar tattoos. I absolutely cannot envision them! Or maybe you're just kidding? I am known among my friends as the most gullible person ever!

Hi Marin,
The picture is condensed. The tat is actually spread across my lower back. I thought about staying with the morning glory theme and incorporating the pink ribbon up on my left shoulder. I also want to change the colors in the leaves on the one on my lower back. Maybe I'll get it done on my one year anniversary!

I don't personally have a tattoo but am looking forward to my areolas
. My husband got a tattoo this year for me on his upper arm. It is a pink ribbon with 2007 on the ribbon, my name over the top and my wife my hero underneath. He hated needles and said that I faced my fears this year, he would face his fear of needles. He said that it was the first and last tattoo he would get. It was good that I was with him when he got it, he would have spelled my name wrong!

I decided to get a pink ribbon tattoo. I was diagnosed with DCIS / have gone through mast and implant recont. My mother also had a bc diagnosis and had mast with tram flap recon. Unfortuantely we have a strong family hx. My tattoo is a deep pink with some black tribal elements to it. It's on my wrist. I want people to be aware of breast cancer and that it is an evil disease, that's why I incorporated the black.I just had it done last week Thursday. I am also thinking about having either a star or flower tattooed on my areola. I haven't done traditonal tattooing on it.

I want one, can't decide.
-
I looked at cafepress.com and then linked to some other sites. I took a design that I liked and had the tattoo artist change the design to exactly what I was wanting. Most of the tattoo artisits are very good with designs and drawing, so if you have some idea of what you may want they can probably draw something up for you.
-
The one my husband got, the artist sketched right in front of us. He asked if he could see my pink ribbon pin and used that to draw the dimentions and shadows of the main body of the tattoo then used word to put the letters on in a beautiful handscript font. It was totally original. Another husband of the support group asked if he could borrow the design and do one for his wife.

After I finished treatment, I got a beautiful cross on my back shoulder that is all done in pink to symbolize that the Lord has healed me from breast cancer.
Previous to cancer, I got an small alien, which I designed on my hip because I am facinated with aliens and I have an ankle bracelet on my right ankle.

Felicia,
I LOVE your idea! My husband studies Ishinryu. I don't think I spelled that right! He has his brown belt. Since my diagnosis, the karate has taken a back seat. He hasn't gone in a month with me being newly diagnosed and trying to make this a great Christmas for our 2 kids.
Again-Love you idea. Please send me a photo when you get it.

lvtwoglt,
Thats is really beautiful! I am so glad you have a great man to support you. I totally took mine forgranted. My husband has totally swiped me off my feet with how supporting and loving he has been through all this. I love him dearly.

OK, here are mine..........
The picture didn't come out so good. I got the moon & sun done a week after my lumpectomy - I thought that even though I always had darkness following me, the light was not to far behind. The sunflower is just because I like them - by the way, yellow is a hard color to tattoo. The far right is called Mother Ocean - its a profile of a womens face surrounded by water. I got it because I love the ocean.
No pink ribbons for me, maybe I'll get an angel next, they are addicting.

I have one, its on my left breast (the good one) and I got it when I was about 19. It's a phoenix. At the time I got it because I liked the way it looked. Now...it seems very fitting.

Wow... I didn't know that having a tattoo can put you at risk for lymphedema. Do the docs tell you that? My ps said I could have tattoing for aereolas in 2-3 months( just got nipples 6 days ago) but didn't say anything about lymphedema.
-
Everyones tattooes look awesome! I wish I could post mine. I'm not really sure how, and I'm having some trouble with my card reader. Maybe I'll figure it out soon.
Lynne

Valerie, how long did it take them to do yours? That's a big a#* tattoo! It looks amazing.

Ilenee, I study Goju, which is a close cousin of Ishinryu. I started karate during rads (not the best time to start, I know, but is seemed like a good idea at the time, lol) and have only stopped for surgical healing (the IGAP was the longest), but understand the need to be away from the dojo when life gets the upper hand. I am also a brown belt (2nd kyu) - and will send a photo of the tattoo I'm planning once I get it done.
Livesstrong, your tattoos are GORGEOUS!! -
Lucindarae, that sounds really cool- let me know if you do.
-
hi
marin your tattoo looks alot like my sisters.
i have a ugly one on my ankle.
i want to have it done over well make it look alot better. i just have to find the time.
it will be a wooden cross with roses.
-
Valerie, that tattoo is spectacular!
PS. this is my 500th post...WOW! who'd have thought...
-
I agree with everyone, Valerie....gorgeous tattoo/s! Will also add that you have one awesome back too! I think backs are so sexy, don't you? And I'll bet it took about 3-4 hours to get them done..? My lower back took a little over 2 hours. It was sorta funny too...I sat cross-legged on a raised table so he could work on it easier and everytime he hit the edges of the design in a certain way, it triggered a nerve reflex and my leg reflexively kicked
I'm really trying to resist getting another tattoo, but this thread isn't helping any! I am tempted to do something like what a woman who served on the Komen Survivor's Committee with me had....it was a grapevine, with actual grapes, tumbling down her chest and onto the top of her breast. It was in green and purple and she's African American, so the effect against her skin is stunning! She wore little tank tops during the summer and WOW!!

Its a ways off before I will be ready to get my 'Survivor' Tattoo. (need to get all my Surgeries done for one thing! Including my Heart Surgery)
But I already have planned out what I will get.
On March 7th I was diagnosed with bc. On May 7th I was told I had a Hole in my Heart (a PFO & ASA).
So My Design will be of a Heart with a Hole in the Middle & The Pink Ribbon Lacing Around one side of the heart & through the Hole also.
It will be my 1st Tattoo

Just got my first on the back of my right shoulder about 2 months ago when vacationing in Key West. This pic was taken immediately afterward, so it's still red and swollen, and the artist had just put some ointment on it so it's real shiny! I always knew I wanted palm trees at sunset, just didn't know where. I love it, but BF Mark was not so pleased. I told him he could either get over it or "move on" 'cause the tat wasn't going anywhere! He's finally coming around....but let me say it did hurt! It was $140, which I don't know if that's expensive or not because I hadn't priced them before I got this one. It was a very clean, professional-looking studio, and the guy did it in about 5 minutes.

ALMOST makes me want to get one
I've always wanted a few little ladybugs going across one foot. Thought that would be cute. I did get my belly button pierced but I had to take it out for surgery and I had only had it for 6 months! I was soooooooooo mad about that! I'm getting it repierced after I heal and lose the last of my pregnancy weight.
My sister has several. Her first was The Cat in the Hat on her ankle. My favorite of hers is two little bare baby feet on the top of her foot. Very cute!
-
I do! I do! I have 23 and all can be hidden under my clothes, if I need to. The one on my avatar is the one I got three years ago for my sisters and I. I have one around my ankle of a lotus and my kids' names, ones for my grand-daughters, one for the baby I lost, one for a very dear friend who died of brain Cancer, several butterflies, a dragon, and one that says "Proud Mother of a US Marine." That one I got for my son when he graduated from boot camp...we were tattooed together!
I tell everyone that these are the only things I get to take with me when I die, so they all have special meanings to me. They are my personal art work. My next one will be a BC ribbon with pink boxing gloves hanging from it. I want it to say, "Fighting for my life" and both of the dates I was diagnosed...
