Hi,
I am seriously considering getting a tattoo.I have some scars (4) from my cancer. I would just like to put something pretty on my body that signifies a new beginning.I have an excellent prognosis and I am about to begin radiation.
Does anyone have any tattoos? I am sure there are some of you out there! I would love to hear your stories of what you got and why!

I have a 3" pink ribbon on my left (non-BC) shoulder and a black tattoo of the Chinese character for 'hope' below and to the left of my belly button. I got the first one right after rads and the second one right after I brought home my daughter.

I have several pink ribbon tattoos. They're bright pink. I've gotten them to signify certain cancer survivor milestones. My pink ribbons are on my left and right ankles, left (non cancer) wrist, ring finger on my left hand, and on each of my ear lobes like earrings. I didn't have reconstruction after my bilateral mastectomy and I was going to get 2 pink ribbons where my breasts were, but it seems like a bit of a waste since no one else will see them unless I being intimate or lift my shirt to show them.
Let us know what you decide.
When I got my first one I said to the guy, "I'm NOT a tattoo kind of person."
He told me, "That's what they all say and they come back again and again."
"Not me I said," and of course, he was right.

I have a large chinese symbol for happiness in the center of my back.
-
I have a bridge above my left ankle. I got it on the second anniversary of my diagnosis and it represents passage to a safe place and an ongoing journey that is varied. it means a lot to me and I love it.

I felt the same way. I wanted to mark myself as a fighter when I found out I had BC. The feeling was kind of contagious... my sister, husband, nephew and Dad (not pictured) all got tattoos. My daughter designed the symbol... a stone ankh (Egyptian symbol of eternal life) wrapped in a pink ribbon. The tattoo doesn't cover the scars on my chest but then those are symbols too I suppose.

One of my favorite topics- tattoos! I have 3 and actually got them before bc. My shoulder one was a small magnolia, but it was on the bc side and got fried by rads, so I went back to the artist and he designed around it and made it bigger and better! My first one is a tiny rose on my right pelvic bone. And the real beauty in on my lower back (I know, some fresh guys call it a "tramp stamp"
!)...it's a black, tribal butterfly and I adore it!
If you want some good ideas, Ilene, try here http://www.tattoojohnny.com/ and type in the keywords "pink ribbon" or whatever you might like-they have some nice bc-themed designs!

I am thinking of getting a daisy. I have always loved daisies. They mean love and lust. I guess I can interrupt that as lust for life which I have always had. And love well, you just cant go wrong with that.Do I have to wait till after radiation?

Beautiful Marin.

i have 2, a pink ribbon as the l in the word life and a celtic cross with a pink ribbon wrapped around it. I want one more for my 3 year annniversary, but can't decide what yet. I think I'll get one each year.

Love the pics of tatoos...I have two and I got them both before BC...One is a large purple tribal sunburst on my lower back (so I always have the warmth of the sun at my back) Marin...I hate it when they call those lower back tats tramp stamps! Mine is in the same spot as yours, and I do not think either of us is a tramp!!!
The other is a band around my upper right arm. It is a three stranded braid in tones of blue bounded by two barsj in tones of green. I designed this one myself and it symbolizes my family...the three children as the three intertwined strands in blue (water=life) and the two bars are me and my husband who bind them together and help them find their way.
I have not gotten any more, but I have been thinking about getting a third to commemorate my BC journey. I was thinking a butterfly to symbolize transformation and rebirth.

Last summer, after going through a difficult biopsy (my fourth), I got a bird on my right shoulder. I had wanted one for a long time, but figured after what I had been through, the pain from a tattoo would be a breeze. PinkribbonAmy, I suspect that I may give in to my desires again, too. Once you realize what it feels like and how little the pain is compared to other pains, it is easy to consider one.

I have a total of 10 if you include the 2 on my molars
-
OK, I know I'm being waaaaay dense, but what do you mean "2 on my molars," evilelf? I thought you were going to say something about your rads tats, but your molars????? Please explain...anyone?

I just have my eyebrows, too chicken to do another, but I considered a daisy instead of areola.
-
I have a seagull .... Jonathan Livingston that is ... on my left wrist. I had it done with my husband who has the same on his forearm. We each have the book on our shelf...mine in English, his in Italian. We got these when we decided to marry six years ago.....The courage to Be...the courage to soar.
-
I'd say that's a joke. Molars don't take tattoos very well.
-
Twink, those tattoos are so special.
-
Thanks Amy...Hey, I'm near Philly too!
-
besides my nipples, i have 3... the first was a rose on my left hip, the 2nd a daisy on the top of my right foot and the third is a butterfly, whose body is a pink ribbon on the inside of my left wrist, my cancer side.

I'm thinking of getting a pink ribbon on my shoulder. I want to wait until after I test for shodan in karate and have it wrapped with a black belt to signify the two journeys that sort of started at the same time. I'm kinda chicken though as I'm rather bony and am scared the shoulder will be painful. Maybe the puffy part of my back/lat would be better. I've got a year or so to figure it out, though...
-
I covered my mast scar with 3 roses , one for each of my boys, and also have a PINKSTOCK ribbon...

Oh Dotti...You reminded me that I, too, have my eyebrows tattooed too. So I guess, altogether, I have eight tattoos...3 "recreational," 3 from rads and my 2 eyebrows!!!
Felicia...The shoulder does kind of hurt, at least the back of the shoulder. It's less painful to get tattoos on muscle rather than bone and, of course, fat is best. All of mine are on bones and it wasn't fun...but they were worth it!

I thought about getting a pink ribbon tattoo instead of a nipple. What do you think? I'm a 5 year survivor. Had mastectomy and reconstruction all in same surgery.
-
I have 2 tatoos from about 10 years ago. A lady bug with dots...... around one ankle and the other is a bumble bee with dots.... around the other ankle. I was going to get a sunflower on my shoulder, but can we do that now on our shoulders if we've had nodes removed. I had ten, and axillary disection, and only one from the other side. We can't draw blood or do anything to the arms, so I'm wondering about the shoulder, isn't that all connected?
-
Well, I did have four tattoos from rads but those were removed by laser.
OTOH, I DO have pierced ears!

I got this one on my 50th b-day.
Just turned 52 and want another one on my left shoulder ...
just can't decide what to get.
PS - I'm not counting the little blue rad dot tattoos.
They look like little blue freckles!!
-
I just got my first one last month (besides the rads ones). I got a pink ribbon on my ankle during our trip to Vegas. I want to add to each year. Maybe a heart around it and then the word "survivor" at some point.

That's a beautiful tattoo BinVA. As for the rad tats, you'd think they could make them brown...
