Gad, my hair growth has been SO slow.... I finished chemo in January and haven't yet gotten my first cut. My hair is now about an inch long and there doesn't seem to be enough to cut yet, but I sure wish there was something to style. The idea of using a man's styling 'stuff' sounds great. I'll try that.
Still, in the last 2-3 weeks, it seems to finally be filling out a bit and today I notice I finally see hair instead of head.... -
katielou2, I believe it's okay to mention product names; you just cannot advertise, promote or solicit on behalf of a product, which means you cannot have a material interest in the product. Lots of gals have mentioned brand names here, whether they be bras, makeup or laxatives.
So, what did you use that worked?
Moving right along, my hair started showing itself at about week six after last A/C. Now it's just past week 11 and the hair on the top of my dome is at least an inch long and fluffy. I have a wicked cowlick which is threatening to curl! The sides and back have variable length but it is closer to the head, flatter, than up top. ??? I guess I have seen this in other people's photos of re-growth. My question is, this being week 11 on August 6, do I have any hope of having normal looking short hair by mid-October? Any thoughts on this?

Hi, I have been using a Redken product called "Rewind". My hairdresser recommended it. I had tried a sculpting gel before but it wasn't strong enough to hold my then-crewcut-length hair!
I love that it makes your hair look a little bit wet but not drenched. It's a sticky paste that you rub in your hands and then tousle all through your hair. You can arrange your hair any which way. It is just so cool! If you don't like how it looks, put a little more on (or just get your hands wet) and do it again.....I think that's where the "rewind" name comes from.
I'm almost 7 months out of chemo and have had my hair cut at least 3 times, if that helps you calculate your growth at all. 5 months after chemo, I had enough hair that people said I looked "stylish" and "chic" with my short cut.
One thing I did, not sure if it really made a difference, but when my hair was coming in, I told my children that if they rubbed my head it would help my hair grow faster. They loved the idea and would rub every chance they had! Maybe that did the trick for me.
As for my hair, after years of having it long, I may stick with my short do!

Thanks for the product info. I'll definitely get some in anticipation of having enough hair soon to actually style.
I am loving having no hair on my neck this summer. It's so much cooler, I cannot believe it! Like you, I'm planning on keeping my style short from now on. Unless, of course, I change my mind. Am not about to give up my womanly prerogatives.......
I've been taking a Biotin supplement on rec of these boards. I can't say if it is working or not. Pre-chemo I had very thick hair that grew like a weed. I was told it would go back to its old ways once it started growing back in. Whenever I had my hair cut in layers or short, I had to have it trimmed every three weeks in order to keep it in shape and under control.
Right now, the hair seems to be coming in pretty fast. If it continues this way, I won't know if it's because of normal growth patterns or the Biotin. At any rate, the Biotin can't hurt.
If I had the nerve, I would have DH take a picture and post it here, but I don't have the nerve. Well, not yet, anyway.
Thanks for all the support.

Help! I have a duck's *ss on top of my head!!!
LOL Don't have a picture. Maybe I will have DH take one tonight because you WOULD NOT believe the perky little point on my dome.
FitChick, I know you said these swirls do go away, but when? Right now, the sides are laying pretty flat, if somewhat curly, but the top it growing skyward! Arghhhhh! Well, I suppose that when it gets to a certain length/weight, it will fall over on its own. In the meantime, I want/need it to start looking reasonably normal for a mid-October trip. Woe is me.

Oh Tina, I had a duck's a$$ too and it stuck around for about 2 weeks. You're right...growth is what tames it. In the meantime, just get the strongest product you can (like the stuff the punkers use to make their mohawks stand up) and do your best to control it. Or see it as awesome & funky and enjoy! It's hair after all!!!!

Yesterday was my one year anniversary of my last chemo. My hair is actually close to the picture but has more wave and curl still. It has calmed down a lot in the last few months.
There is hope.

I had my last chemo one year ago (sept. '06) and just went for my second haircut last week and lost all my curls with this one!.....I was really liking my curls (never had them before) and am a little sad that they are gone and I think maybe even sadder than when I lost all my hair! Weird? And I'm wondering if anyone else felt this way when their curls were finally gone?
-
5graces,
I have not had a haircut yet and I keep telling people I will never get one again. My hair will have to fall out again for me to lose any.
All kidding aside, my hair is finally calming down and becoming more my old hair. I did not like the chemo curl much, was not able to spike my hair or make it look like a style any normal person would want to have. Sometimes I do actually think of going for a hair cut just to see if it could be shaped or cleaned up a bit but I doubt I will because I really DO NOT want to mess with the length.

I loved reading all the info. on products and how people are dealing with the hair. I am in the peach fuzz place right now. I swear it does multiply overnight. I loved looking at the pictures posted of hair growth. This is such a great resource for all of us. I hope to be able to tell of a duck's a** soon!=) my kids do love rubbing "the fuzz". I'll tell them to keep it up for good luck.

Hi...
It has been THREE weeks since my last chemo, and I am hoping to see some real growth soon. I have some hairs that are growing out and sticking out... ha ha ha!, but no real growth yet. It has started turning darker, which is good, but there is still predominantly white hair there....
How much longer will I have to wait for hair to start growing??
I am using Nioxin now, and will really try in earnest to grow some hair after my reconstructive surgery, which is next week, Wed., Nov. 7th!!
Please tell me I'll have some real hair soon! My dh keeps rubbing it and he kisses my head sometimes. I STILL LOOK LIKE SLUGGO!

It's been 1 year 2 months since last chemo....and my hair is so curly....I dare not comb it or it will be frizz! If I pull the curl out in the back near my hairline....it comes about 1 inch below my shoulder. And when I let go......BAM.......it springs back into ringlets and shrinks 2 inches.
Love,
Terry -
Here is my hair growth four months after last chemo.

Hi Harley, im a newcomer. I was diagnosed on 4-27, masectomy on 5-4. I finished chemo on 9-11 (AC&T). Now im gettin herceptin & hormone therapy. Ive been using Nioxin since my hair fell out. I think it works. Now its a dark peach fuzz. I refused to wear a wig because it was not me. My hair is growing everyday. I have to shave my legs again lol. We are all sluggos lol. My kids rub my head too. They are my greatest works of art. I will pray for your surgery on the 7th. God Bless
-
hi louanth,
My mast. was on May 2nd. I was dx'd on March 20th, after bx on March 15th. Did you have a single mast? I had a bi-lateral mast., because it will make my reconstruction easier.
I was afraid to use vitamins or Nioxin until AFTER my chemo was finished. So now, 3 weeks post chemo, I have started the Nioxin, and will really start using it (and the vitamin enriched scalp treatment) after my surgery.
Yes, the hair on my legs has grown, too, and I had to shave the other day. Just not much on the top of my head yet! I told my dh that I look like Sluggo from the old comics, Nancy & Sluggo, so that is what he calls me now. LOL
Thanks for the prayers! They really DO help!God Bless,
Harley
