Mangosteen juice
Just wondering if anyone is using mangosteen juice as an alternative cancer treatment. What have your experiences been good or bad? If good where are you purchasing the juice from.

I hope someone answers, Wendy. I've never heard of it...is it made of some extract from mangoes?

Never tried the Mangosteen juice but did take Noni juice for about six months and also Gogi juce for about 2 months (not concurrently). I did not notice any difference on either product. Good luck if you try it.

Marin - it's actually made from a fruit called mangosteen that is native to southeast Asia. A women in my cancer center who has lymphoma told me that she swears it is keeping her in remission. I did a little research on it and apparently it is just chuck full of antioxidants. The ACS even had an article about it stating that research needed to be done to see if it could be benefical for cancer patients. Of course there are all sorts of stories out there - 'testimonials" - praising the use of the juice - I'm not one to buy into "miracle cures" but I thought I would give this a shot, at least for a little while. I'm stage 4 with mets to my liver and while they appear stable for now, they are still there. The juice also has other claims of helping with inflammation, acne - all the other things that antioxidants are praised at helping. Arimidex gives me lots of joint pain and I also have Roseaca. So while I in no way expect this to "cure" me - I figured I'd give it a whirl and see if it is beneficial for the rosacea, the joint pain, and maybe even the cancer. I have never done anything like this at all - I usually need pure scientific proof that something will work - no herbal suppliments or anything - but this appears to just basically be juice - so I figured what the heck - I'll try it for a few months and see how it goes! So I ordered some yesterday - and I'll get more scans in 2 months - so I'll keep you posted!

Someone told me about Mangosteen juice so I asked my naturophathic physician about it. She said she'd heard of it and said it was a very expensive way of getting anti-oxidants and recommended something else that cost $14 for a three-month supply.

This lady wrote a paper on it last year, but there's no reading it without paying for the honor.
What are the facts and myths about Mangosteen?

Wendy...I'll be interested to hear if you feel any difference after drinking it for awhile and if your inflammations ease somewhat. Of course, if you have clear scans, I think we'll all run out and get some! Let us know too how it tastes....

OK! I have to chime in here. Im done with treatment. 2 years out now. My DH got some Mangostein juice cause I have been getting alot of colds. About one every 6 weeks. So I drink a shot of it a day and believe it or not it made my hair thicker. $40 bucks a bottle! I dont have much faith in it as a treatment for cancer, but it should has helped boost my immune system.

I read an article about mangostein juice only last week in a health magazine. Apparently, most of the antioxidents are in the skin of the fruit and the skin is really bitter. So they often mix the juice with other fruit juices to make it more palitable. I ate a fresh mangostein a few years ago and the flesh is absolutely delicious - very fragrant and sweet.

Dear All - It is October 7, 2007 and I want you to know that I drink XanGo's mangosteen juice. I have had almost 30 years of severe, daily migraine headaches and a pain level of 8 to 9 from arthritis in my neck - all from a car accident in the early 80's. I was introduced to XanGo in August of 2006 and started drinking it. THREE DAYS later, my migraines started to go away and my pain level dropped significantly. Today, I get migraines 3% of the time, down from 100% and my pain level is about a 2 or 3. Minimal compared to where I was a year ago.
Now, over the years, I have tried all kinds of treatments (biofeedback, traction, massage therapy, chiropractic, acupressure, acupuncture, raki, heat/cold treatments, special diets, every type of medicine known to man - I even tried hypnosis!). And, let me tell you - I would have eaten dirt if someone would have said it would help with the migraines and pain. I have also seen neurosurgeons, md's, chiropractors, and probably a few shamans just to get rid of the migraines. I have had x-rays, cat scans, mri's. I have been to three different Cleveland Clinic Hospitals. They couldn't find anything wrong with me - some even suggested it was in my head!!! Of course it is, you idiots, that's why I'm here - to get help!!!!! I was ready to go to a doctor who cuts - yes CUTS - your nerves so that you don't feel anything anymore. My pain care specialist told me that they can't sew your nerves back together again, so it probably wouldn't be a good idea to do that - thank God I didn't do it.
I have a full time job, 7 grandchildren and I also design, make and sell jewelry. So, I tried to never let the illness get me down. But guess what? It did! I made my whole family miserable because they saw what I was going through.
The treatments that finally enabled me to work and quasi-funtion consisted of six kinds of medicines (all with really bad side effects) and trigger point injections with an anesthetic called marcaine every 4 - 6 weeks. They hurt like the dickens, but numbed my neck and back so I couldn't feel anything for about 2 weeks. So there I was, thousands and thousands of dollars down the drain, unable to work or function normally, sick to death of feeling so miserable and a friend told me about the mangosteen juice. So I tried it. I am now OFF OF ALL SIX MEDICATIONS!!! And, I haven't seen my pain care specialist since February (although he also started drinking the mangosteen juice because he could see the difference in my muscles in my neck and back).
What a difference. Everyone I see tells me how wonderful I look (I just turned 58 and look 10 years younger). My skin is clearer, my eyes are brighter, my pain is practically gone as are my migraines. I get up earlier, stay up longer and have great energy all day long.
I now am a distributor and I believe whole-heartedly in this product. I have personally seen several people who have been helped by this product. Just to name a few, my husband's sugar levels have dropped dramatically, and it helps him sleep better, my father has neuropathy in his back and legs (nerves destroyed from type II diabetes) and he has less pain and more energy. His second wife has macular degeneration and when she recently saw her opthamologist, he said her vision was vastly improved.
I know that it sounds crazy that a juice could help with your illness, but why not give it a try? I call it my miracle juice and will not go without it. You should take 1 oz. 3 times daily. You must be consistent. And, if 1 oz. doesn't work, drink a little more until you start to feel better. It is just fruit juice. There is nothing in it that is harmful unless you are allergic to some of the other juices in it (apple, pear, grape, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, cranberry, cherry, citric acid, pectin, xanthan gum). They even took out the preservative (sodium benzoate) just recently. The cost ends up to be about the price of a daily Starbucks coffee.
Oh, one more thing, after all these years of being so sick I couldn't even exercise - In August, I started exercising again! I feel like I'm on top of the world.
Four years ago, my mother died from cancer (ovarian in origination), and if I had known about the mangosteen juice, I would have gotten it for her. Unfortunately, I didn't know. I hope now, that God has given me a way to help other people with their health and wellness issues and hopefully, they too will benefit from this wonderful and amazing product.
Here's to your good health!

Safe to take while on chemo? Has anyone asked their Oncologist.
-
Yes, I am happy to say that the mangosteen juice is safe to take during chemo. In fact, it helps to keep your blood levels up, and it keeps your energy up. I had a friend on it during her chemo (after her oncologist reviewed the literature) and she decided to stop taking it and could hardly get off of the couch. After one week, she started back on the mangosteen juice, and felt like a different person. If you look at the ingredients, you will see that there is only fruit juice in the bottle. The mangosteen fruit is grown in Southeast Asia and is processed by a company called Wilde Flavors out of Germany. They adhere to the strictist standards in growing and harvesting the fruit. They are licensed in three different areas for harvesting and processing the juice. They only use the best tree farms in the world.
If you need anymore info, please contact me at terrybraucher@columbus.rr.com.
Is that allowed? I have never been in a chat room before I posted this, just happened to see it online with questions about the mangosteen and I wanted to let people know that there might be some natural product that would help with the cancer. I will be praying for you all.

Thanks Terry - A friend of mine had recommended this juice and my Oncologist hadn't heard of it. He didn't really seem interested and said I should not take it. He had no idea what was in it though and didn't seem to want to know. I think it's great that your friend's Onc. took the time to review the literature.

Actually the research that I found on the Web cautioned consuming the juice while on chemo. It's apparent potenency is in the high level of antioxidants it contains. Antioxidants destroy and inhibit free radicals like cancer cells, some chemotherapies actually work by creating their own free radicals. For those chemotherapies, antioxidants are not recommended in high levels. Always do your homework and talk to your onc in detail before taking anything. I'm glad that Terry shared her personal experiences, but she is a distributor and as you can see is new to the boards, I'm sure some goggle for mangostein juice led her to my post and hence her comments. Nothing personal Terry but while I'm interested in the juice, I'm a little leary of your post. And Red, as Terry mentioned the Xango brand has lots of things added to enhance the flavor - I found a company called Genesis Today who markets mangosteen 100 - there in nothing in it but Mangosteen juice no addiditives at all - and it cost the same as the Xango stuff - I figure I can buy this and add my own fruit juice if I want to. It is expensive, and part of what Terry said is true, it's just juice so why not give it a try - so that's what I'm attempting to do. Good luck with your decisions!

Thank you Wendy.

Dear Wendy - I'm sorry if you feel that I was "trolling" for someone I could sell the mangosteen juice to. That was not what happened. I actually was researching mangosteen+rosacea and this site came up. Yes, I am a distributor, but I would never try to sell anyone anything on this type of site. I thought you were asking about what the product did for people. And, I was just responding to your question. As a distributor, I have been researching the product and I have a learned a great deal about the phytonutrients (called xanthones) that are in the rind of the fruit. The make-up of XanGo is such that they puree the whole fruit (fruit, rind, stems, leaves and seeds) and then process it into juice. They do not "add" any other nutritional enhancements because they are already there. The rind is bitter and that is why they add other juices to it to taste better and they also keep the sugar content down. If the other products do not use the rind (pericarp), then they will not work, that is where all of the nutritional value is. XanGo has a patent on the process, therefore no other company can use the whole fruit.
There is some new research on pubmed about using antioxidants and chemo at the same time. More physicians are tending to think that it is alright. That does not mean all physicians feel this way.
As to the being "leary" about my post - why? My mother died from cancer 4 years ago. I wake up every single morning missing her. What she and others go through to beat this disease is terribly difficult and I simply thought I could answer your inquiry about a product that I happen to have knowledge of. The only reason I gave an e-mail address is so that if someone wanted to know more, I could send them literature or tell them what to "google" for more information. I understand that everyone needs to be careful when on various websites, but I only had the best intentions and apologize deeply if I have offended anyone. I only wish for your recovery. And, I have had such great success after being ill with daily migraine headaches for almost 30 years that are down from 100% of the time to 3% of the time, that I thought I could pass some info along.

Has anyone taken mangosteen and noticed any difference in their cancer count or turmor shrinkage?
-
I bought a bottle of it today at Costco and am going to see if I experience any of these amazing results in the next two weeks; my scar area still aches from my partial mastectomy of March 2006 and my energy is not what it used to be so I'll see if this stuff makes any difference. The bottle recommends one ounce taken once a day. I have been online the past hour researching this stuff and am becoming increasingly disillusioned and wondering why on earth I bought it. I'm trying not to experience contempt prior to investigation ... It makes me a little sick to my stomach thinking about how companies are so willing to play into our fears about our cancer by promising a new natural cure .... sorry, I feel a rant coming on so I'll stop now!
-
Luckysmom,
Your post was written in October and this is January, so you probably have already noticed a difference, or not, in the Mangosteen you purchased from Costco.
Please realize not all mangosteen products are created equal. You will probably not receive the intended benefits from those purchased at Costco or Sams. Your best bet would be Xango, or go to your health food store and check out Trace Minerals if you don't want to be involved with MLM. They both have excellent products. Trace Minerals is less expensive.
Some do not care to purchase through Multiple Level Marketing. I have no bias against them, as some have really good products. Some do not, but I won't be turned off of something really good for me just because it's sold under MLM.
Also, just for your information, when you're dealing with cancer or any other serious ailment, the recommended daily dose will probably be insufficient. I took 3 oz in the morning, and 3 at night (and lots of other stuff). I've heard of some who took a bottle a day, but are cancer free. Expensive? Sure is. But what are our lives worth?
I suppose it just takes a lot of sifting through a lot of garbage to find the right thing, and I fully understand your frustration in those, as you said, who are playing into our fears. It's sad, really.
It looks like Terry has done her homework, and is only posting here for the good of people. Should she keep quiet if she knows of something she believes will work? No. She should not. Perhaps it won't work for some, but it will for others. There is no silver bullet. All the good things we can put together will help strengthen our immune system. Mangosteen is one of the good things. If the Costco brand didn't work for you, and you don't want to try a MLM, then I will again suggest Trace Minerals. Their products are excellent. I have absolutely no financial interest in either product. This is my opinion only.
Hang in there, girl....

I use a mangostein product called Vemma. I first started using it about 2 years ago after hearing about all the things it can help relieve. I have epilepsy and the meds I take for that cause all kinds of icky side effects. I did notice a change in the less than attractive skin problems the meds caused especially on my face. I had stopped using it (just couldn't remember to do it in the morning rush). After the dx (September) and surgery with multiple complications, I was not eating much. By the first of the year, I was significantly malnurished. My hair was falling out (not on chemo), I was weak, fatigued, etc.) I started working hard to "get better", taking in more protein, healthy food and starting taking the Vemma again. I am now back to work, able to walk and go up and down steps without losing my breath, and my hair is no longer falling out like it was - you get the picture. I can't tell you how much the Vemma is contributing towards this, but I am so sick of being sick, I figure it can't hurt. I know all about the literature that it seems like a magic "pill", but that is not what I saw for myself. I didn't wake up the morning after I first started taking it and was cured of my malnutrition. I think is suppliments the other things I am doing towards my recovery. I have a friend that swears by it and says it helps her with all kinds of stuff including her back pain. I did not take it while I was on antibiotics. I don't sell the stuff, and it is expensive, but if it is going to contribute to my recovery, I figure - why not.

Dear TizMe...From Terry Braucher: Thanks for the support. And, you're right. Not all mangosteen fruit juices are the same. When the juice contents state that there are many xanthones (the healing phytonutrients) in the juice (or the MOST xanthones), you need to check to see if there are actually 40-43 different xanthones (as XanGo has) or do they extract one or two xanthones and then replicate the same xanthones over and over (many other brands of mangosteen juice).
And, I do have some really great news. Last year, a study was done at a major university where a doctor, a Fulbright scholar, injected colon cancer cells into bald lab rats (this type of rat has approximately 85% compatibility with a human). The doctor then extracted all of the xanthones (one of the xanthones was alpha mangostan) from the mangosteen fruit (XanGo uses the whole fruit, thus all of the xanthones) and injected them into the rats. The tumors that were measured looked to be about the size of a dime on the DVD. One week after the injection of the xanthones, the colon cancer tumor on the rats was reduced to an almost immeasurable size.
This study will be coming out in the Journal of American Medicine very soon. And, sorry, but we can't give the name of the university because they didn't want a flood of calls and letters. There is a DVD available, I can tell you where you can go to get it (not through me and I don't make any money from it). The DVD shows the doctor who did the study speaking with another doctor explaining her credentials and her study. This doesn't prove 100% that the whole manogsteen fruit cures cancer. But, it does show that the nutrients (xanthones) that are in the mangosteen fruit do help. XanGo puts three whole fruits in the bottle of juice and the juice also has anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. It is also safe for children and pregnant women.
This doctor is continuing her research/clinical studies in Europe. She is going to study skin cancers next.
The actual study is coming out in the next couple of months. I sorry, but we haven't been given any other information. If you wish to order the DVD, please e-mail me at rbrauche@columbus.rr.com.
I have now been drinking XanGo since Aug. 2006, and my body continues to heal. My migraine headaches are gradually disappearing, my pain level is less and less, my skin seems to be gaining more elasticity, my hair and nails seem to be growing extremely fast, I have much more energy and I just have a general overall feeling of well-being.
I don't know if this juice will help anyone, but what can it hurt? It was introduced to me at a time when I was so desperate, I didn't know where to turn. I prayed to God every day asking for something to help me, and I feel that the answer was the XanGo mangosteen juice. Terry

Terry,
Do you have breast cancer? At the Breast Cancer Conference in Oct. the Moffitt Cancer Center recommended against using any of the juices. I did try Xango and Mona Vie and noticed a difference in my joint pain but when I heard this I stopped taking it.
-
I would like to tell you all who have tried xango -manogsteen It sounds like alot of you did not take the right amount. With Any cancer need to take a serious amount of this product and be true to taking it properly to see results of the testimonials. If you were taken less than what is recommend you were probably waisting your time and effort, thus not good results. You should have taken 1 bottle a day with a gallon of distilled water for 21 days. then you could back of to a lower does. the American cancer society does endorse this product. If you would like more information please contact me
-
I love it... Moffiit claims their alternative friendly (website)...what a joke. A immune system booster is not going to turn off chemo and if it does it is not much of a chemo. I got up and walked out of the conference, I could have picked up one book or one website and learned more about breast cancer. The icing of the cake for me...was when the oncologist told me chemo does not work for most people. Than why push it? And there is the time they told me I did not have enough cancer to treat. I wanted to tell them wait awhile I'll grow them some more. I'll get off my soap box now.
I used mangosteen and never had a cold or infection through out all my chemos. I do believe it helped me in a couple of areas.
Flalady
-
I would think that since chemo is a poison, killing off cells in our bodies that we ought to be careful in taking antioxidants while on chemo. You want to chemo to stay in your body for the time being and do its job. I would hold off until after chemo to start with any detoxing and anti oxidizing
-
I started drinking xango about 9 months ago. I was a 2 year survivor when I started drinking it. It does make me feel better, stronger and less fatigued. For some reason it thickens my hair.
It has at least 16 different fruit juices in it and I take it like a vitamin.
All that being said, I do not believe it is something you should be taking while your on chemo. You are actually supposed to avoid antitoxidants. My onc wouldnt even let me drink grean tea.
I do not believe the testimonials that go along with this product. I dont see it as an alternative to the treatment of breast cancer or for that matter any cancer.
Its very expensive and my SIL gives it to me for free just and I drink cause I think why not.
I do take offense that someone would actually come to this website and try to sell this product or any product for that matter.

I was introduced to Mangosteen by Xango by a nurse friend last year. My onc didn't want me to take antioxidants during chemo. Did you know that not taking antioxidants while on chemo was determined by only one study for a different disease; not cancer? I guess MD Anderson is now doing a study on patients by taking antioxidants with chemo. It makes sense that you would have less side effects. My onc said I could use it during radiation. I was on it and felt better. More energy and less joint pain. Also, I've always had redness in my face and it disappeared. It is expensive; about $125 plus a month if you can get it at cost. I wish I could get it for less. Another brand is sold at Costco and Sam's but it is not as good and hasn't been studied like the Xango brand. My friend told me that Pfizer has now hired or contracted with the originator of Mangosteen and they are studying it. All I can say is that I felt better when I was taking it and when I was off it for a week or so, I felt worse. I wish there was a way we as survivors could find a way to get it for less money as a group. I heard that you can buy the fruit in California but no other place. But the rind is very bitter.
Also, I had the pharmacy here that compounds drugs take a bottle and make it up into a cream. I put it on my face every day and it is wonderful. You have to work with them to get the right consistency. My friend put the cream on her leg daily and it got rid of her psoriasis. She had a mild case, but nothing else had worked. Even the prescriptions helped only temporarily. I don't sell the product, just can give you a testimonial. I haven't taken it for about a month and plan to start again because my joints really hurt from the Arimidex. I also started Vit D and Fish Oil and it has helped some. Maybe the Xango will help more.
I wish all of you well with whatever you decide to use.
Linda

Nicki,
I agree with you. This should not be taken during chemo. Just because it is natural does not mean it will not interact with the chemicals. ER+ patients are told not to consume soy and that is natural. If we should drink one bottle a day for 21 days as stated above I think we would go broke. Unfortunately, there is no magic drink or pill. We all have to research alternatives and do what we feel most comfortable with. We need to be as informed as best we can. I agree with you regarding the testimonials and people trying to sell this product on this site.
Lenore
-
This is all very interesting. I only drank the stuff I bought at Costco for a few days; it tasted horrible and I was very skeptical about it anyway. I agree with Lenore that there is NO magic drink or pill to keep our cancer from returning; we need to stay informed and avoid things liked to recurrance. One thing I just read was that low iron/anemia can be linked to recurrance. I have been limiting my red meat intake, in fact tried going vegetarian last summer, and the iron pills were not enough. So I'm eating spinach salads a few times a week and red meat one time a week. I really don't think people should try to sell products on this site; it doesn't seem totally ethical to me.
