I have a long trip coming up and am wondering if anyone has had any problems with swelling or discomfort on long flights?  Any tips would be most appreciated.  : )

    Cheryl,

I fly all the time.  Here's what works for me:

    1.  Wear shoes that slip on and off easily.  It's easier to get through security and then when you are on the plane, you can keep your feet cool and comfortable.  You also might want to take a thick pair of socks to put on if you tend to get cold feet.

    2.  Drink lots of fluids before and during your flight.  It's a pain to have to get up and pee all the time, but it's much better for your circulation (and skin) to stay hydrated.  Also, it's better to get up and walk around occasionally anyway.

    3.  Don't wear anything that is going to bind your waist, knees, ankles, etc.

    4.  I put my laptop bag under the seat in front of me and use it as a foot-rest, so that the circulation in my legs doesn't get pinched at the knees.

    Good luck!

    Cheryl,

Thanks for asking about Sybil.  Yes, she was the one who had the freak accident and had all the stitches in her side.  She was healing very nicely and we thought all was well, until Memorial Day weekend, when she died very suddenly.  No warning whatsoever - I woke up to find her (still warm) body next to the bed.

We were all devastated and still feel the loss dearly, but we take some comfort in knowing that she didn't suffer.  We think she must have had a heart attack or an anuerysm.

She was a huge part of my life for almost 13 years, and I miss her terribly!

I wear support socks that are firm support at the foot and up the ankle and calf.  Also, I do isometric exercises of the lower extremities and upper extremities.  I also, on long -6 hr- flights, get up and (don't laugh) do ballet/yoga standing streaching exercises at the rear of the plane every hour or so.(you could use the toilet if you get too embarressed) but it is essential to keep moving to reduce swelling and prevent clots.

As a former flight nurse, I'm well aware of the need to keep moving and drink plenty of non alcoholic or carbonated liquids.

As someone who just this past weekend had to undergo 2 ultrasounds, looking for either a blood clot or gawd knows what else to explain my leg sweeling after a recent flight(both were neg), I havent always been astute about exercising on flights, but now, well iodine can I borrow your ballet slippers Laughing

Sure can and we'll call you Twinkletoes!

I also wear clogs, easy on and easy off for the inspections.  Good even if your feet DO swell, tool.

OMG Donna..I'm so sorry about Sybil :(

    She's beautiful...

I had extreme swelling when we went to Bora Bora...and funny thing is I've gotten it since too when I go on shopping marathons!  I guess staying hydrated is key...your trip is coming up..I bet you're excited!

    Love Marisa

    Kater,

I asked about that as I was also concerned regarding flying.

I am over a year out from surgery with no signs of lymph.

Do you think I still need a sleeve?  I don't think I have time to get one now.  We leave in three weeks.
