Tangerine peel may be a cancer fighter Breast, lung, prostate and ovarian cancer patients may benefit from finding Reuters Updated: 4:35 p.m. ET Sept 12, 2007
LONDON - Tangerine peel could help in the fight against certain cancers, researchers said on Wednesday.
Human cancer cells, which contain an enzyme called P450 CYP1B1, were destroyed by a compound contained in tangerine peel, Salvestrol Q40, scientists at Leicester School of Pharmacy found.
The findings may offer a new approach to uncovering a treatment for cancers such as breast, lung, prostate and ovarian cancer, the scientists said.
Medicinal chemist Dr. Hoon L. Tan said: "It is very exciting to find a compound in food that can target cancers specifically. Salvestrols may offer a new mechanism of dietary anti-cancer action.
"Indeed, the depletion of salvestrols in the modern diet is due to the fact that many people no longer eat the skin of fruits and this may be a major contributory factor to the increasing incidence of some cancers in the human population."
The breakthrough was being presented at the British Pharmaceutical Conference held in Manchester.
But he warned that the research was still in its early days and many tests will be needed before reaching the clinical trial stage, which could take between five and seven years.
The researchers have formed a private company, Nature's Defence Investments, to protect and promote their research, with the potential of designing a natural anti-cancer alternative based on the new technology.

Did you see all the tv coverage on Vit D? I sure hope all the discoveries that are being made will mean a healthier future for our kids. I already have her take Vit D everyday as a supplement.
The TV doctor was saying that Vit can be stored so 15 minutes 3-4 times a week is what is needed ... legs and arms exposed without sunscreen. By exposing your skin, the sun turns cholesterol into Vit D ...
Tangerine pills and Vit D pills, Calcium pills ...... eek

- That's funny. When I was very young I used to like to eat orange peels (not all of it though).

I wonder how long it takes to find out and start applying this to real people?

My younger daughter has always eaten lemons and the peel.
I will eat the white part of citrus peels. The zest is kinda tingly.
Is there a link to the article?

Only you can see the [edit]. It just lets you know that you can edit it. Another not well liked aspect of this new platform.

Thank you Anne!

(copy of my post in CAM on same subject.I'm really giving this thought!)
I'm still mulling this new fact.
Yesterday I baked hake.
I popped it into a large pan, herbed and spiced it, and squeezed an entire lemon over it.Then I covered it w/foil and baked it slowly, for about an hour.
The lemon peel was cooked in the juice .It was soft and herb-flavored.
I ate it, thinking I should have used a tangerine!
Short of candying it, can anyone tell me any good ways to fix tangerine peel?
(And, more importantly, are the benefits lost if not raw?
I can eat tangerine peel, but not, say, a whole peel.)
Thanks!

I found this - sounds good and I would imagine that it could be made with ground chicken.
Tangerine Meatballs 1 pound ground beef
1/2 pound bulk pork sausage
1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 teaspoons freshly grated tangerine peel, divided
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup fresh-squeezed tangerine juice
Juice of 1/2 lemon (3 tablespoons)
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Hot cooked rice or noodles
Tangerine zest and segments, seeded, for garnish
Thoroughly combine beef, sausage, crumbs, egg, 1 teaspoon peel and nutmeg. Shape firmly into 24 small balls. In a large skillet, brown meatballs well in oil. Remove them from skillet and pour off all but 2 tablespoons drippings.
To make sauce, gradually blend tangerine and lemon juice into sugar and cornstarch. Add to pan drippings and cook over medium heat, stirring, until thickened. Add meatballs and cook, covered, 5 minutes over low heat. Uncover and add remaining teaspoon of peel. Heat thoroughly. Serve on bed of hot cooked rice. Garnish with tangerine segments and tangerine zest.Makes 6 servings.
