Today was clean out the master bedroom day. Dh and I went through the closets and dressers today. We took out 7 boxes of stuff we don't need anymore. Clothes was the main item but lots of other stuff went to. Once we get the boys rooms done we are going to have a garage sale. I figure if we continue at this pace we will be ready for our sale in October sometime. Lucky it is still warm and sunny here then.

This is really making me feel better. I just want to rid myself of all extra junk. I do still need to get those files cleaned out in my office though.  This week it will get done.

OMG, Fitztwins  -  I did the same thing today!!! LOL. I threw out some old curtains and sheets and got my towels bagged for the animal shelter.  Tomorrow I'm aiming for the cabinet under my sink (God only knows what I'll find). EmbarassedThis weekend I'm thinking about cleaning one of the closets in my bedroom that has nothing but boxes and decorations in it. It would be nice to actually use it for clothes!!

I have another cleaning tip.  If you can remove the lint trap in your dryer put in under some running water. If no water runs through it, it needs to be cleaned.  Use a scrubby sponge and dish detergent. Rub it gently until the water runs freely.  This will keep you dryer running more efficiently.

Keep it up ladies, we're on a roll.

I got a long brush just for the dryer from Lowes. Man I could not believe how much lint came out from under the lint trap.

Me, Tina!I'm tired of having so much stuff.Caring for it, cleaning it, getting places to keep it, paying money for rooms to keep it all in.

I've just moved for the 3rd time in 4 1/2 years.I'm too weak to unpack.

    I dont WANT to unpack!

I HAVE everything I need in my dressers(clothes), and in the fridge.I have a few pots and pans.I eat off paper plates or out of the pot.

All my furniture surfaces are blessedly BARE!

I dont even have most of my BOOKS unpacked(although I will.)

I dont have my tapes and CDs unpacked.

The mover installed the antenna on my TV(correctly).Sometimes I watch poor Katie Couric.

I could be SOOOO happy living a sparse life.

I wish I could throw all these cartons out unopened.

But-today, while waiting for someone, I unpacked the cartons of ceramics I made and put them on the shelves of the etagiers where they live.

And...I was happy to see themSurprised

    There goes the neighborhood.

I decluttered 11 more books from my house.  One of them I read recently and really liked.  I gave it to a friend.  All the others I just dropped in the book return at the library.  They can add to their collection, sell it, or throw it away.  I don't know if they appreciate receiving donations that way, but that's not my problem!  LOL

Our church is having a 'Free Saturday Giveaway' tomorrow. It is like a yard sale but no money changes hands. We brought all the 'stuff' we had at our houses and are giving it away to the community. We are putting a restriction of only 5 items per person. There have been quite a few layoffs in the area and we want to help those who need some help. The elementary school about 1/2 mile from the church has 405 students and 95-98% of them are on reduced or free lunch program. We just want to help the community.

I rearranged my kitchen today and found more to get rid of.  I thought I was done with the house.  I want to rearrange some other rooms too so maybe I'll find even more to go.

Isn't it funny how you can keep finding things to get rid of once you embark upon this path?  I can't tell you how many times I have gone through my closet(s) and can still come up with more to give or throw away.  Maybe I just need to ease myself in where others can go cold turkey right away.  Whatever works.......Embarassed

Lately, I've found myself admiring more and more those rooms in magazines that are pretty sparsely decorated.  NOT bare, mind you, but lacking too many tiny pieces of furniture, too many tchotchkes, too many things hanging on the walls.  Now, I'm starting to appreciate a couple of larger sofas/chairs/tables and one HUGE painting or the like.  It's very serene-looking to me.  Can I call it Zen?  I really don't know squat about Zen, but it's my IDEA of Zen.

Yes, I did go through the baskets hanging from the ceiling beams look.  Then, the collection display look.  I have to laugh as one of my neighbors, who lost her husband 2 or 3 years ago, has been ridding herself of most of her life's collections and she loves it.  (And this was all wonderful stuff, not junk)  She keeps telling me that her bedroom is looking like a monastery and it's so peaceful.  I don't know if I'm ready for that, but maybe just really pared down.

This week, my challenge is to totally clear off my "home central" desk and organize those files.  It's amazing how quickly it gets out of hand.

I love reading about everyone's little triumphs.  Positive reinforcement is what we all need.

    Tina:   AMEN!!

I read somewhere (quite awhile ago) that we spend the first half of our lives collecting things and the last half doing what we are all aspiring to do now - declutter or "get rid" of things.  Makes sense to me.  I think when your young and newly married or whatever - we all "collect" things" to make our homes nice etc. - sort of the nesting syndrone and now I think we just want things more peaceful, more serene, more uncluttered.  Just my opinion . . .  but I sure do love this thread, it gives me inspiriation to continue on.  I just keep finding  more and more places that need to be cleaned so I think I don't think I'll have to worry about  ""job security for a long time!! :):)

Hi Ladies - you would be proud of me.  I tackled that closet in the bedroom and donated a bags worth of clothes and threw a bunch of stuff out. I even got to the cabinet under the sink!  What a mess under there!!!UGH!!  I also went out and bought bunch of plastic bins at the $ store to put above my washer and dryer.

Next project is getting rid of more clothes once I switch them over from summer to winter.

I think I figured out why I am holding on to some stuff.  It was always a dream of mine & DH to own a vacation home. I think I was holding on to things that I thought I could use in the new place.  Well, unfortunately, we've had several years of bad luck and needless to say never bought anything. So here I sit with my stash!!!!  LOL. Well its all going bye bye.

Why do you think you ladies are holding on to things????

I definitely hear you about the 'decluttering' dilemna.  I have spent so long collecting things because they were cute, or well priced or or or..... but since I have downsized...and I do mean downsized ...I am in a 5th wheel I still have so much 'stuff' closets full of clothes... gigantic storage unit full of stuff... I have given away carloads of stuff and taken clothing to the consignment stores and advertised stuff for sale but definitely can't part with my books..... I love this link and will continue to check in. By the way Who is the Flylady?

Flylady is the force behind flylady.net.  On the surface, it is about getting, and keeping, your house in order by taking baby steps each day.  She often says, your house didn't get dirty in one day, and it won't get clean in one day either.  There's a number of tools she offers to help with this.  Five-minute hotspot drills involve setting your timer for five minutes and tackling an area that is quick to collect clutter.  Then there's 15-minute zones.  Again, set your timer for 15 minutes and work on an area that seems overwhelming.  You might be amazed at how much can be accomplished when you know that dinger will ding in just a few more minutes.

What I like most about flylady is her deeper message.  She was called flylady initially because she teaches fly fishing.  Her system was born from her own experience with depression and she shares her methods for climbing out of the dark pit.  In her messages, she will often ask, are you FLYing yet?  She decided along the way that FLY stands for Finally Loving Yourself.  She stresses the importance of FLYing right now.  Not 10 pounds from now, not $10 from now, not a clean living room from now, but NOW.

So much of our emotional well being is rooted in having peace with where we are right now.  This continues to be a sticking point for me.  I try to be content with where I am at this time.  Usually, that is the point of conflict within me to get myself a little further down the road where I feel certain I'll be happier and more fulfilled.

Flylady got me through a difficult time of separation, which was followed by divorce.  I was dx'd with bc at a time when I was just so sure things were going to get a whole lot better.  I felt like my world view was turned on its head, that things should have been transpiring differently for me.  Oh, how angry I was.  Thankfully, all that I learned during my previous difficulties made my journey through bc a whole lot smoother.   My world view now is much the same now as it was at dx.  Faith is tested by fire, as the saying goes.

As I type this, I am about halfway through a major decluttering of my home office.  Instead of buying what was becoming an endless supply of plastic tubs to store each year's files, I'm cycling through them.  I've shredded 10 bags of paper so far this week, and I still have several more to complete one tub.  I do so with faith that I am clearing room for something new and better to enter my life.

Always Hope - Good Luck this weekend, hope you make it through!!

Tip of the week - This is a lot of work intitially but it lasts a long time.  Use car wax on the tile in your shower  the water will bead up just like it does on your car and the tile stays shiny. Try to find one that is white in color, this way your grout will stay the same.  The first time I tried this the wax was green and it took forever to get the green off the grout.Laughing

I've noticed a personal phenomenon.  I can think clearer with lots of empty space around me.  Have any of you found this to be the case?

Also, I can think MUCH more clearly and focus mentally when I don't hear the drone of the computer fan.  Maybe my computer is just noisy, but it's a real presence in the room.  My body just "sighs" with relief when I shut the computer off.  Maybe I need a new CP?  Any suggestions?  Of course, I would donate my old one, which is in perfect working order, to a needy cause. Innocent

It was in a fung shei(sp?) book I was reading that if you can't sleep you should look at your night table and your bedroom.  If it's cluttered your mind will be cluttered and that affects your sleep.  I'm working on my bedroom now.

Okay, I'm having a little relapse.  I realized it as I was going up the stairs to my second floor and the piles of paperwork and books on the stairs was forcing me to use only the right side of the staircase. Embarassed  I guess I have some more work to do.

Did I ever mention my neighbor, Roscoe?  He is a true swamp Yankee.  Never throws anything out.  He lives in a house that has been the family home for generations.  He's a bachelor.  Loves old cars and has several parked in the woods that he will be "restoring." Of course, he has been retired for about 15 years and hasn't made any progress yet.......He also has a couple of barns near the house that are stuffed to the gills with all sorts of metal flotsam and jetsam.  He even has a set of airplane wings that his father left there eons ago; they were part of an airplane kit he was assembling!  You see, this malady runs in the family. LOL

Anyway, there is no hope for Roscoe.  Those barns will never get cleaned out.  Maybe some day they will get struck by lightening and the wood will burn but the neighborhood will be left looking at a huge pile of melted metal. Cry

So, you see, things could always be worse.

I'm making progress on decluttering my home office ladies!  I needed a tub to put away files for this year so far, so I pulled out a tub of files that are 6 years old.  It contained files that needed to be shredded, so I starting shredding.  And shredding, and shredding and shredding.  Then I got curious about how many bags of paper would this tub generate??  Then I was on a mission.  Over the course of a week, I shredded the entire tub and it produced 30 bags of shredded paper!  It filled my garbage can almost twice!

<>Now I need to get my filing up to date.  I still haven't filed my '06 tax return.  ugh

My goodness, I have not been at this thread

in a while and you are seem to be

    going gangbusters

Just returned from a small trip

and am really having trouble getting

going. My place is just full of clutter

and things, even books, diaries that

I will not let go. For one thing, they all have

to be shredded.. Shredder only does a few pages at a time

Then again, maybe I could just toss them out.
I do not have a car or an elevator, so this presents a
difficulty of sorts, but some times, I make calls
and people come over to collect the items.

Tina: absolutely right on, less clutter

the clearer the mind, it really helps

Even when you clear a corner in a room

    I feel the energy lifting

I must do just a bit today

    Where to start

Working on business cards as well

but you have to focus on one area

    or you get nowhere

So, I will get moving on it

    right now

    :))

Hey ladies, hope you don't mind if I toot my own horn.  I finished decluttering my home office yesterday!  I finally got my 2006 files put away and my 2006 information to my CPA.  That was a big black cloud that hindered progress for several weeks.  Now I have my tax return that's ready to mail in.  All I need now is the money to pay the tax bill.  Frown  I hope I've cleared plenty of space for new and wonderful things to enter my life.  Sure could use some financial abundance too.

I don't know if my DH is helping me or hindering me in my attempts to make do with less.  Now he is complaining that he doesn't like our everyday dishes because they are TOO HEAVY and he can't walk around outside with a mug of tea/coffee because the mugs are TOO HEAVY.  Yes, these are pretty heavy dishes but you know how pottery can be.

Anyway, I am torn between putting these dishes away in a box (for whom?) or giving them away to one of two friends who have the same (or similar) set.  This is a considerable amount of money and it's just killing me to give the stuff away, but why should I store it and isn't it more important to keep everyone happy? LOL  Of course, I WILL have to go out and buy more mugs for my guy.........

    HELP!

Why not just buy ONE new mug for your hubby to use that is light and he likes?  It can be his special mug and you can keep your dishes.

    Hi again 'decluttering' friends.....

Let's see what I have accomplished.... had about 30 items of clothing accepted at the consignment store.  ( great for spare cash) Have over 1large garbage bag of clothing to take to the thrift store and a grocery bag for one of my neighbours.  I must say it does get easier to get rid of stuff... Have also gone through papers and eliminated a few grocery bags worth of those so things are getting better though one would never notice it if they were to see the clutter so no one is invited over til it's done!!!
