Nutri System?

I have been going to a dietician for 4 months and have lost 26 pounds and going down. I gave myself one year to get 30 off. And it is slow going now. maybe 1/2 kilo every 3 weeks. No matter, it is going off. I find it is all in portion size, once you eat only the good stuff. Even eating just good stuff i.e. veggies, fruits, grains, fish, chicken if your portions are too big you won't lose. That's my two cents.

My husband and I just signed up today for Nutrisystem. We both need to lose weight however I need to lose the most. I managed to lose the chemo weight but started putting it back on when I switched to Arimidex about 20 months ago. We decided that we needed help in understanding portion control, plus this seem like a perfect time since we both want to do it, and we are having the kitchen remodeled soon and will only have the use of a microwave. We will receive our first order in 4 to 10 days. I am looking forward to passing on great results. Joy
-
Nicki,
I'm really interested in Nutrisystem, too. My hairdresser is on it and is doing really well. She lost quite a bit of weight rather quickly. She said that she is eating more fruits and veggies on this plan than any other diets she had tried. It sounds pretty good!
Joy, I look forward to reading about your great results!
Hugs,

Well, I have officially started my program. I received my food within a few days! Was surprised. And I custom ordered my food. I was pleased that I had the choice to keep the soy products limited. I aim for whey or milk protiens...My personal preference (phobic) but so far so good. They give you a little diary that you mark off items to eat. It's pretty cool. I have to say I'm not starving either. SO, we will see what happens.(I am going to have the lasagna tonight) with a salad and some green beans. I'll keep you all posted too. I don't have a whole lot of weight to lose but my BMI could be better and I do have 15+-lbs I can't shed since chemo. I have done weight watchers but I feel I still am not really accountable (I have a free reign of food to eat as long as your within your points-didn't really work for me)and for what I spent for the 28 day order I would easily spend 1/2 of that at the grocery store weekly! And NS foods are all measured and prepared! Anyway-
Don't mean to sound like a commercial, I'm just excited to start this...
Lexi- if you decide to do it, best of luck to ya! Hey, I'm not too far from you. I'm sacto area.
Joy, keep us posted on your results. I think you'll be pleased. Did you customize your order too? Or go for the favorites? Postive thoughts your way! You can do it!(it'll be easier with your husband doing it too.)
Nicki -
We received our food in about 5 days and started the program on Thursday. We both decided to just go with the favorites this first time so that we would be eating the same food. So far we have liked everything and it is so great to not have to give any thought during the day as to what we will have for dinner. We spread everything out on the counter and then filled 7 zip lock bags with the food for each day. We have not been hungry at all. I look forward to our first weigh in which will be on Wednesday. Will keep everyone posted. Joy
-
Good idea with the zip locks! I was trying to think how I could be better organized. Its a lot of food and I couldn't imagine for 2! Good Luck! I weigh in on Thursdays too.
Keep me posted. I'll let you know how I do too... -
One thing to be very careful of ... most NutriSystem foods contain soy - if you are ER positive, you should NOT do NutriSystem without talking with your onc first. Soy can produce estrogen, and ER pos ladies should steer clear of estrogen.
-
I didn't do Nutrisystem, but Jenny Craig. By the look of the food on the Nutrisystem commercials, the portion sizes and food looks a lot like the Jenny Craig food I ate while on the plan.
I lost approximately 20 lbs from May to July on Jenny Craig and have kept it off, even through chemo. Once I met my goal with Jenny Craig, I quit the program, but have kept the lessons learned with me: caloric intake, portion size, the importance of veggies and fruits.
Best of luck to you all.

Thanks for reminding me about the soy. I took about an hour today to go through all the food items and was able to find quite a few that do not contain soy. This month I will trade as many of the items as I can with my husband and pay close attention next month when I order. First weigh in will be on Thursday. So far the food is very good and is great for portion control training. Joy

My dad did nutrisystem and lost weight so fast that the doctor was concerned. Also, the food isn't salted so you have to do it yourself or that can cause problems with cramping. He lost something like 20+ pounds in less than a month. I mean really fast!!

Well, first week down and I actually enjoyed the food. I feel like I am getting a vacation from cooking. I also lost four pounds the first week which is a plus. My husband lost almost five pounds and is having no trouble with hungry since men get to add in extra protein. He is also eating more fruits and vegetables than usual. Joy
-
Congratulations to both of you! The foods not so bad...There are a few things I can do without. Unfortunately the bars and the really yummy things have isolated soy or soy isolate in it. Although I'm ER/PR- I still try to avoid what I can...I'm only down a couple lbs. At least I'm not up. Little bummed. But do have to stay more focused. I also joined a gym- so hopefully adding in 1/2 hr of strength training will help.
Anyway, wishing you continued success.

You can save yourself a lot of money by just counting calories. 1200 calories a day will drop 2 lbs a week (after first two weeks which usually but not always lose about 6 - 10 lbs. Mostly water)
You can buy diet meals in the frozen food section in your grocery store.
These Jenny Craig - Weight Watchers - South Beach etc diets just control your calories. I know some rely more on protein diet. But basically its controlling your calories.
So, just count out 1200 calories a day and buy your diet food from your local grocer.
If you exercise - each day at least 30 minutes - you can eat more then 1200 a day.
My husband had to diet due to being a borderline diabetic. I told him to eat whatever he wanted - including a candy bar - just count the calories - for men it's 1500 a day.
That might not sound healthy but if it's hard for you to give up lots of different foods then it's ok. He did that for about 2 months then started making choices. That snicker bar didn't keep him full as much as that apple did.
So now he's making choices, based on calories and how long it will keep him from feeling hungry. He's lost 40 lbs and is never hungry. And doesn't feel deprived because he can have that piece of cake as long as he adds it in his daily intake.
Eating out? Many places like Applebee's and Chili's have a diet menu . -
I agree it would be cheaper to just do it alone, but one of the great things about Nutrisystem is that it does teach you portion control and forces you to eat those fruits, vegetables, and diary that would be too easy to just replace with a candy bar if you were just counting calories. I have also compared many of the "diet meals" that are available in the stores and they do not come even close to providing the same amount of protein. I am very glad that some people can just count calories and lose, but I am also happy for a program that is well rounded and preparing me for better understanding how to eat once I reach my goal. For me the money is well spent since I have been struggling with these 20 extra pounds for two years. With that said I do hope I can educated myself during this time and learn to be a healthy calorie counter. Maybe I just needed to spend the money for a couple of months to wake myself up. Joy

I would watch the high sodium content. I had a few of their meals and the sodium is a bit high, especially if fluid retention is a problem.
-
I was on nutrisystem and lost weight but stopped when i had more surgery. I plan to start back next week after the Relay for Life dinner.
susan -
I'm confused. I just read they don't add salt to the food, then someone else said it has high sodium content.
I just went over to their site, the salt doesn't look all that bad. I got tired of looking for a dessert on the list without soy in it, if someone knows of one that doesn't have it, pls let me know. -
There definitely is sodium in their products. I like things salty and I NEVER have to salt anything.
I successfully lost weight on this program 3 years ago and I'm back on it again.
-Nancy -
good day ladies, I've been reading your posts and was wondering how you are doing? I've gained a total of 45lbs, ugh and have been waiting to have my reconstruction surgery before I start to try and loose this weight. But I feel the longer it takes to have my surgery (fighting insurance) the more despondent I become about this very large belly and very flat "chest". My sister is going to start NS next week and I was thinking about starting with her. anyway, was just wondering how you ladies were doing. I've lost weight before by counting calories, it's just alot easier to not to have to "think" about it. thanks again for your time
Julie -
Julie, I am on my seventh week of Nutrisystem. It has been a slow loss but at least I am losing. I have lost 10 pounds so far and love the program. I feel like I am on a vacation from cooking which is good since we are having our kitchen renovated. I would like to lose 17 more pounds. At this rate it will probabaly take me three more months but I didn't gain this over night either. It just feels great to be going in the right direction. Good luck if you decided to go on the program with you sister. Joy
-
Joy a 10lb loss is GREAT!!!!! Thanks for responding. I think we are going to start next week or so.

Ladies, Here's my experience.....
I decided not to "diet" but to change my life style instead. I work out with a personal trainer 3 days a week and follow a high protein (to build muscle) low calorie menu. I decided my weight wasnt the real concern but my over all health. If I got my heart healthy, everything else would work out. (Yes, I took Adrimycin) My calories equal about 1400 per day and about 60 oz of water. He spaced out my meals and snacks so I am never really hungry. Eating at certain times and what you eat is really important. I first looked at Nutri Systems and talked to a counselor there and they were a little reluctant but recommended if I did use the system to use the menu for Type II diabetes. I just came to the realization that I needed more than just a boxed meal to help me get strong and healthy. I know not everyone can afford a personal trainer (I used my savings). We are moving at a snails pace on the work outs but I am getting stronger every single day. (I finished chemo April 20th) and am currently in week 4 of radiation.
Everyone is different and has different needs. Just remember to get healthy instead of shed pounds quickly as although you like the results, it's tough on your body. Our bodies have been through enough!
I'd happy to share any details of my menu etc.... Just respond privately.
Good luck and good health to everyone! -
I also changed my habits. Smaller portions, eat the breakfast it's a must. Lots of greens, fruit, no red meat (well, maybe once a month), fish 3x/week. If meat, then only portion not bigger then palm of my hand. No white bread, all whole wheat breads, pastas, rice, etc.
Most important - walking 5x/week - close to 2 miles/day. First 20 lbs. melted so fast that I couldn't believe it. I am 64, 5'5 and for 15 years and as of Jan.1st I was 240 lbs. As of today (5 1/2 months) I lost 55 lbs.
Heartbreaking is the clothes situation. I had nice clothes and was happy to exchange my wardrobe from 2X (some even 3X) to size XL. I was so proud and bought everything new. In less then two months nothing fits again. I can't afford to get all new again. My pants are now size 12 and tops are Medium.
My advice - shop slow when loosing. I am glad I am loosing weight but I wish I waited with replacing everything. How stupid of me!
I have been "dieting" on and off all my life, and of course - it doesn't work. I am sorry I didn't change my life style long time ago. I will be done with Femara in two months. Gone will be my protection from estrogen. Body fat also produces the dreaded estrogen. I figured that it is in my power to reduce the fat and there for lower the estrogen.
Every time I hesitate to walk the distance, I imagine the reason why I am doing it. I just turn my MP3 player louder and off I go. My little poodle now hates me for dragging him along but he needs exercise too. If nothing else - I look and feel much better too. That is the bonus.
Good Luck and Best Wishes to all. -
Wow, good for you Hana! Maybe you can take all of your clothes to a resale shop? Some work off of consignment and some will give you a check up front. It's just a thought! I have a variety of 4 different sizes in my closet. I just bought comfortable (cheaper clothes) as I went through the adjustment. (Steroids sure didnt help)!
I cant believe how fast I am feeling in shape. I see the Onc for the first time in 4 weeks today. It's been so nice not having anyone poke at me!
Julia -
Well, I just received my nutri-system yesterday. I started it today and so far so good. It is actualli really nice to not think about what I am going to eat for meals. It's a bit of a challenge finding space for all the food! It made me clean out my cupboard, so that's a positive!
I am hopeful to lose 10 lbs for the month. Wish me luck!
HUgs,
Lexi -
Hey Lexi- good for you!
I just restarted again...I foudn it challenging to store all the stuff too. But I started to bag each days worth of food. I got that idea from Joy I think...
Anyway I'm wanting at least 10lbs off too. For now anyway. I absolutely cannot get below 2-3lbs I've been losing and gaining the last 2yrs.
Good Luck!
Nicki -
Nicki,
Well, I sort of fell off the Nutri System wagon!LOL! I went through a little scare w/ a rash that turned out to be nothing serious(Thank you Lord), and basically fluffed off the Nutri System. I plan on getting back tomorrow. I did notice that for a couple of days after being on the plan, I had a little headache and felt a bit off. Oh well, will give it another go!
How are you doing? I hope you are enjoying your summer. Alomst time for the kiddos to get back to school!
Hugs,
Lexi -
I'm officially on the first day of NS. I ordered some stuff off of ebay for a sampling and did NOT like the lasagna or the pasta salad (bleech!). However, the muffins, and the trail mix bar I had so far today have kept me full! I want to lose the 20 lbs I gained after going OFF of chemo. I was SKINNY while on it and liked that.
Love and prayers, Deb -
Hey Deb,
I hope that you do well on the plan. I am a big loser! I actually sent my food back. Once I stopped using the food, I just couldn't get back into it. I actually wasn't feeling real well on it. I wasn't sure if it was the stress of a possible recurrence on top of a new eating plan. I had a floaty feeling and some tummy problems while on it. Sigh...
Back to regular exercise and watching what goes in my mouth!
Lexi -
I sent my box of Nutri System back too. It made me sick to smell it. I joined too soon after chemo and think it would still make me ill to smell it. Plus as other posters have mentioned, it has sodium and soy in almost every entre etc.
Good luck to those on the program. I like the counting calories idea.
Nancy, your little avatar ballerina is adorable.
