You tube democratic debate
I thought the debate was fantastic-- definitely one of the best political debates I've ever seen. I thought they were funny at times, thoughtful and gave us more of a peek into unscripted answers. I really liked Dennis Kucinich most of all-- Barack Obama second. I liked Hillary Clinton less than I wanted to like her, especially when at the end the candidates were asked to turn to their left and say something they like about the candidate-- she blew off Obama and instead said something positive about all the candidates. Kucinich was funny with the double entendre when he said, there's no one to the left of me.

I thought it was interesting but I do wish we could have a real debate - not just a question and answer session. I also think the time given to each question only allows for soundbites - not incisve answers.
All that being said - I am leaning more and more toward Hillary. I don't agree with all her answers but she is incredibly smart and realistic.
The best thing I think is that just about all the Democrats are so good.

One more thing - the guy holding the gun - his "baby" - was pretty scary.

OMG, I know-- it was scary- wasn't it. -
I don't think politics is an appropriate topic to be discussed on a breast cancer message board.
LuAnn -
I'm not sure I understand. We can discuss Big Brother 8, American Idol, Grey's Anatomy and panties - but politics is a no no? I join in American Idol, Grey's Anatomy and I find the discussion about panties hysterical - but I don't like Big Brother so I never open that topic. I do love politics and resent being censored.

I don't get this either. The majority of the country seems to be hung up on crap that doesn't matter and ignores the stuff that does. More people could probably name the Idol winner or latest bimbette to be arrested (Lindsey Lohan, out on bond...) than the candidates for President and what the differences are between them.
Kind of shameful. -
-
I disagree; this thread is called "Moving Beyond Cancer" and politics is an appropriate forum, in my opinion. It's important to keep up with life outside breast cancer, as long as it doesn't get ugly.
Catherine -
Catherine, I agree with what you just wrote. As the elections get closer of course we will have things to talk about and what better place to do that than in the "Moving Beyond Cancer" forum.
I just wish we could have these topics without the usual people trying to take it down. Same old people, same old boring intrusions.
Thank you Amy for starting the thread. The debates are news and thank goodness we have the right to watch them and comment on them. -

Well said, I agree completely. I didn't see the debate last night, but reading various news articles about it on the google news site today, I'm sorry I missed it. It sounds like the closest thing to a real political debate that has happened in a long time. -
I watched...it seemed to be planned to be entertainment as opposed to a real debate...like they played a lot of the stuff for laughs or pity instead of content. Nothing I saw really impressed me much...Still don't have a clue who I will vote for. I do know a few I won't vote for, so I guess that is some help. The process of elimination...

LuAnn and Emelee: There are lots of topics that may or may not be appropriate for these discussion boards. I must agree that I dont think politics is appropriate, because there are so many different views and usually this kind of thread ends up getting nasty in one way or another.
I agree if your not interested, dont read it and dont post there. For example - was it nice to say to Emelee not to sabotage this thread. Of course not. There were some very good and funny threads that either got deleted or moved to the humor section because the moderators got alot of complaints. So instead of complaining, why not just leave the thread you dont like alone.
Do I feel censored? Yes I do, because some of my breast cancer peers didnt like some of the threads that Emelee, LuAnn, and many others enjoyed. They didnt ignore. They complained.
Just like some of you want to talk politics, others do have the right to express their feelings if they think it is not appropriate.
There has to be a sense of fairness for all.
With regards to the debate. I didnt watch it. I wanted to, but my husband hates watching politics. Im interested in what every candidate has to say. I dont know whom Im gonna vote for, or who I like. Im thinking that I probably wont make up my mind until I walking in to vote.
So I say - weneed to be nice to each other, even though we have different views.
Nicki -
I think the posters here are being extremely civil and nice Nicki.
Regarding your post inclusion sentence of
"For example - was it nice to say to Emelee not to sabotage this thread."
Show me where anyone said TO emelee "Not to sabotage this thread."
The correct sentence was:
"Trying to sabotage another thread perhaps?"
There is a difference.
No one needs another to come to a thread and infuse what your post alludes to. This is a legitamate thread started to talk about the debates last evening.
One would think we are mature enough to quit with the thread patrol charging into each "Moving Beyond Cancer" thread to tell everyone to play nice.
Me thinks you protest too loudly dear. -
I must agree with Nicki. If one doesn't want to read this just skip it. And if one disagrees with someone else don't get hateful. Best thing to do is take a deep breath, think and then post or DON'T post a response.
I think we are mature people here. Just don't let this thread get ugly.
Emelee, loved your funny picture.
Glad you all enjoyed the debate. I missed it. I really want to start watching everything I can about our presidential candidates. I need to be able to make up my mind at SOME point.

emelee,
Since you admit to not watching the debate
Why then do you post:
"Just be careful not to post funny pics here....or it will get moved to humor"
and then add a huge laughing cat picture?
Trying to sabotage another thread perhaps?
So Im not accused of misquoting. This is an example of what I see as a mean spirited statement. Thats my opinion and Im sticking to it.

Another example of what I believe is being mean spirited to another breast cancer survivor.
I enjoy the Moving Beyond Thread as much as everyone else and have a right to express my feelings. Maybe you thought everyone was playing nice. I didnt get that impression. Again thats my opinion. And what is wrong with just reminding everyone to be nice to each other.
Is there? Is there a difference? I have a right to my opinion, and I think the post to Emelee and this post to me - was meant to be hurtful.
Just as the moderators encourage us. We agree to disagree.
I also stand firm - IMHO that politics do not belong on a breast cancer discussion board. But thats my opinion. Others may want to get their minds off bc for a while and just talk about stuff.

And this statement I find offensive. I am a mother, grandmother, wife, friend, and caring nurse. I have breast cancer, positive node, bil. mastectomy, brca2+. Its insulting to be referred to as "dear" in this manner.

Another example of being mean spirited. Hmmmm maybe even against the rules of conduct since it was addressed to me.
Nicki
Against the rules? Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't we allowed to address the person to whom we are speaking? It's done on every thread.

Amy,
It never fails. Another intelligent thread lampooned.
This is quite tiresome.
Thank goodness for the ignore button and the wonderful people here who are care enough to carry on a productive conversation.
The constant bombardment does get so tiring.
I am here because like the rest of us I fought breast cancer and am still dealing with the loss of my husband. I find great strength in so many of our friends here.
Blessings and Love.
Again, sorry Amy. Keep up the good work. -
I'm Canadian so I probably shouldn't comment. But I've lived in the U.S. and I did study PoliSci, including lots of American politics, in university (granted, that was over 30 years ago! )
I watched the debate. I felt exactly the same as AlaskaDeb:Quote:

As for whether politics - or any other specific (or potentially contentious) topic - is appropriate for this discussion board, this is the Moving Beyond forum and there always are lots of OT threads. Anyone who doesn't want to talk politics should simply pass by this thread. Seems pretty simple to me. For those of us who are interested in politics, since this does tend to be heated topic, I hope that the discussion remains civil and polite and where there are disagreements, that people simply agree to disagree. Let's all remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if you think that their opinion is really really wrong! -
This could be a very interesting thread, and it's a shame that it has been sidetracked with debate over it's appropriateness! We should be a ble to discuss any topic in "Moving Beyond Cancer" as long as we are respectful to one another, and can "agree to disagree."
That said, I must agree with Karilynn (and others) that it is shameful that most Americans know more about popular entertainment figures, than about the politicians who make decisions that influence our lives! At the very least, WE should know how the candidates feel about funding for Breast Cancer Research & Education!
Personally, I am supporting Barack Obama, but I was also very impressed with Kucinich in last night's debate. So there's my 2 cents worth! -
I wish we were like some of these small children. We adults who are supposed to be mature could learn a lesson from the children.
Wished our world could grasp this concept. We here on this message board are "one." Be nice.
Politics and religion are sensitive subjects. We have different political views, social views, views on religion and some do not believe in A religion. So, for me I will probably skip any interaction regarding this subject.

If you're uncomfortable, it's probably a good idea you not participate inj the discussion. If you are comfortable, it'll be great to hear what you have to say. -
Back to the debates-- while at times it was more entertainment than informative-- for me it was helpful to see the candidates in this manner- since so many times the candidates have prepared speeches and cookie cutter answers. For instance, I appreciatre John Edwards' answer about gay marriage-- even though I wish that he was for it. I appreciate that he spoke honestly about his personal feelings and religious beliefs, and how he wouldn't let that interfere with the running of the country. While I would prefer he was gung ho in favor, I'm glad to know this side of him because it helps me to trust him.
I caught a repeat of the first half of the debates yesterday morning on headline news-- I would have watched the whole thing but a friend stopped over. I bet anyone who is interested could find it on youtube. I've already taped my question to the republicans and will probably upload it today or tomorrow. -
I agree with AlaskaDeb..... process of elimination. Also the debate seemed like sound bytes to me.
I don't particularly care for any of the "choices" in either party. I haven't decided on who to vote for but for sure know who NOT to. -
Ladies,
This thread has a right to be here as politics is just as much a part of our popular culture as discussions about television programs, movie stars, newspaper articles, etc..
Please agree to disagree and move on. If you don't like this thread, then you may not want to read it.
Also, remember our rules of conduct, specifically, You agree not to discuss or repost deleted posts or warning letters sent informing you or another member of a violation of these Rules of Conduct. Continued references to deleted or moved posts/threads could result in being banished from this site.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and for continuing to support one another. After all, isn't that what you are here for?
Tami, moderator -
For the first time in my voting life Im so disheartening in what Ive seen so far in the candidates, Im thinking none of the above.
Obama over Hillary is a given though.
