This came from the Cancer Crusade today---I thought it was very appropriate for the "afghan ladies".
******************************************************************************
It is every man's obligation to put back
into the world at least the equivalent
of what he takes out of it.
~Albert Einstein~
If you're like most of us who are on this cancer journey together, there are days when your mind is flying frantically from one possibility to another, unable to focus on a positive thought, endlessly playing out worst-case scenarios. There are other days when you're nervously waiting for the doctor to call with your latest test results. You pace nervously like a caged animal, wringing your hands, shredding tissues, willing the phone to ring and simultaneously praying it won't.
Can you tell I've been there?
I've been there lots of times in the eleven years since my diagnosis, and I know I get to have those "special days" off and on for the rest of my life. And while I don't claim to have figured out how to get through them without experiencing a certain level of worry and anxiety, I will tell you that I've discovered some tricks to surviving those days
with a minimum of misery.
Create something. Then give it away, perhaps to someone else who is on this journey with you.
Now, before you roll your eyes and mumble that you're not the "creative type," hear me out. I'm not talking about painting a picture, unless painting pictures is something you enjoy doing. I'm not talking about knitting a prayer shawl unless knitting is something you like to do. I'm not talking about writing a story or composing a tune or birthing a poem unless those are things
that bring you peace and joy.
What I'm talking about is creating from your own well of talent and skill and knowledge and expertise. Your well is full, and you know it. Bring something up from your well, and then give it to someone else who is also hurting and scared.
Bake a cake. Build a birdhouse or a website. Create a business plan. Assemble a model. Create a sacred space. Plant a container garden. Cut and glue a greeting card from colored paper. Design a better bedpan. The possibilities are endless, and only you can know what's right for you.
We know of one amazing teenage girl who painted funny faces and designs and slogans on plastic buckets that she kept close at hand for her own sick days, and then began making them to give to the other patients in the hospital's oncology ward. She said, "As long as we're going to throw up, we might as well have something funny
to look at when we do!"
It's a fact that focusing on a creative project helps us relax and become calmer. Thinking about who we will give it to helps us remember that we're not alone, that millions have gone through what we're going through and are doing fine now, and millions more are going through it at the same time we are.
We call these "healing projects" because they help heal both the creator and the lucky recipient.
Dear God, You created each of us in Your image, and you blessed every one of us with special gifts and talents. Could it be that you want us to be creators, too, to use the talents you gave us to create meaningful gifts for one another and for the world? During this most terrible time in my life I have forgotten how to use the gifts with which You blessed me at birth. Show them to me again, and lead me to use them to bring light and joy to my fellow man and to the world. Help me to create, Lord, and to use the gifts You gave me until I use them up, because I know that when I return home to You, You will want me to have given my all. Amen

I am Joanne s, usually only post on the recurrence/metastatic cancer board. I have lung mets which developed 5 yrs after tx for Stage 1 invasive ductal cancer. I thought I had posted earlier, but I can't seem to find it, so I risk repeating myself, because it is so important to me to express my gratitude and thanks to you wonderful and inspirational ladies.
It is hard to describe what it feels like to receive an afghan in the mail, totally unexpected, not even knowing that one of the boards had something like this on the go.
It feels like an instant affirmation that life is good, no matter what the circumstances, and that I am not alone, no matter how it feels on occaision, and that people are so overwhelmingly GOOD, kind-hearted and generous, that it makes holding on to life (no matter how tenuous) a worthwhile endeavor.
You have no idea how precious a gift you have sent and how it has made me feel. Thank you to all, this extraoridinary group.
I know that not all are religious, so I do not mean to offend, but I find that you are all a wonderful example of a living prayer.
With love - Joanne s -
Silvergirl! What a lovely piece.......and so true. I've always believed that it is "better to give than to receive"..something alot don't do anymore. I'm going to check out the website!
Joanne: I'm so glad you received your "hugaghan!" Sounds like it did just what it was supposed to do.........put a smile on your face and a hug in your heart! Enjoy!
Hugs,
Denise -

Hey to all!
Vickie and Madison.......Just want to let you know that I haven't quit the 'square program!' I've got probably 10 or so done.........do either of you need them soon? I can do a few more and get them out to you....or let them pile up a bit! Let me know!
Hugs,
Denise -
I'll admit, I've taken a little break from "squares" lately. How are you doing? Are either of you in need? I can make some if you do.
-
I'm mailing a few squares to MB's so you guys can teach me how to border them. I haven't had much time to do them, but my aunt has around 15 - 20.
-
I almost finished an afghan during the 17 hours in the car this week (just have the border left) If you want to send afghans to me, please do.
Vickie, how are doing on squares?
Hugs, Madison -
lucy/hollyann is sending apox 100 squaares to vick
need madisons addy -
OK, I am putting a little package together for the Pinkstock ladies and will include my measly 8 KK squares. Thought it would be a good laugh for them! I thought I had already mailed them to Madison but found the package under the McDonalds crap in my hubbies car!
-
I'm just starting my 10th square by hand. LOL Well...I've actually probably started it a hundred times and ripped it out. I just don't know what to do when I get to the end, what hole to use to turn around. So, one GS is gone, and the other is almost ready for bed so this time I'm going to count stitches. When it's quiet. Anyway, I am still working on them, but it sure gets slowwww when I put the KK up. lol
pals
cheri -
I got some beautiful squares from cy's mom...thank you so much.
working on three separate ones right now...the unveiling will be coming soon.
you are all the very best.

Vickie -
Hi Vickie and Madison,
Sent a large box of squares to each of you today.
Hugs,
Sue -
Hey Boo---show off!! LOL
-
I have some that need to be packaged to mail. I did send a few to MB so I could learn to border them. I'm so rattled with everything else that's going on, not sure I'll get them out before I leave.
-
Cheri,
Come visit me in Florida and I'll have those squares just flying out of your hands!!!! -
Boo, careful what you ask for! I am needing a break something terrible. Just wait until I can walk....
-
Oh Cheri, baby, come to Florida. Boo/Sue and I will show you a good time, right Sue? And I am not talking about teaching you to knit! LOL (I use the KK)
-
That's what I forgot to put on my packing list SQUARES!
I'll go do that right now! -
Good idea! I have about 7 squares just sitting on the loveseat. I'll just pack them up and bring them along.
-
I have a few done too..so can't wait to see them all put together...
hugs MB -
Sue, I just received your squares in the mail. Thank you, thank you.
Hugs, Madison
