Hair Dye

I am a one-year BC survivor; had surgery, chemo and rads last year and my hair is growing back nicely. But the color (black and white!) makes me look like an old lady. But I'm afraid to color it; has anyone tried any of the all natural hair colors? I'm trying to be very careful now with stuff like this!~ Thanks for your help.

I finished tx last fall and ever since my hair has been long enough I've colored it just like I did before. It came back in much grayer than it was before and the first time I colored it came out a lighter brown than what it normally did. By about the third coloring it resulted in my regular dark brown. With my normal hair dye having difficulty covering so much gray I don't know how the all natural hair color would do on it. I haven't tried it though, but I'd think it'd be even harder to cover the white or gray. Good luck.

I finished chemo March '07 and colored my hair for the first time in June....mine was sooooo gray and naturally dark brown/black. The first time I used a semi-permanent from Sally's Beauty Supply. It didn't cover too well. A cosmetologist told me I needed the peroxide to make it cover. So, I went to the health food store and bought a permanent color with peroxide but no ammonia. It did the trick and I'm getting ready to color again within a couple of days.
Good luck. -
Mine came back in elephant - sort of black, gray, brown, and gave off no light. I had it colored by my hair dresser and am a much happier camper.

Elephant. That is great! ROFLMAO.
I'm looking with dismay, too, at my hair color now. All 1/2" of it. Boy, it looks pretty gray. I'll be coloring it as soon as I can (have enough to uncover in the first place).
I assume from what I've been reading on these boards that it'll be okay to go ahead with coloring even at only about three of four months out from chemo?
For covering the gray, with either permanent or semi-permanent coloring, there are products out there to pre-treat to make the grays less resistant to the color. If you ask at the beauty supply store, I'm sure you will get advice. Or, try doing an internet search. There are probably lots of brands. My old hairdresser used to use something new - something she spritzed on the gray areas before applying the semi-permanent color. I'd ask her but I haven't been there in many months and will in all likelihood color my own for a while at least.
Tina, still laughing about "elephant." Now, I've heard of "mousey......." -
I finished chemo in Jan and my hair came in just like glaveg's. Finally last month I couldn't stand it any more and went out and bought the temporary color that washes out in like 28 days. It worked great. It seems like it may actually last longer. I figure I'll just keep using that until it's long enough that I feel justified spending more money on a professional dye job!
