i recently experienced this star phenomenon myself after posting a picture of this electric looking rainbow.... and actually watched with interest as it went up to a five-star and then down-rated all in one fell swoop......kind of like the stock market!
i why do we have this? ....maybe when this site gets overhauled this is something useless we can part with?

I tried to put a star rating on one of mine! I have no idea how to do it.

I never look at the stars unless someone makes a point about them.

is that why the 'panties' thread is only 4 stars?

Sure we can ditch it, ignore it. I don't think most people notice anyway.

I used to wonder what the stars meant and how they got there. I only found out the other day, I don't really bother with them.

I have never used or paid attention to the stars but I agree that they really shouldn't be there.

I also agree that the stars ratings are divisive. And should be done away with.
I have always noticed them, because at NYT online, we used to have an interactive website.Threads, anc peoples' responses, could be rated valuable, and gain stars, and each user carried their won stars beside their user name.
    It was removed(the stars feature.)
It WAS very divisive and a thing of personal dislikes.

About the panties thread, since I'm so accustomed to noticing ratings, i was astonished to see the panties thread, almost immediately, bearing 5 stars!I mean, really, it's amusing & fun, but not what I'd rate 5 stars!I have put up much more informative threads that were never given stars.
No fear.Soon it was down to 3, suddenly. It was like the stock market after that-up, down.I could see the first posters saying"This is funny" and giving it 5.And next came various "I dont like Joan" people, along with "I DO" people.
Meanwhile in "Moving Away", other threads of no great shakes are bearing 5 stars, and threads which are more valuable have no stars at all.
So clearly the STARZ method doesnt work, and is an indication of private preferences for the thread-maker.
    And, yes, should be gone.
I think it's been said many times:If you don't like it, don't read it"!

Easy fix: Have the name of the person and what they rated the thread next to their posts.

ie: "Jane Doe rated this thread a one star"

    Should be very illuminating, no?

Wow, Im not really sure how that works. I did not realize that a star rating could go up and down, I thought it had to do with the amount of people that looked at it. Yes I agree it should be ditched. Im not really sure of the purpose it serves. Like most I ignore it.

I agree with ditching the stars. What real purpose do they have anyway? This site shouldn't be akin to a popularity contest.
I mentioned that someone rated my birthday thread a 1-- but it wasn't because my feelings were hurt- I thought it was hysterical that someone took the time to give my birthday a low rating---how petty.

I have said it before about eliminating the rating system but it may have been on a thread that was deleted, lol. I really do not see what useful purpose it has. It is not like we are going to a movie and even then I don't always agree with the reviewer. Maybe the mods can do something.

I think you're all right! I'm adding this post so that I can "report it to the moderators", asking them to review this thread...and consider getting rid of the star system!

Agreed - the star system should go. Especially since someone has been using it for some time to rate nearly all threads on one board with one star - passive agressive maybe or just bigoted? That kind of thing really doesn't belong here.

heh - I never knew "we" controlled the stars - thought it was some arbitrary thing based on page views!!

I'm telling you, being slightly clueless will keep you happy - no drama here!!

I never knew either. Why would someone want to star or take away stars from someone who is posting their feelings or thoughts? Now we have to think about how we say something or fear stars being taken away?!! Or worse , not getting a star at all?!

I also thought the stars had something to do with views or something...I don't pay any attention to them and agree that they need to go.

I never notice them. Maybe if we get rid of them those who aren't really serious about learning and communicating will lose interest.

Remember Dr. Seuss... the SNEETCHES... the star bellied ones, and the plain ones... quite a lesson to be learned.

If we had to do away with the name system regarding how many posts we've written (pooh bah, old hand, veteran, etc) then we should do away with the star system.

    Who really cares?
