    I also read the Kite Runner and enjoyed it. He has a new book coming out soon. I think it's from the female perspective this time.

    I read Nordie's at Noon and have a reprint of a quote about the "Best day of my Life" on my fridge. I liked the ongoing support and growing relationship between the women. Of course it was emotionally difficult at times.

    Ive been hooked on short stories lately. Someone on this site got me hooked on Laurie Notaro books. I just finished Diary of a Fat Bride by her. She is Funny! I love, love, love anything by David Sedaris. I recently read his book Naked. I am also reading The Thong Also Rises. This is a compilation of short stories by women. I think that is edited by Jennifer Leo.

    I LOVE Laurie Nataro and David Sedaris!!! They both make me laugh out loud. Does anyone have other books that are like those two authors? I have read all their stuff and I could use a good laugh these days.

    I love short stories and get about a dozen different journals and short story magazines from different university writing programs. I buy tons of short story anthologies...always get the "best of" for the year and the Pushcart Prize book. They are my little rewards...just love reading a good short story in any genre.

    I am almost half way through Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. I usually love her books, but I am having a hard time with this one. It is about a school shooting, so I don’t know if it is the subject matter that is putting me off or not. Usually I really like her characters, but this time they just seem like stereotypes to me….Maybe it will get better, but right now I am disappointed.

    I have “Water for Elephants” waiting on my bedside table.

    I need some ideas for summer reading….

    I recently finished 19 minutes by Jodi P. I like how she reflects multiple sides of issues. It was haunting because of the recent shootings at VT, but it also offered many insights. I'm glad I read it. I'd read anything else by her. I heard Sisters was very good.

    I LOVE your head dress. I want to dance everytime I see your picture! I have a friend in Fairbanks. She used to be my neighbor in Pennsylvania. I have another friend moving there soon with her 32 sled dogs from Maryland.

    AlaskaDeb - Laurie Notaro is coming out with a new book at the end of May. Its her first non-fiction. Can't remember the name but if you go to Amazon and do a search for her name the book with come up. Im excited to get it! As for other short stories like David Sedaris and Laurie Notaro Ive been having a hard time finding stuff like that. Im trying out the travel series edited by Jennifer Leo which is a collection of short stories about traveling. One of them is called "The thong also rises" and then their is one titled "Sand in My Bra". I believe the stories are all by women.

    OMG!!!

    Sometimes life is just way stranger than fiction! This is SUCH a long convoluted story I don’t know where to begin.

    I worked with a gal who was a teacher at the school where I run the library. Her name is Mo and she and I like the same types of books. In fact, she is the one that got me reading Lauri Notaro in the first place. She and I use to laugh about wearing inappropriate t-shirts to school….ANYWAY…Her niece somehow knows Lauri Notaro, I don’t remember how they were acquainted. Mo’s Niece came up with the title to this book…There’s a slight possibility I might be going to hell! Mo and I were joking last year that we should have it put on t-shirts since we were always talking trash in the break room!

    So I guess I know someone, who is related to someone, who gave one of my favorite authors the idea for the title for her first novel! Did you follow that??? LOL. Kind of like a weird version of “six degrees of separation”.

    I am going to get the book right away and see if Mo’s niece (I’ll have to ask Mo her name again) is mentioned in the dedication or something….toooooo weird!

    I am reading Chicken Soup for the Breast Cancer Survivors Soul. Even though most of the Chicken Soup books are tear jerkers, this has not made me cry too much. I also just finished Chicken Soup for the Girlfriends Soul and I cried all the way through it. I have EE book to read next. Some fun books to read are the Shopalholic books by Sophie Kinsella. Oh yeah - finished Tuesdays with Morrie last month. Etta - I also read the Kite Runner didn't remember till I read your post. Geeze - boy do I need help with this ole brain of mine. Karen in Denver

    Hey Karen in Denver - I'm new to this forum and didn't realize my Kite Runner post was reponding to an older post! I read Thursdays with Morrie awhile ago. I also read a really good book Letters for Lizzie by James O'Donnell. It's not for the faint of heart, but when I saw what you were already reading, I thought you might like it. Its a true story and if you start it you must read it the whole way thru.

    19 Minutes was very good. Jodi has a way of writing from varied perspectives in a very believable way. Let us know what you think when you're done.

    Just finished Dream When You're Feeling Blue: A new novel by Elizabeth Berg. I love her! It was about 3 sisters during WW2. It would make a great movie.

    I've started reading The Myths series - started with the Alexander McCall Smith version of a Celtic myth. Can't remember the name. Now (drinking a glass of wine and can't remember anything!) "Weight" by Jeannette Winterson (is that right?) about Atlas.

    Just finished Tim Russert Wisdom of our Fathers. That was a good, easy read - some tears but mostly good tears!!

    I just finished "Water for Elephants"...loved it. It is about a circus train...too cool. I love anything about circus folks...especially side show stuff....I know, not very PC, but I always love it.

    I also just reread “Alas, Babylon”. It is a post apocalyptic book written in 1959 that seems so contemporary that it could have been published today. I love post apocalyptic books, dystopian lit and alternate history books. Anything where people, against all odds, come back from the ashes.

    I love Janet Evanovichs' Stephanie Plum, Jasmine! I've read up to "10 Bigs Ones". Haven't read 11 & 12 yet. I've got the hots for Ranger!! And Grandma Mazur, how funny is she? Marsha

    I love those books. A new one comes out every summer,a nd I am an addict...buy every one. How about a 3some with ranger and Joe??? Oh-la-la. Great laughs. Oh, and the cross dressing rock-star guy? He cracked me UP I want to grow up to be Grandma Mazur...

    The Plum books are like popcorn....you just can't stop reading them! I talked to a bunch of writer friends and we can't really analyze why they are so successful. There are lots of people that have tried to copy her, but no one is as funny....the books are certainly not sophisticated, but I just adore them. The writing is so sharp and clean, the characters are great, I am anxiously awaiting the next book.

    Interestingly enough, I have not liked the books of hers that are not in the Plum series. Tried a few and they didn’t click for me….

    I adore the Plum books, too. Me? I go for Ranger! Anything that hot can call me anything he wants to. But then I'd marry Joe. And, like you, I want to grow up to be Grandma. but I want to continue to drive.
    I've tried and tried to get dh hooked on them but he's not read the first one yet. Or it may just be a gal thing.
    He was always asking me what I was laughing at when I was reading them. I don't usually laugh out loud at books, but these are just so funny!

    Just finished Kabul Beauty School. True story of an American hair dresser who starts a beauty school in Afghanistan to help the women there empower themselves. Pretty interesting insights on what it's like to be a woman in another culture.

    Kite Runner is the best book. It is at Costco now. I read it during chemo and it kept my interest in spite of feeling like sh///

    Ok Im out of it. Ive never even heard of these books. What are their official titles and who writes them? What are they about? Sounds like something I should check out.
