Never pass up an opportunity to speak a kind word of appreciation. There are six billion people on the planet, and 5.9 billion of them go to bed every night starving for one honest word of appreciation. -Matthew Kelly

In Putin's pockets for sure since the oligarchs are his handpicked court.

What does the turtle fear from the new SC justice? The fact that he cannot support her tells you of his bigotry/old boys club mentality and not his ability to discern what is good for the US.

Oh what tangled webs, as I'm not hearing Putin say that while he took a circuitous route to do it, all the previous bombings and killings were so he could get into Dombas I presume. I do wonder if he is as crazy as he sounds. Then again, it may seem to him to be something of a face-saver for all the failure on his part that has gone on.

I worry about the next steps more due to his mental state which is evil. Like his orange counterpoint he is convinced of his own personal genius although I'm sure he sees how poorly it panned out this time. Like his counterpoint though I expect he has some 'excuse' for it all. Personally, it sure seems like he has squandered a lot of military resources which doesn't bother me although the loss of life of the Russian soldiers who had to do what Putin wanted does feel bad. I feel it is justified where the loss of aircraft, ships, ordinances etc. have been used up.

I do hope ultimately and not too long from now, Putin is out. He is it seems as evil, maybe more so then the Loon.

So I thought I'd just drop this in. I've heard complaints for awhile about how Loon is likely to cause seats to be lost for the Reps. with his rally's. He ( and they all knew this ) will never let a 'slight' go and he has plenty of them in those he calls RHINO'S and in anyone who hasn't otherwise sufficiently worshipped. M. McConnell should be a slightly nervous man -- this won't be the last time the Loon is let out. Depending on what happens in the coming elections -- we might, if truly fortunate be able to relegate the Loon to one of the far corners and only coming up now and then in passing. Especially if that passing has something to do with the downfall of the Reps. party.

Senator McConnell is a bigot and in the good old boys club and he also votes in order to get reelected by his constituents. Been in office since 2007 (I looked it up) which says a lot about the people of Kentucky. Sadly.

Actually, I'm not into the Oscars much. It is something that went by the wayside a while back. I do though feel that while Will made apologies to others -- he should have apologized to Chris Rock as well. No one came out of that looking very good. Also the somewhat cynical part of me has questions. We are angrier and harsher with one another more than ever before. That said, C. Rock's joke was poor taste as hair is somewhat sacred to women.

As to Biden's words that Putin must be ousted from the Kremlin and not stay in power. He is just expressing what most of us here have thought for some time. Perhaps putting a lot of people on notice about current expectations. Certainly sounds like Putin's life and his war continue to go downhill. Sounds like he is still losing Generals and that he and his resources are in a fairly depleted state, despite the fact that much damage could still be done. Hopefully we will send what Ukraine's need along with some of the other countries. They ( Ukranians are staying strong, united, and determined to hold onto their democracy.

On the topic of the Oscars: Academy Award Winner for best picture: CODA.

I highly recommend this movie. CODA is an acronym for Children Of Deaf Adults. The acting is fabulous, the storyline has lots of laughs while weaving a more serious narrative about the pressures of being the main source of support for your parents because of a disability they have that you don't. Dh and I watched it last weekend. I wasn't sure he'd like it but he gave his verbal stamp of approval and did not fall asleep at all watching it, which is another kind of stamp of approval from him. It's one of the best movies I've seen in quite awhile.

Another highlight for me was Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas winning Best Song in a Film, they wrote it together, she sings it. She's incredibly talented.

The Will Smith story distresses me. One reason is it completely overshadows the movie “ King Richard” about the amazing story of Richard Williams, father and coach of Venus and Serena. I wanted to watch the movie and now I'm having second thoughts about it. I do not think this was the time and place for violence. Very, very sad it happened.

On to politics; it feels to me the Repugs are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill regarding Biden's words on Putin. They will cry foul for that but will act like big Trump d—k lickers when their orange buffoon calls Putin a genius. They are so off base.

McConnell also had a deal with Russia. A steel factory in Kentucky I think. But it was a deal with Russia.

Rock/Smith: Not the most shining example of what to do in public. But at least his wife knows he is 100% behind her

Cruz should have smacked Trump over what he said about Cruz's wife being ugly. Cruz is just one of a long list of disgusting creatures.

If Will Smith were in middle school, and went up, smacked someone, and then started shouting profanities, he'd be in the principal's office ASAP and probably the police would be called.....no matter what the other person had said about his family. You don't have to be friendly, and you should surely address it later, but you should not go up and hit someone without warning. I was also horrified by the female host who called the bachelor actors up & proceeded to say they should go off stage, remove their masks & clothes, and that she'd examine their throat for Covid with her tongue. After which, she patted down the next two male presenters. If a male host had done that to female actresses, there would have been hell to pay & very loud calls of sexual harassment. Icky and inappropriate all the way around.

Biden didn't say anything that any decent person isn't already thinking. If a right-winger declared that Putin shouldn't stay in power, the Republicans would praise him/her as very tough and standing up for American values. Put it on the long, long list of hypocrisy from the Grand Old Party.

Oscars 2022: a historic night for women – overshadowed by male violence

If Jane Campion becomes the third woman ever to win best director but Will Smith slaps Chris Rock, did it really happen?

    By Sian Cain/The Guardian

Oscar Winners Ariana DeBose, Sian Heder and Jane Campion at the 94th Academy Awards

It was a historic night for women in film. Jane Campion, the revered New Zealand-born Australian director, became the third female film-maker ever and the second in a row to win best director in the 94-year history of the Academy Awards.

Director Sian Heder won the night's top gong, taking home best picture and best adapted screenplay, for Coda – just her second feature-length film and the first win for Apple. And earlier in the night, Ariana DeBose became the first queer woman of colour to win best supporting actress. At just 20, Billie Eilish won for best original song, and costume designer Jenny Beavan picked up her third Oscar for her work on Cruella.

But in the end a night of momentous achievements was overshadowed by an act of violence between two men.

The mood in Hollywood's Dolby theatre was muted and shocked after actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, after Rock compared Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who is bald and has alopecia, to GI Jane.

"Wow, Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me," Rock said, as Smith returned to his seat. Smith then yelled: "Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth!" Smith later apologised to the Academy, but not to Rock.

Some attempted to refocus attention on other moments in the three-hour ceremony. The New Zealand prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, sent her congratulations to Campion, saying: "Thank you for once again putting New Zealand on the world stage, displaying just how beautiful our country is with her talent, her skills and her storytelling. It's a phenomenal outcome and I know we're all very proud of her."

"Let's take a moment from talking about men not being able to control their rage – because that happens all the time," one Twitter user said. "What doesn't happen all the time? Women being nominated, much less winning, Best Director. Congratulations Jane Campion."

"Jane Campion thrilled she's no longer the first result when you Google 'Oscars Serena Williams scandal'," said another Twitter user, referring to Campion's Bafta speech that saw her accused of diminishing the achievements of the Williams sisters. Campion later apologised for her "thoughtless comment".

Campion had already made Oscars history by becoming the first female director to be nominated twice in the category, having been previously nominated in 1994 for The Piano. She did not win in 1994, but did take home best original screenplay and was the first female film-maker to receive the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

With nominations in 12 categories, The Power of the Dog had started out as the 2022 Academy Awards' frontrunner. However, it slunk home with just one. Campion now joins Kathryn Bigelow and last year's winner Chloé Zhao as the only female winners of the best director category.

Another lovely moment lost in the world of Men Behaving Badly:

LADY GAGA and LIZA MINNELLI on

Oscar viewers and audience members may have been too stunned by the slap heard around the world to pick up on a quieter, memorable moment between the best picture presenters, the legendary Liza Minnelli and Lady Gaga, when announcing CODA's remarkable win.

To cap a chaotic night, Minnelli took the Oscar stage Sunday to present the night's biggest award with Gaga. Onstage, Minnelli, 76, who won for lead actress for Cabaret 50 years ago, received a standing ovation. To which Gaga noted, "You see that? The public, they love you."

Minnelli then expressed some confusion over the cue cards, which prompted Gaga to hold her hand and say, "I got it."

Addressing the crowd, Gaga said of the Oscar winner next to her, "You know how I love working with legends, and I'm honored to present the final award of the evening with a true show business legend."

When Minnelli began to introduce the nominees, Gaga jumped in to finish her sentences as the films played in the montage. On the hot mic, Gaga was heard whispering, "I gotcha," as an appreciative Minnelli laughed and they held hands.

    "I know," Minnelli replied.

When the camera returned to the pair, Minnelli said excitedly, "Hi everybody! I'm so happy to be here, and especially with you," she said, to Gaga. "I'm your biggest fan."

Minnelli then announced CODA as the winner, marking the moment that Apple's indie movie with a mostly deaf cast made history as the first streaming movie to claim the film industry's top honor.

I thought it time to forget about being slapped during the Oscar presentations, but then I ran across this:

May be an image of one or more people and text that says 'Middle Age Riot @middleageriot Donald Trump conspired with the Russian government to steal an election, blackmailed the Ukrainian president to dig up dirt on his political rival, sexually assaulted dozens of women, committed tax fraud, and incited an insurrection but nobody slapped him.'

Love the memes and would like to add one more scenario to the trump one where he asks what have you got to lose? I would ad my f****** mind.

Love the above one because I do think he listens to his wife's diatribes and they have some negative impact on his rulings. The fact that we have 2 rapists sitting on the SC is the most galling though. He needs to resign, not recuse himself. She needs to be indicted for her machinations regarding the election fiasco.

While I applaud Jane Campion for her accomplishment, I honestly hated The Power of the Dog. I kept hoping it would get better as I watched but it did not. Nightmare Alley had an all star cast and it was such a disappointment that so much talent could produce such a loser of a film. Halfway through I tole my DSIL I knew the ending (I did not disclose then) and I was right.

What happened at the Oscars was a travesty of the power awarded to celebrities. I agree with what Ruth posted and fall back on the advice "use your words" and not other means of defusing an unpleasant situation. I do feel for Jada though but feel her husband's defense was inappropriate and the Academy does need to take some sort of action for his actions. Also the comedian doing the pat down was inappropriate as were her thoughts about other participants. It was above raunchy.

    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar writes:

"When Will Smith stormed onto the Oscar stage to strike Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife's short hair, he did a lot more damage than just to Rock's face. With a single petulant blow, he advocated violence, diminished women, insulted the entertainment industry, and perpetuated stereotypes about the Black community. That's a lot to unpack. Let's start with the facts: Rock made a reference to Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, as looking like Demi Moore in 'G.I. Jane,' in which Moore had shaved her head. Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia, which causes hair loss. Ok, I can see where the Smiths might not have found that joke funny. But Hollywood awards shows are traditionally a venue where much worse things have been said about celebrities as a means of downplaying the fact that it's basically a gathering of multimillionaires giving each other awards to boost business so they can make even more money. The Smiths could have reacted by politely laughing along with the joke or by glowering angrily at Rock. Instead, Smith felt the need to get up in front of his industry peers and millions of people around the world, hit another man, then return to his seat to bellow: 'Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth.' Twice. Some have romanticized Smith's actions as that of a loving husband defending his wife. Comedian Tiffany Haddish, who starred in the movie 'Girls Trip' with Pinkett Smith, praised Smith's actions: '[F]or me, it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives.' Actually, it was the opposite. Smith's slap was also a slap to women. If Rock had physically attacked Pinkett Smith, Smith's intervention would have been welcome. Or if he'd remained in his seat and yelled his post-slap threat, that would have been unnecessary, but understandable. But by hitting Rock, he announced that his wife was incapable of defending herself—against words. From everything I'd seen of Pinkett Smith over the years, she's a very capable, tough, smart woman who can single-handedly take on a lame joke at the Academy Awards show. This patronizing, paternal attitude infantilizes women and reduces them to helpless damsels needing a Big Strong Man to defend their honor least they swoon from the vapors. If he was really doing it for his wife, and not his own need to prove himself, he might have thought about the negative attention this brought on them, much harsher than the benign joke. That would have been truly defending and respecting her. This 'women need men to defend them' is the same justification currently being proclaimed by conservatives passing laws to restrict abortion and the LGBTQ+ community. Worse than the slap was Smith's tearful, self-serving acceptance speech in which he rambled on about all the women in the movie 'King Richard' that he's protected. Those who protect don't brag about it in front of 15 million people. They just do it and shut up. You don't do it as a movie promotion claiming how you're like the character you just won an award portraying. But, of course, the speech was about justifying his violence. Apparently, so many people need Smith's protection that occasionally it gets too much and someone needs to be smacked. What is the legacy of Smith's violence? He's brought back the Toxic Bro ideal of embracing Kobra Kai teachings of 'might makes right' and 'talk is for losers.' Let's not forget that this macho John Wayne philosophy was expressed in two movies in which Wayne spanked grown women to teach them a lesson. Young boys—especially Black boys—watching their movie idol not just hit another man over a joke, but then justify it as him being a superhero-like protector, are now much more prone to follow in his childish footsteps. Perhaps the saddest confirmation of this is the tweet from Smith's child Jaden: 'And That's How We Do It.' The Black community also takes a direct hit from Smith. One of the main talking points from those supporting the systemic racism in America is characterizing Blacks as more prone to violence and less able to control their emotions. Smith just gave comfort to the enemy by providing them with the perfect optics they were dreaming of. Many will be reinvigorated to continue their campaign to marginalize African Americans and others through voter suppression campaign. As for the damage to show business, Smith's violence is an implied threat to all comedians who now have to worry that an edgy or insulting joke might be met with violence. Good thing Don Rickles, Bill Burr, or Ricky Gervais weren't there. As comedian Kathy Griffin tweeted: 'Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters.' The one bright note is that Chris Rock, clearly stunned, managed to handle the moment with grace and maturity. If only Smith's acceptance speech had shown similar grace and maturity—and included, instead of self-aggrandizing excuses, a heartfelt apology to Rock."

Bravo, Kareem. What a wonderful explanation of this horrible moment from his perspective. So much truth in what he writes, though violence by any race is not justifiable. Jada is more than capable to take care of herself as evidenced by her past vocalizations with her sharp tongue. Her face reflected what she thought of this "in poor taste" joke but the fact that Will laughed at it has been glossed over. Being a public figure means accepting all the pleasant and not so pleasant comments that accompany this privilege, so Will was out of bounds with his reaction. His acceptance speech was Will Smith touting "Will Smith" nothing more and nothing less, but then he seemed to be displaying the same behavior he exhibited when he played the Prince of BelAir. To justify his actions as reflecting those of Richard Williams was an insult to the man and his family. I am not sure how Venus and Serena felt about Will's actions and his denigration of their father. Is Philly proud of him? Hell no, this is not the way we would choose our city to be reflected.

May every soul that touches mine—be it the slightest contact—get from there some good; some little grace; one kindly thought; one aspiration yet unfelt; one bit of courage for the darkening sky; one gleam of faith to brave the thickening ills of life; one glimpse of brighter skies beyond the gathering mists—to make this life worthwhile. -George Eliot
