We're all done with the pandemic, but the pandemic is not done with us. "Ready to move on" = Not even willing to put on a mask in indoor public places in order to help their community. What a terrible hardship for them. Boo hoo hoo. I bet those stupid immunocompromised people are done with cancer (or whatever else) and wish they could move on.

(Sarcasm--not actually calling immunocompromised people stupid!)

I have a dear relative who leans toward believing covid is a hoax meant to bring the country down, masks are ineffective and bad for you (even though this has been debunked), their rights are being attacked, blah blah blah. But on the other hand this person loves me and wanted to protect me as a high-risk person. It was like even though they think the medical folks in general are lying, they couldn't believe my awesome and caring doctor would be false and uninformed. They were high-risk too, but refused to acknowledge it. So this created some mental conflict for them, but care for me won out and they grudgingly wore the mask and complainingly got vaccinated This is a good person who is misinformed and/or has reasons for believing their own version of reality. Also they said that quality of life for them was the priority, and that it was worth taking some risk to go out and do things, see people. I could respect that (although it still did not address responsibility to the larger community), but it did mean I had to be more cautious with them. Also I was very worried about them because they would not get prescriptions and groceries delivered, etc. When I was fully vaccinated we resumed indoor unmasked visits as I had promised. Now that we are vaccinated and masks are not required, no way are they wearing one again. I won't discuss covid things much with them because it will be a fruitless argument. It has been interesting.

Sadly, the nonvaccinated folks (by choice) that do not wear masks are putting their lives at risk for COVID19 and variants.

I just hate to see preventable death for anyone.

Me too. And, once again, they are not only risking themselves but the rest of the world by possibly contributing to the development of more aggressive mutant strains, because the more replications, the more possible mutations, as we know all too well.

Late last year before the vaccine was available, my adult nephew tried to engage me in a “discussion" on Facebook about my choice to get the vaccine as soon as it was available. Politely but quite firmly, I told him that “you and I have different opinions but I choose not to debate on social media as my energy is better spent elsewhere." (exact words). I said I respected his right to do as he saw fit and asked him to respect my right to do as I saw fit. Then I wished him the very best. He was receptive and that was it. He may have thought I was just a little auntie senior citizen who needed to have things mansplained to me. I wasn't havin' it.

That's my approach, tho. By conscious choice, I don't debate on social media as it is a waste of my precious time. I do not believe anyone's mind will be changed that way.

ShetlandPony, love your comments! I am glad your relative cares about you deeply to get vaccinated despite different views.

Divine, I don't debate on social media either. I tweeted my concern about retailers not requiring masks and somehow opened the floodgates and attracted all sorts of comments. Luckily twitter filtered most of these, but it still saddens me how selfish some people are.

I heard a scientist say that freedom does not give you the right to not do what you’re obligated to do. People confuse freedom with personal preference. there seems to be a lot of people who don’t do anything for the greater good. I did talk to a few people who said that as soon as they said the grandchildren would not be available to anyone who didn’t have a vaccine they got one even though they were Jehovah’s Witness or some other religion that normally prevented them from this decision. I think the carrots are good. I also called Trader Joe’s in my neighborhood and asked them what their policy was they said they would not require masks and it was the honor system they were not allowed to ask people if they’ve been vaccinated. on the other hand he said only one person that showed up without a mask all the employees were still wearing one and everybody but this one person was wearing one. I called my local upscale market that I love and they said they are independent and they are keeping the mask mandate no one is allowed without a mask so I said OK I will continue to shop there. I think it’s important that our opinions are heard I realize I live in an area where people are a bit smarter about this then some other places in the country, but, I think it is worthwhile to call businesses and let them know if you are able.

Nkb, Trader Joe's has to adhere state mask policy rather than corporate. What CDC did was to delegate to the state/local public health agencies and private businesses. I believe Costco & Starbucks both said if the state/local has mask mandate, their local stores will require masks. LA county has warned all the retailers CA still has mask mandate until 6/15. Make sure you tell your TJ manager!

Good idea about calling, Nkb; and good point about checking local rules, Chowdog. I talked to the owner of my local yoga studio a couple weeks ago and she seemed fuzzy on what exactly the guidelines were and where to get information. She was feeling caught between students who wanted masks and students who did not want masks.

That seems like a wise choice, Divine, not to enter into a debate like that.

I wouldn't worry as much, but the fact that antimetabolites like Xeloda, (which I am on), can cut the efficay of the vaccines to 1/5 of normal people....makes me continue to double mask and hibernate.

exbrnxgrl: I worked at a travel immunization clinic. Only Yellow Fever had an official card, issued by Health Canada and glued into the clinic's vaccination booklets. Everything else were just stamps, date and the clinic director (an MD) signature (also stamped) Yes, I fear there will be fake vaccine cards. Idiots. My neighbourhood and other areas outside the 'hood are still all masking up. No word on when the mandate here will expire. Vaccinations are picking up as supplies improve. Maybe Biden can send some of his surplus here. :-)

Canada is still trying to get as many people as possible getting the first dose. So we are having to wait more than the manufacturers' recommendations of 21-28 days.

Elderberry- I sure hope that you get more. Biden is a bit constrained by some stupid rule that T put in that companies can not give or sell our vaccine supply to other countries, so Biden has been "lending" vaccines. I think going forward that may expire or something may change so not an issue. .

    hi!

Since I am only on a hormonal treatment, I chose to get the vaccine. I am still immune compromised because of low IGG. So I feel I must wear a mask everywhere outside my home accept in outdoors. I have one son who is dragging his feet getting the jab- but he had covid in Jan ( I caught it from him) so he still has some immunities. His daughter had covid too, so I feel comfortable not wearing masks around themnow that I am vaccinated. It is a personal choice. I have friends who are refusing to get the jab so I honor that by staying my distance.

Chowdog- good to know- I think businesses are a bit confused- I saw that the mask mandate in California will be lifted on June 15.

    Elderberry,

My yellow WHO card had all my vaccines recorded in it, even my last smallpox back in 1977. I was a Peace Corps volunteer, followed by a stint as a Pan Am flight attendant . The smallpox vaccines are no longer given as it’s considered eradicated. However, if you ever saw what smallpox can do, to those who survive, you’d be the first in line to get a vax should it ever raise it ugly head

I live in California and our mask mandates are supposed to be lifted on June 15. Some businesses have already done away with mask requirements which has me very concerned. I'm stage 4, currently on Afinitor. My immune system is noticeably compromised. I read and had my oncologist confirm that although I'm vaccinated, due to my low T-cell count the vaccine is only about 40% effective. I just picked up dinner from a restaurant where no face masks were worn by the employees. Now I don't want to eat the dinner. My husband took our car in for an oil change this morning at a GM Dealer and nobody, INCLUDING MY HUSBAND, was wearing a mask or adhering to social distancing.. We just had a heated discussion (ok, it was a big fat voices raised argument) about how he could have exposed me to COVID. I don't want to be around him. I don't know what to do. It's Friday and I can't call my doctor. I'm sitting here in tears. I'm sick and tired (literally) of cooking all my meals with delivered groceries. Any advice or shared experiences would be helpful. I guess at this point I just wait it out with fingers crossed. I plan to ask my oncologist to order an antibody test on Monday.

    Breathein....

I hear your concern. I think it is a great idea to check your immunities. I hope it gives you some peace. I understand your cautiousness, I was like that before I got covid and the vax. I hope you find a place of comfort in your life as you fight cancer and avoid covid.

This article was interesting about an immune compromised doctor who got a third shot

I am trying to be safe where I live. Pretty good about masking here, but getting much more lax. I had covid in January, just got my 2nd Pfizer shot, wear a mask while shopping and indoors but don’t wear one outside like the park or walking the neighborhood.

I recently had an unvaccinated friend visit me outside on my patio and she asked to give me a hug and before I knew it I agreed. I just want my life back but I want to be safe. I have pretty good bloodwork, but must take monthly IVIG infusions to keep those levels up to fight infections. Stupid covid. Stupid cancer

Thank you AlabamaDee. Your words are comforting. I'm so tired of this situation. I would love to rip my mask off and live my life. I guess I'll go back to being grateful for every single day I have. After I was vaxxed I wanted to make travel plans...with masks off I feel like I'm needing to go back in quarantine...so frustrating.

BreatheIn, you are the very reason I wish people would just wear the damn mask. It's not a great hardship. It's not fair that you have to go backinto quarantine because others aren't willing to do a little thing to protect children, immunocompromised people, etc. Your husband needs to get with the program and be considerate of your health status and your worry, and act as if he lives with someone who is immunocompromised. And you can ask your friends to cooperate as well, and meet outside and wear a mask, etc. One more thing -- it appears that catching covid from surfaces is even less likely than previously thought, so maybe you can read up on it and at least get more comfortable about that. I am less stressed about it than I was.

Breathin, I wear a mask while I am at home near my family (since the pandemic started), they are now fully vaccinated but don’t fully committed to mask as soon as they got vaxx. No argument no offense I do care about my health period.
I met a fully vaccinated friend in an outdoor coffee shop but I didn’t eat/drink and my mask was on! Few times we ordered food, and I heated my food up in the microwave for 3 minutes before I ate! When I sit in the car at least 2 windows should be halfway down. I do grocery shopping with 2 masks on and make it quick. Like many of us, my only outings have been health appointments for over a year. I do short Walking around neighborhood with a mask in my pocket ready in case social distancing can’t happen. I like gardening but having bad back pain prevents me. Nowadays there are tons of resources available online just keep your head busy out of stupid virus. If your clinic doesn’t provide support group, there are other clinics that offer this (now via zoom) so you can meet up with others and exchange your experience how to handle Covid situation with people who have same conditions as ours. Susan g Komen offers many free resources, like online meditation etc. you might want to look it up.

Snow-Drop...that sounds like me. I haven't been in a restaurant for a year and don't know when I will ever go into one again. Once a month I might get take-out.

I had my car inspected and auto-butlered and picked it up yesterday. And I wore my mask all of the way home since I don't know if the guys working on it wore masks or not.
