Will you get the covid vaccine!

My 2nd dose of pfizer has been postponed due to pfizers inability to deliver what they promised. 2 weeks ago Canada got 20% of their promised doses. Last week we got 0%. The EU got their doses as promised. It would be interesting to read the contracts and see why we were shorted when others were not. I am rebooked for day 39, just within the 42 day window. I am not confident that there will be a dose of pfizer for me then either. The morale in my hospital drops as the outbreaks on our units increase. It's devastating.

Got my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine Jan 20. Got the shot at 6:30 at night and had to work next day. Arm was very sore and definitely felt off and a little fluish for about 24 hours. Then as quick as symptoms came they were gone. Get second dose Feb 10. I’m working at a state run vaccination site which made me eligible for the vaccine. I check people in and confirm appts and eligibility. It’s very rewarding to be helping but yet heartbreaking as there’s not enough vaccines for everyone. Everyone deserves and should be able to get the shot. I’ve had to turn away elderly without appts and people with pre existing conditions (as not defined yet in NY) and people who fake paperwork to try and get elderly parents in. And then also turn away young healthy people who fake paperwork as well. The vaccine roll out has been an absolute mess.

chowdog,
I'm in CA. Though stage IV, I am not immune compromised and not quite 65 but I am a public school teacher and I feel that my job is my best chance of getting the vaccine. We're scheduled to reopen on a part time basis on 2/22!

exbrnxgrl,
unfortunately, my county is slow as a turtle. We are way behind surrounding counties and are still vaccinating phase 1a and mostly > 75. There is only one hospital in the county vaccinating people > 65. People are driving over an hour to other counties to get vaccinated. There is no centralized booking system like other counties do. You have to be on hold for hours or keep refreshing websites for appointments. I finally managed to get appointment for my elderly parents yesterday. Like I said, it feels like winning a lottery. My sector is also not considered essential. I guess I have to wait. It’s just frustrating.

Recent news:
“THURSDAY, Jan. 28, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- In a new guidance statement from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), recommendations are presented for COVID-19 vaccination of cancer patients.
Noting that large cohort studies have shown that cancer patients are at high risk for COVID-19-associated complications, indicating a clear need for vaccination, Steve Pergam, M.D., M.P.H., from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and colleagues from the NCCN COVID-19 Vaccination Advisory Committee developed recommendations relating to vaccination for cancer patients.
According to the guidance document, patients with active cancer on treatment, those planning to start treatment, and those immediately posttreatment should be prioritized for vaccination and immunized when vaccination is available...."
I read the NCCN document, and “treatment" in this recommendation for prioritization includes chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. It does not include hormonal therapy alone.

Thanks for the link, Shetland. Maybe people should share this with their oncologists in an attempt to obtain the vaccine. Hopefully this will help, but who knows with the availability so limited.

I thought I would add my experience to those who have received their vaccinations. I work in healthcare in an acute care facility. I had my second dose today of Moderna. With my first dose I had no side effects, about 12 hours from my second dose I have a bit of fatigue and the chills going on. There's no fever but I admit I also took a couple of Tylenol proactively. The chills are gone but now I'm hot and of course I can't sleep. I don't feel great but so far it isn't terrible. I am reminded of a news article of someone who ran the gamut of side effects yet even while he was shivering, sweating then hogging a blanket again he told his wife, "This is still 100 times better than getting COVID." It made me smile to have it put to simply yet eloquently. While huddling under a blanket, then throwing it off, I repeat it to myself and find no complaint

Tomorrow will mark 1 week post 2nd Pfizer vaccine. Other than a sore arm, I felt just fine. Well, I take that back. Physically, I only had a sore arm. Mentally, I’m breathing a huge sigh of relief. I will still mask and practice all protocols, but I am definitely breathing a little easier now that I’ve had both. My body doesn’t need anything additional to deal with. I’m confident and happy with my decision to become vaccinated.
-
Very happy to hear that many have had two vaccines already! Woohoo!!!!
I am still in PA with no vaccines currently available to A1 status in my location. I received notice from my school that they plan to go "all in" the first full week of April. I had hoped to be vaccinated by then, but I have little hope left and for me it is 50/50 as to whether I will be vaccinated or a statistic? I have done all I can to pre-register for the vaccine and now I am just taking it one day at a time.
The saddest part is that it didn't have to be this way!
-
Hi Mavericksmom, I live in PA too and I am on my county's list, but who knows when I will get an appointment. The county put out an email saying, while waiting, check out your local pharmacies. I googled Where can I get the covid-19 vaccine near me and after putting in my zip code at goodrx.com CVS popped up. A few neighbors went in to Delaware and were able to be vaccinated at Walgreens. I read where Walmart, and Rite Aid will be receiving the vaccine. Cancer is on the prevaccination checklist questionnaire. Maybe there is hope if the government gets its act together.

I am in quarantine because I tested inconclusive last week, which they consider a positive. I have a tight chest and a cough, that is all. Have since tested negative twice and am waiting on results for my 4th test! I can't go back to work in my school till quarantine is over, which will be Monday, the 15th. Yesterday, the district announced our Tier 1B, school employees, could sign up for today and tomorrow. Except they won't let me. I am SO bummed. 63, can't get it. I should be eligible in 30 days when they have the next sign up. Just have to pray I don't really have it, I really wanted the vaccine, if for nothing else, a little psychological support. Just have to wait. Again.
-
oh, bummer on the vaccine but just get healthy! My county is low on vaccines and are still working on the 1A folks. I will be returning to in person teaching on 2/22 and wish we were on the 1B’s but I’m so excited to have actual students in the classroom that I can live with the delay. I will be 65 in about 7 months. Take care
-
I got my second dose of Moderna (in my gluteal muscle) Friday afternoon. Fever for about 24 hours. Headache. I am starting to feel like myself a little bit now. VERY happy to have been vaccinated. I am a health care professional, and only waited because of my treatment schedule. My poor DH is feeling a lot of vaccine envy!
-
yeslama,
That sounds like the type of reaction my dd got after her second vaccine. My county finally opened appointments up for teachers, after 2/28. With three devices in front of me and texting with two of my colleagues, we all managed to get appointments. It was crazy and when I got a confirmed appointment I felt like I’d won the lottery. I’ll have my first jab on 3/2. Who thought that I’d be looking forward to a shot! Glad you’re feeling better!
-
I will get my second dose later today in the US. I work at a hospital and could get it sooner as am employee than through my doctors office as a patient. My MO is ok with me getting it during chemo. I had the Pfizer vaccine and had no reaction after dose #1. Hoping for no reactions after #2! Good luck to us all

I am SO jealous of all of that have been able to get the vaccine. Congratulations to you!!!
-
I just had Moderna Shot #1 on Thursday. I had a really sore arm and felt very COLD that night. I slept most of Friday, and was fine after that. I am so happy grateful, and relieved. I feel like it's turning the corner on the way back to normal!
-
I received my 2nd pfizer dose today before my evening shift (health care worker). So far so good but have the next 3 days off (my regular schedule) in case I need to rest.
Update: Dose 2 was easier for me, bit of arm soreness and a red firm area for 2 days. (Pfizer doses 39 days apart due to pfizer reducing promised amounts).
Thankful and happy to have received both doses already.
-
Got the 1st dose of Pfizer in NYC today. Doing fine so far
-
Until end of February, there was an option for scheduling Covid vaccine appointment via mychart based on eligibility. well that disappeared, I noticed it today, just great, another disappointment from this lame cancer center!!! So my only option would be through our county program.
Has anyone received j&j? I was thinking it is only one shot, less hassle. any idea would be appreciated.
-
I'm also interested to hear of people's experiences with the J&J shot. I also like the idea of getting one shot and being done.
I'm young, so I have not been eligible yet, but I'm also immune suppressed due to treatment. My MO said I should become eligible in mid to late March, but then it's a matter of availability.
-
My husband and I will be eligible in 3 weeks. I am hoping for the Miderna or Pfizer vaccine but will take whatever I can get. The J&J vaccines arrive in my state this week and I am guessing that once that happens they will be the predominate ones given due to sheer volume arriving. It does seem the J&J one is going to be just fine and provide good protection so I need to back off my preference of one of the other two. I have NO clue how to register for it. It looks like we can't do it through mychart, but that would be so much easier. This whole thing is just stressful. It seems confusing, not well thought out, and I don't even know what documentation I need to "prove" I have cancer to get the vaccine when I do manage to figure the rest of it out and show up for it. I am SO anxious for my little family (includes my 16 year old) to get vaccinated.
-
First Pfizer vaccine is done! My second appointment is booked. Educators began getting vaccinated this week and we were out in force at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49’ers. Everything was very well organized and things moved quickly despite the crowds. The atmosphere was almost festive
-
Congratulations exbrnxgrl, I think it was great that the governor expedited educators turn to open schools.
One more news, blue shield Ca is taking vaccine distribution, our county is hopeful that things will get better with BS as the state provider. By now, in our county, the plan is to save the remaining vaccines for second shots, so no more appointments and nobody knows for how long.
-
Snowdrop,
My district was already open, part time, even before vaccines were available to us but I’m glad I’m half way to being fully vaccinated
-
Walgreens by my house is doing walk ins tomorrow evening for the J&J vaccine. I am praying I am able to get it. It isn't my first choice for vaccine but I am desperate and will happily take it. Please, if you think of it, sending some good wishes and/or prayers that I am able to get it. I plan to be there 45 min before they start. I hope it is early enough. If any of you have done walk ins or know anyone who has and have advice on how early to get there, please let me know.
Update: Update: So I called to see what time people usually start lining up. Turns out it really isn't a walk in, I was given wrong info....they have 5 vaccines and reserved them. That option wasn't given to me earlier. I started crying and I guess the lady felt bad for me and she took my name and number and said she would call me if they had any left over vaccines (of any kind). I can't believe how stressful this is!
-
I wasn't sure I wanted the vaccine but after all of my friends were getting it I decided to also. I just happened to check the Wal-Mart website last Friday and easily (surprisingly) got an appointment for that Sunday. My Wal-Mart has a big (new last year) health clinic. They dropped their appointments just that Friday afternoon so I was truly simply lucky.
The shot hurt a bit and my arm hurt all day but Tylenol worked for that. I also had a weird fuzzy headache all day. Didn't feel bad, nor great, all Monday but by Tuesday I noticed that I 'felt great" so it wasn't bad at all. I thought I wanted the Pfizer as my friend's said their reactions were less than the Moderna but I got the J & J and I'm fine with that. My mom got her 2nd Pfizer yesterday and is feeling fine (she's 84). I'm generally anti-vaxx. Listening to President Biden as I type and believe the vaccines will help everyone overall.
J~

Thank you to all who have gotten the Covid19 vaccine. It’s upsetting to see how different states/counties have handled it. I have had my first dose and have an appointment for the second. We are lucky to have vaccines and even more fortunate that most people take vaccines not only to protect themselves but to protect those who can’t be vaccinated. Every single medical professional I have heard urges everyone to take whichever brand they can get, so I hope folks heed that advice.
Most of us have never seen the damage that vaccine preventable diseases can inflict.I was a Peace Corps volunteer in a country with very low vaccination rates. Polio, smallpox*to name a few are not pretty diseases.
* I received a smallpox vaccine just as the WHO declared smallpox to be eradicated. Clearly, this was not true in my host country!

I had my annual MO appt last week, which was simultaneous with Florida opening up eligibility for those considered “extremely vulnerable” to COVID. I am 64, won’t be 65 until Oct, so have not been eligible up to this point based on age. Due to chronic depressed WBC counts, asthma in the spring from seasonal allergies, and a pending cardiac workup my MO wanted me vaccinated ASAP. I have been of two minds because I also have extensive and severe allergies to many drugs - wasn’t sure whether to be more scared of the vaccine response or COVID. I have been home for almost exactly a year, I can count on two hands the number of times I have left my house, mostly for medical or dental appts. My MO gave me the certification that allows me to vaccinate so I decided to do it, he is fully aware of my drug sensitivities and felt it would be ok. I registered with the state of FL, but could not get an appt, they have been quite difficult to get locally, and now with this new category open it is even more competitive. Additionally within the last 72 hours or so, 60-65 has opened. I was resigned to waiting longer, but received an invitation to a vaccination event through one of our local med centers just for those deemed “extremely vulnerable” - yay! Had my first Pfizer yesterday, the process was totally handled by nurses and docs because of the particular population being vaccinated, super organized and easy. There were a LOT of people there, so I am glad not just for myself but for them as well! I have my appt for my second visit. I was a little unsteady last night but otherwise fine. My arm was a bit sore this morning upon waking up, but took a warm shower and no more discomfort. I actually had a skin cancer removed in surgery this morning about six inches away from the vaccination site (no choice of arm due to lymphedema) so I’m glad it’s not sore! My husband was vaccinated in early Feb for his job (military) so we are a vaccinated household - feeling lucky about that as so many are trying so hard to get it done. My adult daughter who is local has had symptomatic COVID, my adult son in another state has been vaccinated for work (paramedic) as well. I am hopeful that my DH and I can visit him this summer - I haven’t seen him since Oct 2019. Wishing good luck to all trying to get this done, hang in there!
