You guys are amazing!!! I've been watching this thread ... and the beauty of the the squares, and the resulting quilts. I'm soooo glad that dressmaker will be the receipient of one of the quilts. This is a truely heart-warming project.
I don't knit or crochet ... but would happily donate some $$ or buy some yarn for someone else to use for this awesome project. You all sound like you're having sooo much fun.
You're special!!!
Sending big hugs for each of you,
Doreen -
Thanks Doreen...I am having so much fun with this.
Cherryl...I will count squares tomorrow and let you know...Madison...can you count your squares too and we'll see who needs what?
Hugs all
Vickie -
Vickie, I have 44 squares, which does include the original 55 I made, plus those from Cherryl and Denise.
I have borders around my squares and am working on bordering the new squares.
One more row on the afghan I am presently working on, then I am going to run a row of double crochet and single crochet around to anchor it, then I am done.....will post a pic when finished.
Love ya'll, Madison -
I have 73 squares all ready to be sewn together! Should have it ready by Monday. I did a row of double crochet around the one I did too...makes it much nicer and ties it all together.
Love to all
Vickie -
Hi to all,
Vickie and Madison, You are doing such a great job. Vickie, you should get some more squares today or tomorrow. I just keep knitting away, so let me know if and when you want me to stop! Thinking of a couple of sisters to send them to. I'll pm you shortly. It's hard to decide, because all are so special.
Love and Hugs,
Denise -
Madison, I just mailed you some squares..thanks so much to you and Vickie for doing this
-
ok Lisa, up it. What kind of yarn are you buying? It is gorgeous! And is it beginner-friendly?
pals
cheri -
Me too. Each square is a little bit different too. Knit? Crochet?
-
Hi cheri...It is the cheapest yarn...from Walmart..Red Heart Super Saver...Multicolor..only $2.07 a pack
Very beginner friendly..I changed and used No 9 needles and only knitted..no purl
Hugs Lisa -
I agree with Lisa, the most user friendly yarn is the Red Heart Super Saver-100% Acrylic...
This yarn, whether in knit or crochet, holds the shape of the 7 X 9 square.....
Lisa, I look forward to getting your squares. I received some really pretty pink squares that will go really well with the colors you have mailed.
Thanks, Madison -
That's the brand of yarn I bought but my colors aren't those snazzy ones like yours, Lisa. I'll have my dd look for some next time she goes to Sprfld. But you're knitting & I'm...ahem...attempting to crochet so maybe the way you're doing it is what makes it look so cool.

Lisa, tell me again the pattern you are doing for knitting. I am tired of crocheting and would like to do some knitting. I need to know what size needles and how many you cast on. You said you knit every row but could you do any pattern, like knit one row, purl one? My mom who knits said to ask you since you made them according to the size needed. I really appreciate your help!
-
That's the same yarn that I've been buying. Some multi color and some plain. But I'm here to say that my squares look nothing like Lisa's!
Madison, you said this yarn holds the shape of the 7"X9" square. I've noticed that when I "take off" the finished square I have to stretch it a bit to get the full seven inches. You have some of my squares so let me know if they are holding the 7 x ll or please give me some pointers!
Hugs,
Denise -
Hi Beth:
I cast on 30 stiches with the Red Heart medium worsted #4 acrylic yarn on #9 needles..
When I knit one row and purled one row, the square didn't hold its shape very well.
So I knit each row instead and it kept the shape.
Then you just knit down 9 inches..
and cast off.
Does this help?? -
Thank you so much. I hope I remember how to cast on! I have plenty of medium worsted weight. I may do what Madison said and knit two colors of the baby yarn together to make the tweedy look. I crocheted the sport weight tog and it came out a little bulky. But obviously Vickie was ok with them 'cause I think I saw some in the afghan.
BTW, Vickie, do you want me to post the poem here on the thread? Maybe I can put it in photobucket so everyone can see the background too. -
Lisa, loved your picture. That yarn really makes an interesting pattern. I like the beanie babies in the background. I have 10 lil animals here, I may have to make a mini-afghan for each one. I have 2 different cows, 2 different tigers, a penguin, pink BC bear, grizzly bear, dog, ladybug and a seal.
Madison, I will have about a dozen squares to mail on Monday if you want to PM me your address. If you have plenty of squares, I will send them to Vickie instead. -- Donna in VA -
Hi all...Denise...I got your squares. They are great and I loved your note...the green ones aren't that bad! You made me laugh though. I love all the squares..beautiful colors.
Hi Beth...Yes please post the poem here for all to see...that way I won't lose it again either!! LOL.
Now a question about the straight knifty knitter...how many pegs are you using to start out...I have been just crocheting squares but like using my knifty knitter for the funky yarns as I can't see my stitches when I am crocheting!
I am ok with each and every single square that I get..they are all special as they are filled with love and that's the whole point.
I had a suggestion for the next afghan (after Vicky the dressmaker) but I want it to be a surprise so I will pm everyone tomorrow and see what you think. I think Madison is probably ahead of me so her's will got to Vicky and I'll play catch up this weekend since I am done painting. FINALLY.
Love and hugs to all

Hi Ladies:
I just found this thread tonight.
I'm a life long knitter and crocheter.
I can make squares. How can I help? What is the project you are doing?
My name is Mary. I did my BC battle last year. I'm active in the group that began chemo in October 2005. Would like to participate with you if that is okay.
Mary -
Hi Mary and welcome!
You are more than welcome to join us. We are making 7X9 inch squares of any color you have and they are being sent to either me or Madison and we are sewing them together and sending them to "sisters" in need.
Use any yarn you have except wool as it will shrink and most of all...have fun with it.
So happy to have a new crafter join us.
Whenever you are ready to send squares just pm me or Madison and we'll send you our address. Where are you in New York...I am between Ithaca and Binghamton.
Hugs
Vickie -
My afghan will be finished this weekend and ready for mailing Monday.....
I have started running borders on all the new squares I have received so I can start on a new afghan early next week.
All the squares, colors and textures are making beautiful, unique patterns in the afghans. It is fun to put them together....
Vickie, PM me with your suggestions....We may be thinking the same thing.....
Thank you all so much.
Madison -
Hi all. Vickie and I talked about reworking the words to the Dolly Parton song, "Coat of Many Colors" to include with each afghan. I have to say, it is long enough ago I don't remember who suggested it so I am remiss in giving that credit where it is due. Hope I am forgiven.
I am so glad we have gotten together as one community to do this for deserving members of BCO.
Vickie, I found when I tried to print it it was too big, so I reworked...again! I will email the new one too.
Madison, if you want, PM me your email and I will send it to you as a PDF so you can print it out too.

This is what my first square turned out to look like. lol
I'm having trouble turning it around & starting back down. I looked in the book but I can't tell much from it. My turns are making it bigger & bigger! TeeHee. When I realized it was getting way too wide I continued to crochet just to get the stitch practice. No Vickie, I'm not sending this one! This picture proves to you girls that I have NO craft ablility or talent of any kind. My hearts in the right place, it's my fingers that are all wrong. -
Cheri...your heart is all that matters...nice job for your first square! I am impressed.
Gus (Sue) I got your squares today...they are wonderful. It's so exciting to get the mail and see all the beautiful colors and love you have all put into these squares!

vickie -
Hi girls, I have 8 squares! I'll do a few more and then mail them to whomever needs them. Some may not be useable though! If not, toss them or put a nice pot on them.
Hugs
Liz -
I'm so glad you got my squares, Vickie! I meant to also enclose a check to help with the mailing costs for the afghans, but I have swiss cheese for brains and I forgot. I'll drop it in the mail to you!
Cheri, nice job with your first square! I just taught myself to crochet too, and I can't tell you how many squares I ripped apart before I got one that looked OK. I would do a few rows, realize that I had added stitches and made the square wider, swear a little, angrily rip out a few rows of stitches and then spend the next few minutes muttering about how this "relaxing" activity was going to be the end of me! I've got the hang of it now, but I was pretty fun to watch while I was learning!
Hugs,
Sue -
Thanks Sue. I just started day before yesterday. I'm still trying to figure out those turns. I've done alot of ripping out too. But I think it will be so relaxing when it stops being so frustrating! lol

Hi All,
Finished the afghan this morning and will post pics later today....
I need more squares if anyone has some to send....
Love ya'll Madison -
Hi Again,
Well, our mailman must still be at the Mardi Gras parades because there was no mail in my box yesterday....but left for church this morning AND LOW AND BEHOLD I GOT MAIL
Pat, I did receive your squares...YEA
Okay ladies, I am going to start running black borders around all my new squares, the start stitching an new afghan.
You are all the greatest!!!!
Love Madison -
I hope you don't mind ... I'd like to suggest a special sister to receive one of the Afgans ... I think it would be wonderful if the afghans were sent to sisters who did not receive a quilt. Anyway.... my suggestion is for shepgirl. If you've been reading the mets and recurrances board for awhile you'll have noticed that shepgirl is on top of all the latests treatments and she's always posting the latest efforts and info to keep others informed.
Shepgirl had a seizure while driving her vechicle in January - she totalled the vechicle - no other vechicles were damaged and she was the only one in her vechicle. The seizure was caused by brain mets. She's also been found to have liver mets. I'd love to see her receive one of these afghans.
Here's a thread - look for shepgirl's entry
update about shepgirl
I hope you don't mind suggestions from those who aren't involved with the afghan project!
I don't have her address - but I'm sure we could track it down somehow...
Big hugs to all who are invovled with this wonderful Project!!!
Doreen -
DoreenF,
This afghans are put together WITH LOVE from bc sisters to be given WITH LOVE to any bc sister in need. Your suggestion is wonderful. It breaks my heart to read of someone in such pain. I know that you and all bc sisters want to do something to ease that pain.
Thank you so much.
Love, Madison
