Well hell, just got home from my oncologist and mentioned to the chemo nurse that I was drinking a lot of green tea. She said NO NO, it is an antioxidant which helps cells to grow and divide and we are suppose to be killing cells. Jeez....wonder what else I am doing wrong? I actually switched from my morning coffee to that foul green tea! She said by all means go back to the coffee. Marsha

green tea is very good for you. i was told to limit how much green tea i drank during chemo, but once treatment is done...drink as much as possible. i've also heard that it can make tamoxifen more effective as well. if you have had green tea during chemo, don't worry. i think it takes a lot to really interact with chemo. just limit it from now on until treatment is over and then drink up

Yeah that was what she was saying. Now during chemo, NO but she said it was good I drank alot BEFORE chemo to boost my immune system. And of course after makes sense. It is very good for you, just for me, NOT right now. Marsha

A lot of 'experts' recommend 4 cups of green tea a day for its anti-cancer benefits (not during chemo I know). It is yucky, but I try since it's so good for you.

I had heard that too much green tea can go the opposite way, ie, be detrimental to you not beneficial. but of course noone is saying how much is too much.

you talk about not drinking green tea when getting chemo, what about if you are on aromosin???

I just yesterday got a HUGE box in the mail from my sis, she knows i love tea, Bigelow and mainly Consant Comment, caff and decaff..but this box his massive any kind you can imagine, frm vanilla, vanilla carmel, a good amt has the kind also in green , not my fav, but its there.

if you like it go for it, or try it, I also think everyhing in moderation is best of anything.

I have been taking Green Tea Capsules 500 mgs (one capsule a day) to avoid drinking so much tea but of course I am not on chemo. I purchased them at a health food store and for those who don't like the taste of green tea this might be the way to go.

Nobody told me not to drink green tea during chemo. I didn't drink alot but I did drink it. On the Arizona green tea bottle some have a note that it is recommended during chemo. I was shocked when I read that so I drank it. Should I worry?

OK girls didn't mean to start a panic. My onc nurse said NO not during chemo. Green tea is a cancer fighter, but the chemo is a cancer killer and we don't want to counteract that. Drink lots before chemo and after your treatments are done but if you are currently ON a treatment plan with chemo, put it away. Marsha

Wow, this is weird. When my initial tx plan called for taxotere, the chemo intake nurse actually told me to drink as much green tea as I can stand! Well, my tx plan was changed and I can't stand the taste of green tea...

I occasionally take a green tea capsule, though.

I don't think they really know if it hurts or helps to take anti-oxidants during chemo. I don't believe a clinical trial has ever been done. I think that they are assuming that because green tea has potent anti-oxidants in it that it may help protect the cancer cells from the chemotherapy. Part of the way chemotherapy works is that it causes oxidative stress on the cancer cells and other fast growing cells(what my onc told me). If you are taking in too many anti-oxidants it might interfere with this. My sister-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago and at that time she was told to take vitamin E, C and drink lots of green tea while she was getting chemotherapy. She is as of now cancer free. I wouldn't go all crazy, but a cup or two probably would not hurt during treatment (if you really like it) and is probably a good idea after treatment is finished.

Just giving my 2 cents about green tea. I drink it all the time. But during my chemo my onc told me to lay off it so I did.

If you are on blood thinners, you have to be careful with green tea as it will change the clotting times.

This thread has made me curious about how you all are drinking green tea. Maybe I'm just green-tea-challenged, but everytime I try to committ to drinking more of it, I get bored and disgusted because it comes out weak and tasting like slightly flavored/colored water. Then I end up loading the sugar in and it tastes like sugar water! What's up with that? Maybe the green tea experts here can provide some tips on best brands, brewing methods, and sweetening?

I have a list of foods that have antioxidents I'm not naming them all but the top 10 listed highest to lowest blackberries, walnuts, strawberries, artichoke, cranberries, coffee, raspberries, pecans, blueberries, and ground cloves, green tea is way way down the list. Point is if we're eatting our 5 fruits a day, drinking fruit juices, we're taking in antioxidents.

    Marin,

I have found that the green tea I like best is Celestial Seasonings Raspberry Gardens Green Tea. This is the only kind I seem to like. I am also someone who loves soda (mt. dew being my favorite) and this particular green tea is really good. I never add sugar to it and it tastes pretty good.

I take five of these capsules daily. You want to check the contents--not all green tea extracts are created equal. My Nanturopath told me to take the equivalent of *10* cups of tea a day. Your chemo nurse was very wrong. Actually, they are discovering that anti-ocidents HELP chemo, not hinder it.

That's because he doesn't know diddly about supplements. No medical doctor does--they have one (1) uno nutrition class in all of medical school!

Absolutely true. Blood thinners chanege everything. OTOH, if you get a savvy doctor, and take enough anti-oxidents, you probably won't NEED blood thinners.

The effective element in green tea is NOT the anti-oxident value. It is the polyphenols extracted from the leaves. Your supplement should have as much or more than 60% phlyphenols per 500mg cap. One cap then equalt two cups of tea--I take 5 caps a day. Take them early--they'll give you more energy that you want to deal with later unless you work the night shift.

I don't know. With all the varying opinions I think I'll just lay off during chemo and pick it back up afterwards. To be honest my blood is feeling kinda thin right now with all those cells dying off. LOL Marsha

Carol...I'm still trying to find the Celestial Seasonings Rasberry Green Tea, but it's not carried in any of my local grocery stores. Gonna check Whole Foods next week...

    Marin,

If you're willing to buy in cases (often 6-12 packages per box), you might check out the new grocery on Amazon.com. I've purchased organic food from them and get free shipping on orders of a minimum $ value. The catch is, you get a case. The prices are about equivalent to my local Whole Foods and the convenience makes it worth it. My local Whole Foods is a zoo and often so crowded the shopping is unpleasant. They don't have perishables, but they carry a variety of things that ship well.

I just checked and the Celestial Seasonings Raspberry Green Tea is listed as 6 boxes of 20 bags and in stock. If you don't like the taste of most green teas, you might want to try the Celestial Seasonings Perfectly Pear White Tea. It smells good and white tea is also high in the things you want.

I take the EGCg 200 mg it has 80% catechins and 98% polyphenols? I guess I need to take more thrn one a day. I also buy loose leaf green tea, and mix it with loose leaf peach or rasberry in a tea ball. I also use Stevia as a sweetner. It is from a shrub and isnt suger, but tasts really sweet you can get it a Wall Mart. I do drink at least three cups a day so maby adding one more capsule will get me up to speed on that.

Hi Marsha, This sounds better. Ha. I been taking the Green Tea Dietary supplement capsules. Besides it being good to take for cancer, I am taking it to help lose some weight. It has Oolong tea a fat burner in it. I sure hope this works. Thanks.

    Good luck & God Bless,

I drink 4 cups of green tea daily. I only drink organic and my favorites are jasmine and dragon well. I also drink white tea as my natural health nutritionist told me white tea is as good if not better than green tea. When my stomach is queasy I like my green or white tea with ginger but otherwise I prefer it without any other flavoring. I buy all my tea at my local organic market.

Kris...Thanks for the tip on buying the CS Rasberry tea in quantity. I'm gonna check it out as well as the Dragon Well tea that some are recommending.

I also love the suggestion regarding mixing green tea leaves with other flavored teas...makes it alot more palpable I'll bet. Thanks, Myrna!

Mostly, though, I'm attracted to the idea of green tea supplements because with all of the water that I drink, the restroom has already become 'my second office'
