The diagnosis of metastatic disease should be sufficient to qualify and get expedited approval under the Social Security Compassionate Allowance program. You also need enough work credits during the previous decade.

My on line application was fast tracked and given the OK in ten days. It probably helped that I walked my medical documentation in to the local office. I selected records demonstrating onset of symptoms, the initial treatment and pathology. They assigned a disability date of August 1 so the waiting period meant my first payment came in last month. It is the amount that I would have received at full retirement age. I will be eligible for Medicare in 2 years.

In some cases, they will look back and decide you have already met the requirements which means you might start getting compensation right away (especially if your employment was affected by illness).

I used to process disability claims for SSA and vlnrph’s advice is spot on. I often approved people same day with just the pathology reports they provided. We always tried to give people the earliest date we could medically since cancer doesn’t just pop up one day like an injury would but if people continued to work, the SSA start date was when work ended, other leave or disability was taken, or earnings fell below a certain amount. Another division sorted those things out so I’m not too sure about the non-medical side but make sure you let them know if you had to take time off or needed help to do your job. I do know you can continue to work a little bit with accommodations but can’t earn over a certain amount per month, I think only $1200ish currently. Best wishes to you for a speedy decision!

Hi Thank-you both for the replies......one more question.....can you receive Medicaid and collect SSDI at the same time....I think it's either one or the other....because if you collect SSDI then it may give you money that makes you over the income bracket to collect Medicaid and then you have to use the SSDI money for a supplement insurance plan..........does this sound right ?
