I used to crochet some years ago. Never could knit worth a darn. I think I may even have hooks around here somewhere. Sounds like a nice thing to do while watching tv and I think it's a great cause also. Hmmm may have to try this. I'll let you know if I have any success.

Hi happy hoo....I mean crocheters and knitters. Sorry I haven't made any squares lately but I just found out I need to make another baby afghan! Yup, another niece is having a baby and she just passed the 1st trimester and I am making her a blankie. I also finsihed a scarf for a birthday present (posting on the craft thread).

Will get back to squares in a week or so.

    Hi All,

I have 55 squares that I have completed.

Cherryl, I sent you a PM with my address.

Sue, when you are ready to send squares, let me know and I will send you my address.

    Vickie, how are you?

Ladies, let me know who needs my address.

Our mail has been a little slow in my area due to the Mardi Gras parades....

    Thanks, Madison

    Madison!!!!

55 squares??? You are the champion for sure. I hope to get back to my crochet hooks this week. I took a break to make a couple of stained glass angels as thank-you gifts for the gals who were MY chemo angels. They are all ready to go in the mail, so back to the yarn....

OK Found a book of patterns. Dropped off DS at school this morn. and stopped to buy hooks and yarn. Now I need to look back in the posts to see what size to make the squares. Any color or pattern preferance? The book I have has a lot of different patterns and I remember some as being more fun then others to do. I'll let you know about my progress.

    Sue,

The "squares" are 9 X 7. I did cut a piece of cardboard out to measure my squares.

I have found the easiest pattern is to:

Chain 27......Turn, Double Crochet in 3rd chain from hook, then every chain thereafter.....

Chain 2, then Double crochet in NEXT chain to end of row.

Make SURE to Double crochet in that Chain 2 that was your turning chain, as that is part of the square.

Let me know if you have any problems.

The most difficult thing, I found in the beginning, was how to hold the hook, and yarn in your hands....once you feel comfortable with this, you'll do GREAT.

The most difficult part is the beginning..the chain, turn and first row....after the first row, your hook will be flying!!!!

VICKIE, the afghan is BEAUTIFUL. I do have 55 squares make, well almost 56 now, and am awaiting on some in the mail. Did you use a yarn needle to "stitch" the squares and rows together?

Our mail is a little slow because of the Mardi Gras parades, but will be back on track by Wednesday....

    Thank you all,

    Madison

Just popping in quick to ask for some help. I need a list of all the girls here to send with the afghan tomorrow. I have the "poem" ready but am a bit swamped tonight. I can do it myself tomorrow during work if I have to but could use a hand.
You girls did such a wonderful job...the afghan is washed and in the dryer as we speak. Also pm me as to where this is going and an address. Marisa or Vicky the dressmaker. I think we decided Marisa first and I have almost enough squares to do one for Vicky and have it out in a week or so.
    Love and hugs all around.

LOL I find myself gritting my teeth trying to get the sides perfectly straight. GRRRRRRRR My arm/wrist is hurting too. I am going to do this! One way or another.

Okay, back to this "relaxing" task. Hehehehehe

    Vickie,

My office is closed for Mardi Gras on Tuesday. I plan to work on an afghan all day. We will have mail delivery tomorrow, so I may receive some squares. I have 56 squares made, so if I receive a few more, I'll have enough for an afghan.

I did send you a PM dear sister.

Liz, you can do it. My arm/wrist also get sore.

I need some help. My dd is at wal-mart and is picking me up some yarn and I read to use a "G" hook but she doesn't know whether to get the 5.00 or the 4.25 mm of the hook. Says the 5.00 is rather large. If somebody stumbles across this please pm me so I can call her back.

    Thanks

I would get the 4.25 if that is what is there. If it makes the stitches to big then you can get the next size down. Alot depends on the style of the person crotcheting. I almost always have to go 2 sizes down from what the pattern book says because I'm a loose crotcheter. I'm finding the same is true for knitting. My dishcloth that is supposed to be 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 is turning out the be 10 inches. I will probably have to go with smaller needles to get the right gauge (stitches per inch). But as a beginner, don't worry about gauge, just have fun learning a new craft and making kewl squares for a good cause. Its all good!

Always, thank you. I appreciate it.

I have brand new pretty yarn, 6 what are they called-skeins-laying on the table just waiting for me to start. Hummm. I'M SKEARED! I have NO crafting talent whatsoever. None. I have Madisons beginner book lying there with it. My dd did pick out some nice colors. That pretty light green that I like, purple, and lavender I think. Wish I'd gotten more sleep last night so I wasn't so bleary-eyed. Guess I'll go ahead & start it soon.

Somebody stop me! I just keeping making these long chains and don't know how to turn around & go back. I'll figure it out, if not I'll call a girl here in town for help. But I'd like to learn it on my own so I'd feel like I'd accomplished somehing for a change. I can just go one row down and then turn around & go back thru? Told ya I was all thumbs.
