Liver Mets Question

Good morning...

A couple weeks ago my wife was put on amoxicillin for strep throat infection. Week later we go to her regular infusion. Blood work shows elevated liver enzymes. Does anyone know if amoxicillin can affect the liver?

Nurse practitioner said it can. They told her to stop taking the medicine and come back in a week to retest. She’s going back tomorrow to have blood work done again. Of course we searched internet for confirmation it is the amoxicillin, but little info out there. Hoping you all have some experience and knowledge.

She does have liver Mets so this has us all stressed. Her treatment has been great, breast tumor gone, liver Mets shrinking/controlled and bones healing. We have almost been at this for year. It is a emotional roller coaster. One minutes we aren’t very hopeful, then some test, scan or bloodwork brings back all the worry.

    Yes, antibiotics can affect the liver. The strep could be affecting the liver. TL;DR - There's bunches of stuff that can fiddle with your liver values. Most of us wait to see if a trend is developing - two test cycles up or down, etc. Otherwise, we'd just wear ourselves out, you know?

    I'm thrilled for you guys in that her treatment has been going well. Bear in mind, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Take care of yourselves!

    Liver function rises and falls for all sorts of reasons. I have a growing liver met but my liver function hasn't changed. But if, perchance, I go to Mexico and drink tequila for a week, LFTs go up. Then they come down.

    Try not to stress yourself out. I know this is really hard advice to take, but don't live from blood test to blood test. You need trends before it's time to think about worrying. And then you need a scan before it's really time to worry.

    I'm glad the treatment is going well.

    My liver enzymes and alkaline phosphatase often jump up out of normal range when I am sick and then go back down once I get better. You should get a better sense the next time she has her blood drawn. Hopefully, it is due to the illness or antibiotics.
