I’m always up for a new recipe, vampeyes!
-
That soup looks delicious!
I don't remember bee stings still itching several days after. Maybe it's the number or maybe I'm getting old. Or maybe I didn't usedta take Tamoxifen and could use Benadryl!
-
Pebbles (Flinstone) - LOL, you'll notice that I often give peeps here in our lil' community nicknames....yours was too good to pass up on considering this is a Paleo thread))) Okey dokey, macros....flip on over to page 23 of our thread and check out the tutorial I posted on macro calculation (mid-page, August 9th) It's a matter of choice and regime, but the protein is basically set for most of us. Calculating might seem complicated at first reading, but pretty easy once you get hang if it. If you need help just hit me up any time and we'll get you macro'd
) Thank you so much for returning...the last couple of newbies took off for parts unknown.....think my blabbering put them to sleep
))))))) Desserts....the treat of choice for low carbs would be berries, topped off with a dollop of whipped coconut cream if you're feeling sassy. Other than that there are literally MILLIONS of paleo/primal/Keto etc recipes online....let us know if you're looking for something specific...and check out the recipe web links in my original post. Word of caution, like with any eating regime baked goods etc are calorie laden (especially paleo/primal) and should be kept to a dull roar. Kudos on the honey and choc choices....a cave chick's saviour. Don't forget red wine is another wise indulgence if you partake....another saviour
Keep the questions coming!
)
Vampriella - *drool* you best be posting the soup recipe...looks awesome!! As for your cavecub....is he constipated and having problems passing BMs, or is his stool normal but not everyday? Chia and flax are great....even better is a handful of dried apricots, dried dates or dried prunes (apricots are very effective...make it organic dried though). Looking for your answer to my question before I go further...need a complete pic before giving my 2 cents for a kiddo. Did the Hawaiian spiced cauliflower in the oven today...50/50....could be ok, will post in the morn.
Pixi(dust) - Hiya babydoll! How’s things?
KSuze - Ouch!!! Sounds like you got a few! When I suggested that cave chicks use honey as a sweetener I didn’t mean you had to actually hunt and gather it!!!)))))))) If you have powdered meat tenderizer handy, rub into the stings...works crazy well at reducing pain and itch. I got stung a few years ago by a man-of-war jelly fish...inside of thigh (yikes! Ouch!) went to a pharmacy near the beach and the pharmacist said ‘I can sell you a ten dollar cream that’s so-so, or you can go over to the Piggly Wiggly and get yourself some meat tenderizer” Boy oh boy was he right! My son got stung by a bee last summer and it was the only thing that calmed pain and itch. Might be worth a shot.
I’ll make my way to bed now kids, Fufu news tomorrow...check it out...oh yeah and get the Nikes ready for Workout Wednesday....Hey! I can hear y’all boo’ing!!))) Nite lovelies!!
-
Morning All, here is a link to the recipe - I didn't add the sugar in and I changed potatoes to sweet potatoes, I may have used a red pepper instead of a green because it's what I had. Hope you all enjoy it, I happen to love a lot of Greata's recipes, just have to alter them to my new lifestyle.... http://recipecircus.com/recipes/Phyllis_aka_Filus/...
Egads - as for the cavecub I honestly can't answer most of those questions. At dinner last night (I know great conversation, right?) he stated he doesn't poop everyday. I figured I had better fix this before he becomes like me and needs to rely on a vitamin every night to go number 2!
Junie - How did the port placement go yesterday?
Anyone got any tips on an easy work from home job? Maybe I should go back to school? I don't wanna grow up...haha. I feel too old to go back to school now, I know my brother did it at 40. My body can not handle the house cleaning anymore as much as I love that cash in hand style job I am pooched I think.
You want an idea for next Tuesday's Two Cents Egads? I just read a bunch of people criticize a stay at home mom for wanting to put it on her resume. I would think it would be ok to add it as it explains why she hasn't been working for a company for the last x amount of years.
Well time to get the cubs ready for the bus, that woman I swear gets here earlier and earlier every day!
-
Mornin' Cavies!
Good lord the wind & rain last night!!!…..all good…my car needed washing
))))
Vampriella – Thanks for the recipe post! As for the sugar deletion, yay you!
If you ever find a dish that needs that bit o' sweet to lift the taste use honey or maple syrup…..although in that recipe I don't think its necessary. Umami baby, umami!!
))) On to the cavecub……don't assume he's going to suffer as you do. Before you start handing out the prunes and flaxseed, check his BMs out visually (approaching diplomatically, touchy/private thing for some kids)….are they happening in a regular schedule, smooth, brown, not causing discomfort, dry, hard, bloated, cramps etc…. If all is good then nothing is abnormal….it would just be him. I had to do this with my son when he was around the same age (hormones starting up, makes changes) A poop a day = healthy, is a big ol' myth……he doesn't HAVE to go everyday…..
"There is no generally accepted number of times a person should poop. As a broad rule, pooping anywhere from three times a day to three times a week is normal. Most people have a regular bowel pattern: They'll poop about the same number of times a day and at a similar time of day." Healthline.com
Keep a watch for a few weeks that it's a consistent pattern, and normal looking stool. If he's going at the same time consistently and not suffering any discomfort I'd say it's all good. Don't blame you for worrying, our kids are first priority…..you're a great mum!! One of these days I'm going to post a tutorial on BMs….it's part n' parcel of Paleo….finding the right timing is difficult…..as you said "great conversation eh?" LOL!!
Too old to go back to school?? Darlin, you're NOT too old….and besides, you seem to eat up information and like researching your interests….how is that any different from study? My mother went back to high school at 35 to finally get her diploma so she could go on to university. She got her BA and rounded out top of her class…..walking away with every english lit/poetry award going (man, that was a proud moment!) She did this while raising two kids the same age as yours, part time job and running the household. She always says "they can take my money, house & car but there ain't anyone that can take what I learned away" Yeah, pretty lousy grammar for a english major…..she also can't spell to save her life
))))) Then again, either can I. Do what you love, love what you do…..make your choice something that doesn't feel like work. Career counselling? Look up local community college offerings…call & talk to the student services staff ….find out what your options are for education….and career counseling. These services are usually free….so worth checking out. Hmmmmm, baking/catering courses? Courses that involve your crafts…and can make money? Give em' a call!
Where were you reading about homemakers being criticized for mentioning in their resumes? BCO? Link? Nosy as hell ain't I ? :))))
Sorry for the long reply (not really LOL)….on to the workout post!
P.S. Anyone else notice that getting the Bold and Italics off when posting is IMPOSSIBLE??? grrrrrr
-
It's here!
WORKOUT WEDNESDAY!!! Shut up and squat (and then lunge)!!
Dedicated to JKL, our dedicated gym lifer!
I posted about leaky bladders last week….and how squats, lunges (combined with kegals) were key to obliterating the problem. There are valid concerns about making these moves without blowing out the knees. Done improperly and you'll not only have bad knees, but you'll still be wetting your pants!
PROPER FORM IS ESSENTIAL!!! GO SLOW AND EASE INTO THESE, DOING WHAT YOU CAN....BUILD FROM THERE...
Look in a mirror while workin' it…..are you….
.
and lunges.....
I repeat…..
- Knees behind toes!!
- Pretend you're gripping a pencil with your shoulder blades
- Pelvis relaxed with squats (natural curve, not butt sticking way out there), pushed forward with lunges
- Weight on the heels, not toes!
- Head up, gaze forward
- Check your form every time!
Check your form in a mirror, do a few moves….keep watching the gym or home mirrors as you workout. Done properly and your knees will get stronger, pain free and thank you!
Vids for start up and continuing…..(I started this way)
and....
Lunges...…
and....
Squats and lunges are hard....to master and to continue with BUT, should be an integral part of ANY program....they make ya' strong and keep ya' dry!
So get workin' the S & Q's Cavies!! Yeah, yeah, I know what you're saying...…
Hey! I saw that!!
)))))))))))))
-
What?? I don't have to forage my own honey? Does this mean I don't need to milk my own goats for my organic goal cream?
Thanks for the positioning images and vids.
Vamp, I always have a few people in their 50s in my undergrad classes, and older than that when I teach community college. Lots of older veterans in higher education these days. When I was looking at graduate programs, a woman raised her hand at an info meeting and said to the program director, "Okay, but do you realize I'll be 60 when I finish this program?" He replied without missing a beat, "Do you realize you'll be 60 whether or not you enter this program?" That's stayed with me all these years.
-
Ksuze - that is so very true, but who's going to hire a 60 year old over a 20 something? I should look into it though, thank you.
Egads - WOW that was long! haha buuuut it did contain poop talk so entertaining! I will keep an eye on him, but if smell means anything that boy is healthy! Here is the link: https://www.indeed.com/forum/gen/Resume-Tips/Is-th... I was looking into doing up a resume and googled a job description for a stay at home mom, came across this.
FYI - I was totally making that face at your exercise post. Exercise - HA! I got out for a walk yesterday and managed to do the pinch never stretches, I am calling that a good day! Today I have done the stretches, tomorrow filled with doctor appointments and MRIs -dear God, I can't wait till this year is over!
ETA : ksuze my son may need to join you on your honey hunt!
-
Good morning Cave Chicks!!
My regularly scheduled Thursday Tutorial is going to come late today....my apologies, meaty subject (Ha! no, it's not about meat) and I'm making sure all my 'i's are dotted etc....I'll probably have to start it with "class...open your book to page 32..."
))) I'll try to make it fun...promise! Ok, so the heat in my baby (car) is going wonky again.......no fun when it feels like it's 40 below....wind has been howling for days now. At least we have sun!! Been thinkin' about my Christmas shopping & wrapping goal....I wish I was Hindu!
))) Anyhoodle, on to business.....
Ksuze - No darlin', no goat tending necessary.....but lemme' tell ya, there ain't nuttin' tastier than a nice creamy goat curry! Get your knives sharp and put your herd to good use
))) I used to be able to get goat meat readily back home (large Caribbean pop in Toronto) ....if I ask here they look at me like I've grown a goat head! I swear the fish, meat and produce section of my local grocery stores run and hide when they see me coming "pssssst...run, here comes the nutbar that eats weird things!" Meh...their loss....goat (although bony) is delish! LOVE what the program director said....I think that will stick with me too! Btw...sipping your java right now....still so pleased you posted it. Cheers!
Vampriella - Thanks for the link!!....today might be the day I make it....FREEZING here and my fingers are stone cold. As an employer now I'd just like to say that I'd hire a 60 year old over a 20 something any day of the week. The life knowledge, experience etc in a mature applicant FAR outweighs any age related limitations! My last few employers wouldn't really consider anyone under 30....and your age group was usually the choice! Never think your age is a stumbling block. Besides, you can't legally be asked your age during the hiring process....they have to gauge from meeting you....so keep up the good work with oil of olay
))))
I like the way your kiddo thinks!! Pour honey on everything.....even paperwork! LOL!! He's a cutie!! Is that you in the reflection???? I'm thinking it is because the person is a blondie....and cute as heck!! The reflection is blurry though, so I might be seeing your Cavedude
))) As for your son's 'smell', my mother had an old Scottish saying...."A stinkin' bairn (child) is a healthy bairn", so sounds like your cub is all good! That also means my Cavedude and Cavecub must be uber healthy
)))))) My mother had a million of em'.....another that sticks out was "Horses sweat, men perspire and ladies are all aglow" Have you ever heard anything more Victorian ridiculous??
)))) I need to put her through a rigorous workout and then say "how ya' feelin' Trigger?"
)))))
Ok I'm blabbering here....avoiding the tutorial prob.....so I'll take my leave. JunieBee - Hoping you're right as rain after the port install!!! Waves n' hugs to Inna (godda davida), JKL, TwoH (hope you're over the illness!) Pebbles(Flinstone), Pixi(dust)!
Have a splendiferous day kids!!
-
Ok, so my planned Tutorial is not going to make it today.....complicated, lotta' reading, want to be sure to convey correct info and, well, I don't have the mental steam to push through today. Sorry!! Feeling guilty
( All is not lost.....
Tutorial Thursday!!! - get out the cauliflower popcorn and chill!
Highly HIGHLY recommending a documentary titled: Fed Up "A wake-up call for everyone who eats"
It's available on Netflix, and free on YouTube...…
Very interesting, never boring.....you'll be surprised, shocked, and oh so happy you're eating healthy. Get the Cavecubs or Cavegrandcubs to watch. Important stuff!
I've been meaning to post this for a while, so perfect timing for my addled brain. Again, sorry for putzing out on y'all!
-
Yeah, I'd eat a goat. I'm very fond of goat chops with rosemary.
-
Thanks a lot Egads! After my day I was going to order pizza, now seeing that video (which I plan on showing the kids) we are eating the healthy shepherds pie I made. lol Well we just looked and Fed Up is not on Netflix anymore, they will have to watch it on my tablet. That one dad that said there was nothing he could do because his almost 400lb son would sneak the food - I was yelling at the screen "YOU DON"T BUY IT!" My heart brakes for that boy and having to go through such an extensive surgery! Very informative and so very true!
ETA: Yup that is me in the blurry reflection, I can't believe you can see anything at all! You must have superhero eyesite!
-
Thanks for the recipe, vampeyes!
I’ll have to save that one for a special day when I eat beef. I usually like to go out for a nice steak on those few occasions!
Hello, Egads! Thanks for thinking of me. I still try to keep up with reading, but I’ve had to prioritize sleep lately.
Waving to all the cave dwellers! 😊
-
Merry Christmas Peeps!!!!! It's beginning to look a lot like.....**SCREAM**
If it ain't one thing it's ……ya know? Sheesh. I guess it was bound to come. The Cavecub called and let me know to stay off the roads as it's taken him 1.5 hours to move 3 feet. As we all know, people forget how to drive in snow over the summer. Hell-ifax traffic has ground to halt. Have to say though, as the flakes get larger, it's a whole lot prettier to look at than leafless trees and grey skies. On to business……
Ksuze – Goat chops…..yummmmm.Looks like I'll be hauling freezer packs in my suitcase on the next trip home! How is the lovely wife faring? Last time we read she was doing better, hope that is holding!
Vamp – Pizza???? After the Reeces debacle??
)))))))) Hey, you didn't do THAT good on the scan! Jokin' of course
))) I LOL'd when you wrote you were yelling at the screen….I did the very same!!! I loved the scene where they were talking about doing so much better….and there was a 2 litre bottle of Coke sitting on the dinner table. Those poor kids…and the skinny brother unhealthy too. Very sad state we've been led into unknowingly, and continue even though we're much more aware. As Mark Sisson once wrote 'there should be criminal charges brought against the food industry and government for the RDA on carbs…..AND the fact that sugar doesn't have an RDA….gee, wonder why….CHA-CHING!! Arrrgggggg….drives me nuts! I have another vid suggestion but can't remember the name....will turn you off eating period LOL!!
Pixi(dust) – It's just great to know you're popping in…..hope you're having restful nights!!
We haven't seen Pebbles in a while…..I hope she returns…..I bet the Workout Wednesday posts are behind most disappearances!!
))))))

I know it's a hassle, but we could use any precipitation here on the west coast. The air is bad from the fires, and the fires themselves are still a tremendous threat made worse by dry conditions.
Lovely wife fares well. And how are the cave families?
I led Zumba classes since the instructor was away, which always increases my mileage a bit. I'm looking forward to a cleaning and paperwork weekend, though I commit to walking an hour a day. I'm thinking in a long-range way about walking the Camino Francés route of the Camino de Santiago on my own. Four or five weeks of meditative walking at around 15 miles a day sounds better and better.
-
Ksuze - Oh SO true..... I didn't even stop for a second to consider y'all out on the west coast....if I could I'd send this weather out your way....you certainly are in need. Electronic church signs all over town say 'pray for California' 'pray for west coast rain' etc.....I'm not a praying woman, but am indeed hoping down to my socks that you good folks get relief soon.....like today!! I'll take my snow lumps and be grateful! Glad to read your lovely-lovely is doing well!!
*sound of screeching brakes*
I'm not too proud to admit that I'm stone cold JEALOUS (not envious) of your Camino de Santiago plans....like pea green!!!! Oh that sounds AWE-SUM!!!! Go for it!!!.....think of the cool posts you could make
)))))) A lady I worked with years ago had a Sis that did the Cam Sant walk (BC survivor)…..said it was one of the best things she has ever done. Apparently she's repeated the trip a few times. Whew....sounds so good!
-
Pi - I bet you could sub the beef in the soup for something else, ground chicken, turkey, pork or leave it out! If you try it with a sub let me know how it goes. I am in LOVE with that soup. lol
ksuze - That is a very cool idea! I will send my snow and rain to you, my fil would like to get his beans done.
Egads - Meh. I am working hard everyday at making healthy delicious meals for me and the family, so I figure I am doing better than the average family, even if we are not perfect all the time. The video was an eye opener for sure and something really needs to be done but it's so true - all about the Benjamin's! I remember someone telling me how it was cheaper and easier to go get a pizza from Little Caesars for $5 than make a healthy home cooked meal.
Looked at some courses through the local college and nothing caught my eye. Signed up for a free start your own home business - maybe I can sell Cabbage Patch Soup. lol
Vampriella's Home Cookin; Vampriella's Primal Eats; Vampriella's Deadly Delicious Eats..... better work on it. hahaha

Hi, cave people! So my sickness did not get better and I ended up in the hospital. I am out now and at least the constant fevers are gone, but still very weak. I am trying to rebuild with plenty of rest and good, healthy food. I was on liquid diet in the hospital for a few days. As anyone knows who has experienced that, it is not suitable for a primal eater with sugary Jello, yogurts, puddings and juices as your options. I ended up setlling on plain cream of wheat and orange juice for breakfast and pureed chicken soup for lunch and dinner. Once I was cleared for real food it was a little easier as I could get eggs or meat and vegetables and fruit and avoid the grains and sugary stuff. I feel as weak as I was after chemo but I hope it doesnt take that long to recover my fitness.
Vampeyes I think there are a lot of customer service type work-at-home jobs. Good luck finding a second career. I daydream about that quite a bit myself.
We have the blankets of wet snow too. It is unfortunate we cant redirect the weather to places that need it. I am hoping poor California gets a break soon. I read this am there are a thousand people missing so that is not going to be good news.
i cant remember if I saw Fed Up. I will look for it. i love all those documentaries.
-
Happy Saturday Cave Chicks!!
The snow turned over to TONS of rain.....then back to snow.....then to rain again....somewhat how my mind works
)))))). It would appear we're stealing all the west coast's rainfall....rather unfair to them....not going to complain. As Ksuze pointed out, it could be MUCH worse!! So I spent most of yesterday catching up on paperwork......looooooong day, but it's done yay! On to business...…
Vampriella - You wrote : " I am working hard everyday at making healthy delicious meals for me and the family, so I figure I am doing better than the average family"......yes you are INDEED!! Your kids know what broccoli is (even if they coat it in honey
)))) jk'in….you're always looking for real food recipes and are avidly learning here and on your own....def ahead of the average.....and you're cool to boot
TwoH - Hey darlin!!! Wow....so sorry to hear you ended up in the hospital!! How long were you admitted? Was it flu? Awful!!! At this point I wouldn't even worry about your fitness, just healing. I end up injured every time I push too fast after an illness....make sure you rest up.....we want ya' all good again. How was the cream of wheat? I was raised on the stuff and is one of the no-no's I miss. Thing is it has a great nutritional profile, so to heck with the carbs for now. As you rest def check out the Fed Up doc it's a winner! Feel better soon....sending healing vibes your way!! Also thanks for checking back in....was getting worried
So Friday was missing something wasn't it kids? Stay tuned, it's being posted today!
-
Foodie Friday right on into Saturday!!! –
SMOKE EM' IF YA' GOT EM'!
When one of our fav restaurants closed a while back….I wanted to cry. A funky little establishment with a perfect combo of upscale and casual that made it worth an 1 ¼ hour drive each way. The smoked BBQ'd brisket was to DIE for!! Served with roasted spuds and a slaw that included tomatillos….sooooo good….clean plate every time and we left the joint feeling like all was right with the world. Unfortunately the chef/owner and his wife couldn't see eye to eye. I hate to say it, but his lady was a miserable pitbull on crack….legendary in the small town they were located in….don't believe me, check out the last few Yelp comments… https://www.yelp.ca/biz/privet-house-wolfville .
The food suffered along with the service….loud arguments ensued….right in the dining area (saw one myself on our last visit…..highly entertaining). This eventually lead to the chef pulling up stakes, leaving the pitbull and heading back to Ontario. A sad day indeed….my beloved smoked brisket is no longer.
(((
Not so fast……there had to be a solution. I could buy a smoker but didn't want to be tempted into using an appliance that, lets face it, produces not the healthiest of meat cooking options. So how does one get their brisket fix without investing in an unwanted smoker?
Make one in the oven!! Check it out……
and then....
Seal er' up....WELL! Seal properly and there won't be smoke in the house.....
Done...….
Want more? Want different?...….
and then.....
(spice mix is akin to Chinese 5 spice flavour...pungent...just cut the clove and star anise if it's not your fav...oh I forgot to mention orange peels above, add those along with the tea....yum)
And then.....
and then.....
Burner set to med- med/low for 35-45 mins....check doneness, cook futher or broil if you want drier/crispier
If your lid isn't sealing enough and you have a lot of smoke do this...…
Done.....
Don't worry about the rice/sugar mixture, it's simply a smoking mechanism....very little will end up on your meat...mostly in the form of colouring. Carb count....I don't know, but I had no GI issues so I'm assuming its pretty darned low.
I def got my fill of smoked meats....and will be trying a brisket next....oh yeah...will be posting! Give it a whirl....EASY AND FAST PREP........fantabulous alternative to using a smoker!
-
Vampriella - Kudos in the business class!! Vampriella's Fine Vittles? Vamp's Kitchen Smack Down
))))))))
-
Yum!
TwoHobbie, I'm so sorry!
-
TwoHobbies - I am so sorry you ended up in the hospital! Too bad I can't express post some Cabbage Patch Soup to you, darn postal workers! Rest up and feel better soon, but don't push it like Egads said. Thank you for the call center tip!
Egads - I think the name still needs work. lololol
-
You’ve had worse things inya’ mouf.com?
))))))))))))))))))))
-
TwoHobbies, feel better! So sorry you have to go through this!
Egads, nom-nom-nom! I think I can smell the smoke all the way in New Jersey.
Vamp, how about Vamp’s Bloody Kitchen? 🤪🤪
-
Inna - Love it, made me chuckle! How are you feeling?
-
Vampeyes I am sure your soup would cure me. I do want to make a big pot of vegetable soup today. So far I have been relying on guacamole, salsa and blueberries abd strawberries for recovery. Funny the things you crave.
Egads I had actually never had cream of wheat in my life, but I liked it - mostly because it wasnt sweet. No it wasnt the flu. They did test but i had gotten my flu shot three weeks prior and it came back negative for flu. They said a viral infection and a bacterial infection both and I am allergic to three classes of antibiotics, so that becomes a problem.
Egads what a great idea on the smoking in the oven but I would be a little afraid I would smoke up the house. You may be able to do it but that is different than me doing it. I had a disastrous self cleaning oven incident at the old house that has left me scarred! We love brisket too and I think one day we will invest in a smoker. I would rather have that than a grill any day.
-
Food Porn. Salmon, shrimp, mussels, and sushie, raw veggies and dip.
-
Filet mignon!
-
Hello Everyone!
TwoHobbies - So sorry you ended up in the dang hospital! I hope you are now on the mend now.
Vamps - I need that Cabbage Patch Soup recipe. It looks delish.
The port placement surgery went well and I was discharged the same day. I was so drugged up and groggy I went to bed at like 6 p.m. and slept until 10:30 the next morning. I have an allergy to tape adhesive and when I woke up the next morning I had major redness & blisters along the border of the Tegaderm dressing. And you can guess where I spent the afternoon. Yep, the ER. The nurse there said they didn't have anything but Tegederm, but thankfully she called IV Therapy and they said they have a different dressing for people like me. It's called IV 3000. Worked like a charm, but now I have scabs from the blisters that are healing.
Ksuze - Since I am so far behind, how did you end up on the wrong end of a bees stinger? I hope you are getting relief. Your plan to walk in someplace for meditation sounds cool. Where is this place?
Egads - That snow looks coooold! and slippery! It is so sad to read the stories about the California fires though. We are having rather cold, but dry weather here right now.
As you've said, I have had a lot of C _ _ p! to deal with this year. It feels unending and I think I've actually reached the end of my rope. I see palliative care in 2 weeks and I will be discussing is with them. I am totally aware that I am not alone in how much stuff many of us have to juggle daily, but sometimes the plate is just overflowing and it all comes pouring out.
Anyway, I am off to bed, my ride to the MRI in the morning is coming at 5:15 a.m., so I have to get up at 3:45 a.m. Goodnight to all and I hope you rest peacefully & comfortably.
