Ksuze (Grand Masta' Snoop Dog Latte) - WORD!!
Book recommendation:
Rusty Bed Springs by I.P. Knightly
-
I don't know how many times I have peed my pants in the past from the quick onset of having to go badly and not getting to the bathroom soon enough, to doing jumping jacks and leaking, to waiting to long because I was busy. I have noticed it's better - must be the squats and lunges I have started doing!
I think I need to do a workout routine workup, like those people that have leg days. You have posted a lot of exercises and I wonder if you would help me write this up to follow. Thoughts? Tonight I have Chinese Beef and Broccoli soup on the go with Garlicy Cheddar Biscuit's, if it all turns out I will add the recipe links tomorrow. Smells good, so I am thinking it will be a tasty hit....fingers crossed.

TGIF Cave Chicklettes!!
Second day in a row of sunshine here.....anything to make a liar out of me
)))) Enjoying it and plan on using up as much free Vit D as my skin can get it's grubby hands on
Foodie Friday post to follow shortly!Vampriella - The meal sounds yum....hope you're gonna post pics and or recipes! The biscuits sound amazing! Workout plan....my apologies, we did talk about that and I went and forgot (blame my fridge!). Ok, so no problem, would love to put together a routine for you...and anyone else that needs help in that direction. What I need from you first is you short/long term goals, a list of any equipment you have at home, and most importantly any physical limitations you have. We can gab about this or you can list here. Every program has to be designed to the 'worker-outter'....but yeah, let's get er' done
)))))Back at y'all soon

-
Morning all,
I have added the recipes to the bottom of my post, no pictures this time.
It's not raining here today, nope we get that wonderful white stuff instead.

We can chat, saves me a typing up a long list of things and I get to hear your lovely voice that always brightens my day.
Took today off too, I am hoping with the exercises and time off to heal I will be able to work next week! Fingers crossed. -
FOODIE FRIDAY – YAY!!!
Come one, come all!! (all three of us :))))) Let us drag out our culinary skills or not-so-skills to round out the week!
I've been whining about cold, damp and miserable days here in good ol' Heli-fax. Time for a nice hearty bowl of deliciousbraised meat in a warmly spiced gravy…nom nom nom. Make the house smell yummy for my returning Cavedude after his long hard day. Yeah…….time for……
OFADA STEW WITH FUFU!!!
What the hell is Egads cooking up this time?!?!?"....and you may be saying to your screen "I bet in involves crickets or beetroot in the panna cotta". Nope.
Ofada is a West African dish…specifically a Nigerian stew made with a blend of warm seasonings….. lots of leftovers and 'must get rid of' refrigerator items. Mine included leftover chicken and spicy sausage.much like the way a stew anywhere in the world might be made…..but this one was awesome! Garlic, onions, tomatoes, ajwain seed, ginger, cinnamon, smoked paprika, black cumin, chili peppers, touch of honey, base done in 10 minutes and simmered until it got 'that' taste. You know the one! J
It was the FUFU that caught my attention while flipping through the web (pronouced foo-foo, not eff u eff u
)))……love saying fufu. Fufu is traditionally made from pulverized starchy root veg, like cassava, potato etc.Mashed and cooked down to a thick/dry-ish mashed potato consistency. It's also called Swallow….because good Nigerian manners demand you swallow the small finger formed dumplings whole…chewing FuFu is rude and only for children….I guess I'm rude
))))) Tradition also holds that it's rather bland and used to sop up the stew…take a piece, roll into a flat dumpling with the fingers, dip, eat. Fufu is placed on a plate in the middle of the table and it's dipped into by everyone's fingers ….ummmmm…..No thanks, we used forks.Carby though *sigh*
Good news!…. carb aware Nigerian peeps have mastered Fufu making to a whole new level….by using lower carb non-starchy veg….cabbage is the top choice. Watch this……….

There are variations, eggplant, carrot and I suppose cauliflower, but not too sure if you could get the same consistency without a wee bit of starch in the veg. I can see Fufu topping a shepherd's pie ….finally something that has a mash potato texture... a toping without the carb levels!
Problem is, a huge a**ed head of cabbage is mostly water, so the end product is rather small….like two - four servings (and probably why Nigerians take finger full instead of spoonfuls)…….
So I made mini FUFU balls to top my Nigerian stew…kinda cute dontcha' think...………..
Made for a delish meal, Cavedude has a new fav, and has been making double barrelled jokes about how much he loves Fufu since....oy vey!
)))) Actually....if you look real close....meh....I'll post when I construct a shepards pie a'la FuFu
) -
I'll have to try that. I love fufu!
-
Bone scan Monday. 🙄 MRI x2 booked in December. On the cancellation list for MRI. Feeling lots of emotions - annoyed, scared and thankful (they are being thorough).
-
It's always such a mix, isn't it?
-
Stay strong, Vamp. We're all in your pocket for your upcoming scans & sending positive thoughts out into the universe for good results. Other than the justifiable anxiety, are you feeling any better?
Your ofada looks good, Egads, but I'm not sure about cabbage fufu. Does it have a strong cabbage taste? I'm trying something new tomorrow - carrot noodles with a creamy cashew Alfredo sauce. (Hope it tastes as good as it sounds!)
BTW, Egads, I meant to respond earlier to some of your previous posts. I appreciate your exercise advice so much! I will definitely add some squats to my regular routine. I've been a little leery of them because they scare my arthritic knees but I will give them a try. (Maybe I'll slide down the wall into a squat with an exercise ball behind my back - would that work?) Re: leakage, if all else fails, I'm thinking about trying Emsella; it's getting great reviews (even though it's pricey).
And add me to the list of ladies who get the blahs when there's no sun. We have had a ridiculously wet, grey & gloomy fall so far this year so I've been feeling unusually lethargic (probably why I'm not posting as much - I am so dependent on sunshine I must be solar-powered).
How's your cavecub doing? Hope the staple removal wasn't (or isn't) too traumatic for either of you!
Ksuze, I hope you've seen the end of your diet plateau. And Junie, how are you doing? Hope you're feeling better too. Have a great weekend, all!
-
I overdid the squats. Walking like a wooden puppet for the past two days. Oh, well, this too she’ll pass. If someone made fufu for me, I’d love to try it
-
Inna - I feel your pain, I did that with lunges, boy were stairs a pain in the butt! lol
JKL - Thank you, I honestly think I am making it worse somehow. Woke up a couple times to the pinky on my opposite side with that asleep feeling.
Egads - FUFU cracks me up every time I read about it, oh my simple mind. lololol I was thinking maybe you could add a link to Bob and Brad on YouTube, they have some really good videos. I am still doing them daily in hopes of fixing this issue.
Made Cauliflower Popcorn yesterday I will post a photo of the before and after - lmfao at how little there was when I pulled it out of the dehydrator! DH and I both think it's pretty good, but wow not much too it!

-
Inna--Oh, I hate that!
Vamp, I had a commercial cauliflower crust pizza yesterday. I believe I've found the limit to what I'll tolerate in a cauliflower substitution.
I'm officially shifting over to a modified Mediterranean diet. I've been thinking a lot about my liver health (last scan showed fatty liver) and my bottom line is that I need to prioritize not stressing it with a high fat diet.
So--going for mostly
- Poultry
- Fish/seafood
- Monounsaturated oils
- Some medium-chain triglycerides
- Nuts & seeds
- Lots of greens and above-ground vegetables
- Onions, shallots, and garlic
- Cooked mushrooms
- Berries and other lower-glycemic fruit
- Less dairy than with keto
- Scant tofu
- Scant legumes (such as lentils)
- Scant grains (complex/old varieties where feasible)
- Light on wine and spirits (until my liver is in good shape)
- Close to no roots or tubers
- Close to no bread
-
ksusan, I am right there with you on that diet
-
ksuze, question for ya, why cooked mushrooms? Will you still eat them raw? I
Ladies yesterday my guts were not happy with me, filled with air, nausea it was not nice. It took me a few hours to realize that I had eaten pepperoni, and have learned a valuable lesson on checking labels! Now I will say that since I was already feeling the agony why not get some cravings out of the way at the same time and make it a cheat night. Sooooo, I ate the licorice and recess peanut butter cups and ya know what?! I really, really, really enjoyed them in the moment. I didn't enjoy the feeling afterwards, it was like food was sitting at the top of my stomach threatening to come back up. Will I cheat again, possibly. I will say I did 3 weeks of clean eating. Moving forward I will be not only watching what I put in my mouth, but the amount going in because weight loss is not happening for this girl.... I shall blame Tamxoifen. hahahah
-
I don't ever eat raw mushrooms. Too much evidence that they may be carcinogenic.
-
Okay, here's breakfast:
Stir-fried eggs, HWC, olive oil, garlic, shallot, scallion, portobello, broccoli, sugar pod peas, olives.

-
Egads007 - thank you for creating this topic! Hopefully I can join in this late in the game. My story - I completely revamped my nutrition / eating habits after the bc diagnosis, going to clean eating, but I’m a carnivore and love meat so I’m not going to go completely vegan like some people do (plus I don’t think that’s as healthy, a lot of vegans become anemic). Anyways it’s great to see this paleo topic and you seem to have a lot of knowledge and advice!
I’ve actually lost 22 lbs in the past 4 months! I was starting to lose weight (I had gained probably 40 lbs in the past few years which I think may have something to do with the bc) so was maybe down 5-10 lbs when I discovered the lump then I accelerated things and have lost more since the diagnosis. I do calorie count but I’m not starving myself, it’s just eating clean and eating more of the right things.
What I did / am doing:
- I tried Keto and lost weight the first week then hit a plateau. I think because Keto had cut my carbs substantially but after I didn’t lose weight, then I read dairy was bad for bc (I was still eating lots of cheese on Keto) so I switched to more of a Mediterranean diet and the weight loss started again.
- I cut red meat (for now) and dairy based on what I learned at foodforbreastcancer.com - I still eat chicken and fish, especially salmon, as those have been proven to be good to fight breast cancer. One day I will enjoy bacon again! Just being more strict right now while I’m in the midst of this fight.
- I cut all processed foods. No bread, no store processed stuff, and I think that’s made the biggest difference.
- I significantly increased my intake of fruits and veggies and husband is helping me juice! I drink lots of juices throughout the day, but also eat regular food too. Pineapple/orange/berry juice and carrot/apple juice are some favorite combinations. Veggie soups have also been great when I get a salty craving. And honey with dark chocolate for the sweet cravings.
- I add turmeric and garlic and curry powder to almost everything! They are also breast cancer fighters.
- I am not doing a mad amount of exercise yet. I do yoga and free weights every now and then. With the initial lumpectomy, and also surgery to pull eggs (we have 2 little embryos now yay!) and radiation treatment happening now, I’ve had to be more moderate on the exercise. BUT I plan to increase this as soon as I’m on Tamoxifen as I’ve heard a lot about tamoxifen causing weight gain so I think if I up the ante on exercise maybe I can avoid that side effect.
- I am supposed to start tamoxifen after radiation treatment is done and I AM a bit wary about it, hoping I can continue to lose weight while I’m on it. Open to any advice on how to continue to push through. A bit nervous about that one but going to try and persevere.
Anyways just wanted to say thx for starting this topic and I will be checking in! I might try that fufu recipe!
-
Many bee stings-->eat chocolate.
-
Good morning Chickies!!
Vegas Monday is upon us!!

…….and what a fine day it is! Sun is shining (for now) and I've finally managed to get the Cavedude off to work and out of my hair
))) We spent the weekend on our pantry reno and it's turned into a lot more work than expected (figures). We're getting there and expect to finish by my Personal Challenge deadline (fingers crossed). ….if we don't kill each other first
)))))Looks like we're starting Vegas Monday offwell….nice to see all the lovely posts! No cheats for me this weekend, although I ate far too many nuts during the reno work…..too busy to make lunch….not the dreaded pignons though…blech! So down to business…….
Ksuze – Little hints for the Fufu making…..wrap in at least 4 layers of cheesecloth and twist to get excess water out. Put into colander and put something heavy on it….like a cast iron frying pan and leave it for ½ hour. Twist again. The cooking part is to get more water out…..add the tapioca start when it's starting to ball up in the pot.I'm going to be making it from a few other veggies….should be interesting, will post. Mushrooms…..interesting. From what I've readyou'd have to eat a helluva lot of raw before you hit carcinogenic levels, and that the benefits (even with the agaritine) for breast cancer outweighs the small risk.Is there new evidence? Please post what you have on this….always great to get more info! Your new Mediterranian regime looks great! Keep us posted on the progress please. Any shift down in weight yet? Did you try a carb load? One last question….bee stings & chocolate?? Hell I eat chocolate if the door rings!!
)))) Oh and your breakfast looks AMAZING…..think I might put that one together tomorrow morn….YuM!!!Vampriella – Big hugs for today's scan darlin'!! I'll echo Ksuze…..it always is such a mix….great they're being vigilant, but oh the damn knuckle biting! We're here for you…..and crossing everything it's all good…which I'm sure it will be! My phone is always open to ya! That looks like some mighty fine cauliflower Hawaiian crunchies!!! How'd they turn out?? Good lord woman….you wonder why your tummy hurt…pepperoni, reeces & licorice????You get the Vegas Award this week
)))))) Joking of course…..yeah….blame the tamoxifen….I read that 'eat reeces pieces' SE on the Mayo Clinic site LOL!!! Meh, pick up, dust off and onwards…..I have no doubts you'll crush this challenge! You have done WONDERFUL work and have come so far sweetie!! Your workout plan….found something I need to yak at you about….easy peasy, light and doable. I think perfect for your situation. Let's chat soon.JKL –Flu and cough all gone yet?? Sure hope so!! Couldn't have helped with the 'leaks'….coughing is so very good for pant wetting ! I quickly looked up the Emsella you spoke about ….looks safe enough but (you knew there was a 'but' coming didntcha?
))))) I honestly think you'd benefit so much more from squats and lunges ….not just the bladder, everything….strength, bone building, muscle building, core building. S & Q's are foundation movements for good reason. That said I understand why peeps fear for their knees…..by all appearances these moves look to put a whole lot of pressure on the knees. Big ol' myth….done properly, and with correct form, they build the muscles that support weak (or bad knees), along with relieving pain. I found out through my diagnostic scans that I have arthritis in both knees…had no idea, and didn't feel anything until moving to a damp climate. When autumn comes around, the ache starts. Adding extra squats & lunges plus collagen has obliterated the ache…..quickly. …and my pants are dry YAY!
) Proper form and SLOW build up is VITAL. I posted a series a while back….I'm going to dreg it up and re-post as well as send to you in PM. Choice is yours, but honestly think it's worth a gentle careful shot. Within a few months your knees may not be any concern. If not interested, just tell me to shaaaaad up
)))))) Thanks for asking about my cavecub…..check out below
Inna (godda davida) – Hey darlin! Omg do I know the pain of too many squats, especially getting to your car…..it's like…..

How many rads down? Feeling better I guess if you're doing squats!!
Last, and certainly not least…..
PebblesV – Hello and a big Cave Chick welcome to you!! You hope you can join late in the game??? Darlin' we've been trying to figure out how to get you to join!!
)) I think you'll like it around here…..the Cave Chicks are great group of gals. We practice various regimes, and it's all good. No judgments, lots of support, learning, laughs …..oh the laughs! Btw, just in case you're wondering, we refer to Monday as 'Vegas'….or 'Going Vegas' It's a personal choice whether to post a 'cheat' food, usually consumed over a weekend (what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas;) It helps accountability, but more often than not, it's a chance to poke fun at ourselves…totally human!
Big congrats on your two lil' embryos….that put a huge smile on my face when I read that!! Another congrats for the weight loss…..look at you go! *high 5*!!! Like you I had some to lose before diagnosis, and after I ate like a maniac….the only exercise was lifting a fork to my mouth
))) I know the struggle of losing on tamoxifen. I went the veggie/vegan/low cal/ etc etc… route and NOTHING. Paleo solved that for me.Thing is, declining estrogen levels (menopause, estrogen blockers) takes away from our cells being able to efficiently 'let go' of fat….hangs on to it longer. This is why post/peri menopausal women tend to 'barrel' outwards…..add tamoxifen or an AI into the mix and you've got a double whammy happening! It's def harder, but not impossible. Carbs….reduce em' down to 50-80 grams per day and we see the weight fall off……as you are now..yay!!! Kudos on dropping processed foods. Setting your macro levels (protein/carb/fat) is helpful and can be personalized. I'll be posting some 'paleo 101' this week that might be helpful….hope so!
From what you posted you fall into the Paleo/Primal category….my fav!! Again welcome to the Cave Crew and hope to see you post again soon……much luck with those rads!!Everyone - *singing* I am strong….I am invincible….I am nauseous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
))))))Piece of cake really….we just wonder where the other two staples went…they aren't in his head!
ETA: JunieBee…….where you be at darlin??
-
Done with the rads!

-
Inna (godda davida) - You beautiful girl !!! WOOT!!! YOU DID IT!!! CONGRATS!!

-
Woohoo!
Egads, nothing new on mushrooms, I just eat a lot of them and even before BC I stopped eating them raw.
Carb loading made me go up a couple of pounds. Mostly veg is probably good to try as long as it doesn't kick my blood sugar up.
-
Ksuze - Oh yeah, carbs tend to suck up and hold water.....4 grams to one gram of carb. I'm thinking it's water weight. Takes 1-3 days to notice a diff when I carb load....sorry it didn't work that way for you!
Funny about mushrooms, I stopped eating them raw a few years back, afraid of ecoli. The few VERY times I had in the past years I scrub the bejesus out of them, hardly any mushroom left
)))So kids, was making a meat sauce for my Cavecub this afternoon, he's requested pasta (before he launches a rebellion). I opened up a new tube of organic tomato paste and thought I'd share. I can't stand when it either turns black in the fridge (canned) or needs to be used up in 2 weeks (organic)…..found a little trick.....
Wrap in saran in tablespoon portions...….
then fold and stack.....
Pop into your freeze in a ziplock bag, grab a 'puck' and toss into whatever, melts in fast. No more wasted tomato paste. Waste sucks!!
Same goes for fresh ginger.....rots quickly! Toss in a ziplock and freeze. Grate as needed (grates easily while frozen) and pop back into the freezer for another day. If you need large slices drag it out 1/2 hour before using. Here is my stash...….

They yell that at me every time I open the door
)))) -
Hello Everyone,
No, I have not fallen off the face of the earth. I've had numerous doctors appts. Like daily! Last week I had 7 appts. in 5 days. Also, I've been so tired that when I get home from the appts. I've been taking naps and waking up with no energy. I have managed to only volunteer twice in the last couple weeks. Also, last Saturday I went with a friend to a quilt group meeting , but body pain (fibromyalgia) was significant, despite pain meds. I came home took one more pill and slept 4 hours. I had the appt for the MRI of my elbow scheduled on Oct. 31st, but when I got to the facility they wouldn't do the scan because I hadn't brought someone to watch Kirby while I was in the MRI. Apparently the tech. has been bitten by a supposed service dog in the past and he was unwilling to watch Kirby. I have never had this issue at any other place. Anyway, the MRI is now scheduled on Nov. 19th at a different facility. My elbow is still very painful and I am limited in my range of motion too. Even the lymph edema therapist refused to touch me until I get the results from the MRI.
Tomorrow (11/13) I am having a minor surgery to have a port placed in my chest, so I'll be a bit out of it. MO said it was the ideal time to get this procedure done since I am not on any chem right now. Once I am healed I'll be starting the new drug (Kisqali). Three horse pills a day. Ewww! Kirby's trainer is picking him up and keeping him for the day tomorrow and will pick me up from the hospital when I'm released tomorrow.
I have not gone back yet to catch up on reading your posts. I hope you are all doing well and looking forward to Thanksgiving. I will try to get back here by next week.
Thank you Vamp & Egads for the PM's.
-
Egads - Thank you. 💞 I am positive I have seen "will make you crave and possible eat yummy chocolate, licorice, and many, many other bad things you should not consume. " on The Webmd for Tamoxifen.😂
You don't peel your ginger before freezing? Do you use the peel? Another great tip from you I will have to do tomorrow - I have tomato paste in my fridge right now likely going bad!
Inna - Congrats! You made it girl, you're all done now! 🎉
Junie - so happy to see you posting, so sorry for the pain you are in. Hugs being sent your way. I didn't realize you were still needing chemo, thought you were NED. Horse pills - Ugh that will not be fun, maybe yogurt or applesauce will help them go down?
Night All
-
Egads007
Thanks for the freezing tip about ginger, I would like to start using more but the fresh goes bad quicker then I can use it so I just don't other wasting the money.
Good question though, is it peeled before freezing?
Hope things are going well for all.
-
Vamp - I am NED since the spine surgery in August, but because I had mets to my spine I still have to continue the oral chemo + Faslodex and Xgeva injections. This will continue for the rest of my life. As we all know Cancer is a sneaky bugger and can/will show up anywhere at any time.
Inna - Congratulations on completion of your rads! Yay!
-
Good day Peeps!
Cloudy& overcast here today…..with a chance of misery . Oh yeah, weather is making us pay for our brief day of sunshine. We're expecting 100 km winds this afternoon……anyone in Kansas I can drop in on?
))))) Lets get to it shall we……JunieBee – Well whew! Really glad to see you post…..and terribly sorry to read about all your pain! Fibromyalgia is no joke. A very good friend of mine has been suffering with it for years. Like you, she has a darned good attitude towards it all, but I see the pain on her face. That tech sure missed out on an opportunity to spend time with the Kirbster! I'm sorry they had to reschedule, and hope they get to the bottom of the elbow deal very soon……No wonder you're exhausted with that schedule and pain. Darlin' you're a trooper….big hugs!!! Kirby's trainer sounds like a god send. We'll all be sending our positive thoughts for a smooth port surgery…let us know how it goes when you can. Until then we'll be missing you! More Hugs!!
Vampriella & Jade – Happy you found the tips helpful! Ok, so ginger peel. Peel ginger? Ummmmm, no. I hate peeling ginger….like I don't have enough peeling and chopping in my life!
))))) No I don't peel before freezing as the peel stops the ginger from drying out in the freezer. I take it out, grate it as is….peel and all. I've done this for years in savory or baked goods and NEVER noticed peel because it was grated fine.....the peel is also paper thin. It is completely edible…..and I suppose a bit o' fiber to boot. If you want large slices then just get out chunk and take at it with a veggie peeler (or edge of a spoon) when it's defrosted. Although I've left peel on larger slices too…once it's cooked you really don't notice it at all.....I do remove larger peel areas when stir frying. I recommend cutting a whole root into various usable pieces before freezing as it's not easy to cut through once it is frozen.Don't worry about the dried edge of the ginger, it grates off fine. 2" chunks seems to be the rule of thumb in most recipes. Ksuze – I'm still scratching my head about the bee stings and chocolate comment you made……chocolate covered bees?
))))JKL – Forgot to ask on my last comment to you…..how did the swim class go? Will have your squat info up soon!
So I'm off to find something to be opinionated about, seeing it's Two Cent Tuesday. No luck so far, but knowing the way my life runs it should be up shortly
)))) Jump in if y'all want to do the Two Cent thing! Otherwise…..have a splendiferous day!! -
Inna - congrats on being done with rads!! I’m in the midst of it now, done mid-Dec.
ksusan - forgot to mention that stir fried eggs, garlic, shallot breakfast you posted looks DELICIOUS. One day when I’m OK with dairy again I’m going to try that!
Egads - thank you SOooo much for the warm welcome! I love that you call this group the cave chicks. 🤗🤗 I have a question and you seem very knowledgeable... I’m tracking on a MyFitnessPal app but don’t know where to set the macro levels ideally (protein/carbs/fat). I’m eating a whole lot more fruits and veggies than ever before and those fall into the carbs category but those aren’t bad carbs necessarily. Any advice?
Also for all the cave chicks, any advice on good desserts that are actually good for us? So far I just have honey and dark chocolate to satisfy that sweet tooth.
Junie - sending healing thoughts.
-
Ksuze I must have missed things breakfast post, I will be going back through the posts to find it after basketball tonight!
Egads - for a kid that doesn't poop every day what can I give him? Add some chia or flax to his meals?
Tonight's dinner was perfect for the cold weather we are having. Cabbage Patch Soup, soooo yummy it may be dinner tomorrow nights too! If anyone is interested in the recipe I will post it tomorrow.
