WORKOUT WEDNESDAY – The TAKE IT EASY version
This goes out to our gorgeous Vampeyes, the inspiration for this post !
We've taken a number of hits in our Cave Community lately. Low energy levels…..most caused by forces that are out of our hands. Low blood levels, chemo treatments, infection, the list is something we all can relate to.
So what's a cave chick to do when her energy is at an all time low, but her desire is high for physical fitness? The answer is easy.TAKE IT EASY.
Do what you can to keep the body moving, but sloooowly and gently. Ten to fifteen minutes a day, broken up if necessary. Heck, 2 minutes if that is all you can manage. Simply walking the halls of your home can be enough to keep from seizing up.
Exercise, especially when hitting it hard, can actually have detrimental effects if you are anemic, going through chemo or suffering a nasty infection/ill.
Read this if you're anemic or very low on energy:
"Intense exercise can be even more of an issue for the most common form of anemia that is caused by an iron deficiency. Heavy exercise can increase iron demands by 1 to 2 milligrams per day. This can magnify the condition. Iron loss through sweat, blood loss, or the breakdown of red blood cells from foot striking (high impacting moves) in exercise may increase the need for iron"
Read this on exercising while ill or suffering infection:
"If your symptoms are above the neck, including a sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing, and tearing eyes, then it's OK to exercise," he says. "If your symptoms are below the neck, such as coughing, body aches, fever, and fatigue, then it's time to hang up the running shoes until these symptoms subside"
Read this on exercising during treatment:
"Exercising during chemotherapy can help ease side effects, such as fatigue and nausea, and can help boost your immune system. Chemotherapy side effects can sometimes make exercising tough, but try to be as active as you're able to be. Again, walking is a good way to start."
*
- We all know the difference between feeling lazy and feeling that we just CANNOT exercise.
- Listen to your body, get lots of rest, move slowly within the bounds of your energy at the time.
- If you need to sleep, then take a nap.
Trust me, the exercise will be waiting for you when you bounce back. It's a stubborn bugger that like death & taxes, will always be there
))
VIDSCan be done in a chair….yoga/tai chi….gentle....
*
This one can be done lying down.....the music and voice almost put me to sleep
)
*
When you're feeling better, check this home HITT workout…
Gotta say, I cringed when she was swinging the dumbbell with the baby so close. Try this baby free
))
Take it easy kids!

^ Nice!
Hey, so a radioactive contrast IV counts as getting some iodine, right?
-
Hey Ksuze! I was waiting to hear about your imaging, how did it go today?? Yes, I'd say your iodine would def be above sea level
))))))
)))))))
-
I had the neck and chest scan this morning. Not too bad. Painful IV insertion, but at least it didn't blow out this time. My PCP called about 2 hours later to say the radiologist reported that the neck scan was clear. She didn't mention the chest scan, but I'll work on the assumption it was clear as well unless someone tells me otherwise!
-
I need help. I have this casserole that is made with rotini pasta. I have tried zucchin noodles and savoy cabbage to replace them for a low carb meal, but it comes out like stew. Any ideas on what to try next time I make it?
-
Small update for those interested:
Small scare with separating front incision but doc says everything seems to be going well. Still on 5pnd weight restrictions and will be for the next 4 weeks but I can start working on arm mobility with raising my arms over my head. ironically Im already mostly there naturally it's just the last little bit I need to work on for fully raising my arms over my head completely but I can hang my jackets on a coat hanger so one of the few wee bits of luck my body naturally gave me back most of my arm mobility and I just have to do exercises for that last few inches of reach for full arms stretched over my head which I can physically actually do just not comfortably yet.
Part of pathology is back 2 cm tumor,grade 2, appears to be no node involvement, sentinel node clear, her2 pending, I appear to be in the gray area when it comes to chemo but have already decided no matter what they say my choice in none and I will accept the consequences. Maybe if I wasn't alone in this world and had nothing in my life worth living for I would give it a try but the past two weeks have shown me I'm not mentally and emotionally strong enough to handle it. They don't send you to an oncologist until 8-11 weeks after surgery around here but I see BS around end of month.
Hope things improve for those on here who have hit their own obstacles. Best wishes to all.
-
No need to jump ahead of yourself, Jo. I'm glad that your doctor is not concerned about the separation, and I'm really glad that you're lymph node negative. I'm also really impressed with how you've been able to take care of yourself, as well as your range of motion so early in the game. Just keep taking care of yourself. One step at a time.
-
KETO; zero to low carb and low to no sugar really is the only thing that made me feel like the pre-40 me. I dropped like 30lbs and have adapted this lifestyle from March of this year. I am extremely strict, more than most and could really see the end game was worth all the discipline. In conjunction with walking 3-4 times a week/bike ride of 6-8 miles once a week. Next on the agenda, is my DIEP flap/breast reconstruction to hopefully get the physical results I'm looking for. I may still need to lipo after the fact. But I'm currently at 23 bmi (down from 27).
-
Jade - Glad you're checking in, I was about to post on your other thread. I'm echoing KSuze, baby steps darlin. You have done brilliantly this far! With the hits you've been taking it's no wonder you're left depleted. Give it time and try to keep an open mind....you aren't alone, you've got all us in the cave, never forget that! A big YAY on no node involvement, always a good thing
KSuze - VERY happy to read about the clear neck scan, and waiting to hear the same for the chest...let us know please! I wish results were that fast here...some imaging results are delivered to retirement homes
)))) Awesome news, love it!
Vamp - will be testing the casserole 2 ways tomorrow as we texted about. If it doesn't work out I'll UPS it to you
))))
Kickin - Welcome to the Cave!! Free parking at the back
) Love your stats, pretty danged impressive....as is your attitude towards your lifestyle. Taking the BMI down four notches deserves applause, congrats! I think you'll find us Cave chicks a caring, supportive, fun and pretty chill group o' gals. When is the DIEP happening? Hope to see you post again soon!
-
Thank you ksusan and egads007
-
Good work on that BMI!
-
Jade - Fantastic news on the no node involvement!! I didn't do chemo - no nodes involved and oncotype was 21. You are a strong woman to be going through this on your own with no help.
Ksuze - Fantastic news as well with a clean neck!
Egads - no need to waste the money on UPS - you can feed it to DH when he pisses you off.
Junie - How are you feeling hun? Home from the hospital yet?
Inna - more hugs.
JKL - you good?
It's so quite, where did everyone go? Can I go too?
-
Mornin' Peeps!!
Vamp - If you find out where they've all gone please let me know where the party is at
)) Forget feeding it to my DH, I'll send it directly to your kiddo's teacher
))))
Inna (godda Davida) - Hugs & luv!
JunieBee - what Vamp said!
JKL, TwoH…...where areeeee youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu?!?!?!?!?!
So, for a while now I've been thinking about the MIA cave chicks.....our numbers are dwindling......are we still good kids? Should we call it a day?
What say y'all?
-
ksusan - Great news on your scan. Glad your able to keep calm about waiiting for the results of the chest portion.
Egads - I am still in the hospital. The antibiotic I am getting is given via an IV over 4 hrs, then 4 hours off, then 4 hours on. Couldn't be done at home. The good news is that so far the blood cultures have not grown any bacteria so far this time. So if that continues, then I got by without the sepsis this time. Yay!
Jadejo - So encouraging that your range of motion is improving so quickly. Don't make any decisions until you feel better and get your results. Your nodes are clear and that's great news too.
I was 31 when I first had my BC and mastectomy and I was single and went through it mostly by myself. Give yourself more credit. I am by the grace if God 58 and grateful to still be here.
Vamp - The recipe with the rotini pasta, what else in it? What if any protein?
My arm started itching like crazy yesterday afternoon, so they gave me some Benadryl and I slept most of the afternoon and all evening. So I've been awake since midnight. It's 5:30 a.m. now. I'll probably fall asleep again by noon. Unless they discharge me today.
-
Thanks
-
Junie - do you know why this keeps happening? How is your back doing after that big surgery you had done with the cement? As for the recipe, Egads is working on it and hopefully has come up with something. It's suppose to be a Tuna and Salmon Casserole - it's very tasty with the pasta in it. I have tried cabbage, savoy cabbage and zucchini and so far haven't nailed it.
-
Egads, I'm still here but lurking. Been busy getting things changed over, cleaning out stuff that, and doctors appointments. DS came for a few days on his way to a conference. Have some paleo days but not enough. One thing by reading this thread, I've started paying more attention to what I eat. Overall, it's better than what I had been doing. Little steps in the right direction. This thread is valuable. You make it a fun place to visit while still educating us!
To everyone who has been going through treatment and surgeries, I wish you the best. It's never easy.
-
Vamp - When I had my mastectomy the surgeon removed 25 of my axillary lymph nodes, plus I have lymph edema. Then add the oral chemo (Ibrance) which has caused me to have neutropenia. These issues create a perfect storm that leaves me at high risk of this happening.
My MO is taking me off of the Ibrance and starting me on a new drug in the same class (Kisqali). It apparently has a lower incidence of neutropenia. We'll see though.
I am still in the hospital getting IV antibiotics, but my ANC has continued to drop. I am seriously immune compromised right now.
ANC counts:
Tues = 1.19
Wed. = 0.97
Today = 0.75
I am concerned that I may end up getting an injection of Grannix again. I so hope not. It caused me severe pain in my pelvis and the base of my skull. 3 in injections of Fentanyl did zero for the pain. Only hot packs and oxychodone & about 12 hrs until it got better. But my white count rose a huge amount in the 24 hrs after the injection.

Hi all, I'm still here but have been fighting a vicious cold. Managed to keep exercising & eating well until yesterday when the coughing kicked in. Now I'm just trying to ride it out.
The last couple days have been hard. We lost a good friend yesterday to a positively horrible disease (CJD). She was only diagnosed a few months ago & her family is understandably devastated. The service is tomorrow & I am just hoping to feel well enough to go. Her DH is an oncologist & was so supportive & so available when I was first diagnosed - I just wish that there was something I could do for him now.
JunieB, you are dealing with so much that I feel guilty complaining about a measly cold. I wish I had a magic wand & could get you out of that hospital! But I am sending support & hugs. Just keep thinking about Kirby & getting home to him!
Inna, sending good vibes your way, too. You & DH have been through too much lately. Hope things get better soon. And don't stress about your cording. I'm more than 18 months post-surgery & rads & still have a cord. It's so well stretched that it doesn't limit my range of motion at all so I just ignore it! (My LEPT worked on it for weeks & I continue the PT exercises she showed me but it is incredibly stubborn.)
Ksusan, great news about the scans (yes, let's assume both were fine since you haven't heard otherwise). Your discipline is inspiring; I'm so impressed with how much you've accomplished!
And Vamp, you are are another inspiration! I love your attitude (& your recipes!). How are you feeling these days?
JJo, hang in there; you're doing really well & you've already survived a lot. It will get better & we're all here for you.
Welcome, Kickin'. You keto chicks are hardcore!
Egads, please don't abandon us!!! I love - & NEED - this thread. I think your recipe link is a great idea & when I can taste things again (stupid cold!) I promise to make some contributions. And thanks so much for the collagen tutorial! I think I'm going to add that to my diet. (Just curious, is there any risk that one can get too much?)
I'll wrap up with some questions for all you cave chicks:
1. With the limited (or non-existent) dairy we eat, are you taking calcium supplements? If so, how much? (I just don't think my MO is recommending a high enough dosage but I plan to ask my PCP to check my levels when I see her in November.)
2. If you take magnesium, do you take it in a single dose? If so, when do you take it?
3. When you do eat dairy, do you go with full-fat or something else?
4. Last but not least, has anyone taken a cold pill that actually relieves all your symptoms (particularly the cough & congestion)?
Thanks in advance!
-
Egads,
Thanks!
DIEP is happening next Tuesday. Glad I stumbled upon this group. With quite a bit of downtime coming my way, I will pop in and keep ya updated on the progress. #Igotthis
-
JKL, for colds I usually take Aleve-D. I swear, it’s a magic pill. My condolences on the death of your friend. So many good people died this year, it’s just mind boggling.
Junie, so sorry you are in the hospital again. My mother had cellulite twice, both times she ended up in the hospital as well. Stay strong!
Egads, are you serious? This is, like, the only diet thread I follow, and frankly, mostly for the hilarious posts you Paleo chicks are writing. Please keep it open! I’ll throw in a Keto pulled chicken recipe if anyone is interested.
Thank you all for the good vibes.Today was the funeral. My husband has lost it completely up there, and I wasn’t there to support him. Damn this disease.
-
Hiya Peepers!
Just a quick note (ha ha!) as I have an insane schedule ahead of me today. My question to y'all only came from dwindling cave membership, concerns about my contributions and add to that that I've been feeling like HELL since the weekend (hello flu/sinus season). It all combined into what might have seemed like a massive pity party. My apologies if it came across that way. The dwindling numbers were my main concern. Your responses made my heart sing....and thank goodness because my voice box sure can't
)))
I LOVE our thread, and each and every one of you cave chicks...you're family to me! I've learned so much from y'all and your support is priceless. *soppy group hug* I'm sincerely thrilled that we all want the Cave fires to continue burning!
Back with responses to all of you, but...
Inna - Huge hugs!!!! My love to you and hubby!
JKL - GREAT questions....most of which I have/had too. Quick and dirty: mag can be taken any time in single dose, but some take at bedtime if sleep is an issue. Collagen best by food, tablespoon per day by powder...vitamin C is essential for adsorption, so consider this as well. Overdosing is a real possibility (with any supplement) and is why food = best way. Dairy, full fat ALWAYS. Cold meds (awww darlin!) Tylenol cold and cough for me! More on all this later! I'm thinking KSuze is going to be a huge help on these questions.
Vamp - casserole done....tweaked though because the orig recipe really is a thick sauce for pasta. Without the pasta starch it becomes soup. Secret...prepare with spag squash and bake. My Cavedude now has a crush on you!
Your recipe on the right, Juniebee's Alfredo on the left...
Yours out of the oven...
Aaaaaand my time is out, damn it! Love to all..will be back with my usual long yappy replies to your posts.
May the Cave live long and prosper!...now, if only my sinus would get in line with that
)))))
-
Oh Junie that's awful that this is something that can just keep happening! Grrr this stupid disease, it really doesn't go away with all the SE's we have afterwards. Hugs hun, sending good vibes you will not have to have the Grannix!
JKL - I got nothing on the cold for you, at one of my jobs I was nicknamed goose due to my darn cough that comes with every cold. lol As for magnesium I have a powder form that I add to water and drink it in the am. I eat dairy still and go with the full fat - it's what I have read to do with Keto and with the odd time Primal has it. I currently don't take calcium...hummm maybe I should ask about that!
Inna - I am always up for a good recipe would love for you to post it! Especially if it is easy to make.
Kickin - welcome!
Ok ladies I got another book in from the libray - 21 Day Total Body Transformation to get me to the Primal state. First thing to do was clean out the cupboards and fridge. Well I just emptied the cupboard and boy is it bare! My husband and DS1 are going to be sooo mad, but you know what, they can eat what I eat or go out for a treat. If the temptation is not here than I will get to my goal of feeling better faster and easier! Next is the fridge and basement, but first work and a confortation with my employer!
-
I agree with Egads's advice on magnesium etc. I take a supplement twice a day, and if I'm having muscle cramping I add a tablespoon of mag citrate powder in water.
-
Egads007
Your posts are very informative and fun, maybe take a short break to recover from all the "ugh" if it's feeling to much?
Vampeyes
Sending best wishes on your 21 day transformation.
Tiny update: I been told I can't start working out again until end of November. Considering I have gained 10 pounds since surgery I have to figure out away with diet to keep my weight level and stop gaining more. With my funds being stretched and the fact I'm after surgery now it's going to be more plant based then meat based. So it looks like chicken and veggie casseroles heavy in the veggie are in my future.
Best of luck to all and quick healing to those in the thread who are dealing with health issues.
-
Doctor was just here and my ANC has only increased to 0.77, but yay! NO Grannix.
The plan at this point is to stay inpatient for one more day of IV antibiotics, then discharge home tomorrow. Bloodwork on Monday at MO's office.
JKL - There is NO need to feel guilty about expressing your frustration regarding your cold. Being sick (whatever the cause) is never fun and quite disruptive to our normal routines.
Vamps - Good for you on cleaning out the cupboards of the bad foods. Stay strong despite your family's objections. They'll reap the benefits too once they see how you are feeling better as you continue the Paleo journey and hopefully they'll get on the bandwagon with you.
How do they like the recipes you've made so far?
Print a copy of the pic of 65 year old Mark Sisson and tape it to your refrigerator as a reminder of the benefits of the Paleo way.
Ok, until later ladies.
-
Yay, Junie! I'm glad to hear it!
