ksusan - I am guilty! No, I did not wear my compression sleeve. I tend to forget to put it on, plus I hate the thing because it causes so much limitation in the range of motion in my arm. Usually, it is when I feel the fluid pressure in my upper arm and chest that I remember to put it on. Bad, I know!

Hooray, though for your bloodwork results.

Egads - I had not thought of it before, but now that you've mentioned the Paleo idea for Kirby, I believe he is already Paleo. I feed him "The Honest Kitchen's-Embark" dog food. It is grain-free, dehydrated organic turkey, flax seed, carrots, bananas, cranberries, celery, coconut, spinach, apples, potatoes, eggs, kelp & a whole bunch of chelated vitamins and minerals. He seems quite healthy so far.

Also, as I said previously, I went to Costco on Thursday and as I was perusing the aisles I came across the vanilla and almost fainted. The price for a 16 oz. bottle of pure vanilla is now $34.99. Last Summer / Fall it was $27.00, it used to be $6.99 for the same 16 oz bottle. At that point I decided I was going to make my own vanilla. Until I realized it would have cost 5 times the amount to make it myself. I'd bought the bottle of vodka, but when I went to buy the vanilla beans, they where $8 - $10 each and I need 10 to make the stuff. So the total cost would have been like $125.00 for a quart of vanilla. Plus it takes 6 mos. for the vanilla to brew (so to speak) in your closet. So the $27.00 didn't look so bad at that point. So glad I still have some left. I think it might get me through the holiday's this year. Apparently there have been some really bad storms that have decimated the vanilla plants in the countries where it is grown, over the past few years. Baking is fast becoming a huge luxury at these prices.

Egads - I LOVE the idea of a cookbook! Thank you for sharing the pumpkin donuts recipe, can't wait to try it out. Today I am hoping to find the energy to hit up the grocery store and come back to cook some meals for the freezer. Energy level is dropping and without the ready made meals is equaling time spent in Vegas! (Although my husband is enjoying his time in Vegas, I on the hand am not.) I dream of when they figure out what is wrong with me and fix it!

Ksusan - YAY for good bloodwork! How did you feel after eating the wheat?

Junie - That's crazy for vanilla - I think that is what it costs at Costco over here in Canada! Check amazon for pricing?

Well off to get my grocery list made, send me energy ladies!! I am going to need it!!

Ksusan; I always had trouble with low HDL. I thought maybe it was genetic in my case but then mine increased. The only things I could identify as changes were I started eating more nuts, started taking Vitamin D and I started getting natural sunshine too, because I read it improves your immune system.

I was way behind and kind of skimmed through to catch up just now. I have been on a trip to Nashville with some BCO sisters from the exercise thread. We had a great time but I did not Paleo it. Having a southern family, I enjoyed eating like my grandma used to cook including biscuits, chicken and dumplings, fried apples and apple crisp-oh and pimento mac and cheese. From now on we can change the phrase from “went to vegas” to” went to nashville” and its the same effect for me. I am glad to be up only 1.2 lbs.

Vamp - Amazon.com has pure vanilla extract for $33.92 (McCormick) to $69.99 (Madagasgar Bourbon) a bottle. Then there's a brand called Shanks that is $134.97. NOPE!!!! This may very well be my last holiday season of doing any baking if Mother Nature doesn't straighten up and fly right.

You may be able to grow a vanilla orchid at home if you can create the conditions it requires. The good news is that with global warming, soon you'll be in the right heat/humidity zone and can grow them in your yard!

Monday again?!?!!? Vegas so soon?!?!? Morning Cave Chicks!!

Apparently, and according to TwoH, if you're south of the Mason Dixon line it's actually...…

    image

    :))))))))))))))))

I have to confess to eating too many of the donuts I posted over the weekend. Side note: keep them in the fridge if you make them, chilling makes the texture so much better (kinda damp inside if left at room temp). The chilled donut paired with a steaming mug of Ksuze's addiction coffee coloured our world on Sunday! The colder temps have us smack dab into 'you have to hibernate soon, so carb up!' mode. Yeah, we're not far off from squirrels & bears :))))))) No matter, the delish little buggers have been frozen and are off the table for a while.

KsuzeWOOT! I felt relieved reading your AC1 results (bet you did too lol!)….and a big high 5 to you! At last, good news for all your dedication. Keep us posted on your PCP appt pls. I've always envied social smokers. I was a diehard pack a day kid. Smoked my last cig 10 minutes before my first chemo, charming eh? Funny, I don't miss wheat or grain, but 5 years later I still get the odd fleeting crave to light up. My sister would commiserate with you regarding fish and the gag reflex. Like you, she tolerates it weekly. I cooked her up a simple pan fried white fish with a savory salsa topping and she found it helped hide the fact that it was fish (lol) and enjoyed it…somewhat. She also prefers it 'breaded' in almond flour accompanied with a sauce of some type. I supposed you've done the rounds of recipes though. Tough one. Btw darlin', I'll finish up by saying…"Suze you're gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod Nissan" I really hope you know the song, otherwise my last statement won't make sense….par for the course :))))))

JunieBee – No wonder Kirby is so darned handsome and full of vim & vigor!! He's Paleo!! Awww bless him, I didn't think I could love him any more than I already do, but this only puts the icing on the paleo cake :)) As for the high price of vanilla….oy vey! That is crazy. Thankfully I stocked up last year. Kudos for thinking of making your own, although, yeah, too much. Paleo can be an elitist diet to a great degree, I guess that's the cost for healthy eating. This is why I started my Egad's Test Kitchen, to hopefully help ward peeps off of truly bad recipes. I hate waste, especially at the prices we pay for ingredients. Great article! Thank you for posting.

Mark Sisson is my primal/paleo guru (tons of links in the orginal post here to check out), and was my resource when checking into and posting about collagen. I only hope to be in the shape he is at 65.....

    image

    Not too shabby eh? ;)

Vampriella – Ok babycakes, you're on! I think a good start would be deciding the slant we want to take….a cookbook on great substitutes? Clean eating? Easy Peasy? Then we can round up and start getting them organized. We also need a title…Clubs over fingers (forks over knives)? :))) So we need a report on your Sunday cooking marathon….how did it go?

    Last, but certainly NOT least…

TwoH – Hiya!! So glad to see you post, welcome back! I saw the pic of you gorgeous gals in the exercise thread….looks like fun times! If all you gained is 1.2 then you didn't go hog wild….and I bet it was enormously good for the soul! In honour of your roots I'm going to try to duplicate the foods you listed. I'm as northern as they come but looooooveeeee southern cooking. My doc said my last slightly lower HDL was genetic…..I say it was a cut down in cardio time. I guess I'll see at the next test as I've increased it.

Okey Dokey, so I'm on a baking bender lately and hope to be posting recipes soon looking onwards to the US Thanksgiving and Christmas. Specifically pastry for pies and breads. I've ran into a few stumbling blocks but working through. Most of the year I avoid baking, but life balance dictates 'oh hell yeah, it's time to eat!" I'll do my best to weed out the duds.

Onto the gym (yay) and then housework (blech)…..hope your day doesn't include housework peeps!

Well, I spent 6 hours in my kitchen cooking meals for the freezer and one for dinner. I now have Chili; Chicken Chowder; Junie's Broccoli Alfredo and Shepherds Pie in the freezer and we had cabbage rolls for dinner. All meals were changed to be Paleo friendly. I took no pictures, and was so tired at the end of it.

I think for the cookbook what I am finding difficult is quick and easy snacks - for home and on the go as well as easy meals to prepare when I am too tired to think. I am waiting for the library to get Mark's Instant Pot Cookbook. Picked up his Keto Reset Diet from the library today for some hopefully easy recipes!

Have to say that my energy level has dropped and exercise has not been my friend in almost a week. I try to do my squats to keep those leg craps away though. I want to go work out right now, but also want to nap! I will be walking with the boys soon, at least will get about 50 minutes of that in. Maybe save a weight workout for tomorrow.

Egads, I've had tuna salad, shrimp, and scallops so far this week, and I hear that I'm having a curried Thai salmon dish at a gathering with students later this week.

I just ate an apple. It was almost too sweet! I expected my weight to go back up today, but I was down another .5#--by my home scale, I'm down 17.5# in 12.5 weeks. 3.5# to get to what I weighed the morning of my BMX.

Had my PCP appointment today. She suggested labs again in 3 months, hydrate more, back off some meat and animal fats, increase above-ground vegetables (all of which I proposed) and yes, if I'm reintroducing some grains because of upcoming professional travel and Christmas chez nous, do it now in case the gastric effect is unfortunate. She was not concerned by my handful of wacky levels, and was delighted by my A1c.

I walked to my appointment and then on to work. On the way, I stopped at a natural grocery and bought 4 fresh shitakes and a small bunch of broccoli (and an apple). In my building's cafe, I got a coffee with heavy cream and a hardboiled egg. In my office I had a small box of organic chicken broth, olive oil, and a little salami. First I improved my coffee with MCT oil, cinnamon, stevia, black pepper, and turmeric, then I prepped my soup. Yummy! Ready to teach!

OMG I HATE when I lose a long reply!!!! Oh Egads get over yourself, all your replies are long :)))) Sheesh.

Vamp - Awesome on the food prep, it'll save you time and stress. Your body is telling you something, listen to it and rest. Sliding into the guilt zone is counterproductive. Trust me the squats and lunges will be waiting for you when you bounce back. For now, rest, you have a lot going on medical, no wonder you're tired!

KSuze -YAY!!! 5 more down!!!! I hope your smile is outshining the sun, mine is! Great to see the PCP isn't freaked out by the wonkiness, and it'll be interesting to follow along in 3 months time. Unfortunate gastric results.......unfortunate, uncontrollable and LOUD, at least that was our experience after one restaurant meal that I SWEAR had hidden wheat. Love the soup!! Looks fab, bet it tastes fab too. I'm putting something together for the cavedude's dinner tonight. I'm using leftovers and am calling it "The Kitchen Sink Casserole". Wish I'd seen your soup earlier, he'd probably appreciate it much more :))

    Good evening ladies,

As you may remember I was complaining about my elbow being painful. Well yesterday it was like a 9 on the 0-10 scale. I kept my compression sleeve on and laid low all day yesterday. So guess what I saw this morning when I was fixing my coffee? Yep, red spots on my right forearm. I spent the afternoon in the ER. Thankfully I was able to come home with oral antibiotics and will see the MO tomorrow. However, the red spots have spread, but it is happening slower than in my previous episodes, so the MO said I didn't have to return to the ER tonight YAY!!!! Kirby is with his trainer, so my apt. is very empty right now. But he is apparently having a lot of fun with another dog being boarded with his trainer. Anyway Major Bummer! I really don't like that guy!

Also, since today is Vegas Day, I'll admit to my having pizza for dinner tonight. Didn't feel like cooking after this afternoon.

Egads - No joking, Mark Sisson looks great! More like a 45 year old rather than 65. Also, really cool coffee mugs. Last night I watched a show called "Vets Saving Pets" and the veterinary clinic is located in Toronto. Part of the episode was filmed at the Toronto Zoo.

Vamps - 6 hours of cooking is a lot. No wonder you're tired. Did you try the Chicken Alfredo before putting it in the freezer? I need to make some myself.

Well I will bid you all goodnight for now. Rest well.

Junie - we have had your chicken broccoli alfredo a few times now - love it! I can't wait to try it with Shrimp next time! Thank you so much for sharing that recipe!

Egads - I made those pumpkin muffins and they are a hit with me and the cavekids. My Lucas has said that he would give up pie and eat the way I am suppose to. I think we are going to give that a try so he can see why I struggle to stay on track! lol It's more some days you just crave certain foods and that craving takes over my entire mind until I cave and then I can go about doing what I want to do. So weird - I need therapy on this! hahaha

JKL - how are you doing? Did you have your cake with your adorable granddaughter yet? How was it?

Jade - How you doin darlin? On the mend?

    Morning Peepers!

JunieBee - Daaang girlfriend, more spots! I hope it stays under control! Hopefully it was the pizza that caused it :)))))))))))) Sheesh though, you really have been through the wringer! What's up with Kirby's trainer? I feel very protective of the Kirbster and not liking this trainer already LOL! Keep us posted!

Vampriella - Awwww Lucas is too sweet! My son said "no friggin way am I eating that" LOL soooo supportive. Glad you enjoyed the donuts and oh yeah I hear you. This time of year we naturally crave carbs. Makes sense as we haven't evolved past living in caves....you really needed extra fat 10,000 years ago to see you through the winter. Check out how fat squirrels get right before hibernation. The same happens to me every fall....hence the donuts. So no, you don't need therapy....just willpower made of steel lol! If you find some send it my way :))))))))

I'll second and add to Vamp's list of shout outs.....Inna (godda davida) how for art thou? (poor middle English grammar there :)))))

For your reading pleasure or perhaps displeasure, it's once again...…….

TWO CENT TUESDAY!! - So let me get to the point, let's roll another joint (Tom Petty)

As of midnight tonight Canada will be toddling out of childhood and running headlong into adolescence a'la Woodstock style. Yesiree, legalized marijuana nationwide! Legalization comes via our liberal government and is one of the election platform promises Prime Minister Justin has followed through on. Hey Justin! We're still waiting for the return of door to door mail delivery you promised!!! I'm sick of having to climb a mountain of plowed snow in order to get to my street mailbox….and while you're at it, PLEASE get us a plow operator with up-to-date prescription lenses! :))))))))))

Legalization has created much Canadian debate over the last year between detractors and supporters. Rightly so, it's a touchy subject that can bring out the animal in both sides. What it brings out in me is concern. I don't think enough health/repercussion research was done, and Canadian law enforcement is woefully lacking in the means to deal with those possible repercussions (specifically driving offences). The RCMP here has been screaming for staff, training and a means of detecting roadside offenders, all with few results. In my opinion the government is rubbing its hands together in glee at the thought of increased tax dollars and huge savings (eg: huge additional consumer tax dollars and the $500 million spent in enforcing present marijuana offences alone). I really don't think the government gives a flying fig about our welfare at the end of the day, and this is where my concern is born.

If we take heed of the 5 year results in Colorado & Washington we see that the effects so far have been relatively less than compared to what was predicted. Detractors in these places thought Colorado & Washington would be chock full of 'reefer madness', and most of the population would be running around naked in parking lots singing Kumbaya, while breaking into cars. That didn't happen. What did happen however was an increase in traffic related fatalities (pot), increased homelessness, and increased pressure on the health care system. Sadly the health care increase was due to hospitalization of many more children ingesting mom's homemade brownies. Yep, little Johnny can't tell the diff between Betty Crocker and Mary Jane. How sad. Pot has an estimated 10% addiction rating, and is classed as a schedule 1 narcotic. Will that number increase with legalization? No clue, but a recent poll shows that because of legalization 10% more Canadians will be rolling up joints that previously didn't. Interesting food for thought.

I can count the number of times I've been high on one hand, it's just not for me. It makes me jittery and paranoid after about 30 minutes of hysterical laughing. Thing is, I don't have a problem with any adult that has an asshat of a boss sparking up a blunt at the end of the day to take the edge off. I have no problem with peeps that just enjoy the calming buzz, even on a regular basis. There is no difference between this and swilling down a cocktail….and that cocktail can cause much worse wear on the body than weed. Medically speaking I'm all for it….100%, pot, (along with a host of other plants) shows very interesting results for many conditions including cancer, so yeah, all good.

My concerns aren't on the ethical side, and I hope my 'inner prude' isn't showing. I truly don't view pot smokers as the burnout/criminal/hippy dippy folks that a lot of detractors do. It would be hypocritical of me to generalize, hell I love a good glass of merlot and the calming buzz it brings so who am I to judge? It's the possible negative repercussions that are my concern. Will readily available weed have an effect on my family's road safety? One more fatality is too many IMHO. Will my neighbor's sweet little girl be rushed to the ER after thinking mom's weed was a consumable goodie? Will someone I know become homeless? I hope to hell not! Time will tell....and that's my 2 cents.

So what say y'all? Any concerns with legalization? Yea or nay?

Junie, so sorry! I hope it resolves quickly.

As to marijuana, I appreciate being able to buy a topical ointment for the ongoing pain around my port scar. I haven't noticed people driving worse than they already did, nor am I seeing traffic accidents reported as associated with being high.

So, ah maybe we shouldn't add Paleo "special" brownies in the cookbook? 🤪

My two cents - I just hope our government will take some of that money and put it towards Police and Health Care! Although the Liberals really aren't the brightest bulb in the bunch, so likely the money will go to raises all around the table! 🤬

Special brownies may also be a problem for some because THC may be estrogenic.

I'm cooking up some artichokes to eat cold with mayo tonight. I think we'll also be making vegan pesto this evening. I have imaging tomorrow and can't eat after 6:50 AM, so I'll be up early eating something well-hydrating and with good sticking power.

Vamp - I’m sure the money will be put in all the right pockets:))))) recipe for the green bean dish when you can please. I need a new approach to the little green buggers and that looks tasty!

KSuze - Artichokes are near and dear to my heart...and sounds like a yummy dinner! Every time I have to involuntarily fast for tests I feel like I’ve been starved for a week...in your shoes I’d probably have an entire roast consumed by 6:49 ;))) All the best with the imaging and keep us in the loop. With you in spirit!!

Tonight was Sole...supposed to be Vamp’s recipe but I got yakking to my better half and totally forgot...made it from a Ramsay recipe, easy peasy and purdy good. Green beans were boring, as was the asparagus, salad...too much green...Too bad it wasn’t St. Paddy’s day!

Can somebody repost the chicken Alfredo recipe, please? Lost it somehow.

I am on my second week of rads. So far so good, except tiredness in the evening and mild itching right after the treatment. Cording is almost gone, thank God. A couple more PT sessions should get rid of it, hopefully.

This weekend we were blindsided by my husband's aunt's massive stroke. She died on Monday, poor lady. We loved her very much. My DH is en route to Denver, where she lived, for the funeral. My DH has a horrible year: first I was diagnosed, then his 50 year old cousin died unexpectedly, then his aunt died in Israel, and now another one in Colorado. He usually bottles up his emotions inside, but this time it's just impossible. It feels like we've been crying for months. I don't even have thepower to write anymore.

Egads - I think you misunderstood what I said. Kirby loves his trainer. She loves him too. She is very good with him.

I was trying to be a bit funny with the Major Bummer comment. It has nothing to do with the trainer, just the fact that my arm is infected AGAIN!

I am back in the hospital getting IV antibiotics. The oral one had zero effect on the infection. The spots just spread and my arm is double in size, red & hotter than hades. This is four times this year.

It is 4:40 a.m. and I am awake and listening to the news. Hospitals are not the ideal place to get any sleep. However, pain meds are kicking in and I may get to catch a few more winks of sleep.
