"Life is not all sadness," Old Hawk continued. "Yet, without sadness we would not yearn for joy, and strive to find it, and treasure it when it comes. It is also a fact that neither sadness nor joy is with us constantly. And how often one of the other is part of our journey is not always within our control. We all want joy more than sadness and rare is the person who wants sadness at all."

Yesterday was a perfect day for celebrating Labor Day. Sunny and not too hot. The potluck supper and karaoke all went well. Adults and children seemed to have a good time.

I was awakened about 6 am this morning with a LOUD clap of thunder that made me jump. After that I just dozed, never really fell asleep again. It's mainly overcast today with occasional brief appearances of sunshine. Some folks have already gone home and others are staying until tomorrow.

Jackie, I admire you for keeping your car clean.

    Happy Sunday to all.

Pretty day here, but the weather report indicates we may get up to 91 degrees today. Hotter than I like. There doesn't seem to be much breeze either. Well, we do have a lot of shade around here so we shouldn't be too bad. Also -- no concrete/asphalt around either. We have one small concrete sidewalk here -- the rest are wooden walkways. I hope the rest of the day is just as pretty.

88 already--stormed briefly last night, but not sure if more rain will materialize; so will judge by how the soil feels & the leaves look. Good day to grill, but Bob's working late. They're saying "afternoon storms" tomorrow, so I hesitate to call Gordy & my friends to invite them over (I'd said Thurs. at my godson's going-away BBQ I'd be grilling Monday), but I guess we'll just have to Plan B it with cast iron skillets indoors. Place is a mess--I'm not much of a housekeeper but I'm a good hostess (or "balabusta," as my mom used to say in Yiddish).

Happy Labor Day. It will be hot and humid here but I've started a couple of projects in the house so I can stay busy. Actually, I'm always a work in progress here. I like variety and to be able to change things. I'm reaching a point where I'm working less and able to go back to some of my "fun" adventures of changing ( while cleaning, of course ) things that have become stale or that seems as though they aren't adequate choices for how we are living now. So, I got that started yesterday and will just move on with it today. Spoiler alert --- had to HELP dh notice that some things had been changed in the kitchen. As one of those items was the kitchen table I thought he would notice. Guess he was especially tired so he is off the hook.

Pretty day here in northern MN but it was cold when we got up at 8:45, in the low 50's. We turned on the heat pump in the camper. Now it's comfy.

I should go to the gym but not sure that I will. I definitely have to go to a supermarket, probably Walmart, and buy some mayo. It's an emergency when we run out of Hellman's Light.

Yesterday afternoon was quite a scene as a group of the resort guys busied themselves getting the boat lifts up the creek from the docks on the lake. They used 4-wheelers to pull the lifts (floating on huge Styrofoam blocks) up onto the land. The lifts will sit there all winter until spring when the same process will be reversed. These MN and ND men are very handy when it comes to getting things done. Fortunately the water in the creek is shallow enough that they wade in the water and push the lifts.

    Happy Labor Day.

Stormed last night. Made it up to 90 early this aft., and then the storms rolled in. One, around 3pm, turned the sky almost black and scared the cats so much that they meowed until I lay down on my back so they could soothe themselves by kneading on me. Cleared up for awhile, so I cleaned the grill grates--but the gas venturis were still too wet to light. So I hauled out the cast-iron skillets to cook indoors. Made a Caprese and garlic toasts just as the deluge resumed. So folks will be coming by starting about 6pm. I have chips & dip (guac & pico de gallo) and some homegrown heirloom cherry tomatoes to nibble till the steaks are ready to pan-sear, the elotes ready to nuke (precooked, just till the cheese melts) and the shishito peppers ready to blister. BTW, it's 73 now!

Carefully observe the natural laws in operation in the world around
you, and live by them. From following them, you will learn the morality
of modesty, moderation, compassion, and consideration (not just one
society's rules and regulations), the wisdom of seeing things as they
are (not of merely collecting "facts" about them), and the happiness of
being in harmony with the Way (which has nothing to do with self-
righteous "spiritual" obsessions and fanaticism). And you will live
    lightly, spontaneously, and effortlessly.

I was dressed to go and play women's golf when we had a rain shower. Fair weather golfer that I am, I called and cancelled. Even if it doesn't rain more during the afternoon (it's supposed to), the fairways would be wet.

This rain today is supposed to bring in cooler, less humid weather. Our low tonight is forecast to be in the 40's. Definitely fleece blanket temperatures.

Just had a call from Emily with Student Loan Forgiveness Center! Does no good to block these numbers, but I keep doing it.

    Happy Tuesday to all.

Beautiful morning here. Sounds like our cooler weather is having a slight delay, but still coming so that is good. Quite a day yesterday, but looking for a smoother one today. Cleaning my small pantry and ugg, found some weevils in the cereal -- filled up a trash bag and after cleaning put bay leaves all around the pull out tray of the pantry. Weevils shun bay leaves. After a couple of days I can return newly purchased cereal to the tray. Then after closing the doors -- a crash of sorts. One of the posts had given up on a shelf -- so that had to be emptied again, and waited for Dh to get home from work. He knew where the correct posts were in the garage. So, really a normal day -- but one of the frustrating normal ones. I'm still full of gratitude that my problems are small and pretty fixable fairly quickly.

So looking like early Fall outside...which isn't a happy thought too much but necessary so the woods can have a rest. Hope you are al going to have a great Wednesday.

It definitely feels like fall here in northern MN today. I'm wearing jeans and long-sleeved shirt as I walk back and forth to the laundry room. At some time today I plan to go for a brisk walk.

DH is playing golf. Good luck to him with this wind blowing.

    Happy Wednesday.

Fall has triggered DH to harvest all the fruit trees (including crab apples that are tiny little balls). We have a program called City Fruit that will take your harvest excess and donate it to food banks. They'll even net your trees in the spring to foil bugs. It looks pretty awful though and unfair to birds IMHO. Sunny here today with highs predicted to be 82 (newspaper) or 78 (radio). We'll see who's closest. After errands I'm going to pick up dead leaves and tidy the plants.

There is no physician like cheerful thought for dissipating the ills of the body; there is no comforter to compare with good will for dispersing the shadows of grief and sorrow. To live continually in thoughts of ill will, cynicism, suspicion, and envy, is to be confined in a self-made prison hole. But to think well of all, to be cheerful with all, to patiently learn to find the good in all—such unselfish thoughts are the very portals of happiness; and to dwell day by day in thoughts of peace toward every creature will bring abounding peace to their possessor. -James Allen

What a gorgeous day we're having. It was in the 40's this morning. I went to the gym in my jeans and sweatshirt and changed into shorts and tee shirt there. Worked up quite a sweat with 30 minutes on the upright bike and 20 minutes on the treadmill.

It's upper 60's and sunny outside. DH did some mowing earlier and I'm simmering a pot of spaghetti sauce.

    Happy Thursday.

This is really sort of a bummer, but then again something we don't get to influence too much. I so enjoyed this man's movies, but generally I don't think he had done too much lately.

    This from NBC News.

Burt Reynolds, charismatic star of 1970s blockbusters, dies at 82

Burt Reynolds, the Oscar-nominated actor whose mischievous grin and wily charm helped turn him into one of the icons of 1970s Hollywood, died on Thursday. He was 82.

Otherwise, trying to get odds and ends done. Cleaned off our deck and the windows ( 4 tall ones ) there and washed those same windows inside. Got the feral cats done, and moved a lot of recycles so they could be picked up and taken to the center. Too Bill out to the groomers so he could have his bath ( he is resting comfortably by my chair right now ) and picked him up after I had some lunch. Called Colorado and got my hearing aid batteries ordered. Have to do a reorder for my medicine in a bit, repackage some meat I got yesterday from the store and I have a couple loads of laundry to do. If I keep moving I'll have a little progress on the books and that will be nice.

Hope you are all having a really fine day.

Our relationships are our sacred responsibilities, for they are the framework within which life is lived. They show us where we have more learning and loving to do. Our interactions with others call up the disabling beliefs and negative patterns of behavior we need to release—the cynicism, anger, resentment, and jealousy that block love's flow. Our relationships are our mirrors; they reflect where we are in consciousness. And if we are willing to face the truth about ourselves, our relationships offer the lessons that lead to our greatest transformation. -Susan L. Taylor

Rained this morning already. Seems to be okay at the moment but I think we could get more. If not through the day, it is said more will come tonight and into Saturday for sure. Well, it will help keep it cooler so not all bad. Though we have some of the super first dry leaves trying to exit our trees we seemed to have had enough rain so far this season to keep us greener longer w/o the parched lawn syndrome that has happened so often the past few yrs.

I'd almost hate having the trees netted around here. We don't put out seed of any type so don't have a lot of birds, but feeling -- everything has to eat. Sometimes there aren't great answers to things. I do take some left over food and toss it ( when its dry ) as far down the ravine as I can get it. Usually, even our dogs won't go down so I figure some living creature has the opportunity to have something they might not otherwise. It is just not real consistent.

Glad I did so much outdoor work yesterday since there won't be much today. I have any number of things to catch up on so I'll stay busy.

I knew someone with a peach tree. They netted one branch for him, one for her, and left the 3rd for the birds. I enjoy watching birds too much to want my trees netted. We have a bird bath, small bird feeder, and 2 hummingbird feeders, plus a chemical-free yard for natural foods.

We're supposed to get rain tonight and over the weekend, then temps in the 60's next week. The weather man says our 80 degree days are over. I love both spring and fall. I love the leaf displays here.

We're gonna have to prune back our magnolia once the leaves fall, before the snow falls--it's gotten so spread out that it's shading too much of the deck. Our landscaper can do that, but we'll need an arborist to cut back the giant ailanthus (aka "tree of heaven" or "tree grows in Brooklyn") that--along with some of our neighbor's ash--is shading our lawn to such an extent that the grass is hardly growing. Good thing we didn't pop for a sod job, which wouldn't have "taken." The ash is also brushing our garage roof and satellite dish; the ailanthus is actually cradling some of our power & phone lines.

ChiSandy, isn't it always something with a house?? We had a tree man out this week to give us a price on taking down some trees that are too tall now as close to the house as they are. We've lived here almost thirty years so....now a few of these trees scare me. Barring any storm damage that ties him up, he should get his crew here in four or five weeks. We've heard that song before though. The last tree guy committed to us about three years ago and hasn't shown up yet. The joys of small town life. Not!!!

We have a great arborist in Evanston (just over the city line, 2-3 miles north of us) who saved our magnolia when it was attacked by scale a couple of years ago. He also pruned back our honey locust that was brushing not only our but our neighbor's (on the other side) roofs. But this ailanthus is gonna be a bear (tricky to avoid hitting the power lines). I expect it to be at least $1K. Our attic ceiling will be $650 for labor...paint, drywall board & new insulation extra. And the new water-pressure booster pump (plus new gauges & pumps) will be >$2300. Ah, the joys of the ol' money-pit...after 31 yrs., to be expected. Deck & porch will need staining, and interior staircase needs several risers reinforced or replaced. Then there are new windows...

ChiSandy, we got new windows two years ago (cha-ching$$) and always have a list of things to do, either us or the experts. I love the windows though-so easy to tilt in and clean!DH has just spent seven days in a row removing some old landscaping bushes, re-grading and planting new grass and border plants all along the driveway. We live on about 45 acres so there is way more work than one man can do. I'm grateful I am well enough for him to have this "free" time to spend on the tractor and the land.

Ours, which came with the house when we bought it in '87, are also tilt-out Andersens (they were about 5 yrs. old). A couple have cracked panes, but all the frames would likely need replacing and they probably are non-standard and would need to be custom-made: so it'd be cheaper to replace each window & frame. (At least $1K per). I think the first floor ones could stay in place (except the two cracked panes) with just scraping & painting the frames; but a couple of years ago we had some snow-melt leaking that our roofer traced not to ice-damming in the gutters but leaky second-floor window wells & frames.

A lovely Saturday here, cool and sunny. It will warm up into the 70's. DH and I are planning to get our boat (unused this summer) out of the water and onto the trailer. He went down to the dock earlier to start the motor and it wouldn't start. I assume he's charging the battery now.

Things are very quiet in the resort. This will be the case in the month of September, since children are back in school and people are busy with events in their lives. Our neighbors, Mary and Lyman, who have lived in their camper all summer will be departing on the 21st to drive to FL and close on a house in Ocala that they are buying for a winter home.

If I weren't conscious of getting home and supporting my mother, DH and I might stay a week or two into October and see the fall leaves at the height of color.

    Wishing everyone a good Saturday.

I will greet this day with love in my heart.

And how will I do this? Henceforth will I look on all things with love and
I will be born again. I will love the sun for it warms my bones; yet I will
love the rain for it cleanses my spirit. I will love the light for it shows me
the way; yet I will love the darkness for it shows me the stars. I will
welcome happiness for it enlarges my heart; yet I will endure sadness
    for it opens my soul. I will acknowledge rewards for they are my due;
yet I will welcome obstacles for they are my challenge.

Oh my, pouring again this morning but then I knew from the forecast how likely it was. There are lots of flood warnings out as there would be when we have pouring rain for two days. We did get a few slight hours of reprieve yesterday. This too should slow down in the afternoon, but sounds like it will actually carry over into Sunday for a while as well. It seems more like the rains of Spring that we normally get and which came but not with THIS consistency we are having now I sure hope everyone stays safe and sound. The worst is always those who get caught out unaware or some who think the water isn't so high that they can't go ahead and slowly drive through it.

I'm tired already of the 'wetness' but as usual -- the only way out of it is through it. That advice applies pretty well to everything. It is a shame Carole that you can't stay for the Fall colors in MN, but then I'd be anxious to get home to a Mom too. Sometimes it takes longer for them to be at their best anyway. Who knows what this yr. might bring? I'm wondering about ours --- especially with our excessive rain right now. We are still quite green when normally the lawns would look a lot more dried out and sparse -- as well as some of the bushes. We really don't get the best until Oct/Nov. but this yr. I think no predictions.

Up here on the North Side we didn't get the rain that was forecast today, and they're calling for sunshine up here tomorrow too. High 60s day & night. So will have to bite the bullet and water the tomatoes & herbs tomorrow, backache or not.

Many of the most successful people I have known have never grown up. They have retained bubbling over youthfulness. They have relished wit, they have indulged in humor. They have not allowed " dignity " to depress them into moroseness. Youthfulness of spirit is the twin sibling of optimism. Resist growing up. B.C Forbes
