Hi guys, I’m back after eating my way around Japan. Definitely not low carb but as we were walking around 14 km a day the damage was only a 500 gram increase so I’ll take that.
The food was absolutely amazing but I’ve been back to LCHF for the last couple of days. I’ll leave my fasting until I’m a little more fat adapted.
Wondering if any of you food prep for the week on Sundays? I don’t finish work till 7 pm and by the time I get home it’s pretty late. My preference has always been to cook fresh but I’m wondering if throwing a few meals together on the weekend might make things a bit easier for me. I have a bit a a change coming up where my 2 young adult children are both leaving home shortly leaving me on my own. I’m always much better if I have other people to cook for and of course they both cooked during the week. I’m worried I’ll get lazy with no one else there and my eating habits will deteriorate.
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Oh I ate chicken sashimi. Guess that’s pretty paleo. It’s all the rage in Japan. Didn’t get salmonella which I’m eternally grateful for.

EGADS, so funny. You are such a hoot. Okay, I'm the misbehaving Cave Chickie.
When I have told the story of TB's in the DW, it was not unusual to hear EWHhhh that's GROSS!. But consider that eating utensils touch the inside of your mouth. Cups to a small degree too. Let's not talk about plate lickers. They are contaminated with whatever bugs are in your mouth. Yet we are accepting that our utensils are clean coming out of a DW.
The key factor you missed was he proved that the bacterial count was reduced to ZERO.
His project laboratory work was done at my hospitals laboratory. The culturing was overseen by a the Department Head who was a licensed Medical Technologist, using the same equipment that was used to study all cultures of the hospital. Very highest standards of testing.
Zero is equal to ZERO. That's why it was such a great project. You really don't want to know what bugs he cultured in the pretesting phase. There were test families that provided TB's initially, then weekly for three weeks.
One Mom said "I just don't want to know the results". I struggled with that one very hard, one of her sons initial TB's tested positive for Pseudomonas. Very bad bug. Very bad bug. Shouldn't be in the mouth, but could have been in the local bathroom environment. She was a clean freak.
The initial TB's were collected and tested to see what bacteria was present. I forget what I did b/c Psuedomonas is a very bad bug. Hmmm did I say it was a very bad bug? I must have done something b/c it would be completely out of character not to of acted. Still forget. But pseudomonas didn't doesn't ring a bell as being an issue after that. The day of the gathering the initial TB's and culturing, the participants were provided with new TB's that had been cultured to make sure they came bacteria free.
He proved that TB's could be decontaminated to a bacterial level of ZERO. Just like your forks, knives, and spoons.
Egads, please, think this through again. ZERO is equal to ZERO.
Then think if someone is in a reduced immune state, how it may help them?
Girl you are such a sweetie, Hugs

Shazzzz! Welcome back! You did really well with such a small increase, considering the grains you probably went thru. The walking (low slow cardio) is the best fat burner..so you've just proved the paleo point lol!! I bet you saw and did wonderful things... be sure to post about it. Chicken sashimi...well that's about as paleo as you can get....makes my cricket food adventure look like childs play. Glad you didn't get salmonella, but I suppose the standards on it are really high. As for freezer meals, I've been doing that for years now. I ALWAYS cook extra for freezing, even cauliflower rice, soups,stews, sauce, veggies, condiments, full meals, desserts..some in freezer bags flat packed to save space. Paleo is a lot of prep, and if you're tired or an empty nester, it's easy to slip into bad habits. Here's a few links (over 100 recipes in all) for ideas:
https://newleafwellness.biz/2016/10/25/31-paleo-crockpot-freezer-meals/
https://www.google.ca/amp/s/onceamonthmeals.com/blog/recipe-roundups/101-paleo-freezer-meals/amp/
Glad you're back, we missed you!
Sassy -big hugs right back! The DW & TB makes solid sense...and you make a great point, everything we put in the DW has touched our mouths. Omg you're not kidding, I have a friend that has pseudomonas and non stop UTIs.....AWFUL. I cannot wait to tell her to get her toothbrush into the DW!! You're 100% right, zero is zero. So glad you posted this......I suppose rinsing the brush before using, to remove any detergent residue would be wise? thank you again! Glad to see you back, you bad girl of cave chicks!

Day one of clean challenge under my belt. Carbs at 65 approx with rest of macros in line, few extra grams of protein though. In the gym for just shy of 2 hours, 11 moves with weights, 3 sets, 10-15 reps,45 mins of it cardio....killed it, felt good, hope it still does tomorrow lol.
Am I still doing this alone?
Echo, echo, echoooooo
)))))
-
Sorry, Egads, the rest of us have been partying at the border with all those Canadian & American bad boys. (Since we couldn't reach agreement on who to exchange, we just decided to share them all.) Didn't you get the memo?
-
ROFL!!! Dang!!! And there I was being all good girl healthy...no wonder it was so quiet in here! No I did not get the memo...who took my memo???
I bet there was drankin’ n dancin’ too!!
-
Egads , Tell your friend about the post on D-Mannose on IT. Plus, I'll send a PM
-
Sas, will do...can’t thank you enough! So glad we gave you here at BCO!!
JKL - still laughing
))
-
Muah Egads!
-
Sas you have restored my faith in dishwashers. That was a brilliant experiment!
I keep thinking how the original Paleos didn't use toothbrushes (just gnawed bones) and dental cavities only arrived with farming. Many of our ancestors lived with awful toothaches once they started eating grain and sugar. Sticky stuff on the teeth. One more reason to cut back carbs.
Egads, my mom loved bleach too although she didn't wash our toothbrushes with it LOL. I think overcleaning was all the rage post WWII. Maybe women had too much time at home once the men returned. But all that bleach was not good for us. I'll go with Sassy's son's dishwasher method.
Ate dinner out - salmon and veg. Left most of the rice. That's paleo right? Oops maybe not the glass of white wine 🙄.
-
Toothbrush in the dishwasher? I don’t know about that. Plus, I use electric one. Every week I just stick the head into the UV cleaner and change it every 2 months anyway. I bet our cave ancestors didn’t care about bacteria in their mouths. Sigh. First world problems... Well, I’ve made salmon and ratatouille for dinner, then went to Vegas and topped it off with some ice cream. Hey, don’t judge, I’ve only got my taste buds until Friday! AC #4 is coming...
-
One time when I went to Walmart I used one of their electric shopping carts and about 15 min. into the trip my eyes started to bother me. I kept rubbing them thinking it was allergies. I put allergy drops in my eyes when I got home. Nothing helped. When I got up the next morning I had a horrible case of "Pink-eye"! Guessing it was from the handles of the electric cart. Had to go to eye doctor for antibiotic drops. First & I hope the last time I ever get that.
Egads - I was on FB earlier and saw some interesting recipes from a Keto site. There was a recipe for chocolate chip cookies made with almond flour. Would these be ok within the Paleo realm?
Well it is 9:00 p.m. my time now. Only 16 more hours until I have my PET scan. The results will not available to me until I see the MO on the afternoon of the 12th. Tonight I am fasting in prep for the scan. Nothing but water to drink. I am making a sack lunch to eat as soon as my scan is over tomorrow.
Kirby (my Cairn Terrier) is at his trainers for a couple days and my apt. is soooooo empty feeling and quiet. But I know he is having a great time there. His trainer texted me to say that he was having a case of the "Zoomies", running all over and playing with the other dogs.
-
Good morning Cave Peeps!
Coffee in place, ready to roll.
Sassy - Got and replied to your PM.....mwwwwahhhh you gorgeous cave chick!
DearLife - Glad you mentioned the ancient's/farming/teeth, fascinating stuff, the bacteria directly responsible for tooth decay (streptococcus mutans, a strain of strep throat, which also damages the heart if left untreated) showed up about the time of farming. Once refined sugars come to be....well tooth decay (along with a host of other conditions) took off like wild fire. In modern times the advent of antibacterial products has just exacerbated the issue by killing the good germs that we need. Like handing the enemy the high ground. This makes the dishwasher method a great option. Good dental checkups.....another paleo or low carb living benefit! Omg the bleach....and ammonia cleaners....I remember having to go outside as a kid to stop my burning eyes and nose...what the heck were our mothers trying to do.....create operating room standards?? LOL! I think you nailed it....way too much time. Rice is a no-no Paleo, wine should be red, but white isn't the devil either. Besides, it goes so well with the salmon lol! I'm having your dinner tonight, can't decide how to prep it. Still would love to see your breakfast muffin with sundried toms recipe....would you consider posting on foodie Friday?
Inna (godda davida lol) - Never judgement here...ever. You are doing just fine! Like I said before, while in treatment, trips to Vegas and anything that makes life brighter has a green light. Besides your dinner (sounds yummy) rocked the paleo thing, it's all good. Read my comment to Dearlife above re: toothbrush in dishwasher....you're right, it's a modern thing. Are you switching over to taxol after #4 AC?? How have the SEs been so far? I ask because intermittent fasting during chemo can have an amazing reduction in SEs. Let me know and I'll pass on the details and study.
Junie - Hey darlin! I don't know if you saw my response to your July 4th post, but want you to know we have been missing and thinking of you....if you can let us know how it goes. Fingers, toes & eyes crossed for good PET results! We'll all be with you in spirit. I bet that packed lunch is going to be SO good after the PET...nothing like fasting to turn me into a hungry beast lol! Kirby is sooooo cute!!!! Awwww, he's got the zoomies...that's awesome...give him a hug for us, and one for yourself too. He's just too cute!!
JKL - Still chuckling the next day! (really struck my funny bone)....and still haven't found my memo.....who took it!?!?!?!
))))

TWO CENT TUESDAY
My perfect opinion
'Flawless'. The latest word that's skillfully being woven into the cosmetics industry's catch phrases. Flawless is also burning up Youtube, magazines, Instagram & Twitter. There is a cornucopia of products pushed at us ladies, all insisting that if you just plunk down your hard earned cash on one of the newest elixirs, you are guaranteed flawless skin, hair, lips, brows, lashes, bikini line, nails….dear lord, I saw an ad extolling the virtues of flawless heels & toenails. When did my feet suddenly have to be perfect?
Then there's the makeup, oh the makeup. Youtube tutorials showing a perfectly lovely young thing applying 53 layers of product, all aimed at a flawless, mask like finish. It seems that your natural bone structure isn't good enough anymore…..check this out:
Unless you're up for a supermodel Mac shoot, that is beyond the bounds of flawless. What's so wrong with her nose/cheeks/jaw that she has to develop DaVinci like skill to disguse the face we were born with? There was nothing wrong in the first place.
I'm not talking about a routine makeup that many of us enjoy (myself included), nor do I refer to covering up a pimple or dark eye circles. It's the word and what it implies that has my feathers in a ruffle. I play up the eyes, lips….have been known to highlight, conceal. I love 'putting on my face' for an evening out. I just don't feel the need to create perfection. My flaws are beautiful in their own way, damned if I'm going to disguise or reconstruct my face for anyone. What happened? Why did this happen? Why does 'my beauty' depend largely upon social media,Kim Kardashian and advertising to achieve flawless perfection? Perfection, really? Aw come on...life is hard enough.
What happened to us? Marie Curie won the nobel prize in 1903, we fought tooth and nail to get the vote in the 1920's, burnt our bras in the 60s, Sandra Day O'Connors supreme court appointment in 1981, 2005 saw Danica Patrick sweep the Indy 500, and most recently #Metoo. We've climbed and scrapped to enter the 'man zone' in all fields…..and haven't we showed em' our stuff, indeed we have!! Our female contribution is the stuff that true flawless is made of, yet after all this time the industry is now touting flawless. Sheesh!
There is enough pressure on the females of this world, our good work, our homes, our family & friends, and while we all want nice skin, less wrinkles and to be attractive, do we need the added pressure of presenting ourselves as flawless? I would fight to the death for anyone's right to wear what makes them happy, let's just take flawless out of the mix. Flaws are good, they make us human.
And that's my 2 cents. What say you all?
-
👋🏻 I have worked out yesterday and today!! Pretty excited that I’ve been able to run for a bit. And I’ve been low carb so I’m with you this week Egads!
I change our toothbrushes about every two weeks. I buy value packs of them.
As for “flawless”- I get what ya mean. If a woman was to really care about being flawless, it’d be a stressful life to live. Going to a PS for my surgery has really opened my eyes. I can’t believe all the procedures that are now available so one could try to achieve that “flawless” look or whatever it is some people are going for.
I just can’t wear that much make-up. Yuck. I’ll save my paint for canvas thank you very much 😊
-
Hey All! I sooo can't keep up with everything!! Jury duty yesterday..fun times! Was only there until 2, went home and napped for an hour!!
I think I have become addicted to ice cream... sigh.. I never ate it before...now, its like I'm making up for lost times!! And the stupid chest thing... not sure if its still residual (even though my dr, says I'm perfect) or from not doing enough... sigh but the air quality here in New Jersey has been atrocious so, I'm sure that's a contributing factor.. so gym or no gym? that is my question!
Never been much a of a make up gal myself.. I do for special occasions. Every once in a while, I'll have a "do it everyday" phase.. but it doesn't last...sorry, not that high maintenance of a gal! My husband thanks me profusely!
Oh and to add to Egads, do MEN ever worry about makeup? (not talking about trans, just regular husbands) uh, no they don't! do they die their hair? no, they look "distinguished" with "silver wings"... Funny meme I saw the other day:
"new product for men! Soap for all needs, hair, face, body, car, bike, couch!" Women: "here is a lovely lotion for your left elbow"!!
-
PS- on the toothbrush thing... we're supposed to change them?? lol... I swap out when I change the batteries in the smoke detector..
-
Map, I am in NJ too! It’s been so hot here, if I miss my 2 hour window in the early morning, I don’t go outside at all. Had maybe 2 good days in the last 2 weeks.
On the makeup front, i’ll Never understand why some people want to look flawless. And if they do, they better take good care of their skin rather than plastering a bazillion products to make someone think it’s flawless. I hate pretenses
-
Map1002 - thanks for the chuckle! I likely would change my that often as well if not for working in a dental office. For those who don't want to put them in the dishwasher, what about boiling them or is peroxide bad? Although Sas is correct, we put other things that have been in our mouths in there... heck some people put their dirty ashtrays in them.....now that calls for a big YUCK!
Flawless - bla ahahahaha I hardly wear make-up, just don't like the feel of it on my skin. I have started using a skin care regime since March, took a picture of myself and I looked so old I figured I had better start doing something about it. lol
Soooo this isn't the place for it, but my heart is breaking. My step dad has GI cancer, his dad, uncle, some cousins have had it, seems to be a genetic thing for his family. Last Monday I was up to the hospital for a visit and told him I would be back in a few days with the boys. We talked about playing UNO with them so they wouldn't be so bored, but I caught that darn cold and didn't want to chance giving it to him, he's been so weak. He was talking pretty normal, figured they were going to do physio in hopes of building some strength and send him home again. Yesterday I got the text that he was moved to hospice. I went today to see him, he couldn't talk, he's bed ridden, not sure if he knew we were there. I didn't expect such a fast decline, I feel so bad that I didn't go to the hospital to see him again, just suit up so I could visit with him. I told DS I was seeing if their other grandpa could watch them for a bit while I went up to see grandpa and he says, he hopes grandpa is talking tomorrow and able to hold cards to play UNO.
-
Egads, I absolutely agree with you about flawless! Don't we have more important thing to worry about than physical appearance? Who wants to be without flaws anyway? Sounds pretty boring to me!
I spent the day with my 10 year old granddaughter & she's way better than flawless! She's bright, enthusiastic, athletic, funny & caring. Today she had almost 14 inches of her thick, beautiful hair cut off to send to Wigs4Kids. IMHO, kids like her are much better at determining what's important than someone like Kim Kardashian.
Map, LOL at your toothbrush comment. I like a germ-free toothbrush as much as the next gal but I'm not sure the dishwasher is the right choice for my electric toothbrush! BTW, I saw a recipe for strawberry banana paleo ice cream that you might want to try. Interested?
Vamp, so sorry about your stepdad. I'm sure he understood that you were staying away out of love & concern for his health. Cancer just sucks, doesn't it?
I'm now on my third week of paleo & feeling great. (I even threw in an extra workout this week.) I may not be flawless but life is good!
-
Warrior the Paleo Unicorn - don't think I didn't notice your new signature and emotes...nicely done girlfriend *high 5s* Well thank god you're with me this week. It was getting lonely lol! Not surprised at your experience in the PS's office...I watched a vid of a girl about 23...makeup tutorial thing...she started out with 'just got back from Botox".....Botox!?!? On a 23 yr old?!?! What the heck is that going to do to her face by 40?? Crazy. I can't help but blame the 'flawless' push and how it's read by women, especially the young & impressionable. Sad.
Map - I've never been called for jury duty...is it interesting or boring as blazes? You HAVE to check out this link about exercise induced asthma...is it possible you might be experiencing this?: https://acaai.org/asthma/exercise-induced-asthma-eib Everything I've read says you should continue exercise, just scaled to your comfort...don't push it! We want ya around! Any idea where I can get that left elbow cream? LOL too true and too funny! Agree, men don't care and most I know aren't particularly fond of a lot of makeup. Note to self...never borrow Maps toothbrush
))
Inna (godda davida) - Good point! Taking good care of the skin is the best way to look good. Piling on makeup strangles the skin and eventually can create a mess. Sorry it's so hot where you and Map are, makes life tough. At least you two don't have to shovel it
))
JKL - your granddaughter is the epitome of what women should be striving for...a full life, goals & a compassionate heart...she is awesome! How impressive is her contribution...does my heart good to read what she did! The day must have been a joy. As for the ice cream, please post when you can, I was thinking the same for foodie Friday..together we’ll save Map from her her addiction lol!! Either that or we’ll have her carted off to paleo recovery! Look at you go all paleo...congrats on week 3! Can’t agree, that IS flawless...you rock!!
Vamp - Big hugs...I'm so sorry about your step dad. It has to be so rough on you and the kids. When my dad was dying (mesothelioma, asbestos) my nephew was 6...kept asking 'why is grandad so skinny?' So hard when kids are involved. We're here for you, vent it out any time, and if you need a shoulder to lean on reach out...anything we can do to help. More big hugs!!
Well my flawless peeps, time to drag myself off to my cave for the night and apply a mud mask...scraped off the floor
)
Oh don’t forget, tomorrow is workout Wednesday. Yeah, I know, BOO Egads!! Egads sucks!!
;
-
JKL and Egads - thank you for the kind words. I am going to see him this afternoon. I was so scared of a call through the night. I keep thinking of the good times we had when I lived at home.
I am doing pretty good with this LCHF way of life... a few slip ups but it's a learning process. I have realized something....yesterday thought I would try eating out with DH and DS's for lunch, figured I could find something on the menu. No their menu was very limited. So I went with the bbq bacon cheese chicken sandwich minus the bun and sweet potato fires.... well he forgot the bacon, the chicken was dry and tasteless and I honestly felt crappy for hours. So my realization is that it's much better to eat at home because it's cheaper and tastes way better!
All heck, just got the text that they think today will be his last day. God I hate Cancer!!!!
-
oh Vamp, I’m so sorry!! Keep us posted...you’ll be in my thoughts all day....big hugs!
-
This week is dedicated to our cave sister Vamp, going thru tough times, our workouts are for you darlin'
Ready for it? Oh yes, here it comes....
WORKOUT WEDNESDAY!!!
Bored at the gym or with your routine? Don't want to go to the gym? Need something new.....
This week the workout ideas have been blatantly ripped off the Nerd Fitness website (which I love). Here is a list of exercises you can do without (for the most part) realizing you're exercising…..and that is so many kinds of cool! Some are common, and some are not...check it out:
- Hiking - especially with friends – You don't have to climb Everest, just get out there and be 'one' with nature. Get your zen on!
- Walking – Even a 15-minute brisk walk is close to a mile walked, Do you have a 30-minute meeting at work? Have a walking meeting instead. Steve Jobs was known for doing this.
- Larping - (Live Action Role Playing) - Silly to some, great for others, uses imagination which is also stress reducer. Depending on the game, you could be wearing a heavy costume, swinging heavy weaponry, and running for your life! Get Shatner's autograph for me if you do this!! J)))
- Rock Climbing – all climbing routes are graded so you can level up the challenge as you get stronger/fitter/better.
- Geocaching – Become a real life Laura Croft……this is one I'd love to try, so much fun you don't notice the hiking part!
- Dance – Like no one is watching. Crank the tunes when doing chores and strut what your momma gave you over to that dusty table!
- Roughhousing with your kids or grandkids – Fun cardio and strength that's a memory maker, for them and you.
- Climbing on stuff – Explore the woods like it was no problem: climbing on stumps, balancing on fallen trees. Feel your inner cavewoman.
- Martial arts – Ahhhhh little grasshopper (gonna make a muffin outta' you!)
- Build/buy a standing desk – There is a strong correlation between sitting all day and an early grave. Get one for your home office. Many employers are considering these puppies, increases staff production for them and strengthens legs and fixes posture for you. Win-win.
- Stop meeting for coffee.....and sitting. - Get the coffee to go and stroll a while with your BFF…or maybe your frenemies too.
- You know… – That thing that couples do? Yeah. Do more of that. Self-explanatory. Moving on…
- Clean/Garden....Car, home, garage - Not just for cardio anymore, the body weight movements provide a mini strength training session if you hit it hard.
- Do handstands – Builds up serious arm and core strength and will leave you sweating bullets after even a few minutes…..beginners should have a soft landing and a spotter. I tried this last summer…..more fun that I thought, looked like an idiot to the neighbors lol who cares.
- Parkour – For the seriously extreme go getters, looks awesome…and scary. Video below.
- Playout – Parkour lite….and very doable on a number of levels. I'm thinking of trying this for fun. Video below.
- Adult gymnastics – Join a class, jump that pummel horse!
- Yoga – Flexibility, core strength and relaxing…..excellent stuff.
- Play video games - Wii Tennis, Wii Fit, Just Dance on Xbox Kinects OK, DDR (Dance Dance Revolution). Only like the regular games? Make a rule that you can only play standing up….prevents couch potatoism.
- Play on a playground – Take the kids, hang on the monkey bars, use them for incline pushups, swings and pump the legs hard….fly high! At least stand. Just don't sit on the bench and watch.
- Play a musical instrument – Did you know playing the violin for an hour burns about as many calories as walking around a track at a moderate pace for an hour? It turns out, our brains can burn boatloads of calories too.
- Join a Rec league – Want to be active and meet people? Join a kickball or softball league.
- Bike to work – Safety first, wear a helmet!
- Play a childhood game – Capture the flag? Kick the can? Simple tag? Hide and seek? (indoors, you might creep out your neighbors otherwise) Get a few friends together and give it a try – it will be the most fun you've had in a while!
Parkour video.....crazy stuff!
Playout video.....thinking of trying this...looks fun:
-
So sorry, Vamp
-
Vamp I am very sorry to hear about your stepdad.These are hard days. I will be thinking of you. 💐
-
Thinking of you vamp ❤️🙏🏻
-
Great post Egads! All those are great ideas! You can even combine a few of them....😉
-
Warrior Paleo Unicorn, thank you, and good point! There are some great combos in there.
I just wouldn't recommend rock wall climbing with coffee, or playing a musical instrument while climbing on things.....think of meeting the kids/grandkids for coffee - little blighters are energetic enough
))))
Actually this could be fun to combine the exercises....first prize of a paleo princess crown and cricket sceptre goes to the most ridiculous combo!! Starting now...……...go!
